Find out what gamers are saying about Shredder Chess for iPad:

We have owned Shredder on our pc for many years. We’ve even won a few games. The iPad version is the best we’ve come across on that platform. Not quite as many features as the pc version, but excellent and quite well conceived.

The AI handicap is awesome. It adjusts its strength automatically to challenge you constantly even as you improve. When we’re not playing online with lichess, shredder is the next best thing.

Great app that has been updated to restore functionality in iOS 10. Probably the best all-around chess app in the iOS world. Solid and proven engine, reasonable features (though a few things like the ability to save info to iCloud or Dropbox would be helpful), and with the most recent update, it runs pretty fast again.

This is a great iPad chess app. Several different AI playing styles. After you play enough games to establish a rating it plays at your strength level. You can save and export games if you want to analyze them using whatever PC chess engine you use. Shredder also has an online chess server for a small annual subscription fee. Just a great app for iPad.

Shredders user interface may have been overtaken by Christophe Therons Chess Pro based on the Chess Tiger engine. Despite its weaker engine, Chess Pro only narrowly wins overall as a better app due to better game analysis functionality that Shredder Chess also has. We would not recommend one over the other but rather getting both! Some of Shredders outstanding features are the simplicity and elegance of the user interface, ability to randomly alter the engines personality, automatic Elo rating adaptation based on game outcomes, ability to transmit games individually or as a collection of games in PGN format. Chess Tiger Pro currently cannot email as a collection of games but rather individually. Despite its age, Shredder remains one the best chess playing apps on iOS. Its playing strength can automatically be adapted to the users playing strength if desired. There is an opening book. There is a basic position analysis function. There are puzzles. There is an indicator about which side is winning during the game. While not as good as a graph, it still makes it easy to detect blunders when there are abrupt shifts of the indicator. The biggest negative about Shredder is that its iPhone version is a separate purchase :-(

We really like this chess app. It’s very strong, has a nice rating system, when you set it for lower levels, it degrades play in a more realistic fashion than many chess games. It’s a great app. Having said that, there are still curious oddities. * For example, the new game;setup position; enter moves; start analysis menu is using the export icon. That makes no sense to us. The iOS app uses the + icon, which while not perfect, seems closer. Im not sure why the iPad and iPhone apps use different icons. * we wish it had cut/paste and import/export features to get PGN/FEN representations in and out of the app. * we wish the game database could (optionally) be shared between devices. Perhaps put it in iCloud? * we wish the iPad game supported multitasking (both split-view and slide-over), allowing us to read a chess book and analyze a game at the same time. * we wish the app supported annotations, tappable move list, etc. At the very least, given all of this iPad screen real-estate, show us more than two moves in the list at a time! But we still love this app. We think it’s the best chess app out there. But its not keeping up with device capabilities introduced over the last few years…

It’s great that Shredder has an app for iPhone. IPad and even Mac. However, what’s missing is syncing. Why hasn’t iCloud syncing been built into these apps? We should be able to start a game on our iPad and finish it on our iPhone or Mac.

Shredder has a very nice interface and a strong engine, but it seems it should include some of the features of the pc version for training, time control and variation analysis so that it can offset the relatively high price of the application… Reason we are writing this is because if you download the FREE app Stockfish, we are afraid you will find perhaps a slightly better chess application. We hope shredder increases value in coming updates.

Shredder’s iOS chess version is a well designed app. But the reply to a recent email we sent the company was misleading. Importing outside games was not added to this recent update. It still cannot show a move list which would allow you to quickly return to an earlier point to attempt a different move sequence. As a result, reviewing a game in Shredder is more cumbersome than Stockfish, tChess, Hiarcs, and ChessHD. The full-computer version of Shredder was just updated to v13 from v12 so we assume this app is stronger? The game’s analysis function is nice but less useful than those of the tChess and "Analyze This" chess apps. It is hard to evaluate playing strength between the top iOS chess apps but Stockfish almost certainly is the strongest, and it may get an update soon as the full-computer version went from v7 to v8 a few weeks ago. Important – Stockfish is FREE. Shredder’s value is its interface – the Puzzle Section is fun but a more extensive iOS "chess puzzle only" app is available and less expensive. The game play interface is easy to use(!) and attractive, and we enjoy the "game evaluation meter" over a simple number for whom is ahead in a game as seen in the other chess apps. Lastly, it is still possible that more database and game importing features will be added if the firm’s recent email to us was accurate. We like Shredder and we do have hope.

Elo is only 2600 and plays like 1700. We have played several games against the engine and Shredder resigned every game but one. This app wont teach you ANYTHING!! What rhymes with cam? (SCAM)

The engine plays at lower levels a "human" style in that mistakes are of the sort a class level player would make. The puzzles are excellent for honing your tactical skills.

Puzzles excellent for honing tactical skills!

This App really needs no introduction! We play the puzzles daily and have been a fan of Shredder since 2008! Great training aid for anyone interested in the game.

