Dive into Out There Chronicles – Ep. 1

Out There Chronicles is an interactive graphic novel based on the science fiction universe of Out There, the acclaimed, multi-award-winning space exploration game.

After a slumber of a million years, you wake up on America, a planet colonized by humans who fled planet Earth. In your quest to find your people, you’ll set off on a galactic adventure where you’ll meet a host of colorful characters and visit unimaginable locations.

Out There Chronicles is a unique adventure set several million years before Out There. Where do the Arks come from? What are the Cubes? Fans of the original game will find answers to some questions, but others will remain a mystery.
You’ll also meet various alien races and get the opportunity to learn more about their people… If you can master their language, of course.

In this universe that is so far from your own in distance and in time, a sharp mind and an instinct for survival are your only weapons. Friendships can be forged and ancient rivalries re-emerge through your encounters with almost-human and less-human races. Will you be able to distinguish friend from foe?
As in the original game, a single human is unable to face the forces of the universe alone. Achieve your goals by exercising diplomacy when needed, and seizing opportunities when they present themselves.

Written by FibreTigre, author of the original game, Out There Chronicles offers an epic story that will delight science fiction fans in search of new experiences.
Brilliantly illustrated by top French SF artist, Benjamin Carré, and equipped with a simple interface, Out There Chronicles will take you on a journey of adventure, even if you’ve never played a video game before.

Find out what gamers are saying about Out There Chronicles – Ep. 1:

Enjoy this because things that take you away this much are rare and hard to find. For readers of science fiction who love space operas, this is an unbelievably rich, grippingly-paced, can’t-put-down story / RPG. The music and atmosphere are explosively enveloping – use headphones. We’ve enjoyed this more than any movie, sci-fi novel, game, or TV show we’ve come across in the last year. Can’t wait til episode 3.

Firmly in the realm of science fantasy, not science fiction, but beautifully made and executed. Requires some not perfectly logical leaps of reasoning, but then again this is standard fare for adventures since 1001 Arabian Nights. The closest movie we could compare it to is Legend, with a firmer plot. $3.99 for the bundle seems insanely cheap compared to a graphic novel, and this was far more engaging. Highly recommended.

We’ve been waiting for the story to continue. We didnt know there was a second episode released.. Finally.

This is not really a game or a choose your adventure, its a graphic novel where you can make mistakes and have to start over from a checkpoint. We had hoped it was a blend of that and Out There, but its not. Its very linear, and there arent really any twists, just false choices. Make the wrong choice? You die, go back to checkpoint. Thats not decisions that matter that just black and white decisions. That said, art and music are 5 stars. The story is pretty cool and paints a gorgeously creative picture of experiencing an alien universe, but again the linearity combined with the shortness does make the experience a bit underwhelming. But perhaps thats just because its so creative and awesome, that we want more. We wish we could bring the universe it creates to any of a number of sci-fi games with real gameplay but lackluster story and characters. Im off to play the 5-star Out There by this same studio, buy that, its worth every penny!

If what you want is a graphic novel in which you blindly choose alternatives until you stumble on the right path, its ok. If you expect anything else, you will be disappointed. The art is outstanding, though.

How much enjoyment you get out of this will probably depend a lot on your own personal background as the first chapter uses nationalistic and religious narratives to propel the story. So if you get hung up on those things you may be left feeling offended. Those things aside theres some stuff to like and stuff thats not so great. On the upside the developer put together an art and sound package that fits the game well. The story is passable and of sufficient length that we doubt youll finish it in a couple of hours like some Tell Tale games. And whether you consider their story elements original or not it does at least feel like they have their worlds and races somewhat thought out. No Klingons or Wookiees (so far ). On the down side Id say the English is good but not always fluid. We dont know if this was poor typing or someone just not knowing exactly the right phraseology. Technically the game seems too stick you with a predetermined number of choices that fit on the screen and if you then dont choose a certain option early you can find yourself stuck until you clear away some dross. In other words we dont think they necessarily use a dialogue tree and in the instances where time is critical it can make a difference. Is it worth a couple bucks, yeah, if you like the old school story based games. Will we buy the next chapter, eh, maybe if we get a desire to delve back into their universe and see what creatures and worlds theyre creating, otherwise Im not a fan of the protagonist that Im stuck with playing.

We are not far but so far this story is a collection of TV tropes so deep its hard to keep from laughing. A religious society is actually evil and hiding secrets. A person discovers a foreign culture and starts developing a 21st century critique of it in moments. And on and on. If it ever gets more original we will update our review. Technically the app is fine.

