Rogue Touch is a Adventure/Roleplaying game from Kevin Hill, first launched in 19th February 2009.
It’s rated 9+ and currently has 71+ ratings on the App Store.

What Makes Rogue Touch Stand Out

Rogue Touch is based on the classic dungeon crawler Rogue. This famous turn based adventure-RPG has been re-designed from the ground up for easy touch screen gaming, no crazy keyboard commands or dozens of hard to learn gestures here! Rogue Touch is so simple a child can play, but still offers deeply strategic gameplay and literally hundreds of hours of fun and replay value!

Your mission is simple: Explore the Dungeons of Doom while trying to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor… Descend into the depths, find and identify strange and powerful items… Learn how to use your pack full of equipment effectively against increasingly dangerous monsters. Few have made it out alive with the Amulet. Do you have what it takes?

If you liked games such as Torneko / トルネコ / Taloon or Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer (Chunsoft) you have to play Rogue Touch! Rogue is the great-grandfather of these games and spawned an entire genre of "roguelikes" over nearly 40 years.

"Rogue Touch is really a dream-come-true for fans of the genre. It's an impressive adaptation of a true classic." - Blake Patterson, TouchArcade.com

Rogue Touch features:

  • Random dungeon layouts and items: no two games are ever the same!
  • Graphical, animated actions, special monster attacks, traps, and more.
  • Ambient background dungeon sounds, or play your own music while gaming.
  • Auto-mapping feature with map overlay (including locations of doors, stairs, monsters and items)!
  • Streamlined inventory-item-action system for simple touch gameplay. Read scrolls, Drink potions (or throw them at your enemies!) and much more with a clear, simple interface.
  • Movement/Attacking is handled with classic touch control or a virtual D-Pad for single handed gaming on the go.
  • Dedicated on-screen buttons for both "resting" to heal your character, and "searching" to find traps and secret doors.
  • Auto save system records your progress upon exiting the game so you can resume exactly where you left off next time you play.
  • All of the monsters and items as seen in the Rogue ports of the mid 1980s, plus many new items!
  • Secret characters to discover and play as, with powerful special equipment and abilities!
  • Online Leaderboards with many ranking categories and statistics! View your rank at: BestRogues.ChronoSoft.com

Recent Updates & Development

Latest Update: 1st September 2017

Recent improvements include:
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Version 2.0.64:

  • ZOMG an update, after 4 years!
  • WOW its a big update!
  • HEY there's a bunch of new and cool stuff in this update!
  • 64-Bit Compatible, Position Independent Executable (iOS 8.0 is the new minimum requirement). Portions of the game engine have been re-written to support this as well as the other new features below… You don't even want to know the massive number of deprecations I had to fix dating back to the original support for iOS 2 (º_o)
  • Retina Graphics – The dungeon never looked better thanks to a ton of new artwork by Jake Woodruff and a bit of tweaking by yours truly. Everything has been re-imagined in Hi-Res detail.
  • Retina Text – Fixed again what has been broken for several iOS revisions, all text is now silky smooth.
  • Play Your Own Music – Finally, seamless automatic detection means you can explore dungeons without interrupting your jam (or streaming, or podcast, or audiobook!). Rogue Touch also respects your mute switch.
  • Gameplay Improvements – In addition to the classic "Search" for secret doors, you can simply walk into / push on walls where you believe the door is hidden. If you're correct it will be revealed automatically! Secret Doors and Traps may have small but noticeable visual differences now to help clue you in ;)
  • Gameplay Improvements Part II – Interesting tweaks for extra damage and/or elemental immunities when weilding special weapons like ice, fire, electric, and blessed.
  • Dungeon Improvements – Subtle tweaks to dungeon generator for room sizing, treasure placement, and more. Secret doors should nearly always lead somewhere interesting now, rather than a potential dead end.
  • Pinch Zoom Improvements – Now you can enhance your view by zooming anywhere from 25% to 200% size to appreciate the detailed graphics close-up and personal.
  • Settings Improvements – Finally, it's super easy access to RT settings, just touch the gear icon found in the upper left corner on the Title Screen.
  • BUGFIXES – Lots of little annoying bugs fixed to provide a better dungeon exploring experience! Fixes for various crash conditions, stair placement bugs, and game-lockup at item use during the last turn before death are included.

