Dive into Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind

Life between myths. Clans, cows, choices.

The spiritual successor to King of Dragon Pass, Six Ages combines interactive stories and turn-based strategy. Your small clan’s survival depends on its relations with the warring gods and their followers. Play involves actions such as improving pastures, exploration, trading with your neighbors, and raiding. You can even travel to the Otherworld to visit your gods. You also need to deal with crises ranging from marauding dinosaurs to diplomatic requests to illicit love. Your choices have a politico-economic impact, but some consequences might not be obvious for decades.

It’s set in Glorantha (the world of RuneQuest, HeroQuest, and 13th Age), where the laws of physics are subordinate to the whims of the gods and spirits.

Six Ages is immensely replayable, thanks to over 400 interactive scenes with multiple outcomes. Short episodes and automatic saving mean you can play even when you only have a minute or two. The built-in saga writes down the story for you. And advisors with distinctive personalities help you track your cows.

148Apps: “… absolutely worth playing. … Six Ages uniquely weaves an astounding amount of of narrative, lore, and nonbinary decision-making into its gameplay that makes it feel truly unique and special.”

Touch Arcade: “… if you want to get lost in a world full of meticulous details and gameplay that isn’t quite like anything else, you’ll want to hop on to Six Ages as soon as possible.”

Pocket Tactics: “Six Ages holds a wealth of wonders few other games can match.”

One of Rock Paper Shotgun’s top 100 PC games of all time: “All your choices create a curious and gnarled tree of a story … that is sometimes funny, and sometimes a little distressing.”

Ben Silverman: “A heady mix of “Civilization” and a Choose Your Own Adventure game… Ridiculously deep and “just one more turn” addictive…”

When you complete Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, you can continue your clan’s saga in Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out.

The game is completely accessible via VoiceOver.

Find out what gamers are saying about Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind:

We’re so glad we finally gave in and spent $10 on this game. We honestly wasn’t sure how different it’d be from King of Dragon Pass, which is one of our favorite games. In short, it’s a similar model, but set way before KODP. Things are darker, more mystical, and the stakes are even higher. Plus, the VoiceOver enhancements are great! We love the scene descriptions, new exploration system, and how you can now tell which blessings you have active, or what concerns your clan has. We haven’t touched KODP since we got this, just because we’ve been so hooked.

A fun game if you like storytelling but at times you feel the pressure as the world around you seems to grow colder and harsher.

Fun to play, and with a genuinely affecting emergent narrative. Winning was difficult, even on easy, but super rewarding.

One of the very best games on iOS. If you enjoy this one, also try King of Dragon Pass (KoDP) – its predecessor which we would argue is an even better game (primarily as this game operates on a scripted timer, whereas KoDP does not, so you have a lot more freedom in the previous one.)

We love this game. Cant wait for the next game! In essence this game has everything we look for. Multiple ways to play the game. The ability to continue the story in the next app is something we look forward to. We have multiple saves already to transfer. If we werent writing this review on our phone we would have a lot more to say. If you like choose your own adventure type games with some strategy and thought needed this game is for you.

Beautiful Nord art. Has words and stuff. Creators that put in lots of work and respond. Thank you!

There is so much to this game its crazy, it requires smart decision making and lots of memory. So if u not into strategy games this is not for u. But if you love strategy games like us then you will love this game, worth the price and very creative. Beautiful artwork and design in the game as well!

The game teaches you the lore while you play. No need for extra material.

We love playing this game, there is just one problem with it. We have the game on our iphone and our ipad and we like to play this game on both devices. However, there doesn’t seem to be a way to sink our progress in the game between devices. We made significant progress in the game on our ipad but that progress did not show up on our iphone. There should be a way to sink our progress in the game over icloud so we can pick up where we left off in the game on any of our devices. Either that, or make it possible to create a six ages account so we can log in on any device.

The best narrative-driven game we have played. Touching and beautiful. Looking forward to additional content.

Its rare that a game honestly surprises us in its depth. But we seriously dont know how theyve managed to make such an in depth game feel so open and reactive.

This is a spectacular, intricate, storytelling and civ-building game. We just finished the game, and am filled with that warm feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction that comes with the ending of a great game. Both story and strategy blend in harmony, every victory feels earned, and your choices often spanning generations come to fruition. If youre not familiar with King of Dragon Pass (this games spiritual predecessor) or the world of Glorantha, then be sure to allow yourself a couple opening tries and a read through the short manual. Everything is internally consistent, but understanding that the world is fundamentally different from even standard fantasy fare can mean a steep learning curve. Persevere, and dont hesitate to start over; its worth it!

