Silversword Reviews

We rarely write reviews, and we’ve enjoyed this game for years without writing one. If ever an app deserved a positive review, this is it. We’ve played it 3 times now and am coming to the end of an adventure we started almost 6 months ago. Im bummed would love to keep it going, but now we know enough that the next time when we play Legend mode, Im going to have a blast and create the most crushing characters ever. Seriously, if you love old school RPGs, you havent played the best one ever until youve played Silversword. Its simply the best game we’ve ever played on mobile.

We just discovered this a few days ago and have already played for hours. What a beautiful tribute to our favorite game ever, Bards Tale. Thank you!!

Love it. Played BT on our C64. We’ve been looking for it again for years. Excellent game.

This is an ABSOLUTE gem! Im planning on purchasing EVERYTHING in the game to support this dev. Also, is there a Donate button? As a huge fan of Bards Tale, we see something way better! Thank you!

Great game, interesting story and characters, fun items and spells/skills, and many areas to explore.

Definitely brings back nostalgia for the old Bards Tale. Fun game so far. Beginning is a little tough if you take the random characters. Also choose the modern mode instead of classic. Super A+++ would buy again! Only thing is that online mentions a compendium to buy, and we cant find where in the app or app store to buy it.

We played the original Bards tale on the Apple IIe and C64 in the 80s. Silversword definitely scratches that nostalgia itch. Very well done!!!

Thoroughly enjoyable game with lots of old school feel. Problem solving, grinding, etc. Great job! Hoping for the flooded isles expansion!

With a surprising number of the same problems Bards Tale had. (The Bard is an almost-required member of the party, but, just as in BT, he is also next to useless in combat, except as a tackling dummy. Bards in full plate? Thieves are an annoyance for most of the game but cant be done without. And so on.) Still well worth playing.

Lots of fun goodies and monsters galore.

Mario built a truly amazing game bringing elements of all our classic favorites (Bards Tale, Wizardry). We want more!!!

We had a few issues with purchases that are all worked out now. Im old and really love games like this. Theyre hard to find. Reminds us of playing games like this decades ago with friends. Our apologies, Mario.

This game brings us back to our younger self and games we enjoyed that took a lot of patience and some thought. We decided to try this after so many years of more hectic gaming (mmos etc) and Im enjoying it very much.

Played Bards Tale way back in the day on our Commodore 64. This is a great throw back game. We bought it years ago to play on our iPad and completed the game and now we see there have been some additions to it. Also we now have an iPhone as well so we are back playing this game again.

Took us back to old games of wizardry and might and magic. Old school D&D.. Love it and thank you for putting it out there. Played shen you first developed and started playing again this week. Wish there was more like this out there.

We were looking to replay our childhood favorite, Bards Tale series (which we own on PC), though wanted the convenience and portability of our tablet. On a whim, we decided to see what was out there. We cannot say enough how ecstatic we are to have come across this absolute gem of a game! Major props to Sir Gaida! We couldnt have imagined a better CRPG fit to feed our jones! We bought the compendium as we felt that we underpaid for the game itself! If there is an option to obtain a paperback manual/compendium, a la the old school Destiny Knight days, please let us know. Im sure there are many of us gamers that would prefer pencil / paper materials, over e-manuals, to aid in our questing. ZZGO!

Isnt displaying full screen on iPhone 11 Pro but otherwise solid.

As someone that just loves the old style RPG games, this is definitely one of THE best we’ve played in a long time. We absolutely would recommend especially if you like the original computer rpg games. Id give it 6 stars.

Cant say enough how much of a gem the olde school RPG is. Love everything about it. We wish there was a second game after this one.

One of our all time favorite gaming experiences. This is the perfect marriage of old and new. No hand holding but also no needless regression to obsolete mechanics. Nostalgia games usually wear off for us but we kept at this one for over 100 hours. The expansion was a thrill and we look forward to more.

We hate paying for games. This one doesnt require a vampiric pay to play. To be clear you must buy it but after that… Have at it! The intricacies of the game mechanics can be explored if you wish, or you can just loose yourself in the story. Either way it is a whole lot of fun. A perfect blend of min/max character evolution and flavour development. The only limitation… Is your imagination. Extremely well done.

Enjoying the oldschool feel of D&D and RPGs of the early 80s put to screen. Bought the game back when it first came out but got so busy with LIFE that we didnt get to finish it. Started over from scratch and loving it. Keeps our iPad interesting besides for the usual fare. Thank you.

Well designed well conceived Maximizes the fun of a classic RPG while reducing the time consuming drudgery.

If u like Bards tale and Wizardry you will love this game.

We like the old-school RPG you on this game just the voiceover is it OK can you improve it and have a hint function in your game.

