A Glimpse into Pangram

Pangram is a simple game – just make words!

See how many words you can make with the letters on the screen. Each word must include the center letter(s). Use letters as many times as you want in each word. Can you guess the pangram? Pangrams are words that use all the letters on the board. Each game has at least one, and many have more. Bonus points for finding them!

Configure games how you like them:

  • Set the number of center (required) letters
  • Set the number of outer (optional) letters
  • Set the minimum word length

That’s it! No lives to lose. No penalty for guessing wrong. No stress. Just play!

For some extra fun, send games to friends and family, publish them on the public games listing, or join other public games that fellow Pangrammers have posted. Each shared or public game has a leader board where you can track everyone’s progress.

In the free version you can create and play one game a day. If you’re having a blast, upgrade to the Unlimited Games in-app purchase. Create game after game after game…

Requirement: You must have iCloud Drive enabled to share games and play public games. The basic free tier is all that’s needed.

Final note: My kids want you to know that Pangram looks even better in Dark Mode. Embrace the dark side, they say.

What’s New in the Latest Update?

Find out what’s new in the latest version of Pangram updated on 16th November 2023:

Hold on to your dictionaries because big improvements are afoot! Now you can create games using not one but two different Merriam-Webster word lists!

  • Merriam-Webster Advanced Learner – for fans of a more abbreviated word list like that found in The NY Times’s Spelling Bee there’s now the Merriam-Webster Advanced Learner dictionary’s word list. If you like games free from rare and obscure words, or if you like trying to get to Queen Bee every day, this option is for you!
  • Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary – for fans who enjoy more rare and obscure words, but don’t want to memorize the minutia of the Scrabble dictionary. The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary’s word list offers better game play for those with extensive vocabularies. Plus every word will link to a definition!
  • Pangram Original – for fans of the original Pangram word list you’ve been using for years. Fear not! This option isn’t going anywhere. If you love every nook and cranny of the English language as defined by the Scrabble overseers, keep on using this word list!

Love the game but suddenly we don’t show up in the leaderboard?

Its fun and we paid the fee for unlimited games. Ill keep playing. But we like hints and there are none.

We just cant say enough about the game. Highly customizable gameplay means it never gets boring. You can adjust all facets of the play, required letter, optional letter, word length, even avoiding common suffixes to stay away from endless -ES versions of words. The UI is also infinitely customizable to fit your mood, your eyes and finger preferences! We made a minor suggestion to the dev and he was super engaging and interested. Whether he incorporates is up to him but he responded and didnt ignore us. Lastly and definitely not least, there are no super invasive ads or click bait!!! We love this and have tipped on the side because we would rather give our money directly to the developer than endorse the practice of more and more ad space.

Totally love playing this game even upgraded so we could playmore than one a day. Recently, we have noticed that letters are being reused in different games. The only thing that changes is the middle letter. The seven letters are all still the same. They are just using a different letter for the middle. VANELOF. – these letters were used in two different games, one game had N in the middle, the other had O. And to make matters worse the two games were only six games apart.

After we updated to the latest version, the game is unbearably slow. Letters take at least a full second to appear after we’ve tapped them. Its unplayable.

Our favorite game to play on our phone, we pull it up every day. Also, Russ is the man! Its so cool to be able to communicate with the developer of a game you enjoy so much. Thanks!!!

We love word games and this is one of our favorites, and the app is really well done. Our only gripe about the app is that the difficulty between different games changes drastically. Some games can be completed in minutes because the letter combinations lead to many common words. But some games are so difficult because most of the words are incredibly uncommon that it is impossible to get past 5 levels without having to randomly guess the rest of the words. This is just a small gripe though. Still love the game.

Listing the user identified words in a single line thats not in alphabetical order makes it difficult to check if youve already found that word. Its not unusual to have well over a hundred words found over a period of several hours – too many to easily remember. Listing the words alphabetically, in columns (similar to NY Times Spelling Bee) would be a very nice improvement.

Good game but occasionally we find words that it doesnt acceptlike ukulele.

We love the game but every time we play we find that these two things happen: 1. Legitimate words that we enter are rejected and later appear in the answers. 2. Words we enter are accepted but then somehow drop off and are not counted in our score The third frustrasting thing we have found is the inclusion of fake words in the answers. Also some foreign words are accepted as answers and not others. All of this really needs to be corrected.

Every time we check the answers to what we missed and we see a bunch that this game cannot even explain. Why are these words even there then? If they are not in a dictionary and have no explanation, then they are not real words.

