STEINS;GATE EN (ENGLISH) Reviews

Coming from the anime we thought this series couldn’t get any more amazing well we were wrong the visual novel does more for the characters and story trust us this will be a wild ride that by the end you will be satisfied enjoy.

The contact and email lists on the in-game phone look blank. You can blindly tap around to find them, but that makes the game hard if not impossible to play. At least on a XS Max.

Is it possible to obtain the ipad version without repaying? Recently got an ipad and hadnt yet had the chance to play this vn after purchasing.

Sure the iOS version has some trivial bugs but besides that its perfect! The game itself has the best story of any form of entertainment we’ve seen, able to bring someone with a stone heart like us to tears. If you have the money, dont hesitate to buy!!!

We have really been enjoying this game, however, once the iOS 13 update happened you can no longer use the menu. It kinda breaks the game and makes it so you cant save or check anything. We would give it 5 stars all the way but unfortunately it is unplayable now :/

Whole heartedly can say, this game deserves its rating.

Really enjoyed the story and ended up truly connected to the characters. The amazing characterization has you deeply hating the "bad guys" and actually caring for the well being of the "good guys". The pacing was absolutely splendid in our opinion and was very well done. Definitely recommend!! Little pricey but will engage you for dozens of hours and will leave you begging for more!!

Make no mistake; youre paying for a whole game here and getting your moneys worth. The game is a visual novel, so interaction or gameplay is fairly minimal – what youre coming for is the story, and it is fantastic. You play as Okabe, a chunnibyou nutcase mad scientist wannabe in downtown Akibahara. Throughout the story, youll meet many characters and friends who offer interesting and compelling stories. Some of them are fairly trope-ish, but Okabe tends to disrupt those cliches fairly well, and any major predictions you have about the story will be slightly subverted. The game also has a unique, realistic tone that plays very well. Phone interactions, your primary source of character routes, are a fun way to get you involved with the game. Theres also an extensive tips section that acts as a glossary, achievements and a music gallery. The game is fairly long (30+ hours) so youll get a lot from your purchase. Its also fully voice-acted, but sadly only in Japanese. The voice acting adds a lot, but dual voice would be great in the future. The characters designs fit great into the theme – the shading on all of the characters is done in a style reminiscent of space or glial cell mapping. The game also has a few CGs where you get to see he action closer. These arent as common as Id like them to be, but its always a treat when they pop up. A fairly important feature that this game has (that some mobile games dont, for some reason) is a suspend feature. Interrupt your game and when you next open it, itll pick up right where you left off. Similarly, the game auto saves about every 10 seconds, so even manual reloading is easy. The translation is amazing. All the references, terms and jokes are translated into thier English equivalents. Things that wouldnt make sense if they were direct translations (like memes in Japan we dont have here) have been smoothed out. The game reads so well, youd think it was written for an English audience. EDIT: Im playing through the sequel, Steins;Gate 0 right now, and Im sorely missing the humor of the translation that this version has. Even over the other localizations of this game on Xbox or PC, this version of the translation is hilarious and insightful, accurately recreating net slang from 2010 (when the game is set). This is definitely the definitive version of this game. There are a few minor gripes. Sometimes, the music will glitch and start playing the soundtrack twice, at two different points in the song, at the same time. Opening the menu can sometimes fix this, but other times the music will cut out entirely, and youll have to save and reload to fix it. Luckily, this is super fast and easy. Secondly, the double-tap feature to bring up the menu doesnt always work very well. This can lead you to sometimes swipe right when you meant to bring up the menu, which fast-forwards the text at rocket speed. This means you lose all the text and the accompanying voices unless you reload a save. The issues are minor. This is a big league purchase for a full game, one youll be unlikely to put down. The story and characters are likeable, thrilling and unique, and well worth the cost of admission. Even if youve seen the anime (which we had seen a few episodes) the game is overflowing with so much detail and extra content, that its easily the most definitive version of the story. (Note to devs – translate more of these into English and youll have a buyer in us!)

So much better than the anime.

Great game, had no technical issues with the app port. Got 100% everything in a little under 40 hours. Even revived some of our Japanese comprehension.

We only bought this to support the devs as we already have this on PC. Needs an overhaul to work better with modern devices like our iPhone 7. True full screen for one would be appreciated.

No sound at all, in the loading screen or during gameplay. We were really excited to play this game, now super disappointed. Using iPhone 5 running iOS 10.2. Tried software update and reinstalling steins;gate app, did not fix the issue.

Finally we can play this on ios Only minus was this app is not universal app people who also own ipad habe to buy it twice… Please also localize the other steins;gate spin off and chaos;head we would please the buy button again.

Thanks for the English translation of this VN. Any chance of Bullet Soul getting released for the iOS? That would be amazing!!!!

