Hear from the Players – Skat HD Reviews

Find out what gamers are saying about Skat HD:

We don’t believe the game deals the hands fairly as a couple of others have pointed out. It plays pretty well, but the computer players do make some bonehead moves as do I. It is not unusual for us to only bid and play 3 hands in a 36 deal game. While we have a higher average score than the computer opponents it is not fun waiting for the cards to turn for a few hands. We are amazed at how often we have to face highly unlikely distributions.

We love playing this game. It’s a lot of fun.

Great game works really well on the iPad. Love it. Good intelligent game moves. One of the best Skat games we ever owned and very convenient to have it on the ipad.

Ich bin Amerikaner, und ich spiele Skat gern. Dieses spiel ost viel spass!

Our husband and we just love this game. We used to play it in Germany a lot with our mother. This is a fun way to play and remember the fun times we had.

We agree with other reviewers about strange play like giving away an ace to the player when a no-point card could be played, then to play a lesser card when partner wins a trick. Happens a lot. We provided detailed hand to the developer and he must know because of these reviews, but no fix. Like some others we are frustrated by allowing only tournament scoring. The settings have options for classic and bock round, but the app won’t let you select them. We have written to the author three times, but no reply. PLEASE FIX THIS!!

This would be a good game if not for two things. 1. The human player rarely gets a playable hand. It gets boring having to pass all the time. Not enough to bid suited or grand but just enough not to bid null. The AI never has a problem and always has a lot of trump. 2. The price is a little high.

This app rates 5 stars for playability, flexibility, and precise adherence to rules – all rules but one: it cheats, without qualms, and consistently. For example, if you play "null" and hold a nine without the seven and eight of that suit, and if the app is honest, then you have a 50% chance that the seven and eight are not both in the hand of either player. If they are never in the same hand but always distributed, that is proof that the app cheats. It also cheats in other ways, it will give itself 7, 8, or even more trumps ( out of 11 ) with disproportionate frequency. Fear not – it gives you chances to get the better of it. For example, it plays "ramsch" very poorly, failing to rid itself of "losers" early in play. It makes up for that by playing "null" brilliantly, as if it could see all three hands ( it almost certainly does – meaning it cheats in that way, too). Despite these severe flaws, you can have fun playing this app. Just recognize that you are playing a weakly playing cheater – you will not be disappointed in that. Goetzkuno.

We’ve played dozens of times and am convinced that the card distribution is not random: far too many hands are what our Swabian neighbors used to call "Omas" – so easy a grandmother can win them. Very frustrating.

Super challenging, bridge busting funzenhausen! Kard game.

One of the most difficult card games has made it to the app store! Finally! It’s a great card game, and we congratulate the developer for creating a great app! Nicely done!

The game is great, but it does not do a good job in explaining the rules to a novice. If you know how to play it is great.

Great game! Nicely cusomizable with inserted pics.

Yes some weird plays but fun to play skat against the computer. Good way to learn the bid process. Obviously does not replace the fun part of playing at a pub with some friends but none the less great fun. Great app. Would be good to add online play feature.

We have played Skat for years, but once we moved to the US we have had trouble finding 2 partners, so we have to admit that the only Skat hand we get in is on our iPad. Yes, nothing is better than playing Skat in a pub drinking beer and Snaps, but this will just have to do for now so our Skat skills do not get rusty!

So far, this is, in our opinion, easily the best Skat app. The mouse theme and voices do not work for us, but that can be turned off. We do better than the AI, which, we are sorry to report, means that the AI is rather weak. Indeed, the computer’s play is sometimes simply inexplicable. That said, Skat is a great card game, and this is a fun app that was for us well worth the price.

We have been an avid Skat player ever since our youth. Now we live in Bavaria where Skat is not well known so great to have some computer buddies even if they are funny looking mice. Game skills of the mice needs to be improved here and there. Rules like "long way, short color" need to be adhered to better. Also, the mice don’t put points in ("schmieren") when it is obvious that they should. Overall, though good game. Ulrich.

