Description
In an alternate reality in 1920s Europa, it’s been several years since the ""Great War"", but the ashes of the conflict are still hot and the war is entering a new phase. The first conflict saw the emergence of some incredible engines of war known as Mechs. Built by ""The Factory"", an independent city-state which has since become the object of everyone’s desire, these technological monstrosities roam the snowy landscapes of Europa. Be the hero of one of the five factions – Saxony Empire, Crimean Khanate, Rusviet Union, Polania Republic or Nordic Kingdom – and become the richest and most powerful nation in all of Europa during these dark times! To assure the victory of your people, you will need to explore and conquer new territories, enlist new recruits and deploy your forces by building formidable and terrifying combat Mechs. Replay history in a fictional past full of mechanical engines and technology, where each choice you make will be critical. Choose your battles with care, because in Scythe, victory is achieved with and for the people!
Gameplay:
- Asymmetry: every player starts the game with different resources (energy, coins, keen combat sense, popularity…), a different starting location and a secret objective. The starting positions are specifically set to contribute to the uniqueness of every faction and the asymmetrical nature of the game.
- Strategy: Scythe offers players almost complete control over their fate. The only elements of chance apart from each player’s individual secrete objective card are the Encounter cards, which players draw to interact with the citizens of newly explored lands. Combat is also handled by way of choice; no luck or chance is involved.
- Engine Building: Players can improve their construction abilities to become more efficient, build structures that improve their position on the map, enlist new recruits into their faction, activate mechs to dissuade opponents from invading and expand their borders to reap greater types and quantities of resources. This aspect creates a feeling of energy and progression over the course of the entire game. The order in which players get to develop their economy and technologies adds to the unique feel of every game, even when playing as the same faction several times.

- Logging in 2 the same accounts on 2 devices – If a player logs into the same account X on two devices, they will not be logged out of the device they had logged on in the first place. Instead, if they exit the main Play Online lobby on either device, they will be kicked out of their account on both devices.
- Full scale invasion achievement – Achievement is not always awarded despite meeting the conditions.
- Fix for infinite loading screen bug – log in into your Game Center using the same account as in Apple Store

Scythe: Digital Edition Reviews
The game itself is awesome, we love it. The issue is with playing other people. Occasionally the game will just freeze randomly causing you to restart the app. Sometimes you can rejoin the game, but sometimes it doesnt give you that option. Also, the moves can be finicky. We’ve had games where it glitched out and didnt give us any options other than end turn. It can be pretty frustrating. Im not sure how active the development team is, but we hope theyre working on fixing these issues. Still, as we said, Scythe is one of the best board games we’ve ever played and overall, this is a very good version of it.
We were really excited to try the digital edition for iOS, but unfortunately this version is completely broken. The app wont get past the initial loading screen so theres no way to play it at all. We tried it on both our iPhone and iPad to no avail. The PC version works great! Hopefully they fix this version soon. Requested a refund for the time being but will happily update our review and purchase again when its fixed. Update: they just released a new update, but the game is still broken. Same problem, cant get past loading screen.
As of Dec 2022, this app does not work on iOS 15.7, running on an iPhone XR. Never gets past loading screen.
Fantastic game, great app, but its still missing the Wind Gambit and Rise of Fenris expansions, and it has been out for years at this point.
The latest update makes the game freeze during almost every match. IPad 6th gen iOS 16.1.1. Please fix!
Totally lame that it doesnt get past the loading screen when on airplane mode! We specifically bought this for a cross country flight.

We have followed the steps to migrate to knights of unity from asmodee. Net. NOT WORKING. We JUST WANT TO PLAY SCYTHE ONLINE. PLEASE SEND HELP.
Turns out our issue was not being signed into Apple GameCenter. Once we did that we were able to launch the game and play online. App works great now!
Since Dec 2022, game hangs up saying loading. Deleting and iOS updates dont help. 1/27/23: logging into Apple Gamecenter solves the problem. Wish we didnt have too but lots of Apps use it.
We bought this app to use as we travel a lot, and hope to get on the plane. But the quote off-line mode requires you to have a Internet connection so it is almost always unusable on a plane. This is why we rated it 4 stars. Game is good, mechanics are solid. Fun game overall.