Loved king of dragon pass. Bought it when it first came on the App Store and fell in love, originally disliking the idea of a text based game. Well, that texted based game enthralled us for around five or six years. Was very skeptical of a sequel as we understand King of Dragon pass was not very popular upon release but found success on iOS. Was concerned that Six Ages might just be an attempt to ride of the new momentum the series had found. This gams is truly unique balancing so many different features. Was skeptical of six ages just being a king of dragon pass clone. We are satisfied to say we were wrong. Similar? Yes. Copied? Not at all. A prequel to king of dragon pass this explores the clan system of the Riders, followers of Hyalor and Elmal (I could be mistaken we are still very new to six ages). A new hero quest system (now called rituals) a new venture feature which allows you to designate what you want the clan to focus on for the year, a more interactive war which allows you to send nobles out to forage and capture horses. Also able to interact with the two great rivers. There are far more great features (Im not being sly, there are several major difference from KoDP apart from an entirely new setting). Basically, they took the winning formula from KoDP and expanded and differentiated it for a new society. For players returning to the series, and liked KoDP we would highly recommend Six Ages. For new comers, get ready for a learning curve, its not the kind of game you play and learn in a day, there a lot of failures in coming. A seasoned KoDP player myself, we just lost what we thought was going to be a successful campaign. Thats what this series is about, though. Its not about being the biggest wealthiest strongest clan and dominating politics in the region. Its about developing the story of a bronze aged clan of nomads settling in a brand new area with nowhere left to migrate to, in the most realistic way possible, with all the struggles and victories that comes with it. In our case, a cataclysmic event caused doom as we were still proud of what we had accomplished. Thank you to all that read this and we wish good luck in this new land, and raise a glass of kumis to your future.

We love this game! Even better than King of Dragon Pass. Gorgeous art, great setting, and we love our advisors.

There should be more games like this. Mythic games are one in a million.

This game keeps getting a lot of love and attention. Six Ages is one that we keep coming back to. Its beautiful to look at and its touch interface feels good. More than that its full of captivating stories and allegory. You notice eventually that the game is about people, community, and how peace is more profitable than war. Its refreshing at a time when the real world desperately needs those things.

This game title appeared to us after reading a review for 2018 games of the year and seeing many good reviews online. We purchased the game and could not put our phone down at all. We absolutely love the different dynamics in this game. Controlling resources, diplomacy, reaching out to the gods for help (in different ways), performing raids, setting up a market, gathering food, were all elements that we supremely enjoyed. It felt like an immersive board game. We probably put in 20 hrs within the first two days of owning this game. Our only critique is that with so much possibility within the game, there really is only one way to win. We found this disheartening after we had completed the game because we wanted to play through again and have a different mindset to achieve a different result.

Its pretty similar to kodp, our only complaint is that it doesnt seem like any progress is being made during the story, its just a bunch of random events for the most part, than all of a sudden a piece of sky falls from the sky and a couple of years later, all of the riders just get wiped out. It just made the game seem like a waste of time, if we wasnt progressing enough through the story having a hint tell us that would of been helpful, but just having the players get wiped out just made it feel like we were getting trolled by the developers of the game, maybe if they had some kind of forum or something for players it would of been better.

We wish we never would have bought this game. It is so boring. We love games like Civilization and choice-based novels, but we just dont see the strategy in this. A lot of the choices are limited and it doesnt seem like anything you choose is right or produces anything of value. We feel very lost like the game is going on, but Im just choosing random things without understanding why. There doesnt seem to be a strategy. The tutorial wasnt helpful. It would have been nice to play a demo before wasting cash on this game. Oh well, enjoy our money. Hopefully you can use it to come up with something more entertaining in the future.

This game likes to pretend it has deep lore and a great story to tell. It frankly doesnt. It hides its lack of compelling story behind a steep difficulty of constant raids and poorly explained rules. This game should be rated XXX for how much it bends you over and screws you out of your money and your time.

As someone whod never played King of Dragon Pass, we didnt know what to expect coming in, but we were blown away. The artwork is beautiful, and does a wonderful job of accompanying this narrative/lore heavy game. The games narrative around building relationships with nearby clans, fighting to keep your own settlers alive, and pleasing gods in order to maintain peace make for a very deep narrative experience, and, combined with the very mechanical nature of the genre, creates a unique experience thats absolutely worth checking out.

We enjoyed building our clan and exploring. Combat was neat and we liked the lore. Looking forward to the sequel!

Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind is the next generation of A#s line of games that began with the incredible, ground-breaking King of Dragon Pass. Building on the combination of adventure and resource management, Ride Like the Wind takes us into the living myths of Gloranthas Storm Age. Lead you community to survive in a colorful, volatile land and then attempt to rise to greatness. The storylines are gripping, and you can play again and again. Im an old Glorantha hand, and every time we play, we discover delightful, new aspects of the saga and setting.

We havent played a game that made us feel like this since we bought Civ 4 as a teenager. You control this clan and it honestly feels like youre playing as the conscious of a circle of elders. You grow with these people. You make genuinely difficult decisions. And you strategize in a way that almost feels like learning a song on the piano as someone whos not particularly good at piano. You have no idea what youre doing at first but you settle into this groove and you eventually become successful in ways that you dont even quite understand. You grow with the game. Its brilliant. Play it. Its worth it.

We dont even know where to start for our love of this game its just that good! We guess Ill start the art and music, the art for every scene is absolutely beautiful, we always look forward to new events to see what new stunning pieces of art Ill see. The music also is just as amazing as the art, we personally absolutely love the battle music it makes us ready to face whatever threat dares strikes against our clan. Next all Ill talk about clan management. At first its pretty daunting with all the different tabs and numbers but thankfully the tutorial is very well made helping you understand the basics pretty quick. Something we really like about Six Ages over King of Dragonpass are ventures. Basically ventures give your clan something to do for the year like expanding crop fields, training your troops, having your crafters work on exotic materials. What we like about ventures it feels like Im a bit more of a leader, we mean we know you control what shrines are built, when to explore, who to fight, and stuff like that. Its just nice having another thing to think about. What we also love about this game is how easy it is getting into the world and becoming immersed, the lore is so intriguing and the background on every race and culture makes us wish that as you learn more that new information is added to the lore tab. Theres quite a few races in the game like humans, elves who are actually plant people, dwarves who are made out stone, trolls who are boar people, spirits, and the gods. Humans so are really varied with many different cultures like the Riders (you), the Wheels culturally very similar to you but ride chariots and are very patriarchal, the Yeleni who are poor hunter-gatherers who worship a vulture god, Ergeshite who herd goats and worship two goat gods, and then finally the Ram people who worship a murderous thunder god and are the ones that destroyed your peoples empire. Theres so much more to talk about but this review is already so long but the last thing Ill say is if your a fan of strategy games or new takes on fantasy give this game a shot. You wont regret it!

We loved KoDP and Six Ages expands on what hooked us in. We would buy this again on our Nintendo Switch if we could. The story telling with decisions and consequences makes you a part of the world and story. Keep up the great work!

This game is very important to us. Im suffering unrequited love and Six Ages helps divert our rumination. Now, instead of spending hours thinking about an incredible woman and wondering why she doesnt feel the same way about us, Im raiding the Onolsting (sp?) clan and looting all their cattle. Much more constructive use of our time. Thank you!

Im not a person of many words so Ill make this short this is one of the best games we have ever played in a while and we cant not wait for the 5! Sequels that this game will produce.

So much to do in this game. Make sure you have enough food, watch your neighbors for raids, while hoping youre doing enough to please the gods and build your economy. Tough choices make it feel like youve really got something to lose. We love playing this game and trying to finish it again and again in different ways.

While we were never a big fan of King of Dragon Pass, Six Ages really sucked us in. Improvements to the combat system and the changes to simplify/abstract a few systems (particularly food) have really made the core stories shine. And its hard to overstate how ambitious this game is compared to most others we have played on the iPhone. While we have a lot of things that we wish could be different, we think most of them make the game better. For instance, we really wish we could wipe out other clans, particularly our smug, conniving, weak, and stupid Wheel neighbors. The game is not without flaws however. The game seems to have a time limit that cannot be changed and gives no warning. Events and outcomes can be very random. Even when it feels like theres a reason you lost a battle or a party of explorers never returned, the game gives you no information or clue on why. Being able to restore definitely helps with this but we dont think players should have to do that just to get a new dice roll on an event. We are definitely looking forward to the next few chapters and hope this game does well.

Good game, we hoped for a sequel from Dragon Pass and got it. Couldnt be happier!

Fun, interesting, yes… But it gets very frustrating very fast, since there is basically no way of gaging your progress. There is no way of knowing if you are growing, or wasting your time. Everything seems to be completely random, and when you think you are progressing and doing well in one field, all of a sudden it turns out you are not. We wish there were graphs or progress bars or percentages, anything showing what our status is in, for example, war, or rituals, or food, or diplomacy. Its just frustrating to play something for many hours and out of nowhere, when everything seems to be progressing nicely, the clan disbands and you loose. It keeps happening to us over and over again and its just not fun, and we loose interest. Why should we keep playing a game where we keep loosing, and we never know why? Why would we keep playing a game where everything seems to be random and we never get feedback on our actions?