The game works as promised and well for us. No regrets buying it after using it for several weeks on both our phone and iPad. Not sure if and why anybody would like the mouse theme but fortunately one can turn it off to focus on what matters. Just like others we noticed the computer makes some bad plays even if one sets the computers memory to the best setting. For us it doesn’t happen too often so we can live with it.

Gute Gestaltung, mit Spielhilfe wenn ntig. Bin kein Profi, genau der richtige Zeitvertreib auf langen Flgen, oder wenn die anderen zwei fehlen. / Nice presentation, with built-in help. Good to kill time on long flights or with no others players available.

The game is ok, but sometimes not on the right way to play it! Nobody would play out a blank 10, or not playing an ace and a 7 instead when the take is a Jack. But then the next Jack comes from the game keeper and here comes the ace! Small things and if possible to be fixed. All over ratings are good.

Having played Skat for many years, not always finding a third partner in the US, this is awesome. Yes, there are some minor glitches as commentator number 5 mentioned, but so what. Nothing is perfect and perfect is boring anyways. Ever since we installed this on our iPad, our (Chinese) girlfriend (who beats the sh… Out of us in Skat) and we play this for hours at a time on long distance flights. It is also good practice. The Saxon accent of the mice is very funny. Congratulations, we hope you folks make a lot of money with this.

It stopped working on our iPad 2 but the latest update fixed that problem.

Sometimes some strange plays. Our main complaint (as has already been stated): you need to switch the whole iPad to German to get the game in German. Also, I’d like a choice of voices. Otherwise a good option.

Skat works good ans smart and has a lot of different options. If there is no friend in your surrounding who plays Skat, this App helps you great. The omly problem: the iPad doesn’t offer beer next to the cards…

The rules/how to play (? Button) are in German! So, we have no idea how to play!! Please convert to English!

Lots of flexibility with rule variations. AI only sometimes goofs. All in all an excellent purchase for us with many hours and hours of game play.

We love playing skat and tried different computer versions. This by far is the best.

We have probably played 10,000 games on your app. It is getting very smart and very hard to beat. Congratulations- we can only imagine the AI behind it all. Our complaint is this: far too often, our hand looks very much like the previous hand. State X should be independent of state y. We realize your stats show randomness, but we have a strong sense that it aint quite so.

We enjoy playing Skat and this is the only way we can. The most aggravating moment is when our partner does not return our lead or occasionally throws a ten on the opponent’s trick. Much better than nothing.

Plays very dumb moves. When it suggests moves you will lose. Pathetic. Get a smarter program.

Perfekt fuer einen langen Flug.

Poor shuffle, many logical mistakes.

This game plays great and has plenty of options for the many scoring and game variations you may be accustomed to. We have played thousands of games already. We wish it had an online multi-player capability.

Being German in the US, we have a hard time finding people to play with. This app is just hard to beat. Even the basic bar background is just as at home. Thanks for bringing a feeling of home to our iPad.

A woderful game, which we missed for many years. That the reizen kann be done in german makes it even more exciting. Wish that an impossible null could be checkt . John Becker.

We have played Skat for more than 70 years, on and off, first in Germany and later, as the occasion presented itself, in the US. So we are a very soft competitor, nothing compared to our grandfather who practically made it a career to play every weekend. This implementation of the game is quite enjoyable. It falls a bit short of the version produced by Uwe Rasche for the Macintosh. Our main complaint would be the poor verbalization quality of the few standard phrases. Whatever dialect was chosen, it isn’t what we would prefer. So we turn off the sound. By comparison, the audio in Rasche’s Skat feels like playing with an AI (artificial intelligence). Bottom line: if you know Skat already, it is well worth the small investment for your iPad.. We can’t tell how it would be as a learning tool.

Excellent game! We play SKAT twice a month with a SKAT Klub in Fredericksburg, Texas, many of whom have played here for 40+ years. Several of them play regularly in the Texas SKAT tournaments. We all speak Texas German. The game helps us try riskier bids and plays. But… We miss the two mice and would like the option to have them back playing with us.

