Its a great game! But there are a couple of bugs. We tried to do online play and play with one of our friends, but it kept crashing. We also cant figure out how to make an online account to get an achievement. That brings us to the next topic: achievements. There are a couple of easy ones, but one of them is literally to be the best player in the world. WHY?! Other than thats the bots almost always just go the spot in front of you. Also whats the puppet for on pass and play. Theres always just a puppet and a player has to move him and that means theres always an extra player. Other than that, its amazing.
Update: Even after the patch, the game is still unplayable! After arriving at the first inn checkpoint and finishing the meal, players get locked out. | Bought the game to play online with someone but there is a bug that makes it so that when both players have joined, it becomes two concurrent games that play at the same time. Makes it unplayable.
The stylized font for Japanese looks great, but the developer should not have used it for Chinese. This is because Kanji does not cover all Chinese characters. When you use a Japanese font for Chinese, many Chinese characters do not even exist in such a font, so they have to fallback to the default font provided by the OS, resulting in a really messy GUI.
Like this game. Really, love this game. But it needs the expansions. Hopefully the new developers will bring that to us.
A beautiful, relaxing game which has had any earlier issues fixed by the developers. Take a vacation along the coast, with wonderfully animated characters and locations. Now were waiting on the wonderful Crossroads and Matsuri expansions. Crossroads turns every location into a choice, turning a game of hopscotch into a piece of real strategy, as you can now choose legendary souvenirs, end of game bonuses, one off powers, a risky round of gambling, and more. Matsuri adds many new characters and adds an event at each step of the journey which affects the game, greatly improving variation and replayability. And maybe even promos and the New Encounters? Even without these, our girlfriend and we love playing this game. Once theyre here, itll take over many dinners and game nights each week. Cant wait.
Loved the board game but it isnt always easy to get three people to play. So its nice to be able to play solo. Only problem seems to a bug where we choose a meal at the last inn and it doesnt give us the points. Doesnt happen every time and its not limited to one character but it happens frequently enough to notice. Other than its a great adaptation both in game play and visual design.
Its a great game and we play it with our partner all the time. Unfortunately the expansion packages are not included and we are tired of the characters available.
Good game, havent played the actual board game before but was easy to learn and play with a 10-year old. But neither of us gets any sound/ music. In settings weve tried everything from toggling music/ volume/ language to no use. Weve tried downloading in multiple devices – phones/ iPads.. All have the same issue. Is anyone else seeing that or are we doing something completely stupid? Looks like an easy one to fix if its a bug.
There is a bug with Chubei. Played a game online with a friend. In the end, there was a discrepancy in the scoring between our game and our friends game. He was playing Chubei – he had an extra 5 points that was not reflected on our game. When looking into the details, we saw that his game showed 2 additional panorama sections that he received from encounters which was not apparent on our game. For some reason, the panoramas from encounters are not registering.
There is absolutely no one online playing this game. Please save your money before thinking youll be paying with anyone online.
Already owned the actual board game before downloading. Nice animations, artwork. Hope the expansions will be released soon.
This is one of our favorite games but would love if the would add the crossroads expansion with all characters & game extras.
We love this game and its beautifully made. One major bug that hasnt been fixed in the half year Ive owned it is when you play the character Chubei. Chubei gains an extra visit each time he eats a meal at an inn. If you receive the mountain panorama, for example, but have already completed it – you will be given a choice of a different panorama. However, after you choose you cant proceed with the game and are frozen. Please correct this! Second, certain characters you know they will skip coins etc. So easy to defeat them because you know they will skip. If AI were improved to make them still get coins when low that might make it more interesting because pretty easy to win. Otherwise love it so 4 stars. Please fix Chubei bug.
The game is fun, gorgeous, and captivating, but the achievements dont work! Ive completed the the preliminary achievements but they dont update as completed. Also, the touch screen is very sensitive with no way to modify it. Still, a fun and beautiful experience.
What a beautiful game. We only play solo, so we cant speak to online issues. But this app is flawless in solo play. Others have mentioned the tutorial being minimal, but we thought it sufficed and was well done. It gives you what you need to get started. Rules and strategy are easily available online if you need them, but this game is meant to be an exploration, its about the journey. The pace is relaxing, but there is still a strategy and challenge to it. Its not overly hard nor too easy. Its simply a relaxing, fun game. Im glad that when you start a new solo game, you can click in settings for that game and set it to fast AI. Thats great for when you dont have as much time. But the regular speed is perfect for a relaxing game. Thank you for a good game at a good price with no ads or IAP. Its also good on battery life. Im very happy to own this game.
We love this game, the artwork, and the fact that is cross platform compatible!! We just wish theyd add the expansions.