Player Experience Highlights

Community Insight:

We cant believe Ive been playing this game for almost 10 years and never wrote a review! As someone that loved the Atari ST version this is an easy five star review for us. As we said time again, this is the only game we need on our iPhone. Unlimited replayability and fantastic job from the developer.

Great version of Rogue. We grew up playing the Mac version and had been playing it on various 512 Mac simulators in the internet… But they would inevitably crash. This app almost never crashes, and when it does, it just brings you either right back to where you were, or to the beginning of the level. It's similar to the Mac version, except with all the added Feudal Japan era weapons, hero characters, and super weapons. Only thing we miss is the "far seeing" potion from the Mac game. We probably play this game everyday. No adds, like ever, always works, loads quick, can play it silently or listening to music, we really can't say enough good things about it. It's the perfect "we need to kill 7 minutes" game, or you can spend the whole day playing it.

We loved Rogue when it was an ASCII game on a single-color monitor. This update preserves the very best of original Rogue with appropriately cool and simple graphics, more sophistication to items, monsters, environment, and strategy. Best of both worlds! Thank you for creating Rogue Touch! This is exactly the game we wanted for our phone.

We are now 17 years old and we used to play this game when we were 6 years old and have been playing consistently since then. It has remained in our heart forever and we love it.

We mean, its Rogue, our guy. Its on iPhone. Thats all we need.

We spent far too much time playing Rogue in college and graduate school, and was thrilled to find this iPhone version. Although this version replaces the glowing green ASCII-character art with modern graphics, it staunchly maintains the character of the original game. End-of-the-Boom Boomers like us should welcome this blast from the past, as will presumably younger fans of Ready Player One. Well worth the $3, and we hope the developer is encouraged to continue his work.

Ive recently discovered/re-discovered this game. We originally played hack on Unix platforms about 30 years ago, and this is very similar. A couple of years ago we found poor adaptations for iOS , but we find this adaptation to be excellent. We particularly like it when we get a good game going and am lost in it for hours. Well done! A couple of comments for the developers: This version is very dark. We realize this makes it harder, and there are things like light wands, but it detracts from the enjoyment. We have not encountered shops yet: are they in this version? Shops were a lot of fun. There was usually a shop in the first few levels. Searching is clunky, or maybe we just havent figured it out. Similar to darkness, it detracts. Dead end passages detract, too – whats the point? The occasional Scroll of Identify that identifies all items of a certain type, or x number of items, would be nice. There should be a way to control where you teleport to? Maybe there is, and we havent discovered it yet. There should be a way to go up stairs when you fall through a pit. Otherwise you dont have the food, hit points, items, etc. You need to survive at a lower level. Overall, really well done, and thanks.

We have played this game, in one form or another, for years and will continue to play as long as the developer maintains it. We are so grateful to him for the most recent update. We had put it down for a while, because it had become crashy. Now its like returning to an old friend. Cheers Kevin.

Love it and have been playing it for several years. We like the upgrade, but just hit the most annoying bug from the old version – a level without stairs. No choice but to restart.

We first played this game in the early eighties. Its plays better with all of the TLC this version has. The Amulet of Yendor is still on level 26, just like the old days. This is a steal foe $2.99. We do very few reviews, just five stars and one stars. Enjoy the game.

This is NetHack but better. Better controls, better graphics and better overall but doesnt loose the true feel of that game. We played countless hours of NetHack and Im doing the same with RougeTouch. This is the version you want to be playing. Thank you for making this a reality. Well done.

We picked this up a week ago, and love it! Not only have we not won, but we havent even come close. But our defeats have been glorious. If we could add one feature, it would be the ability to go back up a floor. We usually die because we clear a level and am forced lower and lower before Ive had time to really armor ourselves up. Being able to ascend dungeon levels would let us spend some more time getting stronger before heading into more danger.

