Spades is a trick-taking card game devised in the United States in the 1930s. It can be played as either a partnership or solo/"cutthroat" game. The object is to take at least the number of tricks (also known as "books") that were bid before play of the hand began. Spades are always trump. Other suits have no intrinsic value during play, but a card of the suit led in the current trick will beat a card of any other suit except a Spade. Rank of suit: Highest to lowest: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

Bidding:
Each player bids the number of tricks he expects to take. The player to the left of the dealer starts the bidding and bidding continues in a clockwise direction, ending with the dealer. As Spades are always trump, no trump suit is named during bidding as with some other variants. A bid of "zero" is called "nil"; the player must bid at least one if you don’t want to bid "nil”.
In partnership Spades, the standard rule is that the bids by each member of the partnership are added together.

Blind and Nil Bidding:
Two very common variants of bidding are for a player or partnership to bid "blind", without having looked at their cards, or to bid "nil", stating that they will not take a single trick during play of the hand. These bids give the partnership a bonus if the player exactly meets their bid, but penalizes them if the players takes more or fewer.

Scoring:
Once a hand is completed, the players count the number of tricks they took and, in the case of partnerships or teams, the members’ trick counts are summed to form a team count. Each player’s or team’s trick count is then compared to their contract. If the player or team made at least the number of tricks bid, 10 points for each bid trick are awarded (a bid of 5 would earn 50 points if made). If a team did not make their contract, they were "set", 10 points for each bid trick are deducted from the team’s score (e.g.: six bid and any number less than six taken results in minus 60 points).
If a player/team took more tricks than they bid, a single point is scored for each overt rick, called an "overt rick", "bag" or "sandbag" (a bid of 5 tricks with 6 tricks taken results in a score of 51 points).

User Reviews on Spades – Card Game

Looking for more information? Read a comprehensive review of Spades – Card Game below:

We enjoy spades but we are not the greatest player. Thanks for having a hint for the bidding. We are never sure what to bid unless our hand is really good. The hint helps us a lot.

We think this Spade game as well as others out are pretty accurately programmed. We prefer to play solo. We disagree that playing with partner was as one comment we read but we believe that bug has been corrected. Coupled/partners are played correctly. Some hands are boring cuz of hands dealt. Appreciate the lack of forced to watch demo of other games at every hand or game play. Specially if one owns another game version but forced to take a 30 second break to watch a demo play. Most games have a life cycle before it stays interesting. Tedious repetitiveness is very boring.

Great card game really can relax and enjoy this game.

Your game is good but our partner doesnt think he just takes the card at that moment he will play a king on the ace then next deal the other guy plays a jack of same suit which he could of won but instead he played a 10 ???? Not logical. Our own man was trying to stop our Nil. Thats stupid.

We love that the bot partner knows not to cut your hand. Only wish it would know to play high when you choose nil. Otherwise great game!

This is the best practice for singles play. On the other hand the way the app is set up to play partners needs much improvement!

We dont like ads between hands. We wish the cards were numbered larger. Not fond of portrait vs landscape.

Scoring is bizarre. Also, we opted to play the blind nil. As a result the change was In asked if we bid blind nil before anybody else bids. Every time, bidding doesnt follow a pattern of one player after another, but only because we have to choose blind nil or not first.

The team score should be counted as one score. If one player dont make their bid, then the team is set. The players cant play a Nill bid.

Game is good and few commercials if any. But would be nice to have live players.

Love the game but despise the adds after each hand. Also, dont like the fact that when you go nil your partner usually messes you up. And a lot of the time the computer gives the bag to the wrong team.

Love the game but the issue we have is when we really have a nil bid the other players literally allow us to get a book just to set us!! And if we would have went the one or two j would have been set! This game cheats honestly! But we cant seem to find a better online spades option!!

If you allow high /low jokers then the duece of spade should fall after the Ace of spades. That give you three top spades. This game only has jokers wild. Not as risky.

Never seen scoring like this. Scoring is supposed to be as a team.

We have never played spades and got 100 point subtracted for going over bid.

We have never seen scoring like this. Really different.

This game cheats. Skips counting all cards and causes player to lose!

This game plays well for a while then starts making dumb plays Nils plays to suit that cause a set several times. Not necessary could be a better game.

We love playing spades but tonight is the only time we played with 2 different 2 of Diamonds. We had one myself and one of the opponents had one. It is a freebie and we are thankful for that.

Computer gets best cards too often.

Its everyone for themselves it seems.

Once again set other team we won last bag, but computer gave to wrong team. Happens a lot need to fix problem.

This couldnt be anymore boring if we sat in a hole! Bots are nothing to get excited about! Very Typical, nothing unique about this version.

Why is it that the game will not throw cards away when all bids for team is already met? Also we will never understand how our partner will bid 1 when it has the Ace & King of Spades in hand! Im still searching for a fair and competitive Spades game. Really tired of all the over bids.

Suit distribution all messed up and partner seems to be too stupid to know that they are ON YOUR SIDE.

What kind of game this is supposed to be, where your partner plays with the opponents side? Just as most other spades games bots programmed to beat you no matter what! Stinks! Uninstalled!

They lied. You cannot play solo. No setting for fir so on the first hand our dumb partner we didnt know we had, had 5 bags. Goodbye.

When we go over our bid we get penalized but when the game does the same thing nothing happens to it s bid. Very disappointed.

Computers actually know how to play!

We enjoy playing with a bot that doesnt make stupid moves – it makes us feel like Im playing with a real player. We also like the fact that we dont have to sir thru 30-45 seconds id ads.

We have played numerous Spades games. Out of all, we find this one to be THE BEST!!!! We would rate it an A+++. When played on an iPad the card size is Quite Ample. Do not hesitate to try. We really like this app. Would you consider a recall button for a misplayed card, even with a -1 point penalty? Also would you please consider altering the automated players from trying to draw down others Spades? We have never played a game where this tactic has been used. We SO LOVE YOUR GAME! IT IS TERRIFIC!!!

Game locked up and will not resume.

The game is average at best, being dealt continuously low Hands and if you go Nill your partner will stitch you up every chance they get.

Game play is too slow can not speed it up.

Way too many noisey games advertised for kids that play load annoying junk even if you have sound muted you have to mute your phone. And the stupid things repeat over and over. We would never want or be interested in the garbage that they advertise and some of them are so hard to get rid of and interfere in your game too.

Card size to small, allows for hitting the wrong card. Enjoying the gameplay. Thank you.

We have only one complaint … Theres too much commercials.

Too much commercial. Happy with logic also scoring. Please reduce advertisements.

Nothing wrong with this game. Its the real players on those other reviews that dont make sense. Nice game.

Dont understand the bag scoring and dont like it. Want to see the bids of each player on every hand.

The game is fine, but the Commercials are offensive. Showing people in bed & cheating on a girlfriend, then asked how the character should respond (slap, etc). What a horrible premise for a game.

Like the game but the scoring is awful and the hands that you at let dealt. Unable to bid anything higher than a 3.

We think if on player from the team doesn’t get their bid they should get negative for the entire bid, we’ve never seen it scored like this. Also, we appreciate the new resume feature but it’s not working for us.

This game is really good. We just have one complaint. It would be nice to be able to pick our own cards instead of the game telling us which card to play.
