Shadowgate is one of the most well-known and beloved point-and-click adventure titles in gaming history. As one of the original titles in the popular MacVenture series that went on to be celebrated on the NES, GBC, and Nintendo 64, Shadowgate quickly endeared players with its fantastic atmospheric soundtrack, perilous locations to progress through, countless puzzles to solve, and more ways to gruesomely die than gamers previously thought possible. Thrust into the role of "The Seed of Prophecy," players travel deep into the living castle, in hopes of defeating the evil that dwells within – the dreaded Warlock Lord.

Now, nearly 30 years after the original version haunted Mac and NES gamers, the original development team behind that timeless classic is back with a full re-imagining of the original Shadowgate. Much more than a port, the team at Zojoi has painstakingly redesigned the game from the ground up, adding in tons of new mind-bending puzzles, lots of new rooms with stunning hand-painted 2D graphical detail, and more objects to interact with and help you along your quest.

Decide how YOU want to play this new, re-imagined Shadowgate! Want the modern adventure experience? Use the wheel-based icon command system. Want the retro experience? Employ the Classic command system and turn on the retro graphics, soundtrack, text box, and room transitions. Want a more cinematic experience? Switch to Immersive mode by auto-hiding the UI and using customizable hotkeys to explore the castle. Or mix and match the options to satisfy your play style. In Shadowgate, there are plenty of new features and fun throwbacks to the original version to satisfy veteran adventurers and newcomers alike!

Hear from the Players – Shadowgate Reviews

Find out what gamers are saying about Shadowgate:

What an excellent remake of one of our favorite games from the NES era the option to have the original music and transitions etc is icing on the cake. Im thoroughly enjoying playing through this. We need the same kind of remake for Deja vu and Uninvited as well please!

Looks like Im 5 years late to this party. Whilst sheltering in place we ran across an old NES lets play video of Shadowgate – we thought to myself Wouldnt it be cool if someone did a complete remake of Shadowgate with updated graphics and BGM? So after a quick search our mind was blown. This is exactly what we were hoping for! Im 1hr deep into this game and having a blast. Hats off to the team for creating the atmosphere Shadowgate always deserved. If youre new to Shadowgate and have tried games with similar mechanics (Myst, etc.) give this one a try. Its the best $3 we’ve spent all month.

We had never played this before, and thought it was awesome. We had to rely on hints a few times, but it was still fun and it is decently long. People who rely on teleporting maps and hidden objects might not enjoy this as much, but if you want to take the time to get involved in the atmosphere and character, you may like it.

This is and always was the greatest game for original NES (BattleToads was cool too) and now for the iPad!! We’re so pumped that we may download the original game for the iPad too. Everyone’s gotta download, play, love it and rate it a PERFECT 5 STAR!

This is a great remake. If you enjoyed the original NES game then this app will captivate you for days. If you like Doors And Rooms type games… This game is a step above!

Amazing game. We played the NES as a kid. And it was challenging. Well this doesn’t let us down. Hands down a pleasure. Graphics, story, controls! Amazing. If you can get a copy of the NES and play it. You will appreciate this one 100% worth the price as well.

This is the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) classic brought back to life with new elements. You are to traverse the castle Shadowgate to stop a Warlock from bringing forth a great evil. Its a great point and click adventure. Youll spend hours figuring out the castles secrets and extras added.

If youre a fan of point and click adventures, dont miss out on this one.

Summary version: Point-and-Click, verb driven (take, use, hit etc), first(ish) person view adventuring at its roots, with simple and cryptic puzzles for which the genre is known mixed in and seasoned with nostalgia of the original for good measure. If you liked the originals you’ll treat this adventure equally fondly… Including the puzzle frustration that results as you seek solutions. Need more? Read on. —————- If you were looking for the Mac/NES game you remember, this is the official spiritual successor to those titles! It’s not a half baked remake or a simple re-skin. This is the original castle reimagined, and nostalgia permeates the game at every twist and ill-fortuned turn. If you are new to the point and click adventuring world this is an excellent start. But if you are seasoned in the ways of the original castle… Be warned, your nostalgic memories shall be both friend and foe as old trials are no longer quite as they seem. All-in-all, this update of the original entry into the Shadowgate saga stands in its own right, with a new visual style, remixed and new music tracks, new and old puzzles, and plenty of outside-of-box solutions and some traditional frustrating "it takes THAT to solve this conundrum?!" styled challenges thrown in. And if you take the wrong path, fear not! The Reaper shall be waiting for you… Just around the next corner, down the next fall, or at the end of a not so brilliant decision… Just waiting… Like an old friend. So, still with us this far? Then it would be a sad thing if your Shadowgate adventure ended here, so go give it a try!

Not only does this game deliver but it also brings back the old soundtrack as an option. You even have the option to switch to the original user interface. Would love to see more games like this or sequels!

This was an incredible franchise on the Nintendo platforms. We’re very pleased to see it come to apple. Now all we need is the immortal to be redone.

We’ve been following the original since its release on the big N. You guys have done a fantastic job of remaking this classic! Only one request; can you please add the original as a bonus or even as in app?

This game was really killer. Was trying to get a good quest point n click adventure reminiscence of the old days, this one is a great port of the classic to the iPhone. Lots of gameplay, difficult puzzles and traps, and overall a lot of fun. There was mention of a sequel but it has still yet to show up?!

Love the game brings back a ton of memories. Especially that music! As a kid the whole family would sit around the NES and play together. (with one person person controlling the game and everyone making suggestion and voting on next steps.) we tried to recreate this at a recent family dinner, but sadly the game crashes as soon as screen mirror is turned on.

Every time we minimize the app, to use another function of our phone, the app closes entirely. Please fix this. Otherwise, we are enjoying it.