Fun old rpg style game Got spoiled by auto maps tho we change our review, there is no way to rest and heal That makes it unplayable.

A poorly implemented rip off of The Bards Tale. Every change from that game that the creator has made has resulted in a worse game. Not worth purchasing.

Really wanted to play this, but when we encounter the rats the game just stops. We can click the move buttons on and off and bring up the settings, but no other input works. Anybody have this issue?

We totally agree with other that this game has the classic RPG feel. We’ve played all of the old school games in the past. We got the game quite a while ago and played it through the first beginners quest but then set it down for a while. We’ve looked and tried other game but couldnt find anything else that gave us the old school feel. We just recently picked the game up again and find myself not being able to put it down. Is there grinding? Yes, but thats part of the classic feel. We also like the feel of leveling up your characters trying to get the best stats possible. One question, with the new game feature am we able to play multiple games at once or will we lose the game Im playing if we start a new one? We want to thank you for creating this classic masterpiece and hope you continue to grow the story.

Good price, lots of retro fun, with no In-game purchases or nags. Will keep you busy a long time.

This game as everyone else has said is similar to many old school rpg. We looked through dozens of games trying to find a game just like this! WELL WORTH a mere $3!!! If you are of the generation 2000 and after, you may not appreciate a game of this caliber. This game doesn’t have the graphic flashes that would send an epileptic into shock like perhaps the young generation craves. This game has that classic rpg feel to it, that seems to have disappeared with the invent of the smart phone! Create your own group of characters’ race and profession; dice roll over and over to get the perfect stats for each character; and roam around trying to survive and collect loot! One word for this game: ADDICTIVE!

Was looking to see if someone made a Wizardry app and found this. This is a perfect substitute!

We finished the game a number of years ago, such a great game, amazing nostalgia! Found out about expansion decided to give her a go once again. Spent the last month getting to the gate and now we have to find 10 fiery gems? What are those??? Search online, the first thing we see, hint: make sure to keep you diamonds and rubies if you want to enjoy the expansion. NOOOOOOOO!!! We end up just dropping them, now we need them? Love the game, no way we can go through again just for gems… Am we screwed??? HELP us Mario, youre our only hope!

We are a blind user just getting into gaming after using the iPad for several years. We bought this game because we find the storyline intriguing and the game was listed as accessible with VoiceOver. This is true mostly but … Navigating is still tricky. Im playing this game on a hardware keyboard, by the way. Please include descriptions of the immediate surroundings that the player is moving through so that a blind player is aware of his or her options when walking about. That way it might be possible to navigate around and avoid being stopped by too many obstacles. Other than the navigation problem, and some difficulty acquiring gold for the characters, we enjoyed the gameplay once we finally managed to get where we were supposed to go. Hi: we received your response. We should have made it clear that we were only offering suggestions, not criticizing what you have done on the game. The amount of work that goes into games like this means that a good game is just as much work to put together as a good book. Your comment that you had not designed a game for the blind was relevant, however. We personally was never under the impression that this was a game designed solely for the blind; we assumed it was a game designed for everyone, and that you had included VoiceOver support to make it accessible to a wider audience. So, we dont think its necessary to remove VOiceOver support; having a mainstream RPG that everyone can enjoy regardless of vision or lack thereof isnt something to be taken lightly. Best to you, Tayo Bethel.

After hearing that this game received improvements for VoiceOver support, we were eager to try this out. Coordinates are an okay thing to have, but only if we know what’s around us. Not just the exits, not just what kind of floor we’re standing on, but access to the map so we know where to go. If this wandering around aimlessly is what sighted people have to go through as well, then fine, this game isn’t for us. But if the first 15 minutes of the game are easy for sighted gamers, then yes, the map should be made accessible, or an explanation of things and places on the map should be given. Also, it is possible that we’ve missed something important, in which case I’d be grateful to know what we’ve missed. But for now, this game isn’t one we can recommend.

People buy Nintendo to play Mario and Zelda. They buy Sony to play Uncharted. And if theyre smart, theyll buy Apple to play Silversword! We have played a lot of games on our iPhone. Mostly RPGs. Dungeon crawlers, CRPGs, JRPGs, ARPGs, roguelikes, puzzle and board games, CCGs, the list goes on. To be sure there are some strong ports on this system (Baldurs Gate 2 for example), but there is no better native iOS game than Silversword. PERIOD. To be fair, this is mostly a rip off of original Bards Tale. If you like BT then you will, unequivocally, enjoy Silversword as well. Still, developers have been ripping off BT for decades, yet NONE of them have done it with the precision and polish of Silversword. Not in any year, on any platform. This is all the more surprising since, frankly, mobile is not a platform known for its high quality releases. Which brings us to our final point. Dev… Any plans on a PC port?? We think your target audience is not really on iOS. You would definitely have a market on Steam though, maybe even better on GOG since thats where many of the classics live these days. Silversword definitely compares favorably to many of the indie dungeon crawlers in the $10 ~ $20 range. Just something to think about… Thanks for all your hard work on this absolutely fantastic game. :)