Downloaded and played one game. Then tried to play a second game only to find out we must upgrade from the free version in order to play more than one game in a 24 hour period! Sorry, but we dont upgrade. We are absolutely fine with ads. Apparently there is no option for ads. So we deleted it. Dont bother downloading this if you arent ready to pay to play. Absolutely ridiculous!

Could even figure out how to play because it only allow one free game per 24 hours. Before we realized this we had created a game but deleted it wanting to start over.

This is like NYTs spelling bee on crack. It is worth buying the full version 10x over. The customization options are awesome, there are no ads, and any skill level can have fun playing. Favorite word puzzle game ever.

A great game to while away some time. Super fun!

Have been doing NYT version love that we can compete now.

Love that it makes you think! The only thing that would make it better would be to have the found words in alpha order so you can more easily search on them.

Please add an option to turn off shuffle letters when the phone shakes! Its very sensitive and annoying when Im playing in transit or if we toss our phone down.

The star words (that use all letters) are always so obscure and uncommon. Still fun to play, but this is a missed opportunity. This game would be 5 stars with a better word list.

After the Apple Watch update a few days ago, all we get is a white screen… We’re a huge fan of this game, so we’re incredibly disappointed. Please help!

Was hoping for much more from this game. Shouldve listened to the other reviews. Also forces you pay to play.

Love this game. Addictive but activates our lazy brain more than we care to admit. Like we said, addictive, but in a good way!

This program (or at least the free version) limits you to one game in a 24 hour period. This means that we cant play quite one game per day. For, example, if we start a game at 8 AM on Monday, and start a game at Noon on Tuesday, we are not allowed to start a game at 8 AM on Wednesday again. We would like to be able to play one game a day, regardless of what time we start.

We love the game. Its everything the NYT version is not. But the times that players post are totally bogus. Hundreds of points in just a few minutes? We dont think so! Im torn between hating the cheaters and wanting to learn how to cheat myself so we can post our own impossible scores.

How is anyone supposed to get the word precieux? Get real.

A sudden proliferation of internal errors such as not updating participants progress.

We love Pangram, but we have to agree with the other reviewers about the word list. Please fix it! We will update our review to a higher rating if it is revamped. We have no idea which dictionaries the dev is referring to; the criteria for valid words seems totally arbitrary. Some contractions are accepted, while some arent. Some places and proper nouns are included while others are left out. We can understand including foreign words in the common parlance such as tsunami or rendezvous, but why so many non-English words in an English word game? Why so many obsolete and obscure spelling variations? This cherry-picking makes an otherwise wonderful game frustrating and confusing.

We love the theory of the game. The most frustrating part of this game is the Pangrams are the most obsolete words you could imagine. If you are a scientist or mathematician the words might be obvious to you, but to the average person, they are ridiculous. Good luck.

Uh half of these words dont have any definitions that pop upor we really have to do some searching. Are these real common words??

We play NYT Spelling Bee and was looking for a similar game. This appears to be just as good as NYT except we cant figure out what the end point is. Is there a list somewhere we are not seeing? We just keep making words with evidently no end in sightno final goal. ???

The dictionary needs work. So many nonsense words and ridiculous pangram words. Today our pangram was Zabajone which is a defunct and archaic spelling of an Italian dessert. Even the internet redirects the word to zabaglione. So obscure and ridiculous. We do the NYT version daily and this just seems silly with the number of included words that most people have never seen before. Even words they have listed in the answer list have no definition!

You need to add the word chyron to your list of acceptable words.

We originally purchased & downloaded the premium version of this app on our iPad. When attempting to then install it on our iPhone, it required that we purchase the premium version again. Something doesnt spell mother here. The double-dipping needs to stop.

We are so bad with words and this helps us out with spelling and learning new words. We like the challenge. We havent bought the full game so we only do the 24 hour challenges. We think Im getting better at themI hope lol. The only issue we have with this game is the definitions. We LOVE that you can click on the word and read the definition. However, there are so many words that do not have a definition at all. If there isnt a definition to the word, is it a real word? Even if it is a word, why add it to the game without the definition? Also, there are some informal or slang words that are used but some that are not. There are compound words that are used and some that are not. It is not consistent is what Im trying to get at. Thats a lot of heckin words though and adding the definitions for them as well. We get it. Our only constructive criticism is to either add more slang or compound words or get rid of them all to make it easier, as well as having the definitions. Since we have to wait 24 hours to start a new game because Im on the free version, we literally look forward to the next day lol.