This is the only real roguelike on the app store. That said, the new update has crazily cranked up the number of aquators you encounter. After as you reach floor 8, it's aquators for days. Multiple aquators on every floor. The end result is that, unless you're lucky enough to find an elfin armor or a protect armor scroll, the only armor worth holding on to is leather, because anything else is guaranteed to be almost instantly destroyed.

Perfect for killing a few minutes or a few thousand hours! This is one of the first iOS games we purchased many years ago and is still the only one that we play regularly. No ads, no in-app purchases, just pure essence of Rogue.

This app is absolutey the only one we use everyday. We used to play the Epyx Rouge on our old Tandy PC and missed it for several years, till our old friend showed us this on his we-pod, so it ws the first app we bought when we got one. The first time we played and read that we hear the sound of many shuffling feet in the distance we knew they had this version right. Update 2017- Thanks so much for the update, we were thinking we would not be able to update our phone this fall because we would lose this game that we play very often still. We were so delighted and surprised by the gorgeous update. Thanks again.

Our biggest gripe is that you have faithfully reproduced the most annoying feature of the original game. Many games just don't have enough food and there is no way of finding any in an emergency. It's really irritating to have a great game going and then starve to death. Would you consider enabling file sharing for this game.

Thank you for the upgrade. This is one of a two games that has stayed on our phone. The upgrade is very nice. Thanks again.

Thank you- the update is stellar! The graphics are crisp, and now we don't have to worrying about the IOS 11 update! The best and only game on our phone.

Thank you for updating to 64-bit! This is one of the first games we downloaded from the AppStore – very happy we'll be able to keep playing after the 32-bit depreciation happens.

Surprised there was new development.

We're one of those old-timers who actually played the original game and its descendents like Ragarnok during the 1980s. This version really brought back memories of those dungeon crawls. This is a very challenging game not for the easily frustrated ;-) but we always put aside one of the other "eye candy" games to go another round with this fantastic adaptation of a classic. The input from the developer is simply the icing on the cake, as they are constantly looking to improve the product and ask for input on the forums. EDIT: Eight years later this game has never left our devices. Thought it would die in the upcoming 64 bit move but so happy to see that it received an update! Can't wait to see the new stuff added. Sometimes the oldies are still the best :).

This is an App Store classic based on a class game. Well worth the look.

Rogue Touch has been a mainstay since we had a 2nd Generation iPod Touch and you don't know how happy we are to see it get a 64-bit update! Thank You Chronosoft! :D.

A really excellent implementation of the classic game Rogue that launched the Rougelike genre. It's basically the original game with a few modern conveniences added, and works great as a mobile game. This update refreshes the graphics and patches a few bugs and adds a few new nice features. This is our most played iPhone game, definitely worth your $$.

Edit 09/217: ZOMG THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE SO MUCH WOW!!! And here we thought you forgot about us. New update is AMAZING. Sooooo much easier on the eyes, it's like playing a whole new game!! Already noticed loot is better especially at deeper levels. Thank you!!! Yay fixed for iOS6!!! Still the best rogue-like on the App Store! Thanks dev you rock!! We've tried all of the roguelike games and this one is the only one we keep coming back to. It is 100% true to the original, and if we could give it 10 stars we would. If you liked the nostalgic era rogue, you will love this portable version that will frustrate you and entertain you at the same time for hours and hours on end. We managed to beat it once in the hundreds of times we've played it and we keep chasing that high of beating it again. Best rogue clone in the app store hands down.

We can't stop playing this app! We've always loved the awesome and cute graphics. The excitement it brings each time you explore each floor of the dungeon and the cool stuffs you pick up along the way. We highly recommend this to anyone who wants a simple to play, yet addicting game.

Hello everyone, You hold in your hand one of the oldest games in the App Store, based on one of the oldest computer games in existence. Many hobgoblins died to bring you this update. It was quite a battle, but Rodney the Rogue never backs down from a challenge! We may be the developer but we still play it regularly ourselves. Hopefully you enjoy this completely refreshed version of Rogue Touch as much as we do. Thanks for your support over the years! :).

Ive played the iPhone version for years and love it. The iPad version – not so much. There are no shocking, blessed, or any other powerful weapons available even when you get to a level where you sense powerful magic there is none to be found. Ive gone beyond level 80 on the iPhone but cant get past 22 on the iPad. Tragic really.