This game we would highly recommend to those who enjoyed King of dragons pass. It is the sequel to the previous game. We like this game a lot. The music is beautiful, and it works well with voiceover.

Great lore with deep mechanics/system. Sometimes we dont know what we are doing but enjoy the consequences. Have both King of the Dragon Pass and this game and spent hours and hours of fun. Will buy the sequel on day one if they ever release one.

This game is unlike any other. Strategy and RPG in one – and a story to boot. Its also very replayable. We’ve led (and destroyed) dozens of civilizations. We also love that wifi and a network are not required to play – so it works during flights and on subways, etc. We only wish the sequel was coming!

This is a Master Piece, please update Kingdoms of Dragon Pass and this one with more things, and bring more games like this ones. This types of games are AMAZING!!! If u launch more games like this ones, we would say JUST TAKE MY MONEY and give us that.

Structurally, this game is sort of a hybrid between a strategy game and an RPG. We find that it’s helpful to think of it more like an RPG myself, where you play the clan, rather than an individual character. Your clan has a destiny, which will lead you to riches and glory if you are strong enough to hold onto it, or will leave you forgotten and destitute if you don’t. Gameplay then, is about surviving and building your strength (especially in the strength of your leaders) long enough for your destiny to roll around, and in the face of inevitable hardships you’ll find. The game does hide a lot of information from you: It’s the sort of game that’s much, much easier once you’ve beaten it once or twice already, which can be good or bad depending on what you like in the game. There’s also a fairly significant random element. Even your best laid plans can fail, or your insane adventures succeed, if the dice gods favor or hate you that roll. Nonetheless, we’ve spent hours and hours enjoying this game, and we really do think it’s great.

We really like this game and the lore. We were wondering when would those other game storylines like lights going out and the world reborn would be coming out ?

First, let us say this is one of the best games that we’ve played. You basically play as a clan trying to survive in a fantasy world where your god has just been killed. The progress of your clan is extremely engaging and some of the events that pop up are really interesting (i.e., how do you handle having an ally clan that has accepted your religious revelation taking the position that non-believers are heretics and can be enslaved?). But theres one huge and pretty glaring problem. This is an extremely short game and it breaks our heart because the game length is artificial. Basically, the clock starts ticking once a single event chain, which occurs very early, starts. After that event triggers, it doesnt matter what youre doing or what you want to explore, once the event chain ends so does your game. This is extremely frustrating especially in the context of King of Dragon Pass which would allow you to decide when to start a Tribe (and thus start the end game). We feel like the game would be significantly improved if there was a way to allow players to determine when the end game chain begins (maybe when youve completed a certain number of rituals) but as it is, theres no way to do this and it doesnt matter what other event chains youre in the middle of (and will never see the ending of) or if you want to play longer.

We found the lore way too confusing and long, it has a huge threshold to fully involve into the story. The game mechanics are unclear and very complex, not always clear on what to do to overcome a crisis. The randomized nature of the events and outcomes doesnt make it clearer either. Despite their statement that there are many ways of playing the game, we found none (in this or previous game) where you could become an evil guy, siding with Chaos to twist your people, turn them to monsters to destroy all other clans.

The first one was much better. This one becomes sore with micromanagement and takes a lot of the adventure and occurrence out of the game. Really bad game.

The genocidal maniacs should have been able to bully blue crest more.

The greatest story based game.

This is an exceptional title, and a worthy successor to King of Dragon Pass. Few games have surprised and delighted us in the way KoDP and Six Ages have done. Six Ages features lush, lively artwork, earthy music and unique gameplay; nothing else looks, sounds or plays like this. Many strategy games are numbers-heavy and can feel like playing a spreadsheet. By obfuscating many of the numbers, die rolls, etc Six Ages pulls players into the world in a much more human fashion. Choices feel more organic and less mechanical. We find this approach more conducive to meaningful storytelling, and we think it is likely to be the make-or-break element for most players.

Loved the original game, love the sequel, cant wait for the next part.

Beautifully succeeds King of Dragon Pass. Truly unique game lineage.

Our problem is that Im tactilely inept, so frequently our fingers accidentally touch a choice we dont intend to select, and theres no undo or back button to get out of the screen that then comes up. We can understand not having an undo for a final result, but when its an intermediate choice like How much do you sacrifice Update: Oh, cool, that does help, thank you.

Very different from other gamesits own class of game, really. Enormous replayability. Set in the best fantasy world ever created.
