Dive into Stagehand: A Reverse Platformer

"Yawn, a platformer." Oh yeah? Take that yawn back. Stagehand might look like your typical run-and-jumper, but it plays nothing like one. In Stagehand, you don’t control the character, you control… THE STAGE.

Your job is to quickly and strategically position all the platforms on the level before our hero Frank (last seen in The Incident) runs headfirst into a cliff, or feet-first into lava. Stagehand is fast, hilarious, and fun. You’re going to have a fantastic time with it.

What’s in the box:

  • Next-gen pixel graphics.
  • 4 unique characters.
  • Another earworm of a soundtrack.
  • Haptic feedback for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
  • Instant respawn for endless score-chasing.
  • Share an animated GIF of Frank’s final moments!
  • The offical Stagehand-iMessage-Sticker-Pack is included with every copy.

Stagehand is everyone’s favorite new flavor of the summer. Grab a spoon and dig in!

Find out what gamers are saying about Stagehand: A Reverse Platformer:

We’ve played every game from the developers of this game, and this one may be our favorite one yet. A novel concept wherein you move around the various platforms in the game to give your character safe passage, instead of directly manipulating your character. It’s perfect for quick sessions while in line or yeah, in the bathroom. The soundtrack is great as always, and we really appreciate the little touches that add even more polish to this treat of a game, such as the haptic feedback, and the retro yet clean interface. We particularly enjoy the clock and battery meter in the pause menu. Ok we have to finish this and go play some more. It’ll be nice to see if there are updates coming, maybe more music, or maybe even power-ups. However we do love it as it’s currently presented.

This is a great game with a new and interesting mechanic. But to be completely clear, this game is not a platformer. There are no levels to complete. It is a proceedurally generated endless runner.

Stagehand is the best endless runner, and the best platformer we’ve played on iOS. On top of being a beautiful game with great sound design, it has incredibly smart mechanics. Gameplay is simple enough to be understandable, and complex enough to feel rich and interesting through every run.

Game play is superb, music and retro graphics, wow. When they put this baby together the were really thinking outside the box. Not to easy a game but fair. A game that will keep you coming back for more. Good stuff.

We don’t usually become addicted to games almost immediately. This was not the case with Stagehand. The controls are intuitive, the art is beautiful, the music is great. We will recommend this game to everyone we know for the foreseeable future.

Just when you thought it all had been done before, these geniuses make a challenging platformer that flips the whole concept on its head. In this game you play a god-like entity with the power to move mountains, tormenting a Sisyphean character who has no choice but to pursue the human rat race that we all know so well. Stagehand raises philosophical questions about free will and the notion of "self" that cannot be summarized in this brief review but certainly make you question the nature of reality itself. Great music too.

A unique take on the endless platform runner. Styling and music are top notch!

This is a genuinely great game! The mechanics are intuitive and the game is challenging without being frustrating. The cherry on top is the spunky and joyful soundtrack that puts a grin on our face. We are in love! Thank you!

This game has no flaws. It is wholly entertaining and increasingly challenging. Perfect!

This is a great game, we feel like we got a steal at 1.99.

Stagehand is a delight. It’s truly a blast. Fun and surprising. The gifs when you die are super cute. The art is awesome, icon is gorgeous, music is addictive, and the characters are adorable. Love it.

The gameplay, the music, hell, even the app icon. Just everything is pitch-perfect. Get this app.

We’re infuriatingly bad at this game, but it’s well designed and the music is fantastic. Even if you only play it once, the music and the message stickers are totally worth $2.

Stagehand is a gosh darn delight. Can’t say enough great things about the pixel art and the music. Then you get into the gameplay, and you realize that’s just as thoughtful. At first you struggle to move the platforms around to keep Frank alive, but soon enough, you can feel yourself learning how to quickly react to the stage as it comes at you, and eventually the game becomes a relaxing, zenlike experience. Once you reach that point, this game is perfect to play while listening to an audiobook or podcast. Highly recommended.

Perfect timing since we just finished collecting all the coins in Mario Run, this addicting little gem can slide right in and fill our time waiting to pick up kids at activities. Oh, and be sure to turn on the sound so you hear the awesome 8-bit-inspired soundtrack. Well done!

Best fun we think we have ever had in a game from the App Store!

Not only is this a super fun game with a real challenge, but it’s also just a great app in general. Small things, like how the game music stops playing when you’re listening to your own music or podcasts (but sound effects still continue), show that the team really put a lot of thought into how players would be playing the game and how to make the experience great. Also, the gif sharing feature is really fun and cool. It’s a really good game.

We love this game! Great job you guys! And thank you!

This game takes a simple concept a platformer, but you play as the stage! But it is completely transformative. The game is unlike anything to come before it, and is the best iOS game in a long time. Thanks for such a wonderful game, with beautiful graphics and fun music!

Really fun game with an amazing soundtrack!

This is a perfect game for the iPhone. Challenging, well designed, fun as all get out. We love it. Theme song is amazing too.

This is what Mario Run should have been – fun, cute, clever, and extremely easy to understand while also being a challenging game. Absolutely worth your time.

A familiar premise turned on it’s head by a simple mechanism, executed to perfection. Devilishly hard, but addictive as hell. Gorgeous artwork painted with exceptional attention to detail, and a theme that’ll be bouncing around inside your head for weeks. We’re hooked!

This game is a super clever take on the Mario genre and quite fun. We may be getting old though, but like Flappy Birds, we can’t seem to get very far without dying a horrible death. Maybe an easy-mode to get a bit accustomed to the mechanics before throwing us off the deep end? If you haven’t seen it though, check out the making of the song at cabel. Us!

First, this game is fun to play. That’s what matters most. But, also, this is a new way to play, and makes you rethink how to play, and that also matters a lot. It’s absurd you can get that for $2.