We bought the game a day after the release on iOS, and have been testing out the port and translation frantically ever since. We have to say, this is Steins Gate in all its glory, ported to our handheld devices so that we can have this treasure everywhere we go. If you’re reading this then chances are you’ve already either had the pleasure of playing Steins Gate on another platform, or alternatively watched the anime. Steins Gate is immensely popular nowadays and no one, in our circles at least, doesn’t at least know what it’s about. If however you are one of those people who have just became acquainted with the anime, and want to give this game a try, or a friend of yours had recommended the Visual Novel, then this review is for you; it would be meaningless to preach to the choir, since those people either already own the game or plan on getting it. For those of you who know nothing about either the Visual Novel, or the anime, and are checking for a review to see if the game is worth 25 dollars, that being one of the most outrageous price tags in the entire App Store, then keep reading. Steins;Gate is a Visual Novel, that is an interactive virtual book, so to speak. The story is delivered through dialogue between characters (that is for the most part voice acted). You have a hand in much of what happens, though not everything. A virtual novel is not typically a game where you simply read a linear book where you have no choices to make, and the ending is decided from the very beginning. Thus here we have a non-linear storyline that could end up in any of half a dozen directions. You are, or spectate, Rintaro Okabe throughout the entire game. You have access to his innermost thoughts through "text" that is directed to the player, but which naturally fits in the flow of the narrative. The cast of the game also includes a number of other characters, all of whom appear as realistic, pragmatic representations of human people, rather than otherworldly, foreign tools used for the progression of the plot. At the same time though the narrative is built around the characters and if you removed a single one of them the story would collapse on itself: the characters are the story. Every character plays some very important purpose. For example, Daru, "the super hacka" possesses knowledge of computers and hacking that is essential in the unfolding of events. Steins Gate only has a handful of characters to speak of, but they are all strong and relatable. We came to love Luka, a guy who appears a little too feminine, but who is nonetheless of noble heart and quite innocent. His story is one that many can relate to, but we won’t say too much about what happens for fear of spoiling a central part of the plot. Then there’s Suzuha, whose past and future drove us to tears such as we’ve never experienced before. The theme of the game is that of drama, but it’s riddled with smart, well placed humor. This is something that most games get wrong: they don’t know how to combine the two elements of drama and humor. Steins Gate transitions between the two genres smoothly and you always remain fully immersed in the novel. Okabe is a paranoid, conspiracy theorist, and some would even go as far as to call him schizophrenic in the literal sense of the word, but then his theories become true. Scientific theories (in the academic place) are all over the place, and we learned a good deal about physics from listening attentively to the main female lead, Makise Kurisu. Steins Gate comes to grips with loss, human mortality and the inevitability of death; it deals with fate and predestination. The story begins on a lighthearted note but the atmosphere gets ever more eerie as revelations continue to be made. Okabe struggles with a painful dilemma: love and duty; selfishness and selflessness. The player really comes to view Okabe as an extension of himself as he makes the decisions alongside him. It was agonizing to share in all of the calamities Rintaro had to experience time after time. The story is not a success only because of its themes, however. The writing is superb. The creator of this story obviously dedicated the greater part of his time to writing a humorous, and at other times sober narrative that was deeply enthralling to read. The devil lies in the details, as is often said, and in the case of Steins Gate those stay with you long after you finish the game. Those include catch phrases, such as "El Psy Congroo", or a characteristic way of "speaking" on the part of Mayuri, who incidentally calls herself Mayushi. The creator of Steins Gate put a tremendous amount of effort to painting a realistic portrait of a hypothetical world, and it is this that makes the game a masterpiece. We can also derive from all the good science in the book that great detail of study went into making it: Steins Gate is an "educated" VL. We don’t claim to be very good with words, and rarely if ever have we convinced people to stray from the path they were already leaning towards, but we hope that you’re at least 1% more likely to buy the game after the review, than you were before reading it. This is by no means an exhaustive coverage of everything in Steins Gate, nor have we written a complete review. The character limit on the app would have made it impossible for us to cover every single great thing about Steins Gate. As for its faults, we don’t think there any… Worth mentioning, we suppose. And if you do play it and come away with a different conclusion, then please tell us what those failings are.

We love this game so much especially the anime we’re happy they made it for iOS we’re gonna buy all the English version of this game on the platforms that they made it for.

Think of it like buying a new book. We hope they port the other steins gate vn’s to eng as well.

PLEASE UPDATE FOR iOS 10 CRASHS ON MULTI TOUCH CAN NOT BRING UP CONTROLS This game has taken over our life like no game has for many years, the writing the graphics the style the topics. We never want it to end! Please please please bring the rest of the series to English we promise to purchase all of them and tell everyone who will listen.

First off this is a unique time traveling mystery story with great twists and turns. It was the first visual novel we ever played. The story and characters are incredible, but if you came here after seeing the anime you already know that. Much richer than the anime you will see into the characters much more via a neat conversation system. It’s probably used in many other games but it’s a cool system. Other characters text you and you respond by clicking key words in their message. The game generates your text from there and you can expect a response later in the game. We have been waiting years to play this- while the English version released for PC years ago- it was meant to be played on a phone. So glad to see it finally here. Wish we didn’t have to discover it randomly, but it did make our night!

Seriously. If you love good stories, pick this up. If you love anime, pick this up. If you love talented / popular Japanese voice actors, pick this up. If you love greatly optimized apps, pick this up. We’re disappointed this hasn’t front paged the app store because this is quite frankly a legendary release. Now we just hope they release the rest of the Stein stories in English!

We’re glad they released the english version on iOS in anticipation of Steins;Gate 0.

Probably one of the best visual novels of all time. It tells a fantastic, thrilling story of times travel, trauma, and romance. We’re so glad it got ported to iOS. Great job 5pb.
