What Makes Space Out Stand Out

"Very cool 8^) – Fun old style arcade for us old arcade fans!" – Drewx67

"Great game – Awesome." – Goodluck74

"Nice retro watch game – Still loving this app. Fun to play on the watch while waiting in line or out and about. Quick hit gaming with fun retro feel. They keep on updating app too to make sure it works on OS updates. Thanks! Great retro game for the watch. It's like space invaders & block out combined! Works really well on the Apple watch. Uses new API's from watchOS 3. Nice scrolling with the crown and even uses the watch speaker for the great retro sounds. Love it! Next gen of watch games is here!" – peteostro

"Excellent– an iOS Classic! – I bought this game when the first version came out on iOS 2. It's been nearly 10 years and I still play it! I am so glad the developer keeps it updated. My favorite thing about it is the Commodore 64 SID sound effects and the speech synthesis– this game would not look out of place in an early 80s arcade. The watchOS version plays very well on top of that! The Digital Crown makes moving the paddle a dream. Would definitely recommend this app to any retro game fan." – cyelvington

"Gamers … will likely find Space Invaders to be overly simplistic and outdone by most of its clones in the App Store such as Space Out." – http://toucharcade.com

"I took a look at about 40 [games], I decided which ones lived up to the hype and which ones didn’t. One of my favorites was the game called Space Out." – Jamin Brophy-Warren, Wall Street Journal Online

"Arkanoid + Space Invaders with the gorf voice thrown in for good measure! Sold." – GreatLakesDrifta

Space Out is the original mashup, a tribute to old school arcade games; it truly delivers that early arcade feel. It combines 2 classic game concepts, shooting invaders and brick breaking, into a unique and exciting retro experience. It's a blast back to the late '70s. Complete with all new 8-bit sound effects created with a MOS 6581 SID chip from the Commodore 64 and speech generated with 8kHz 8-bit allophones. (Any control issues were fixed years ago.)

This Casual game offers engaging gameplay and regular updates for mobile players.

Community Insight:

On iPhone its too easy and goes on too long, but on Apple Watch using the Digital Crown as a rotary controller this game is a blast! Challenging but not crazy hard and runs just the right length of time. Fun mashup of breakout and Space Invaders. We wish it kept a high score list and not just the highest score. Would be nice too if it had daily/weekly/all-time online high score lists too, with iPhone and Watch lists separate. But this is fun on Watch. Might even be our favorite Watch game.

Fun old style arcade for us old arcade fans.

Have played this game for years. Still love it. However with the iPhone X if you pause the game then come back to the game the game plays 2x faster. Very hard to play. Not sure if its the iPhone X or the IOS 11.2.6 Paul.

Was a favorite game for a long time, but sadly, unplayable on iPhone X. Hope for an update, but until then only worth one star or less.

This game is officially an iOS Classic! We've been playing on every iPhone since 2008 and it's still a blast of retro fun. Check it out.

Must have for lovers of old school retro gameplay. Watch version is a cool bonus.

Space Out is the greatest fusion retro inspired game we ever played. It's like ATARIs 1976 game: Breakout & TAITO CORPs 1978 game: Space Invaders, all rolled into one. Take a trip back through time to the Late 1970s-Early 1980s with this wonderful masterpiece of a game. If we are able to play with this, anybody can.

Not sure what that 1 star guy is so stirred up over. Simple and fun. Exactly as described! Thanks for a great throwback.

This is a GREAT game. Derivative, yet creative. A perfect mashup between Space Invaders and Breakout. However it REALLY needs to be updated to use iPhone 5's wide screen.

This is the best version of Space Invaders we've ever played, and one of the best brick breakers we've ever played too. The combo works so amazingly well together, we almost forget we're playing a new game, it's like it was always meant to be this way and now finally is. With the latest update it's now universal too, hello iPad.

We've loved the game since it first came out. Now that the upgrade bug has been fixed, we can enjoy it once more! It's a perfect blend of Space Invaders and brick breaker-type games. It offers very smooth game play and its retro look makes it an instant classic (or at least look and feel like one). It's a perfect iPhone game for passing the time without needing to get too involved. Highly recommended.

Waste of money seriously!! If a no star rate was possible that would be our choice.

This is definitely a cool game. Great attention to detail. Sound effects top notch. We have discovered the "freezing paddle" issue as some others have mentioned here. We hope that this is resolved with the next update and then we'll go to 5 stars.

Does anyone know the cheat that let the balls bounce off the bottom? We forgot it.

Love the pixel graphics and theme.

For true old school gamers… The developers of this game GET IT and deliver the classic look and feel you're after, with a clever twist. Very polished, tons of fun, right on the money. A+! The best old school game experience you'll find on the iPhone and for only a buck.

Love it. The detail and even the voice is just like the old style game. Keeping this on the Touch and we're particular. The missles seem to sneak up on us and gets to be challenging. But just love it mainly for the retro look but it does play well too. We'd recommend getting this one especially if any remember back in the days of the first arcade shooter games.

It's really fun, just two suggestions: 1. Make possible to pause the game once you are not touching the screen, exactly like "Superball 2" app game, (it's very useful when you need to stop playing immediately without the risk to lose a life). 2. Please describe inside the game every power up that falls from above. Thanks.