Great game and the app plays well. Our one complaint is that you cannot play an offline game, unless you are online. Oh the irony. We work for an aerial survey company and spend some long boring days up in the air. Was hoping to fill some of that time with some scythe, but instead we get a forever loading screen, even with the ipad in airplane mode. Thus, unfortunately for us, the app has felt largely like a waste of money, because we cannot use it in the one place we wanted to use it most. Please remove the online requirement for offline games. Its ridiculous.
Bought this as a travel ipad game,and it works greatwhen you have an internet connection. When trying to play on an airplane, we were not able to get past the loading screen and just watched the circle spin for 5 minutes. So, buyer beware; if you are online you can play offline, but if you do not have an internet connection you cannot play at all.
Scythe is a great game, but this is a awful conversion. Multiple times, this app has ignored our faction and mech abilities, in addition to the very rules of the game. We regret buying this, so to anyone who reads this, dont buy it. This is a great idea largely wasted.
We really like Scythe and the digital version is great, when we can clear the loading screen. For the past week we can’t clear that screen and nothing works to fix it. Please help so we can play it again!
If it doesnt work we cant rate it any higher. Was working previously, now it doesnt. Deleting and reloading didnt help.
Got stuck at loading page at initial boot for 30+ minutes. We couldnt play even one time.
The app gets stuck on the loading page. Complete waste of $8 – Knights of Union is just stealing peoples money for a completely non-functional app.
Last update 4 weeks ago. Just bought this. We have internet connection. Just sits there. Wont load. Deleted then downloaded again to no avail. So. Can we get our money back?

We just bought this game and it constantly says loading, even after waiting for a long time, never opened.
You have to be connected to the internet for the game to load to the main screen. Though there is an Offline game mode, you cant access it unless you are online. Its nonsensical.
We love this game but we cant seem to figure out how to increase the bot difficulty. Easy is too easy. Any advice app designers? Im not sure where to look.
This is a great app for a great game. The developers need to make it a little easier to look at your competitors player mats. It is a big deal when you ate playing the board game. We are not sure there is a way on the app or at least we have not figured it out Hopefully this is something they will develop soon it would be a six-star gave if they did.., pun was fully intended!!!
- Sometimes Togawa and Albion, after moving the hero, do not have the opportunity to set a trap. 2. Sometimes goals don’t work. 3. The function of turning off tracking the actions of the enemy is very necessary. This makes it very difficult to think and plan your move when you are forced to watch the actions and adventure cards of opponents in full screen. Please make the function to disable the ability to monitor the actions of opponents, as it was implemented in the Steam version.
Id love the game more if there was SOUND when playing on our iPad. Sound works perfectly on our iPhone though.
We recently got into the Scythe board game and was very excited to try the digital version so that we could play more often. However after playing around 10 games of this version there are some huge issues and we dont think we will be playing anymore. First, the sound has never worked for us. We’ve restarted the app multiple times and made sure the option is on -still no sound. Not a huge deal but we feel this is a bug they need to fix. Next, we know the rules say everybody gets a random faction/mat combination, but if Im playing bots offline we should be able to pick what combo we want. On top of this, it picks Crimea for us every single time!!!! Lastly, the AI for the bots is garbage. We have beat the hardest difficulty bots ever single time we try. Its not even challenging or fun and Im not even that good at the game. To conclude, dont buy this if you want to choose your own faction/mat, want a decent challenge, dont want to get stuck playing the same faction over and over again, and play without sound. This was very disappointing for us and Im not expecting it to improve.
The fact that you have to have all of the friends you want to play an ASYNCHRONOUS game with online at the same time to setup the game is downright unforgivable. It should be a very simple change to allow you to invite friends from a friends list without then being online. The logistics of getting all the friends you want to play a game with on at the same time when its async is a huge unnecessary hassle. As well made as this app is, that is such a glaring issue that we cant help but to bring our review down to 2 stars. What good is a great app if you cant even easily play it with your friends?
The game is good adaptation waiting till you are deep into a game to force account creation is scummy.
Im not sure exactly what update did this, but the iPad version is impossible to play online for us now. It sits at authenticating when we go to online or to login settings. Just hangs. We’ve uninstalled, restarted, reinstalled. Nothin. Im on iOS 15.5. Too bad for now.