Ez to pick up or stop in the middle and always engaging. Different than the first yet just as enjoyable.

Please fix the auto reboot when you minimize the game. We keep losing our place from answering messages or accidentally minimizing to home screen. Otherwise… Beeaautiful remake. Every fan HAS to play this version. Fantastic. Now fix that minimize junk.

We love the game, but it shouldnt be available for phones as is. The difference between clicking on the thing youre trying for and clicking on nothing is a fraction of a fingertip and its frustrating. Maybe its more playable with a stylus, but honestly who carries those for their phones? Im using an XS and its difficult, we pity the people who tried to play this on the iPhone 6.

Im sure the game would be fun, but the text and hit boxes are too small on iPhone X. The game isnt playable on the platform to the point it shouldnt be sold for devices under a certain physical size.

Anytime we get to the point of loading into the first part of the game it force closes every time.

Unable to get game to go past opening scenes! Contacted support developers and has been over 60 days and still no word from developer. So disappointed to have purchased a game that can not be played when the original computer game was so much fun! So it doesn’t matter whether your system has everything game requires, it still doesn’t open into story/game.

We cant play this game the way its set up. It ridiculous how many steps are involved when you try to do the simplest thing. We’ve tried several times and got too frustrated and uninstalled it. Id like a refund. We know we wont get it. Its not worth the $2.99 that we paid. The original game seems so prehistoric now, but was so much easier to play. Big disappointment. Im also pretty sure no one will see this review. We left a different review yesterday and we dont see it.

Loved this game on the NES and absolutely love the fact Zojoi did this remake! You guys made our day or rather our entire year with this release!

We paid $119.95 for the NES version of Shadowgate – finding this for the iPad made our day. Graphics, music and game play updated and wonderful while still reminiscent of the original. Hope The Uninvited is next!

There is nothing wrong with this absolute classic game. Just make sure to read the clearly posted description that you need an iPad that at least came out after 2012.

And we’re not at all disappointed. It’s an unforgiving and beautiful game that keeps you sucked in for hours. Totally worth the money.

Great game. Another fun game in the Shadowgate series!

If you’ve ever played Shadowgate, you will absolutely love this version. The game does not play slow as someone mentioned. The developers did a knock-out job. It’s perfect.

We loved the original game and we love this updated version. We have never had any technical troubles playing on our iPad Air so be sure to check the system requirements before downloading rather than after. The new artwork and music are superb and the redesigned levels make the game fresh and enjoyable even if you do clearly remember playing the original. We especially like how you can swap the music and other elements out for their classic versions. Another great aspect is the different difficulty levels. Whereas most games scale difficulty by reducing hint options, Shadowgate goes farther by tweaking the game’s content and pace. Excellent value for the price. We are eagerly awaiting the sequel and also hope that The Uninvited and Deja Vu are on the remake list.

This is a very well-made game by first time creators who obviously love the source material and the adventure game in general. Point and click adventures usually succeed on their charm, and this one has Chris Pratt levels of charisma. From references wry to obvious, it wants you to enjoy it. The art is beautiful and engaging, and they make it easy enough for anyone to pick up and learn as they play. Of course, if you have a lot of experience with old adventure games like Monkey Island, etc, they have a classic mode which doesn’t hold your hand. Overall it’s a well-made throwback to point and click adventures of yore, so if you aren’t interested in that sort of game, do not buy it. We’re sick of ignorant people using ignorance as an excuse, especially when they haven’t even experienced the game yet. If you can’t bother to read the first line of the description, where it says iPad 3 or newer, then you don’t get to complain when it doesn’t work on your old-as-sin iPad. That’s your fault, and no one else’s. This game has been out for one day, get over yourselves.

Great remake! Our new favorite. We’re running it on iPad 2 mini with latest iOS and have ZERO problems with it. No crashes. No lag.

Check your model number on back of iPad if you are not sure it is 3rd gen or better.

The game has passible still-graphics and acceptable (though overdone) sound effects and music. Play, though, is boring. Let us qualify that… There are different kinds of games for different audiences. Apple and especially "the Editor" should do a better job of categorizing them. For instance, there should be a category for "Puzzle Games", which this is. There is no combat to speak of. There is no exploration to speak of (you can’t even turn left or right to look around). This is simply a series of still pictures that you find objects in. There is far too much repetition involved in the game (going back to where you were before, over and over again) for it to be classified as an "adventure." we love a good turn-based adventure. We loath puzzle-games. You may be different in your preferences. But the real problem with this game is that it isn’t sold as a puzzle-game, but rather as an adventure.

It crashes after the intro not sure why but bought this as soon as we saw it even deleted a few games just so we could play it please fix the issue.

Just got it and it keeps crashing. When we restart it plays a little farther each time, then crashes when it has to load again. Playing on an ipad2 with ios9.

Works perfect on our ipad4! We love it! The art is amazing, the music is great and the sound effects really give an ambience like you are there! This is the kind of game we have wanted to play on our iPad all along! We have the MacVenture version of the classic Shadowgate. This is just Shadowgate 2015! Well worth the price.

We can’t keep the game running on iPad 2. Crashes at the beginning. The art and video effects are astounding. Don’t buy it just yet. Wait til they fix the bugs. We are a little miffed that we can’t get a refund for this.

Very slow awkward game, plz refund a sap!

Crashes after intro animation. Playing on iPad mini 3 with latest iOS version. Please fix or refund our money.

For $5.00 we got a game that crashes on startup. If the fame is incompatible with our iPad, then we should be notified before the purchase and download is processed. Please update so we can play. We love point and click games, and Shadowgate for the old Mac was one of the best games we have ever played.
