What Makes The Eagle's Heir Stand Out

Defend Napoleon's heir in this steampunk alternate history game of political maneuvering, airship adventure, and romantic intrigue! Will you bring liberty to France, or plunge Europe into bloody war?

"The Eagle's Heir" is a 200,000 word interactive novel by Amy Griswold and Jo Graham. It's entirely text-based, without graphics, or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Since Napoleon won the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, seventeen years ago, Europe has enjoyed an uneasy peace. While the great empires of Austria, Russia and England have tried to stem the tide of revolution, France has mastered steam power to conquer the air and sea. Now, Napoleon’s health is failing, and France is torn between his legitimate heir, Franz, and his illegitimate son Alexandre.

Luckily, Alexandre has you, his loyal bodyguard and childhood companion, skilled in the arts of the duel and the ballroom, and ready for anything from diplomacy to airship combat!

It's brother against brother as you choose who will rule France, and how. Will France have a king, an emperor, or become a republic? Can you guide your lifelong friend Alexandre to the throne, and keep not just your prince but his revolutionary ideals alive? Or will you throw your weight behind his half-brother Franz? Will you defeat France’s enemies with the thunder of airship guns or forge a marriage alliance in gaslit ballrooms?

• Play as male, female, genderfluid, or non-binary; gay, straight, or asexual
• Race airships across the English Channel
• Find romance with a journalist or a lady's maid, or ménage a trois at the Tuileries Palace
• Join a motley crew of actors in the revolutionary cause, or spy on them for your allies
• Duel aristocrats to preserve your and Alexandre's honor
• Plan a scandalous elopement which sends Europe into an uproar

When swords cross before the throne, who will be the Eagle's Heir?

Community Insight:

We knew next to nothing about the steampunk genre before and we know nothing about the 1800s. All of our knowledge of Napoleon comes from high school classes over a decade ago and if we had to take a quiz on it again, we'd probably fail. And yet, we still thoroughly enjoyed this game. Very well done.

Ive played a lot of choose your own adventure styled games. And this is fun but very short and has limited replay. Its fine though we enjoyed it.

We LOVE this game! As someone who has visited the places in the game and studied the history of the time period, it was a real treat to run around in this exciting alternate historical romance novella. We had so much fun! We didnt know how things would turn out, and we still dont exactly know how everything will turn outso we will definitely be playing over and over again.

Loved the story and characters, a fun dip into historical fiction with a well-written premise.

Any game that allows us to have a bisexual threesome is a win in our book. 10/10.

Our favorite by leaps and bounds.

We're a big fan of choice of games but have fallen behind in our playing lately. This game reminded us why we love this type of game so much. A rip roaring adventure for sure! Even if you aren't a history buff there is plenty of fun to be had in this what if/alternative take on history. Air ship and spy games and romance and politics galore! We look forward to replaying because there seems to be quite a few endings one can get.

Really well written and fun! Played it though many times now and we still can't figure out how to win the airship race. However, Mademoiselle Josher71 will not be deterred.

We're a huge history buff and love Napoleon, so this has turned out to be one of our favorite choice of games. The only problem we've noticed so far is the ending of the game acts as though you've romanced Constance regardless of whether you have or not, and you seemingly can't romance Eugenie without sacrificing parts of the mission. We would recommend fixing whatever the bug is with Constance asking you to practice fidelity with her even if you've never romanced her, and perhaps separating romance opportunities into a different section so you don't feel like you are abandoning your post as a bodyguard to go flirting. Other than that we thoroughly enjoyed The Eagle's Heir and recommend it to anyone reading this review.

This game was amazing! If you're a fan of history and romance, this is certainly a wonderful combination of the two. While playing the game, we had a variety of lovers from both genders, so it's very diverse. Or choose to love no one. Either way, this game is amazing and takes real events and real people and totally reinvents them. It's totally worth the money. :).

We own all of the choice of games (we may have a problem) and this one is legitimately one of, if not the, best. Tons of different routes, meaningful gender choices and beautiful writing.

Super fun to replay. We had a great time trying to get all the different endings.

It was well written however not many meaningful choices. We really wanted to like this but no matter how hard we tried it just fell short of our expectations. The story was OK but could've been better.

Pros: Strong writing and world-building. Cons: Felt like we were constantly reaffirming our character's gender and sexuality and then not getting appropriate choices regardless. Felt like we wasn't able to improve our stats effectively to face obstacles. Game ended abruptly and unsatisfactorily as a result of "choose the right option" at the end. (Didn't realize it was a skill check, so obviously chose the wrong one).