Used to love playing this especially on planes. Recently got halfway through a match while on a plane with no internet access. Game spammed messages for us to sign up for an account and wouldnt let us ignore it. Wish we could get our money back for the bait and switch.
We want to report a bug, but there seems to be no app support. We captured a video of the issue. Mech is unable to drop resources after moving one space with workers. 1. Pick up workers + 3 metal 2. Move one space 3. Drop 3 metal 4. Move another space The metal continues moving with the mech despite dropping them.
Have run into a number of glitches that can be super frustrating. Most recently not being able to use the submerge much advantage with the Nordic Faction. Please fix. Thanks!
This is a great conversion of a very complicated board game, however 2 glaring issues keep it from being 5 stars. 1. The incessant Asmodee account pop-ups are infuriating. Especially when we normally only play offline against the CPU. Its even more annoying to get the pop-ups in airplane mode on a flight. 2. There is no undo mid-turn. Sometimes we accidentally tap on something to clear/open a window, we tap instead of drag or in some cases, we would like to see what move is possible; but either way, we have to finish the turn, wait for all the CPU turns, pretend we didnt see what they did and then hit undo. Lets get a better undo for a game with so many options 3. Smaller problem, but the way to check opponents game mats is glitchy/broken for us on iPad.
So far the game is well done, mirrors the pc port well and awesome job being able to play both pc and mobile players. Needs the following updates: 1) change the timer from a total per game to total per turn. For instance, when someone is AFK, the game will just let their 20min timer run out. Change each turn to a set timer like 30-60 seconds 2) show all future available upgrades, not just the next available 3) design a better method for flag/trap dropping, and pop up a reminder to do so 4) drop someone who doesnt load into the game, it just freezes the game for everyone 5) show the name of the board you are using with your faction.
Scythe is our favorite board game. When this app works we love it. The last game we played was 7 players; two humans and five AI. The game skipped Polania and Rusviet each turn. Also, we had all of our enlists and each time our neighbor would take a bottom row action it would show that we received our bonus but not ACTUALLY give it to us. Insane. Why cant this game be fixed? Plenty of people have complained.
Please add rotating camera. It would make a pretty game prettier.
This game is absolute pig filth, you cant tell what your opponents are doing and the game ends ABRUPTLY when one player gets to 6 stars no matter what, too bad thats not the win condition! The person with the most coins wins!? The game is an economic cesspool not worth playing! We really wanted to like this game and have played it multiple times trying to, but almost always even when we win we have no idea how we won or how the opponent won. Point salad games are so stupid, way to many small ways of getting points and nothing to focus on. Extremely disappointed. But the art is great! At least worth one star!
Playing against ai is fine. But with real people, it is hard to tell what is happening, and lose movement if you take a call. Very buggy.
The game is good but the app doesnt let you undo a move when you are playing online. There are so many times we touch the wrong character or space and our whole turn is ruined. This oversight on the app developers side ruins the whole game.
Absolutely worthless Async functionality if you cant invite your buddies if they arent currently online. Im suppose to get 5 people to be online at once for an async game? Why?
We’ve played the Steam version as well and the iPhone version functions just as well. We can understand that on an iPhone it would be difficult to learn (small screen space) but for someone who already has some understanding, it was very easy to use this version. Overall, we would highly recommend.
The game is fantastic and the digital version handles a lot of the things that are especially confusing for new players when they begin, which is great. It’s often difficult to tell what your opponent is doing during their turn and to know exactly what happened, however, and the randomizer isn’t especially random, tending to assign the same factions and mats in a row with only minor variations. Some way of fixing the former would be great, but the latter makes it difficult to fully explore the game without making random choices outside of the game proper.
Great job with game, we’ve been enjoying it very much. Only played offline so far. Waiting for friends to DL so we can play online. Looking forward to future updates! Couple things we found while playing. 1. Player 1 name does not save, so have to enter it each time. 2. Undo issue. When performing undo after move, and our character landed on encounter card, game does not go back to move selection. 2b. If want to undo 1st move, we have to complete all moves before undo.
This seems like an interesting game. We say seems because it crashes every few minutes.
Every time we try to login or click the Play Online button, the app freezes up displaying an Authenticating… Message. This worthless app has been a complete waste of money.
Please remove the annoying pop-up during the game that keeps asking us to create an Asmodee account!
