A CLASSIC OLD-SCHOOL GAME
R-Type II is a horizontal scrolling shooter arcade game developed and published by Irem in 1989. This classic old-school game is the sequel to R-Type and the story takes place two years after. The player controls a ship called the R-9C which is an improved version of its predecessor, the R-9.
The Bydo Empire is back! Take it down with power-ups, two new types of weapons, the Search Laser and Shotgun Laser, and a new anti-ground unit bomb.

R-Type Final 2 got released and you haven’t given us an update on fixing the controls. They are all over the place completely unplayable.
It’s SO FREAK’N GREAT having both this and the original R-Type available on our phone. These two games were the first shmups that we ever played and the fact hat we’re playing them almost 30 years later is a testament to how incredibly amazing they are. And… Thousands of people are in the same boat as we are – so, if you’re questioning yourself while hovering over the ‘buy’ button, we’ll just say this:;: DotEmu has done a FANTASTIC job porting this over to the touch-screen. There’s plenty of options and the relative touch controls are P E R F E C T. You can also play with a virtual joystick if that’s what you’d like, and they included the option to move all the buttons around and resize them. It also has MFi support – so if a controller is more up your alley, you’re set. You can also change the video settings so that the aspect ratio is 1:1 to the original. You can toggle the graphic filtering on and off and you can also add scan lines if that’s your thing. They’ve also added an unlimited mode so that you can play all the way through to the end with an infinite amount of continues – as well as an Insane mode that you can unlock after beating the game on Normal. All of this to say – THIS PORT IS PERFECT! If you’re an R-Type fan, there’s no reason you shouldn’t get this. If you’re a shmup fan, there’s no reason you shouldn’t smash that BUY button. And if you’re curious about one of the best shoot ’em ups of ALL TIME – you needn’t worry about getting an inferior version – in fact, we choose to play this version rather than the PlayStation version we have sitting under our TV – it’s THAT. Its fun but wish there were checkpoints so you dont have to start over from the beginning.
Game plY is how we remember it. However, the lack of X support has a huge issue. The left 1 if the screen is not used and therefore its easy for your finger to drift into that unrecognized part of the screen which means youve lost control. Please add support.
The controls on iOS 13 are huge, cover the screen, and dont respond properly, making the game unplayable.
Don’t buy, this app is very buggy.
Needs update. Controls take up half screen when playing iPhone XS Max and iOS 13.
Just like playing original on Sega back in the past. Only without a joystick.
An absolutely perfect port of one of the best games of all time.
We can’t believe this is available on our iPhone. We loved playing this when we were in our twenties. Now we’re just living in amnesia land trying to remember how we conquered this back in the day!!! Thank you.

This game is an epic classic arcade game we’re not from the 80’s but we had this game for SuperNES definitely worth the money but please turn on invincible mode!!!! It makes it a bit more fun.
This was our favorite game in our local arcade at college. We played it all the time. Now we can play it on our phone and remember those sweaty evenings, feverishly pounding on the Fire button, thinking how foolish it was that we wasn’t working on our paper that was due in twelve hours.
This is the game Super R-Type that was released on the Super Nintendo way back when we were kids.
What surprises us is that we’ve never heard of this game before. All we knew was Contra growing up this game is awesome.

We don’t have faith in touch controls for old classics but this surprised us. It’s not perfect and it’s not exactly the same but it is enough that we’re having a lot of fun reliving the game on the go! The controls would benefit from a sensitivity setting. Otherwise, graphics are smooth, only minor slowdowns occasionally when lots of stuff is happening. You can set the graphics filter and interlaced modes on or off. Nicely done and well worth the .99c on the holiday special!

Good game but needs sensitivity slider.
We loved R-type growing up. We were never really that good, but it was still always fun. We’re glad you guys made this friendly with the Moga ace controller. It works really well with it. It’s one of the reasons we bought rtype 2 even though we already had the first one from you guys. Our only complaint is that the game doesn’t disable auto lock. After a minute our phone goes to sleep since we haven’t touched the physical screen. We can just disable auto lock manually, but its a bit of a pain to remember.

R-Type is an awesome game series that kick our butt back to back. And we love it! The only problem we have with this game is that they need to add sensitivity controls in options so players can adjust the touch screen controls. We also notice the slowdowns during gameplay, but it’s not much of a problem though because the slowdown can help you get pass through the barrage of bullets on screen. This is an awesome game. If they add that in this port, it would be perfect!
We grew up playing games like the one in question. There for perhaps we’re slightly biased, but we’re having a lot of fun with this app. It’s true that the touch controls aren’t ideal, but they are serviceable. Other wise we really can’t complain.
We wish there were more control options. We usually like using a d-pad but playing with the game’s is no comparison to the touch controls (I doubt the game is even beatable with the d-pad). We would like to be able to increase the sensitivity of both the d-pad and the touch controls (so the ship could move greater than 1:1 with our thumb).
Great game but needs the original joystick controls (feel & response) from the Original R-Type… The joystick on this R-Type 2 is very hard to control and maneuver the R-Type away from or towards which makes the game virtually unplayable…#ifitsnotbrokenyfixit#
Can only be enjoyed with a controller. Not so portable.
We downloaded this onto our iPhone and the touch screen controls make this unplayable. Most of the time our finger is blocking something that is happening and it caused most of our deaths. Game could use an option to have a "slide" on the side that doesn’t contain the actual game so you can use your finger without it covering gameplay. Would have been fun but 100% waste of $3.
Nifty arcade shooter brought to iOS. Controls work great. Only thing is the latest update seemed to make the R-Type ship invincible. Oopsie.
Great port of rtype 2 for iTunes! Also, the awesome intro for level 1 has been added back in, thanks! Now, there IS a bug with the newest update though. We’re invincible and can’t be killed? Please fix that, make it a cheat option to turn off, or remove it completely. There’s no challenge when we can’t be defeated! Keep up the good work though, 5 stars!
Love the game and we used to play it all the time but now for some weird reason our ship cant be killed and we beat the whole game in 20 minutes… Can that be taken off?
Good game. We play all the time. Our pants around our ankles in public. Arrested. Still play.
Since the most recent update, we can not die. Ship is invincible.
Edit: new update made it so you are invincible in every mode. Needs fixing. Thanks DotEmu. Hope you keep bringing more arcade shooters down the line.
This game is a waste of money we beat it in 20 minutes. Only 6 levels and you don’t die… We ant our money back!!!!
We bought the game for Nostalgia. We used to play R-Type on our handheld game consoles. This is not a good representation. We beat the game in 10 minutes. The game was too easy with the invincibility.
