Reviews:

"Sometimes a brilliant game comes along and delivers both nostalgia and excellent fun. Septourian is such a game: it’s also surprisingly rich despite its simple graphics and the generated world" – iOS RPG-site

"Got it thinking it would keep me entertained for a bit.. ended up playing for an hour straight. And more. Its a nice crpg with a bit of rogue mixed in, and its a procedural world so thats really nice. The quests are also random so you get things like “i saw a nose drop a regen at artonyian crypt” which gives me a good laugh. I also think the dev nailed the ZX vibes cuz the colours and the music really make me believe this game was made a while ago. Also the lack of story dont bother me as i dont really look for story in games anyways. 9/10"

"Solid little portrait RPG that def gives early dragon quest vibes with a wild color scheme and some rogue elements. Def worth checking out!"

"Wonderful hidden gem. A highly minimalistic party-based RPG using only the 16 color palette of the ZX Spectrum. The passionate solo dev‘s inspirations for this game were the early Dragon Quest games, Breath of Fire, Final Fantasy 6, Lufia 2, Diablo 2 and the Souls series. Games are randomly created, so the world map is different each time you restart the game. To me, it really feels like an early Dragon Quest prototype, in the best way. The dev also added some quality of life things like the option for auto battle. And that‘s a good thing, because random battles surprise you a lot, and like its influences this game is grindy. Especially early on you cannot move far away from your starting town. In it waits a safe orb where you can use your XP to upgrade your character. Die in battle, and you get revived there, but without any of the hard-earned XP. But you keep all your items and money. So, dying is not too punishing.

All in all, it‘s an absolutely lovely little game that is keeping me glued the longer I play. Basically the gameplay essence of a classic turn-based JRPG, minus the epic story."

Community Insight:

We hesitate to call something like this retro because it has quite a few newer concepts to it and isnt particularly backwards gazing except for the notable exception that the game expects you to play it to understand it like many of the games of yore. It feels like you should have a manual to read but the missing information is all there in the game anyway just sort of waiting to be discovered. We initially picked it because the ZX palette is close to our beloved EGA palette which makes this a saturated colors on a black background wonderland. The monsters are as weird as you want them and the animations go a long way to imbuing personality. If you crave exploration and perhaps pushing a little bit farther than you ought to then we can think of no higher recommendation.

Who picked the horrible, horrible, and we mean really bad colors for this game? We really like playing it but we dont know how to stop the bleeding from our eyes. Thats how bad it is. You can obviously see in the screenshots for the game. Its sooo bad. So yeah great game, but just the worst possible color scheme in the history of gaming we think. We are totally exaggerating but yeah it looks pretty bad. We do like the game and we are joking about how bad the colors are. They are bad, but we think its still worth playing.

This is a very well thought out game for what it is. Somewhat rogue line in design mixed with RPG qualities. In which time slips happen because its fun. Once you get used to the mechanics we keep coming back to play. The only issue we have is that the game freezes in Rebirth Two leveling up over 300. Hoping an update comes around, but we would recommend highly to pass the time in those slow spots in the day.

Lundstroem has committed an act of somaturgy, imbuing a game devoid of dialogue and narrative with personality. Games that explore the premises of a world via mechanics are uncommon. Games that hone in on that dynamic by eschewing narrative entirely are a genuine rarity.

This is unbelievable. Such a masterpiece. We found this game while lying very sick in bed. We were so depressed about our health deteriorating. Upon playing this game, our fears gradually went away and feeling better. We will continue to play this to make us back to what we were again! You deserve an award. Thanks! Edit: Finally hit Rebirth 2 and the challenge is great! Edit2: Leveling a character past 500 crashes the game. Still fun to play regardless of no longer being able to level up.

This is great but it needs… 1. Haptic settings should be remembered between launches. 2. Walking speed needs a faster option. 3. Battles need a ffwd mode, and a run away function.

We adore this game, been looking for something like this for a long time – could play it for hours on end or pick it up for a couple minutes.

We love this game been playing it non stop! Excited to see how far this game goes.

Ive been looking for something like this and its amazing. Love it.
