Hear from the Players – Tengami Reviews

Find out what gamers are saying about Tengami:

We have fond memories of playing this one. Its relaxing, and we love the wolves. We mostly play it on long plane flights. We think we’ve gone through from beginning to end six times at least? Havent played it in a while, but we will update this review when we have the chance to do another run through!

Visually, the game is beautiful. However it is quite short at only three chapters and the game play is not especially challenging.

We highly recommend this experience/game…. Its got beautiful graphics and a great way to have some fun and relax at the same time! Fantastic job with this one!

We’ve just finished our 3rd time through in as many years. Its so relaxing, with lovely music, graphics, story. We take our time working through it and it lasts for several weeks. We wish there was a Tengami 2. Thank you to the developers for a meaningful and enjoyable experience.

We have replayed it several times because its just beautiful to look at and explore. All of the little details just make it. We love the music too, its soothing and fits into each scene, complementing it rather than being a distraction. This is art in game form. We do sometimes wish it were a bit longer and that there was a way to explore more freely, but its still a little gem. Highly recommended, we really hope to see more from this developer someday.

Absolutely. Beautiful. If you enjoy beauty and puzzles and origami — if you appreciate creativity and cleverness — you need to see and play this game. It’s slow-paced so it’s soothing in all ways.

Moves slowly, a plus in this game to better immersive the player in the gorgeous graphics. We loved it, but wish it was longer.

Its a short game but the puzzles are decent, and the artwork and music are beautiful and immersive. Our one and only criticism is that the character walks so slowly presumably to force you to take some time to appreciate the landscapes!

If you pay for a game, you should not expect to beat/finish it in a couple hours. We LOVE the format, music, animation, puzzles… But 3 levels? Seriously? There were a couple puzzles we had to work a little harder to figure out, but for the most part it was intuitive and too simple. It is visually awesome, the music is soothing and sublime. We could play it for days, but, unfortunately, only 3 levels.

This game is a great idea, but it feels like a prototype of a full game. Not quite polished enough and too short. The puzzles are sometimes so simple that you end up looking around for a more difficult solution only to be surprised that all you have to do to solve them is count things. A lesson could be learned from games like The Room. The game in general is beautiful, but there are certain details where shortcuts seem to have been taken and more fluid movement of the character could give the game a more complete feel. It feels like some movements of the character were skipped to come back to later perfected (only they werent). And finally, the game is really short. Like one hour worth of gameplay. It feels like the designers developed a few levels as a prototype and then they just never developed any more. For the $3.99 price, it feels like you should be getting more. Great idea for a game, but just seems like someone rushed to get this out the door when too many things were left unfinished/unperfected.

UPDATE: While our experience of the game has not changed, we’ve (reluctantly) lowered our review of the application in response to not being able to play it on our iPad 2. This is our first experience of purchasing an app that we’ve been locked out of because it evolved further than our hardware can upgrade; usually, applications have permitted us to keep our older version of the software. Again, the game itself is lovely; we simply cannot play it now. I’d like to quote the exquisite review of Tengami gamer Peter Maurer in our attempt to summarize Tengami: "It’s a video gaming equivalent of wandering a meadow in a national park, or hiking some miles along a coastline." This game is really for those of us who take time out of each day to appreciate the beauty in the natural world. It’s like a storybook setting, made up of beautifully illustrated flip pages of attractive, interactive scenery. We love it.

This is a beautiful game, but $3.99 for a 3 level game is just robbery.

The art and music are beautiful but the game itself is not good. The character moves clumsily (with a tiring double click) and it is sometimes difficult to pick up objects. Most of the game consists of wandering around wondering where you are supposed to be and what you are supposed to do to advance the game (even with the hints). By the second half of the third chapter we were beyond frustrated and more than ready for the game to end.

Im using an IPhone 8 and the first page of the game starts out with a slide to open button. We slid it but the game wont open A waste of money for sure. Hey Developers- any help?

Completely overrated. The only entertaining aspect of this game is the pop up book style art / mechanics, which become slow and repetitive as you progress through the game. There are some poorly written Haiku-style poems between the chapters (there are only 3) which serve no purpose except to augment the cheaply engineered Japanese aesthetic. Terrible and utterly disappointing.

Beautiful game. Good puzzles. Meditative. As in if the character walked any slower hed be going backward. You might as well learn to meditate because there is no way to speed walking or sailing. And theres not much of a story to distract. Seriously detracted from our enjoyment of the game. Not sure we will finish.

We feel we wasted our money.. We have no clue how to maneuver thru game, however graphics are very good. We want a game we can play without having to go online to figure it out.

Love the game, very beautiful and imaginative. Make another one and we will buy! Love what you did!

The game is beautiful to play and has a very pretty soundtrack. The puzzles are not too hard but do require a little bit of thought. The only think we didn’t like was how short it was. Didn’t want it to end.

Forget the length, if you want to play something different then this is a game for you… The pop up book look is stunning to watch and ‘unfold’ the subtle story…. If you appreciate art and games – you need to try this out.

The entire game takes place within an Japanese style pop-up book. The graphics, watercolor style, are amazing. Our only complaint was the length, too short, we’re hopeful another chapter will be made. Well worth the cost.

We almost took off a star because it’s so short, but couldn’t because it’s so unique and beautiful!! Please please please nyamyam, make another, create more!! This and Monument Valley have to be the two best indie iPhone games we’ve ever experienced.