This is a first class app. It’s designed in several ways to help you improve your game and to enjoy the trip–most notably its ability to play at any level, so it’s at just the right level for you. Our only complaint is that the elo rating it gives you seems to be wrong. Right now it shows us having a rating of 11390, which is obviously a mistake.

Absolutely the best chess app. Could do with an update though ;)

We have several chess apps on our iPad. We find that we gravitate toward two of them, coming back to play against Shredder all the time. Yes, the engine is dated, but we find that it plays a very "human" version of chess. Instead of chess engines that make stupid mistakes at lower levels, Shredder’s lower levels make tactical mistakes to find and exploit. We also like the way Shredder tracks our ELO and can adjust playing strength to give us a run for our money. ELO ratings seem a bit inflated, but it’s more fun for us to play at or above our ability. All we all, it’s worth the few dollars.

Shredder is a one of the best chess apps. However pieces are blurry and difficult to see on iPad, especially against all of the dark boards. The shadow renderings on the pieces add to the blur effect and confuse the eye enough to be distracting. Please update graphics and add more light- colored boards. Otherwise great app!

This is our favorite Chess app for the iPad, but there is room for improvement; read on… Pros: 1) It’s easy to use 2) It has a chess coach and analysis 3) It has a strength bar indicating who has the advantage and how strong that advantage is. 4) It has puzzles Cons: 1) The UI could use a little attention A) It’s starting to feel dated B) Some of the images are fuzzy, not retina or not pixel aligned C) The menu button is confusing as its really a Back button on a navigation controller. D) There is no warning when doing something that will make the game unratable. The $10 off coupon is nice but on the Mac we prefer the Hiarcs chess app as it has more features, is stronger and they seem to treat upgrades to a new version more fairly.

Once it’s obvious you’re going to win, it calls a stalemate and stops the game.

. We dont think you last move was good keeps popping up even if our next move is a checkmate.

It is the best app out there but it much more clunky then iPhone app. Control panel located inconveniently at the top of the page. Seemingly haphazard placement of controls means toggling between different pages especially when playing consecutive puzzles. The whole thing feels slipshod and not very well thought out. Seems the whole thing could be streamlined for better of use.

We play this both on our IPAD and on our PC. There are so many features that we like that we could or do no have the time to name them all. Let us just say that for an 1800 player it is a great learning tool and partner. We love the APP and our dog laying at our side while we play. We can’t ask for anything more.

Challenging play, with a ton of puzzles that prompt you to find the best move in a given position. Excellent interface that allows you to customize every aspect of the user experiencethe computer’s rating/level of difficulty, the board, pieces, background, sounds, etc. In our opinion, this and Chess Pro with Coach are the two best chess apps for the iPad for the money. Absolutely worth the 8 bucks we paid for it. Overall, we highly recommend this programespecially for the returning/intermediate player.

The ideal chess app, perfect for all skill levels. This app has got us back into chess after a years long hiatus!

We like listening to music while playing chess, but this update stops us from doing so. Please fix it. We really do believe that this is the best chess app out there!!

This is easily our favorite chess app for iPad. Shredder has a more human-opponent-like feel to its play than any other chess engine we use for training. We also love that the app comes with puzzles for tactics training.

Thanks for this update which includes chess clocks. Those Shredder for iPad users who are accustomed to playing while playing music on iPad in the background should know that with the update, this is only possible if the Shredder sound effects are turned off. This is because in the update the sound channel was changed from the ringer/effect channel to the music channel (as Eiko Bleicher informed us when we inquired about this). Absolutely a fantastic chess app.

While feature-rich, the game focuses attention on the game itself. Being able to see move assessment as one plays is an excellent teaching tool. At varying levels, the games offer opportunities to be exploited, without blundering. We enjoy the games every time we play and we believe playing the game helps us to improve all of the time.

We love Shredder. It’s a highly challenging program, that adjusts it’s skill to match the players. If you want to play rated games, you can. And Shredder will then give you a rating. There is nice Opening game variety. The boards are highly attractive.

Great app with nice feature. We are getting good training out of this nice chess program. We do wish to have multiple players support (ie. Save and load each individual rating vs computer strength)

We play at least one game of chess with Shredder per day. Love the puzzles, love the auto adjust rating system, love the analysis mode so we can see where we could have made a better move.

This time, for real.. THE ONLY CHESS APP. U NEED!! For real…

We like this chess program very much. It is good for both begginers and experts. It has a very cool rating feature so you can observe your progress. It has also built in chess puzzles. Graphics are very nice. We reccomend it, strong 5 stars!

It wasn’t the first or wont be the last chess app we will put our hands on, ANYONE who already played t-chess pro we can exchange.

Simply the best chess app. We have ever seen! The program’s self-adjusting playing strength sets up to play @ an ELO about 100 – 150 points above your demonstrated playing strength. Statistically, that suggests that you are only going to win about one in three — unless you IMPROVE! Which you will!! The thousands of little puzzles will sharpen even the master’s tactical eye, and razor hone your game! Simply terrific!! Definitely fun!