Stagehand brilliantly reimagining the classic jump-and-run platformer for a touch interface in a way that subverts the entire genre. Frankly, it’s amazing nobody came up with it first. This is the game Mario Run should’ve been, a game that deeply understands its platform. Be warned: Stagehand is hard, but never unfair. If you fail, it’s because you messed up. Which means you can FEEL yourself get better and better as you play, unlocking new characters and going deeper into the world. Oh, and we love the music so much, we find myself singing it around the house.

Stagehand is a lot of fun. The soundtrack is catchy, the SFX bright, and the concept is charming. With a level structure reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 3, character design similar to Braid, and shareable replays of accidental smashing, it’s easy to lose track of time while playing. Matt, Neven, and Cabel have another hit. Thanks, guys!

This game is genuinely enjoyable.

Stagehand is incredibly charming. It is, as it says, a reverse platformer but we see it as an endless runner. And yes, we guess you could lump this in with something like Flappy Bird or its ilk, we guess? But the beauty of Stagehand is the small touches that make it great. The music and graphics are a delight, and there’s both a humor and homage in the game that really sets it apart. It reminds us of games from the early 80s that felt like humans made them, and not algorithms. At first we were a little discouraged with the game, as we felt the pace was too fast. But we stuck with it, and we’re glad we did. Such joy and happiness for two bucks.

Fun game with a really clever concept.

Would be 5 stars if it supported our iPhone X. IPad 11 would be cool too.

Guys, give us some difficulty options or gradually ease us into the game. As it stands, the game is so hard, it often feels unfair. To new players, I’d suggest watching out for coins, rather than for upcoming dips and rises in the landscape. The coins give you a hint as to what’s coming next will help boost the score you receive when you inevitably die.

Good idea, not a very good game though, no upgrades, only 4 characters, and you can only control the floor.

This game looks great and the soundtrack is really good. We can’t stick with it for more than 2-3 minutes at most, however. It’s an interesting concept, moving the world around, but if you miss by a few seconds it’s game over almost immediately. There’s really no incentive to keep going unless you wanna beat your last high score. We hope the developers come out with more games that have that nostalgic look cuz they really do have an eye for it.

We like the idea. It’s difficult. So after a couple minutes you realize it’s like temple run or flappy birds. You do the same thing over and over again hoping to just make it a few more feet.

There are a lot of things on the App Store you can get for $2. This game just doesn’t have the depth to compete. In fact, there are many endless runners out there with more depth. The concept is great, but very little has been done with it. You move platforms up and down and try to beat your high score. That is it. We’re not underselling, that is the only game mechanic.

We think the idea is very cool and original but with only four skins it gets boring and old very fast waste of money.

Overall this a pretty fun game with some of the usual downsides of touch-based games. The game can feel a bit repetitive, but this is alleviated somewhat by the randomly generated levels. And it looks like once you reach a certain score, you begin to unlock some other characters. The controls are a bit awkward. We never feel like we’re in great control of what’s going on. We don’t think this is fully the fault of the game. Part of it is just the reality of playing a game on a touch screen. This game can become pretty fast paced and require some quick and precise inputs to get past certain parts, and our dumb imprecise fingers on a relatively small screen can make this a challenge – and not a fun one. We’ve found our right pointer finger to be easiest to use, and of course then we’re covering the right half of the screen with our hand as we play, limiting how far ahead we can see the terrain that’s coming. Again, just a reality of touchscreen games. We would say the game has at least one problem of occasionally throwing walls at you that seemingly go down too far for you to get under, leading to an instant game over. The game is tough enough without that, so running into them can be pretty discouraging. It isn’t clear if this is a bug, or if you actually can pull the ground down far enough, but the small lip of our phone case prevents us from micro-managing the very edge of our phone screen. Hopefully the controls and levels are tweaked in future updates to prevent things like this.

It’s a good baseline idea for something new and different, but it’s extremely boring as is. After several updates where they add changing scenery, things to buy with the coins you get, power ups maybe? Then it’ll be a powerhouse app that we think will become super popular, but right now it’s not in a good enough stage to be worth even $0.99.

Graphics and sound are great, concept is interesting but seems a bit unfinished. The levels are randomised and makes for sloppy gameplay. Hopefully they can take this idea and improve on it soon though.

We didn’t realize this was randomly generated. Played for a few minutes… Gets… Very… Boring. Fast. Any items? Anything? No? Boring!

Stay away Absolutely, no. None contact. All Chinese. No use for this game. At all. No update. No contact. No controller use Stay away. Should never have purchased this game Loss.

This game is just like a mini game and yet it costs $2, not worth it. Its not in stages.

It seems like there is just one mode. Very frustrating because it’s hard to get the hang of it. We’re really sorry we spent the money. Please make a slow mode!

Sounds like a fun concept on paper, but it’s not. You’ll constantly fail for reasons beyond your control, thanks to the randomized levels. You’ll run into walls and holes far too often, because you simply can’t react quickly enough, or your character won’t jump. Felt completely repetative within 5 minutes.

We played for about 3 minutes before deleting the game. We thought it was going to be a platform type game but instead its flappy bird with a twist. So after dying, you completely restart. So no real end game and no point to spend money on it.

Eh with the app screen we thought it was going to be nice but…. No. 8 bit pixel or whatever It’s not an platformer but an endless runner Also it’s to fast with lots of glitches we DEMAND MY MONEY BACK.

We saw this game and we thought it looked kind of cool. So we gave it a whirl and absolutely hated it. It was fun at first, but then we noticed it was an infinite runner and there was no way of getting something new except getting a near impossible score. We think all these five stars reviews are by hidden devs or whackos.