We didnt play the entire game. So, thats a strike against us for possibly coming to an erroneous conclusion. (God help us, now all we hear in our head is Trump saying, There is no collusion) Anyway, there are a number of references to Christian religiosity, however we got confused when there were several references to a, Catholic Cross Im a catholic of (at this point the writer closes his eyes and softly clears his throat) 3 score years and we never knew that a Catholic Cross was any different than that used by that used by our Protestant brethren. So we thought that was a little weird. An importantish military protagonist in the story is portrayed wearing a Roman collar. We think we know which way the wind is going to blow for the rest of the game, in reference to a not so subtle anti-Catholic drift, so we stopped playing. Thats it, an incomplete assessment at best.

You cant tell this from the description, but as the story progresses, you learn that the society is very "religious," and claim to be believers in Jesus the Savior. But this turns into an evil thing and they are not as innocent as they appear. Basically, it has the same anti Christian feel as The Handmaiden’s Tale. So if youre into that, get the app. If youre a Christian, it may bother you. Personally, we deleted it after about the fifth scene.

Don’t waste your time. On iOS this game is unfinishable. At the end of chapter one it is impossible to get the tool from the maintenance guy quickly enough. You can get it and capture Nyx but you will always did to the AI. Other versions have a different order of questions available to the mechanic but the iOS version is messed up.

Played it several times through. We love the music throughout the game and just keep playing it over and over lol.

WHEN IS THE NEXT CHAPTER COMING?!!? WORK FASTER CONTENT SLAVES!!!!

(My original review was 5 stars, but that was a long time ago…) we loved Episode 1 (though its super linear, dont kid yourself), loved Out There: Omega Edition (still play it from time to time), overall we love everything Mi-Clos Studios produce; our gripe is how long loyal fans have waited. Let us ask you… Would you watch a show that released their pilot episode and then took over two years to announce the episode 2 is ON THE WAY? No, you wouldnt, youd roll your eyes and stop caring. What about a comic series? Release the one and then go dark for over two years? Not happening. Episode 1 is good, but the ending is linear, and given the way its structured, it implies your choices have meaning, and maybe that will be apparent in Ep. 2, but we doubt it, since the cliff-hanger ending to Ep. 1 was a complete bottle-neck. Again, cliff-hanger ending, and over two years+ to even announce theyre looking for beta testers? Not cool. And then theyre wanting to release Ep. 2 as a separate purchase? This Ep. 2 better be huge… Dont buy Ep. 1 until we know for sure they have a set release date. P.S. We love the Out There universe, its honestly one of the best sci-fi universes, the lore is top notch, but going dark this long is over the top. Ep. 2 better be mind blowing. P.P.S. Their other game that weve been waiting for SigmaTheory was first announced in early 2015… That title has also gone dark. We translated an article that said we might… Again… We might see Sigma Theory in 2018. You see trend? We do… This game studio has amazing ideas, just horrible execution.

We can’t wait for the next episode. Thank you.

The anti-American, progressive bias had us chuckling the whole play through. A work of art, and well worth the money.

We wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy this after playing Out There, but we were mistaken. The universe and storyline are impeccably crafted and very imaginative. This could easily be worthy of box office movie or award winning TV series like Syfy’s The Expanse. Looking forward to the next installment.

Amazing story and creative elements keep us hooked! Make a ton of episodes, this is a must play! The visual aids are cool to! It adds with your imagination and also adds alot of element to the game.

This is the best interactive novel to ever exist. What the hell are you waiting for, get it.

We loved it. It gave a few more explanations to things we didn’t know before. ———Spoilers Warning!——————– we loved how we finally know how the giant ships came to be. But then again… Why did we find one in Omega that was destroyed? And we were happy to learn about the crystal ship. Hopefully more gaps will be filled in future episodes. Can’t wait for more. We couldn’t ask for more from this game. Our only wish it that we get to know when the next comes out. Its really killing us!

Can’t wait to see what weird creatures we get to know in the next one – and who they worship.

Love it only played it once so we’ll update after the second play through.

Itwas fun but ended before anything happend. We learned little to nothing about the orginal game’s lore and ad more fun playing the older one as well. When you come out with new episodes make them much cheaper, this wasnt worth what we paid.

We had heard of Out There omega and just impulsively bought the bundle in th App Store, but after giving this game a solid shot, we should have stuck to just Out There Omega. This interactive short story was not for us. We could not maintain a suspension of disbelief. We really liked Out There Omega and played it for hours and will probably play it more, but we doubt we’ll work our way through Chronicles again. We hope the studio works on titles like Omega as opposed to Chronicles in the future.

Don’t waste your money. There is only one episode and you’ll finish it in 3 days.

Good story, great artwork. Looking forward to the next episode!

Please add Russian Language! Please Please Please.

Shocked about some complaints that this game is "short." No way! We enjoyed unravelling this saga and its deep storyline for days. Easily worth $3. What we think we appreciates most is that the plot and characters are not generic by any means. Some risky and even unpopular plot devices are used that are very intriguing. Would love to see a follow up app with another story.

