A Glimpse into Perceptron – An Idle Game

Perceptron is a new incremental game which is based around the idea of building and training a neural network. The concepts behind a neural network have been distilled to their essence in this idle simulation.

Not to say the game is simple. Sure, it starts simple with only nodes, training, and data, but soon balloons into a complex idle game with prestige and upgrades. Not to mention offline support.

Take on the role of a young undergraduate student as you become quite the idle tycoon.

Perceptron is not just another idle clicker. It was designed around the idea of training a neural network and has taken inspiration from many neural network topics. Who knows, you might even end up learning something.

We have never seen a game like this before. If you even want to call it that. It feels more like a task. We would hope for everyone that comes across this to play it at-least once in their lifetime.

There are no explanations on what is happening and why its happening.

This is seriously the slowest game we’ve played in 40 years.

Like others have said it gets to a point where you literally have to wait days to progress and its locked up the ability to just set your phone time forward.

So thats 2 stars we guess? We keep coming back to it in case the beginning is just slow. But no. Every time something new unlocks its just more excruciatingly slow linear progress. The worst part about the game is how bad the prestige system feels. In most games, you prestige and then you catch up quickly and then progress. In this game, your prestige multiplier is capped by your current base power so every time you reset you dont get boosted back, you go through the same slog until you are forced to prestige. It just feels really bad. It also feels like a total ripoff of exponential idle. The style is like, identical. Exponential idle at least has some fun decision points and a feeling of actual progress.

We feel like the 3rd data collection task should be a lot shorter than 5.4 hours, especially since it only yields 40 minites worth of data.

Great game, we just hope there is more story added and this game continues to get updated.

Eliminating the ability to use over clock for people who use screen reader without buying the permanent upgrade does not solv the problem of ads being inaccessible, it just forces disabled people on fixed incomes to have to buy the permenant upgrade instead of solving the problem. Not just that but it was not something that blind people werent able to work around in the first place, Ill update our star rating if you revert it. Cause its now discriminatory instead. We dont know how you thought that was a solution honestly. Good game otherwise though.

Pros: Dont have to play super actively to progress Cons: Progression is too slow at nearly all points of the game to feel satisfying. Doesnt offer anything new compared to other idle games.

We are thoroughly impressed with Perceptron! It is pretty much the only game that we really can play with one hand these days. Everything is always fighting and war. We will admit, That is kind of sad. But keep up the great excellent work.

Unique and pretty simple game, but nonetheless entertaining and interesting.

But Im going to write a second just because. This app is more than an app. Its more than an experience. Its experiential. Its you-play-around-with-it-and-think-about-how-it-applies-to-your-dreams-and-goals. Its literally an example of the foundation of how most great ideas start- from tinkering and thinking to compiling and producing. This app is a legend in our book and Im sure in the books of a lot of other people who have a passion to be someone and do something but dont quite know how to get started. Please, if nothing else, just know this- about the app and your well being- the truth will set you free but first youre going to have propagate it.

As many others have mentioned in their reviews, you will hit a wall just mere minutes of starting this game. This is due to its linear nature. Upgrades that you grab are linear and are only additive to your total gain (in data, reps, etc.), but the cost of these upgrades are exponential in nature. This means that as you grab upgrades that will only give, for example, +1 reps, the cost of the upgrade that you just bought can go up by a large margin. As a result, it will take longer and longer to just obtain an upgrade that, in total, will only add up around like 5% more power. An idle game that is based solely on linear progression is the worst idea we’ve seen yet. The game will never speed up; it will only slow down. Also, this game is honestly kind of scummy. (Spoilers for those of you that want to go through the same slog that we did) There is a mechanic you unlock after a retrain that lets you overclock, letting you gain a 2x increase to all attributes in the game. While this contradicts what we said earlier in the fact that this upgrade is multiplicative and not additive, the issue lies in the fact that you need to watch an ad for this increase. Now, Im perfectly fine with idle games allowing you to watch an ad for an increase in profit for a time. Then, whats the problem? You may ask. The problem is that watching an ad for a profit increase is an actual game mechanic in Perceptron. While you are encouraged to watch ads in other idle games, you are intended to watch ads in Perceptron. Having ads be an actual game mechanic is the scummy part about this game. Speeding up the process by cutting the time of waiting for upgrades in half? Watch an ad for it, and give the programmer some ad revenue. The main upgrade for the retrain at this point is the overclocking. It is the only way here to speed up your game, and we believe its ridiculous. TL;DR: we do not recommend playing this idle game. It is a constant wall due to the linear nature of the game and zero exponential aspect to it. The game includes ad watching for profit as an actual game mechanic, which (to me) is very scummy to do. In our opinion, the layout (the story points, for the most part) seems to be inspired by Exponential Idle. However, its like Perceptron is attempting to be that games antithesis. One is exponential, one is linear. One has many intriguing and fun mechanics introduced throughout as you play, one has new upgrades that are introduced that you continue to trudge through, just like the previous upgrades. In any case, play Exponential Idle instead.

Its a fun game for the first few soft resets, but it quickly becomes a click on this and wait and it just doesnt have enough active gameplay to really itch the incremental idle game bug.