Update: maybe there is a fun game here. We didnt really look because the controls were not at all to our liking Original review: Disappointed. Skip this Reply to response: Appreciate the reply, we havent played true OG rogue but am familiar with all sorts of modern rogue likes. Our main problem with this game is the tough/swipe controls. Really found it unintuitive and deleted the game after like 20 moves.

We had high hopes given the reviews. It did not live up to our memories of a rogue, long ago. All hype, no substance.

Thank you so much for updating this for 64 bit. Rogue Touch was a day one purchase when it released for us, and one of the first games we bought. We are glad it has been updated to work on iOS 11.

This game never gets old! It is our favorite App Store game.

Best in its class for iOS. It combines everything that makes old-school Rogue great with an intuitive touch control system. Hours of fun and well worth the money.

We have played this game for years and we cannot stop.

Just like the original, only better! And just as addictive. Just an update. This is STILL the one and only game that we keep playing and playing and playing. Perhaps because it is so quick and simple, when we are waiting at the doctors or for a bus, or train, or anything. We dont have to remember what we were doing last time we played and it automatically saves. We have to get a new phone (ours is a 3GS still) but this will definitely move to the new one!!) UPDATE: Have moved to the iPhone 6 plus and this is STILL our favorite game. LOL! Dont change a thing.

We usually buy our iPhone games, since we hate in-app purchase or ad supported crap. This game is an excellent rendition of Rogue on iPhone, the best we've played. If you're a fan of NetHack or ADoM, and you're wondering if this is worth 3 dollars: Yes! Pro Tip: Character gen is based on your input name. Try googling a list of compatible names. The references are hilarious.

This has to be one of our favorite games on our iPhone. Even though the game is as hard as nails, but that just adds to the fun.

When is the update you have been promising for over a year!!!! Please update soon.

We've played Rogue and Nethack on a couple of other platforms but stopped enjoying it after a short while. But we cannot put this game down! Every time we die (frickin' trolls!!), we go right back in! We think we're starting to get the hang of it after about a week and made it down to level 19. Must find the amulet.

More than worth the money- if you enjoyed the original Rogue (or any other roguelike), this one will keep you entertained. Controls are very usable for a touch screen.

With more enjoyable graphics than the original, the gameplay itself feels identical. We wish there were a way to save and make copies of games, in order to cheat death, or maybe have some sort of "hardcore"/"easy" system, where you could respawn on lev 1 with no equipment after dying, or something. We know that would differ from the original, but we think having different modes like that would add to the playability of the game for a lot of people. Anyway, love the job they've done with this app, and happy that they're still supporting and updating it, years after we got it. Easily 5 of 5 stars. :).

Best Rogue remake, but last update didn't installing on iPhone 5 :-(.

Love the game but it keeps freezing & must be deleted and reinstalled. Tired of losing scores.

Reminds us of the old rogue , it's fun and simplistic . Wish you could pick classes and have food or food drops after you kill creatures.

A nice and tidy roguelike dungeon crawler. As a fan of rogue, nethack and angband – this is a perfect appification of the originals. The controls are simple (if a little poorly explained) and the normally lengthy list of functions has been simplified as well – which makes for an easy to pickup and hard to put down app. Difficulty is good – expect to play 30 minutes to get to level 10+.

Either fix this app or take it off of the store. It doesn't explain that it is hopelessly broken until after you buy it. It hasn't been updated in ages and Does Not Work on newer devices. This is dead. Bury it.

Slow and glitchy, probably because the devs haven't updated in forever. No menu, no game restart, no tutorial, and it won't let us listen to outside audio. The game itself seems fun but the app is pretty much unplayable.

Why does every rogue like on the apple App Store? It's like a requirement. This is so boring. And the Ui is terrible. Get pixel dungeon. It's on iOS now. Should be free!!! Not worth any money.

No stairs to go back up to previous levels, no deities, no altars, no classes or different races, and no artifacts etc. It is like a completely stripped nethack.

The game freezes on a regular basis. It's worthless & we've reloaded this crap for the last time.