Love it. The style is before our time, but as many know: retro is the new cool! It seems authentic, having never played the original.. We disagree with a previous review illustrating the "Catch 22" situations that occur. And we almost didn't buy it because of that. After playing for a while, we've come to feel that it's just "the way it is" – it didn't even annoy us once. It's probably how the original game managed to eat up all of your quarters, lol. Thankfully, replays are free here.

Totally enjoying this game!!! Our kids are ready to send us to "Space Out Anonymous"! Best game we've gotten. No complaints about anything about theapp itself. Way too much fun.

This is a great game. So addictive! We play it during random pauses in our day and it just never gets old. The price is great, and as to the paddle-finger-freeze problem, this has only happened once or twice and has not really affected our game play. Also… We currently have two top scores! Yay.

Very tricky to play, awesome price for something so challenging.

Very well done game. From the graphics to the sound to the gameplay, would highly recommend this one. Should be a top seller in the app store.

The mix of these two classics is great, breakout that fights back. Another hit from Dan at Binary.

This game is Possibley the most addicting game they offer. We've played all the games.. Even the helicopter game with the sick graphics and how it uses the sensors in the phone. This game by far out does it.. It's more challenging, long, and the little voice is pretty funny.. But we recomend this to everyone to buy this game greatest on the market.

Great game! Made us feel a littlebit like we were on the old 2600.

Binary Squares has introduced our favorite games so far and space out is our second favorite app behind their block game. We have monkey ball, de blob, and some other games that many people love but this game is defiently a better game with great controling. And is set at a great price.

ITS so Retro 80's////we love it.

Spaceout is so much fun! Best iPhone game to date. More fun then Crash and Super Monkey Ball.

Love the voice effects, very retro and cool – as is the whole game style. Yes, it's simplistic hit the ball, kill the aliens, avoid the bombs play – but it was good enough in the 80's and it's still great mindless entertainment today.

Love the graphics, sound, and interface. Lots of fun.

This game is a cross between "Space Invaders" and "Pong." It feels like the classic games and is more challenging than we would have expected. We only wish there were a volume control, but the sound effects are terrific, reminding us of "Star Wars" gun fights. Simple, old-school graphics and lots of fun.

We think there should be settings for shooting on/off.

Remarkably simply & cute combination that turns out to work well. The controls and graphics are appealing. The only minor knock on this game is that it doesn't use the unique features of the iphone. We'd enjoy this exact game on our pc. That being said, however, the implementation of a paddle using the touch screen is remarkably successful. (we'd only suggest that you not have to "grab" the paddle, perhaps it could jump or move to where you touch.).

…The developer has replied to our inquiry about this, and we are updating the review as such. He is trying to replicate the issue … This would be our favorite game and would have five stars. Awesome sound effects, graphics, and concept. Gameplay is good too, but as two others have mentioned, there is a flaw in the control. The paddle will sometimes freeze for up to a couple seconds. So far, the developer's suggestion is to make sure your finger stays below the paddle. After trying this for awhile, it does seem to reduce the occurrence of the issue, but it does still happen occasionally, and we're not yet sure whether it's due to our consciously careful finger placement, or just that it's working better randomly at this particular time. See a game like "Break Classic" by BootAnt for the same control that works flawlessly. That said, we DO still wholeheartedly recommend this game. The flaw isn't so bad that it's not worth the price. It's just a minor annoyance sometimes (and apparently only for some people). Also, could use a volume control… Sounds are a bit loud. And after fixing the touch control, eventually adding tilt control (like on Jirbo Break) might be interesting.

Sometimes the paddle gets stuck and doesn't move – please work on that bug.

Fun retro game – especially like the high scores – love how Dan is the one to beat. Kitschy and fun – well worth 4 bucks.

Great game….. But a little hard but if u like a challenging game then buy it.

Fun game, but difficulty takes some time to ramp up and thus gets a bit repetitive. But overall lots of fun.

High score games need open feint.

Kept on freezing and crashing then caused our email to freeze and crash too. Deleted app tried to reinstall and it didn't reinstall. Seemed fun but never got to use it.

Really fun, but everytime we finish the first level it continues gameplay but with no new ships, yet there is still weapon fire.

Looks and sounds great but too hard to control. You're moving your blocker with your finger by touch screen and your finger gets in the way of incoming missiles. You can't see what's going on. We expected space invaders as well…not pong. We stopped playing after a few times and deleted it. We didn't want to but it was more annoying than fun.

We deleted ours. Just too complicated to try to figure out the controls. Oh well.

It is a hard thing to downgrade a wonderful idea and well written app. The philosophy of the game and smooth control, great graphics and physics are unmatched. We have played for hours on this, and find ourselves entirely frustrated at the "Catch 22" results that occur. Either we avoid a bomb which requires that we let the ball go and thereby lose a player, or return the ball and bet hit by a bomb and loose a player. As the physics are random, this is bound to occur. It would be nice to have settings to increase the number of plays or decrease how many hits it takes to kill the player. We is very hard to make such comments on such a great game, but the whole idea is that it should be selectively challenging but doable for all who play this.

Superpong Is 20 times better we bought both this is ok not the best.