We just installed Pangram today, went thru the settings, and started a new game on our iPhone 8, IOS 15.4.1. The problem appeared immediately in that the game screen wont all fit on our phone screen. There is a grey grid around the letters with no purpose and we cant choose the bottom letter at all because it jumps to the status page. We cant see or use the backspace if it exists. Several others have reported similar issues going as far back as December. Maybe IOS 15 has something to do with it??? Anyway, we wish it could be fixed because we know we would like the game. UPDATE: The changes included in this latest update 2.0 fixed all of the problems we were having before. There are a couple of enhancements we would like to see, so we changed our rating from 1 star to 4 stars, which is still pretty darn good. We thoroughly enjoy playing the game now, especially no time limit.

What is going on with the update? The game letters have shrunk making it more difficult to see and type Why? All the dead space around the letters is not needed The font on the our games page is now oversized and doesnt fit on one line What the heck?

Be sure you have time available before you start!

One of our absolute favorite games! Things we love: – all of the customizable features to create the game you want: changing the number or required/optional letters, option to remove common suffixes – public games and leaderboards – ability to change colors of all the letters – timed and non-timed games Improvements Id like to see: – clear all button: either a button that clears the whole word youve tried or if you double tap on the delete button the whole word clears or something – option to have the app automatically clear old games (like it asks if it can delete games from 2 days ago on) – we wish the dictionary would include country names, language names, and ubiquitous names like Lincoln or Washington, for example – setting to limit the number of forms of a words you can use (like making it so you cant do right/rights/righter/righted if you want.

At some point over the past year and a half, the buttons on our game became shaded and somehow connected, making gameplay frustrating. We finally had the bright idea to write the developer. He wrote back within 24 hours and told us to turn the button shape toggle off (Settings-Accessibility-Display) in our phone settings. VOILA!! Problem solved in two seconds and Im back to playing incessantly. Kudos to Russ, the designer, who responded to us and less than 24 hours. Who does that anymore? We’ve always been a fan, but now we are a devoted one. Thank you, Russ! For the game and for your quick support.

There must be a better dictionary than the one youre using. Some of the words are arcane and obscure. We cant play any more. Going to uninstall.

Recently the game had some sort of update where the touchpads on the screen are highlighted and the game info button has been placed in the middle of the bottom letter, making it unplayable. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling but no luck. Sad.

1 game every 24 hrs even if you delete a game. Just downloaded and cant even play until tomorrow because we created and deleted a game without even knowing. Havent even made 1 move and cant play. TRAAAAAAASH.

Too many non-words, foreign words, and non-existent variations on spellings for this game to have any value. Bummer too because otherwise its pretty good and we liked the variety of game boards. Meaningless words though, king of remove the point of a game to guess all the (supposedly actual, real) words (in its language of play).

Too many words that arent actual words. Poor layout. User should be able to see their words in alphabetical order rather than a row across the top. What a mess.

We love simple little word games and this one scratches that itch for sure. It feels polished and like a lot of love went into its minimalist, yet very satisfying design. Great work!! :)

We experienced a problem with the app right after an update; we were positively surprised by how the developer went out of his way to help solve the problem. Good app, but kudos for the developer.

We love this game and play it regularly. We want to keep playing it. We am, however, currently frustrated by the recent app updates. We no longer can post games to the public forum. We also cannot save a screen name or appear on leaderboards. When we try to save a screen name in settings, we get an error message that says: Account temporarily unavailable due to bad or missing Auth token. But its not temporary Its been weeks now. We’ve update the app, we’ve updated our phone, we’ve even deleted and reinstalled the app but we still get the same error. And there is no help section in settings that deals with this glitch. We were hoping it would sort itself out in the next update, but even the recent one didnt change anything. Please make this app simple and glitch free again! Also, after the most recent update, the playing board is slightly higher on the screen and the circles touch the words that you spell across the top – even in just a 5 letter puzzle. This is poor graphic design and annoying to look at. Please fix the spacing on the board!

Good game, easy interface. Much like the NYT Spelling Bee. However, Pangram is using some kind of wild word list. Lots of nonstandard spellings and obscure words. You can get to the top rank without guessing a lot of words on the listwhich is good, because we are not sure its possible. Also occasionally includes racially offensive terms as valid words. A better dictionary and a more curated word list would elevate this game to 5 stars.

There are thousands of games to play on this app, we absolutely love it.