It keeps changing nodes but we dont gain anything and Im not able to buy anything, we just started the game about an hour ago and nothing has happened at all.

The way to earn data points in the idle game is off. Instead of earning data every 5 hrs 24 minutes you earn data every 13 hrs. Artificially slowing the progress in the game unless you sit there and click repeatedly. Latest update seemed to break this idle feature.

Like others have said, the idle wall hits after about 30 minutes of playing this game. There isnt enough to do besides wait.

Ads often dont allow you to close them without closing the whole app.

We like the concept but the only problem is that it takes idle to the extreme. Trust us when we say this, we have played over 35 idle games. This one is the one that stands out because of how painfully slow it is.

Im currently on background removal, and even leaving the game idle a week at a time after building up the things a couple times, still cant get to the next part, this game would seriously benefit from being quicker, an idle game wall that lasts weeks is too much.

This takes an extremely long time to get going, and is pretty fun despite being pretty confusing. The big problem is that the game will erase your save state as a punishment for changing the time on your phone. This removes any playability, as it took months to get where we were, and this game is not worth playing for actual months!

Its a interesting game but it would be better with a bit more sound.

The game being slow is kinda nice since we can put it down and not worry about it while we do other things. Question for the dev tho where is the other iOS game you listed in the other games section of the menu? Cmd C?

A pretty good way to learn about neural networks, but a pretty poor idle game. Very linear and far too slow. The neural network stuff is mostly just layered on top of a rudimentary idle format rather than integral to it.

The game when offline we earned negative money, now we have -71311108.48 reputation.

We just downloaded it Id say 5 minutes ago and understand pretty much nothing about whatever the node things are but we absolutely love it and we look forward to playing this till 2 am.

Cant wait for for future content updates.

Sound. Whether its music, sound effects, or both. But absolute silence just isnt our thing. This seems fun. A Computer Science version of Exponential Idle? Im down. But add some music and sound effects.

The ad boosts dont work and there needs to be a better way to generate research points.

Generally, with these types of games, there is a wall that gets hit where someone just has to idle for a long time to make progress. Sadly, in this game, that wall comes within the first hour of playtime. Because of that, it makes it very hard to enjoy the game.

To start with, the game works really well and it’s a really interesting concept to pursue. But there’s just nothing to do. Idle games usually rely on exponential growth, but progression in this game is pretty linear. With upgrades increasing in price exponentially, gains feel much more diminishing the further you go. With how gaining rep/data/money currently works, it takes hours to days to reach any significant milestone, with almost no chance for any sort of player interaction in between. And that’s with the overclocking ability. In its current state, the game is just simply not worth it.

We made it to the level where you get ensemble and could no longer manually gather data. We crashed app, tried ensemble, and then when it reset, we had no network or way to gather data which meant the game was essentially stuck. We used our gamecenter ID and tried to uninstall and reinstall and even with the gamecenter ID, it started us over, so we said enough with the game.

We had an issue which turned out to be a bug, put up a 1-star review and went to bed. Woke up the next morning to find the dev had pushed through a hotfix for the issue we had! Tried it, it worked! The game seems pretty good, but that commitment to their players is inspiring!

Left or running on our phone for six hours got no points nothing zilch. Pretty sure its just a scam game at this point.

After our first ensemble the resource generation has dropped to zero and we have no funds or comp power to buy upgrades with. There is also no interaction when we try to inject training data. Is this a known issue or am we missing a key menu or feature somewhere?

Without a tutorial we’ve been going through the pages of this game trying to do anything but we literally cant. Theres no help option. We dont have any idea whats going on. We’ve literally been on 0 since we opened the game.

Found the data tab. Tried tapping on the 3 second task, nothing happened.

Could not click anything on iPhone 12. Disappointed we downloaded this.

We love everything about this game. The only flaw the game has is when purchasing the Pro version to double all offline income & get the permanent overclockit doesnt work!! It keeps asking us to purchase this feature even though we already have. Regardless of how many times we try, the game isnt recognizing the purchase. Once this glitch is fixed, Ill give the 5 star rating Perceptron deserves!

We dont know if the balance of this game is really bad or if there is some mechanic that we fundamentally dont understand. A lot of idle game have an idle wall (where you need hours or days of income to purchase an upgrade that increases your income by 0.003%). Most of the time we find this after weeks or even months of play. This game gave us an idle wall in the first hour. We currently need to spend 50k units to buy a 0.1 unit/s income boost not sure where to go from here.

The game is pretty linear, the values dont change very much and is very slow to gain any new upgrades which barely boost production. This game is people who dont mind coming back every few hours to upgrade a few things. Also, the menu is very cramped, you cant see much of whats going on. Production value is on the same line of price which usually gets pretty big, and the buy 1 and buy max take up most of the space, they should be put together. We would recommend putting the price and the production value on seperate lines and maybe use scientific notation on everything just to make it less cramped.

We didnt come here for your Black Lives Matter propaganda.

Dont get this one youre just gonna delete it later.

This is a vey deep but slow game. Not for the impatient, but worth it if you like incremental games.

This is a really amazing game. Ads are practically nonexistent, storyline is cool, only downside is that the game is slow. 10/10 would play again.