This is an excellent Skat game and better than the nearest competitor we found (ProSkat). There are a couple of things we would like to see in any updates: the single player can give "Kontra", but the game would be even more interesting if the computer mice players also could declare Kontra, or "Re" if the program calculated your Kontra is likely to fail. (Uwe Rasche’s good PC/Mac Skat games have this capability.) we also wish the mice had slightly more different voices, as we occasionally have trouble keeping straight whether it’s "Jerry" or "Speedy" doing the bidding. And if you’re not extremely careful to note which mouse is forehand or backhand or dealing, you might find yourself passing on a game where you get stuck playing a "Ramschrunde" that you’ll lose. It’s also too bad that in order to make the game totally be played in German, you must change your entire iPad language setting to German. We wish you could just toggle the game to German, independently of the overall language setting. And the mice don’t always play their strongest card, sometimes hanging on to a trump card (especially in a Grand match) that really ought to be played earlier. But these points are minor in the grand scheme of things; the game plays quite realistically and is in our opinion "sehr unterhaltsam" — very entertaining. Joe Ritchie p.s. – we see our iPad saved our old review. We came back because the latest update seems to have made a substantial change, which we do NOT like at all. All of a sudden all the games are scored with "tournament scoring," and when we attempt to switch it back to "classic," we cannot. Das ist furchtbar frustrierend! (I wrote the above over a year ago. Here’s a totally new post — not exactly a review, but a couple of pertinent comments we were unable to send via the website: we really enjoy the game (hervorragend!), and we like some of the new features, like the ability to add photos instead of the dumb mice (cute at first, but after awhile, boring!). We made one of our regular Spielpartner a photo of our Thai girlfriend, so the basso profundo voice is quite weird. Is there any way in future versions to add a variety of voice options, including female? Also, though the players usually are clever and strong, but one weakness still persists: when you are playing against the single player (d.h. Der Spieler, der am hchsten gereizt hat), often when he (or she) plays a lower trump (z.B. Herz- oder Karo-Bube), the other player doesn’t seem to get it that you are likely to take the trick and does not play a high-value card in his hand, like an ace, 10 or at least a king (schmieren!)…. Hope you guys can work on that. Still, we’ve had many great Skatrunden with this game.

This game is worth the money if you like to play Skat. However, there are still many bugs that need to be corrected. The game keeps crashing, especially before you’ve had a chance to look at the score and ask for a review. Also, the English translation is poor. "Plenty points" for "ein fetter Stich" is incomprehensible. "A lot of points" might be at least correct, but even that is awkward. We would also appreciate the option of playing not only 3 bock rounds, but also 3 Ramsch rounds. The only Ramsch possible so far is if no one bids. Still, even though this game needs updating, we’re still enjoying playing it.

AI players make odd moves, i.e. Not trumping a 10 but a queen on the next move. It would be nice if AI engage in Kontra and Re. Overall ok.

Absolutely NOT! The guys in the picture are annoying and take away from concentrating on the game. Secondly NULL is fixed! Otherwise we love your game!

We finally found the perfect Skat game for the iPod. Well, almost perfect. A few small changes would make Skat for iPad a 5 star card game. We are not going to try to get into the rules for Skat as it is a rather complicated trick taking card game with many rules variations. One of the things we would appreciate seeing in the game is an explanation of the rules being used. There is an option to change some of the rules, but as far as we can tell the base rules aren’t described anywhere. This is fine for people already intimately familiar with Skat, but not as good for those of us who could use a little reminder. One of the things that you will notice after a few hands is that the adorable AI mice will start speaking to you in German. We actually like this, since most of the German is translated into English in little text bubbles. However, a few times it says things which aren’t translated (sometimes when we lead an Ace on the first trick, for example) and we would appreciate having everything translated. Additionally elements of the scorecard are left untranslated and there is no option to use a standard US deck with Q and J instead of D and B. We got used to it, but the option would be nice and we think it would help non-German players, although we realize this is probably not most if the publisher’s target audience. Gameplay, AI, and the audiovisual effects are great. The only glitch we have found is that when the AI players are bidding against each other, the spoken words lag way behind the on screen text bubbles. Not a big deal, but detracts from the otherwise polished feel of the game. If you like Skat, there aren’t many choices out there. Luckily, Skat for iPad is a winner. With a few minor fixes, it will be a champion.
