We just discovered this game, so Im still getting used to it, but we really like it. We were looking for another deck builder in addition to Dominion and Ascension that wasnt about combat. Like the other two games, this is all about building up the deck to purchase victory points (which in this are novels), but instead of just playing cards, its all about making words. There are lots of options which change the difficulty and bring in elements that add variety, and in addition to online and local play, we love the fact that we can play a game all by ourselves – great practice for learning how the game works. we want to emphasize that Im really happy the vendor made this game work with the Mac – thats what we actually bought it on, though of course that means we also have it for our iPhone and iPad. This is not a common thing for vendors to do, and it should be commended and encouraged. So overall, a great game if you like deckbuilding and scrabble.
Updated from previous review Still a great game! Cards that double adjacent card value: doesnt double card value if previous card in word is selected. We dont normally use these cards anyway but the AI does so its actually a beneficial bug for us. The AI doesnt really use the F and Z cards that reduce novel values to their fullest extent. Which again benefits us. The AI leaves a wild in its hand when it could use it as an s and capture the common vowel.
Updated from previous review This is our go to game for downtime. Bugs, but nothing fatal: Blue Y: will draw 5 if double letter card with vowel is used in word. Green L: doesnt always double card value if previous card is selected. Still some inconsistencies with card descriptions and graphics regarding +1 draw vs +1 value for # of cards remaining in hand. Where did the cards go that added points based on specific letters in your deck, # of trashed cards, etc.
The games vocabulary filter needs some tweaking. While it invalidates a lot of legitimate, non-offensive words, it permits a host of offensive terms related to racial and ethnic groups (e.g., the verb jew, and the nouns yid, honkeys, and orientals).
The balloon fonts have made this game unplayable. Some dont even fit in the card. The option vol 1 font controls this? But cant turn it off. Update; we contacted support about the font and not long after he made a change and the font issue was fixed. Its back to being playable and Ive changed our rating to reflect.
We enjoy playing especially against the game character but after the last update we cant get past the game character playing a word then it freezes. Tried reloading the game and now we cant even play against the game. Sadness.
We play the co-op game solo a lot, but recently it started randomly getting itself into a freeze state where the only way we have found to get out is to quit the app and then start a new game. (There was a different freeze it used to do that you could get out of by quitting and restarting, but that didnt work with the new behavior.) Its super frustrating when you are doing well and then it hangs.
We love the game. One of our favorites. Not sure why the graphics had to change with the latest update. Difficult to read. Looks cartoonish. At least give us the option of using the original fonts, etc.
Release from 2024 (October?) changed the look, which was bad, but also about 60% of the games against the AI now hang and you lose your progress and have to restart. We reported to the company directly but they dont seem to care. The November update did not help. Just avoid this app unless you see a fix.
The new graphics and letter fonts are terrible and dont even fit on the card! It makes it really tough to see. Bring back the old fonts.
Constantly freezes and cant turn on vol 1 cards. Used to work fine till the update.
After really enjoying playing solo, we talked our wife into getting this app so we could play against each other. Rather than the engaging experience from the solo game, where we could watch every move our AI opponents would make, as they made them – multiplayer just pops up a plain text message your opponent is making a move and you wait, bored, until they finish. Thought it was going to be fun, instead it was dull. What a wasted opportunity.
This was a problem with the previous version. AI is allowed to use proper nouns such as Ralph. Also we used pawn and game said it was an invalid word.
Developers fixed most of the bugs! Thank you.
Easy to play and a little bit different than the tabletop game. Very well done.
Great game. BUT since the update: New feature, typos, doesnt show up on mobile and inviting players for games or starting new games with other players causes the app to hang. Please fix.
Review from 5-15-23: score 5/5 The issues have been fixed it seems and no longer is unplayable with a broken frame rate. Seems to run well again. Review from 5-10-23: score 3/5 Game is broken. Animations move at a snails pace. What did you change with the most recent update? Literally unplayable. It used to go 60fps now chugs around 10-15 fps. And this is on an iPhone 13 Pro. Was working perfectly fine before the update. Please fix. Great game otherwise. Would be rated 4-5 if not for the terrible update.
Our game wont deal us a second hand any more. We even jninstalled and reinstalled. Full rules would be nice too e.g. What is a typo.
We like this game, but with each update it brings more glitches The bugs we know: 1) the game runs with like 10-15 fps with the last update (iPad pro) 2) any of the card with the ability of making and adjustment card Wild doesnt work, making it unplayable 3) any of the card with the ability to pick up a card worthy 1c (2c) more doesnt work. If you try to use one of those cards to make a word, the buy button will disappear, making it impossible to finish the move 4) AI makes crazy words (especially The smartest one) Hope you can fix it soon! There are so many things wrong with this app. GUI is awkwardly laid out. Some buttons are way smaller than they should be. Push notifications dont work for online games. Some of the effects on cards like the Make an adjacent card wild dont always work. There have also been a few very legitimate words that the game rejects. Glad we own the physical game and also glad we got the app for free.
Overall, we were stoked to have the implementation of expansion options, butthere are numerous crash bugs making it unplayable70% of the time. Computer players lock up when trying to make a word. This has appeared with more cards on hand, not fewer. Computer players (smarter AI) have not made words, or have made suboptimal choices. The first is more problematic than the second. After watching them make FA or SH, we question them missing THE or SO. Computer players lock up while buying letters. We appreciate being able to skip their turn, but that just gets the game moving. It does not solve underlying issues. Finally, similar to PAPERBACK VOL1., the double score adjacency bonus does not always work. Again, thanks for putting the work in. Some more tweaks will get it where it needs to be. Mike.
The game will freeze on buying phase for AI, or finding word. This takes you out so much it becomes annoying. You think for the amount of money they charge they could get a programmer to fix such a glitch. Otherwise its a great game. Please update and fix this.
The AI still gets tripped up with triple the score of an adjacent card. The app just freezes. Thats a disappointing bug in an otherwise fun and challenging game.
The game is 5 stars in concept. Brilliant! Daily, the program freezes unpredictably on AI opponent finding a word. AI makes ridiculous fame card buying choices in coop mode, regardless of level of AI. If you set three AI to play against each other, an error occurs in every other game. Glitches are too everpresent for such a good game. Ill revisit this rating if new versions fix things.
We have created an account, but it will not run until we do something with a confirmation email message. Except that the message never arrives. Same problem for our friend; the problem is on their end. Further evidence of the publishers lack of programming skill: The message displayed when the app pretends to send the confirmation email is password reset sent (referring to an action button we did NOT press).