Love this game, beautiful scenes, fun, puzzle, would love to see more like this. Couldn’t stop playing and didn’t want it to end.

Absolutely beautiful. It’s a poem in visual form, built of paper shapes and gorgeous textures. We wish it were longer, not because it feels incomplete, but because we don’t want it to end!

Very beautiful. Better than monument valley.

This game was so fun to play, and it was very unique in it’s gameplay. We loved it very much and would love to play more games just like this. We would gladly pay money for any other games made by nyamyam if they were made in the same style :)

This is truly an original, from the charming graphics to the thoughtful puzzles. Most of the puzzles are easy with a bit of thought and there are hints if needed.

The music, gameplay, and graphics were all fantastic. Truly an innovative game, unique without being pretentious. Highly recommend this experience for anyone.

Walking and sailing through the pop-up book Japanese landscape is a lovely experience. No mayhem, no extreme brain-bending puzzles. More akin to an artwork than your average game. The clues provided are just enough to keep you exploring. We definitely wanted the game to last longer and also wished for a more engaging story line. We hope the team comes up with another, more complex adventure in the same style.

Yes, this game is short, just a couple hours probably. It’s not always easy to understand what you need to do, but luckily there are walk throughs online. This game has a unique style and really beautiful art and music. Just for those alone we recommend getting it. Hope there will be a sequel!

As most other reviewers have pointed out, the artwork and music is very soothing and enjoyable. However, the game is ridiculously short. We finished it in about 3 hours for our first run through. We were really hoping it would last longer than that. However, we would say it was worth the money.

Although sometimes confusing, the hints were so helpful to figure out the puzzles and we wished there was more to the story or other stories to play! We would love to play more!

App nice to look at, good music but controls are sluggish on an iPad Air 3. Movement across the screen takes too many taps, cannot walk in areas that look accessible. Each screen should have something to do or advance the game, instead sometimes is necessary to move though 2 or 3 screens to get to the next point of interest.

Good quality but too short. We expected more for the money paid. Especially when there are so many games that are free!

Pretty and peaceful but we have no clue what to do. You definitely need to add clues or hints. Eventually got bored slowly walking around. Deleted game.

The design is beautiful – really extraordinary, albeit a little small to really appreciate from a phone screen, but on screen after screen we just keep finding we have no idea what we’re supposed to do. Sadly – the game just leaves you clueless as to what to do next and we find myself toggling back and forth between a few pages, having no idea what to do next until we finally get bored and just quit. Rather disappointing.

So we bought this game for how much it was but it definitely did not have enough content for the price! It has a really great sound track and a cool concept! But it definitely was not worth the money! Very little puzzles and easy puzzles! I’d wait till it comes out for free!

This is a one time through game, and we finished it in about three hours. Way too expensive for an app that you can only enjoy once. It’s beautiful and enjoyable but a terrible value!!!!

Please fix this error, right after we downloaded we tried to open it and it continues to crash.

We like to take some quiet time before bed and relax, and this story book game has the most relaxing music and it is a game that allows you to work simple problems to tell a story, without stress. It actually relaxes us and makes us feel good. We highly recommend it to people who do not need an action packed game, but like story books ( like adult pop up story books), that are very Zen.

An absolutely GORGEOUS game. Other reviewers haven’t seen the point, but the point is the beautiful journey. Puzzles are ok, but it’s the soothing, strolling nature of this game that is worth it. We really wish it was longer- we played it in an hour and a half without stopping. But still worth 5 stars for the immersive story and lovely pop up book graphics.

Tengami is a visually stunning game! The flip storybook aspect is very unique and adds an interesting element to the gameplay. The music is very calming which makes the game itself a very casual and flaming game. The simple but yet complex levels are very easy to pick up on, and once you’ve discovered the style of the game you won’t want to stop playing. Though at this time the game seems like it will be very short. We say this because we are restoring the blossoms of a cherry tree and we’ve done the love half of the tree in about an hour. Take our word for it! Tengami has all the makings for a top game! And we’re very curious to see how it all ends.

This is a point and click adventure game except it’s a character exploring his way through a gorgeous pop up book full of nature. Sometimes you’re on land and sometimes on water. This is the first game to use this pop up book concept. If someone gave this a negative review we’re assuming they’re a poor sport who got stuck. Great game.

We loved this game. Its "lack" of detailed plot leaves it open for us to imagine the some of the story for ourselves. Sometimes, this is more powerful than a laid-out story because it is more personal and can hold a special place in our hearts.

Beautiful graphics and zen-like music with great puzzles, this game is a must-have for adventure gamers.

This game was wonderful and worth the money! It is beautiful and challenging but exciting! Would of liked for it to be longer but oh well still fun.

Yes, the character might walk very slow, but does that mean a game is dumb? No! You’re trying to collect the flowers to save the dying cherry blossom tree. It is a fantastic, beautiful and traditional Japanese story and was very dear to us. We enjoyed this game and even though at some points it may be hard, we still loved it. Thank you for this games!

We wasn’t sure what to make of this based on reviews. Some were horrible and complained of boredom, while others loved it. If you want to think and contemplate, this game is for you. Don’t use the hints – just play and enjoy the challenge. We loved it and only wished it was longer. It’s not an action game, but it’s a beautiful addition to any library.