We don’t normally write reviews, but want to write in hopes we’ll get more games like this from Mi-Clos, the developers. From the beginning of the game, the interactive novel hooks the player in a slowly-unveiling mystery. The art is fantastic and writing really sets the stage. Recommend for sci-fi fans and story lovers.

The visuals and slow motion pictures definitely scaled up the game. Please make a part two and don’t comatose production! You won’t have enough oxygen left over ¡ ) Price was a bit spendy too FYI- a dollar under would be nice, as we’ll be paying consecutively for the next few episodes.

This game was great but it ends in a cliffhanger and needs a part 2 when will this happen?

We need help we’re at the battle with zero we need help we can’t beat him.

It’s one of the best text adventures we ever played we can’t wait for the other episode we highly recommend this to any one that like these type of games.

First, let us say that fans of Out There should get this. Let us add that even if you’ve never played Out There, perhaps don’t even want to, this is still an amazing novella-game. Graphics and music are brilliant. Plot draws you in right away. In short, a very immersive experience. Again, you don’t need to have played Out There to enjoy a great story presented perfectly. Very well done.

We found this game incredibly provocative. We understand the complaints about not having been branching storylines, but we don’t mind. It’s a pretty deep journey and ride without it. We think branching storylines would compromise that depth. Having played the original game extensively, we love how this interactive work of fiction weaves in the characters that we’ve seen before. We’re really excited for the next episode. We can’t wait to see where Darius goes next.

Just finished playing the first episode, it is amazing already wanting more!

Love this game, at first we thought this was going to be similar to Omega, so started out a tad disappointed. But the more involved we became the more we began to love it. Nice job!

For $3, was definitely a bit short. Also didn’t like the feeling (haven’t confirmed by trying every single option yet, but we’re pretty sure this is true) that there’s only one plotline/way to make it through each stage, not different directions the story can go. Really enjoyed Out There so we’ll buy the next one to keep exploring, but we’re hoping that they improve on this start.

There was a compelling story, which we appreciated greatly, beautiful visuals and a great soundtrack-the "gameplay" itself felt like a puzzle, which was a nice change of pace for us. We care about the characters, and we make every choice carefully. In all these respects, and more, it was a great game. But… It felt sooo short. To the point of where we felt ripped off. It doesn’t feel massive and expansive like Out There, and we beat the game within a few hours, unlike Out There. From what we can tell, the story seems very linear, without much room for real choice. It’s more like you’re exploring the options rather than discovering new ones, if that makes sense. TL;DR-great story, beautiful game, but too short and maybe even overpriced.

We love interactive fiction, and we found this story especially gripping. They do a great job of intertwining emotion and humanity into a story about space. We can’t wait for the next episode!

We enjoyed playing it a lot but we beat it in like two hours we can’t wait to see where the story goes from there but since it’s so short we feel a dollar should be taken off the price.

Great game interesting concept can’t get past dying in the apartment. Going to order the book.

We loved out there and this seems like a game with a good story, but with constant crashes it’s basically unplayable. Please fix.

We’re a big fan of Out There so was really looking forward to playing this but the game is horribly buggy. That’s pretty unacceptable for what’s basically a text adventure/interactive novel. While we didn’t get crashes like another reviewer, many of the dialog choices create an endless loop where you keep asking the same question and won’t let you progress without quitting and trying again with a different dialog option. Thought it was a fluke at first but it happens with at least one option in every dialog tree within the first 15 minutes of the game. There’s no point in playing if big dialog choices are unavailable because of a bug. We’ll give it 2 stars though because we believe mi-clos will fix this soon and we’re compelled by the story to keep playing. Just wish we could actually read all of the dialog.

The graphics are lovely and the premise was promising, but it’s so glitchy! Choose the "wrong" action/dialogue and it just flickers on screen until you’re forced to close the application entirely and try again. We’re so disappointed.

We have an iPhone 6S. Whenever we tried the speech dialogue "the war is over?" The app would crash" we’re now talking with the president and it crashed again, this time however when we click continue game it just crashes, we open it again, crashes. We absolutely loved out there and so far we’re loving this game as well!! Please fix this issue so we can enjoy this awesome story. Update # 1: we started a new game but when selecting the same game crashing options as before the app does not crash but will instead shrink the writing of the question and then repeat it in long script, it’s completely not playable. Which again is disappointing because it’s really got us interested. Hopefully the next update will solve the issues…

Good franchise, but lousy attempt at a game.

The update didn’t fix the unavailable options at all it just makes it appear over and over such as asking if the war is over.

Even with the new update if you make a certain choice the game still crashes we want our money back!