Fantastic chess app! Love the puzzle feature. It really helps in learning to evaluate a position quickly. Nicely done!

As someone who loved chess as a kid and struggles to find anyone with the patience to play, this app is perfect. No where else can we be challenged in a way we learn from. We’ve played shredder on our phone for a long time, and this is a spectacular port to the iPad. Kudos guys!

Great app for the 3.99 price tag. Needs a chess clock to finish it off.

Shredder is an outstanding piece of software. The interface is simple and easy to use and it plays well but is scalable. The only negatives are that it crashes in IOS8 on the iPad and when set to 1100 or so it makes foolish blunders that are not typical of players of that level ( e.g. Here’s our queen. You can thank us later.).

We think there are two main areas to address – the Shredder app itself, and Shredder on the iPad specifically. If you’re familiar with Shredder on the iPhone, you can basically skip the first part of this review. First – Shredder is a great chess program on either platform. It has a "look and feel" that makes it a joy to use. This look and feel translates well to the iPad version. The engine can be customized to playing strength (Elo level) as well as "personality". It will show you (optionally) a relative score based on it’s analysis that suggests which player is doing better – this score does appear to be somewhat based on the computer’s strength – we were one move away from mate before it realized the score was not tied… The "score meter" is a nice feature that is helpful during training sessions, but not always very accurate. Additionally, the app will show you what opening is being played, and as of version 1.1 will show you which moves are most commonly played from a given position in its opening book, as well as how they score on average. It’s not as information rich as using a database like Scid, but you can take it with you anywhere. There’s an endgame table base, but we haven’t really used that feature. You can load and save games, but there is not currently a way to import a PGN – you can reenter all the moves manually if you desire, but that’s it. If you’re familiar with the iPhone version, you pretty much know what to expect from the iPad version. The board will rotate from portrait to landscape. The "heads-up" area displays more information simultaneously, but it’s the same information as the iPhone version. It’s much better than playing the iPhone version on the iPad hardware. Overall, we think Shredder is a fantastic chess app for the iPad. It may be missing one or two features found in competitor’s apps on the iPhone, and it has one or two they don’t have. If you already have the iPhone version, you may or may not want to buy it again depending on what you think of the price (which is certainly reasonable for the software). The iPad version doesn’t currently have any features that weren’t found in the iPhone version, but we are told they are coming. That said, we always try to base our purchases on what’s available now – not what might be coming down the line. If you don’t already have a chess app, then Shredder is definitely a top contender for either the iPhone or the iPad. If you have an iPad, there seem to really only be two native options at the moment. In our opinion, Shredder has a better look and feel than tChess Pro, but tChess has one or two features that aren’t yet available in Shredder. We have found myself playing against Shredder, but using tChess to review games we have played online. Shredder now shows the opening book – now we’re just waiting for importing PGN files (preferably with a cut/paste as well as using the iOS 4 "open file in another app" feature) and we will bump to 5 stars (I think it deserves 4 3/4 now)

Great app. It would be nice if you could link to a community. Also, when you Play Position in Puzzle mode on iPad, the chess board shrinks and won’t revert to full size unless you reboot the iPad. Adding tutorials on openings, closings and standard strategies would be nice as well.

One of the best chess apps we’ve ever encountered. However, having to pay again to enjoy this same app on our iPhone–my iPhone is always with us but the iPad stays at home–is ridiculous. I’d give 5 stars but subtract two for "double-billing".

Great app for playing chess and entering games into pgn notation. No support for importing your own pgn database, even one created using Shredder for the Mac!!!!

We like this app – the meter is a cool function and so are the puzzles. We have HIARCS also and we find that it is a bit easier on that app to jump in and out of the analysis, so one critique of Shredder would be that we don’t personally find the GUI to be very intuitive. Overall a good bargain for a nice software. It would be nice to somehow have a chess app that could help explain why a move is preferred rather than just numerical analysis…. But we suppose that’s what a human coach is for. However maybe a developer could take the time to write brief verbal analysis of the chess problems themselves – this approach would be insightful for those interested in solving problems.

1- doesn’t come with a database of famous games ( not even on online one) 2- you cannot open a game from an email or text ( in case someone wants to send you his game) 3- When coordinates are displayed on the board you cannot see them clearly because they get mixed up with the pieces resting on the end rows.

Easy to use and good competitive play. The inability to play music on our device while we play and the very weak (and unexplained) suggested moves feature is very annoying. The worst is the developer refusing to acknowledge a bug where threefold repetition draws get called after only 2.5 repetitions.

This was our favorite app, particularly for the puzzels. We have spent many enteratining hours with this execllent engine. But it hasn’t worked since the introduction of iOS 8. It hangs frequently and is essentially unsable. An update has been promised, but there has been no sign of it. We hate to give Shredder one star, but until it is fixed it deserves no stars. Do not buy if you have already installed iOS 8. We are beginning to wonder if the developer is serious about supporting iOS, if not, he should remove the app from the store.