We LOVE this game. Classic adventure… NO ADS NO REQUIRED PURCHASES NO B.S. Some with the attention span of a first-grader may find the text game boring, so you kids can skip it. The rest of us will highly enjoy this beautiful text adventure. Thank you Mr. Developer!

If you are below the age of 40 this will be an entirely new experience for you. This is a beautifully crafted role playing game with D & D rules. It is in the vein of The Bards Tale which is a landmark in the genre. This and Ultima were the cornerstones of our youth rpg gaming Be prepared for long grinds while leveling and using your brain to solve puZzles. While the game has some linear aspects it is not on rails like your jrpgs of today. Excellent and challenging and well made!!

Finally a game that brings us back to the original Wizardry from our youth. Tiltowait! Bravo! We would love to see more professions and ability to change class. We liked having Lords (fighter with priest spells) and samurai (fighters with mage spells), and would love to see a bard song that could replenish spell points. This is satisfying in every way. Bravo..

A lot of work went into this, but mobility (i.e., using an arrow key for each step and each turn) is more difficult than in Bards Tale and Exiled Kingdoms. Also we couldnt figure out what to do at night, when all the shops are closed (except wait until day).

If you played the original Bard’s Tale game way back in the day, you know what you are getting — an old school RPG that plays well for a mobile game. It’s an amazing effort by seemingly a one man team mostly so big kudos. So why only three stars? Well to give our perspective we just think the game has gaps of progression that require too much grinding and min maxing with save scumming with level ups to really manage the game and almost all newbies will not play this way and will greatly suffer and require tons of grinding. The game should have the current difficulty level for old school players and a "lite" setting for younger players (easier grinding and some level of spell point generation) to not turn off that demographic. We think it’s a fantastic game to appeal to old classic players like us (I enjoy the game) but we think they are missing out on financial opportunity with a broader base of potential players that could really get into it with some tweaks.

This is a strategy adventure game. You build your party and plan your strategy and actually have to think. Although it’s a little old school (it’s based on a CRPG / dungeon crawl game called The Bard’s Tale from the ’80s) it’s quite immersive, and you don’t need to know anything about the Bard’s Tale to play (although you should have a basic understanding of D&D style games). This is a lot of fun and well worth the cost, just don’t expect video or MMORPG things. This is a solo effort based on pictures and text, with combat taking place in rounds. The advantage is that you have some time to plot strategy, with different tactics working better in different scenarios. When you’re done, you’ll love it enough to buy the "Rise of the Dragons" expansion!

Someday we may write a long review of this game… But today is not that day. We want to get back to playing!!! We began many years ago on our life quest for adventure, treasures, and joy. Wizardry, Bards Tale, and Might & Magic opened new worlds. If you know these games, buy Silversword. If you do not… Buy Silversword and discover! We do not have the literary skill to fully encapsulate why but if you played those above you will need to play this. Thank you for creating this game and thank you for your time. Joe- we are a Monk married to a Paladin!

We loaded up Bards Tale and we were immediately hit with the difficult ui and the need for the printed manual, then we found this! It solves so much of what was wrong with the older rpg turn based games but still maintains the charm. Silversword is easy to get into, low stress, and rewarding. For a low volume game, the forums and support is amazing. Luckily we downloaded this game before we traveled to Asia and it was so nice to play a game that didnt require internet access and barely used battery. Love this game!

As someone who played the different classic RPG games (Wizardry, Bards Tale, etc.), this game is the first one that we’ve seen on iOS which truly lets us relive those fond memories!! We purchased Silversword a couple of weeks ago and am hooked on it already!! We also truly commend its creator, Mario Gaida, for being so personally involved in game updates and on the forum.

This app is completely terrible and nobody should get it. Screw you!!!

We are a huge bards tale fan and Silversword is even better. This is a great game that plays well and has all the richness of the original bards tale trilogy.

If you liked Bard’s Tale you’ll love Silversword! All the fun of that classic game but new and improved and terribly addicting. It plays beautifully on the iPhone. Best $2.99 we’ve ever spent. The sequel is incredible! Buy the Rise of the Dragons. It’s amazing. Also… Customer service and help is incredible.

If you liked Bard’s Tale, you will not be disappointed.