We love tabletop games and have always wanted to try Tokaido after seeing it on Tabletop with Wil Wheaton. This game is so much fun and such a breath of fresh air in comparison to other games where the object to kill monsters etc to win. A great combination of relaxing and strategic! Officially addicted to Tokaido on our iPad and now we definitely have to buy the boardgame.
Really good but our phone is small, so we would like to get it on another device. Could we get a refund if it is possible.
Hey friends! We love the physical and the digital game. Playing with our kids. :) Minor bug showed up last night: character tokens settle on top of each other like a stack so the first player to land on a feature with two spots is hidden by the seconds token. It wasnt doing that for the first couple weeks we had the game. Thoughts.
This game is great when you play offline. EVERY SINGLE TIME we play with friends, it glitches out at the end and skips the achievements. It goes straight to the leaderboard. 8/10 times our friends and we all have different scores and winners on our different phones. This is super annoying and leads to many arguments for the ultra competitive people we are. We still play and love the game, but it would be wonderful if this wasnt an issue.
Offline solo play against AI opponents works fine. On-line play is completely non-functional. Been trying to join a public on-line game or host one, for weeks, but it NEVER works. So sad the multiplayer is so broken.
The app version of Tokaido is just what you would expect – an enjoyable and beautiful game. However, as much fun as the game is to play, online games are constantly plagued with issues such as giving your actions to one of the other players. We just played a game where our character received a bonus for stopping at an encounter space, we neither got the bonus point and coin, nor received the three coins from the encounter. They all went to the player who ended up winning the game, as they used our coins at the temple to tie us for most donations. Things like this happen every game. Yesterday we bought two items from the market at one stop and they were both given to one of the other players. Sometimes meals from the inn are purchased and go to one of the other players, so there go 6 points down the drain. Ive been playing the board game version of Tokaido for years, and until the online issues are fixed, that is the best option for a fair game (or Boardgamearena.com).
Ive played this game a lot offline as solo and pass and play which works great. But we tried playing online with friends, and it doesnt work. Theres an option to add friends, but then you cant create a private room or do anything with them. Not sure why it has space to add friends if it does nothing. If you create a room, it doesnt show up reliably, and it allows anyone in. We had to cancel rooms with strangers, and we felt bad about that. Our husband sitting next to us could see rooms we created and vice versa.
This game has been out a long time now without any additional expansions. Its a lovely game and a pretty good adaptation of the board game. But without the Crossroads and Matsuri expansions, it gets boring pretty quickly. When will we see them.
Its such a pretty game and we really enjoy it, but it has so many technical problems. Really hope they can release some updates to fix things. We havent been able to finish a game yet because the app will randomly force quit and it does not give you an option to go back to your game. You have to start all over. We tried to play with a friend online but we eventually game up because it would make us login over and over, say it didnt recognize our passwords, start to connect and not finish, etc. We enjoy the game, wish everything would work so we could really play.
… And this app was free. Beautiful concept, poor execution. The have has a variety of issues. In addition to the game freezing and not being able to get back in, there are all kinds of things that mess with the game when playing online. Some include Donations to the Temple not being credited, or being credited to another player. Items purchased at the market not being received, but takes the coins. Food at the Inn that was purchased doesnt show in players collection, or goes to another player. Stopping at the farm and not getting the coins. * Two players with the same character. On top of those, finding friends and playing with them doesnt work. It could not locate players by their nickname and we were only able to connect when both in the waiting room. Finally, you cant do anything else on your device while playing. If you go out of the app for any reason, or even get a phone call, you cannot reconnect to your game.
Bought to play with family and friends during the Covid Quarantine, and it never works. Can not get through a full game without the game crashing. Plus playing online is incredibly difficult to set up and clunky. Fix the online garbage and Ill change our rating.
The number one goal of a tutorial is to state your goal. We played this twice through and still don't know the objective, how to play or win. At the end there's just a congratulations (apparently we won) with no scoring. The tutorial takes you through like 4 steps then says you're on your own but will help along the way which never happens. Without instructions (yes there are none to refer to) the game is sort of useless. It will only serve those who've played before or own the game. Sorry it's a nice graphical and sound app but as a board game we have no idea what's going on.
Our husband and we both downloaded this game because we have the board game and love it. It seems like they focused too much on the aesthetics and not enough on game function. We got a phone call in the middle of our first game and it kicked everyone off and deleted the game. Every time you close the app it logs you out. We haven't been able to log in for hours because the server isn't responding. There is a tutorial but it doesn't really explain how points are scored, so if you hadn't played the board game it would be confusing. We will update our review if these issues get resolved but so far we are very disappointed. One thing they did right is the visuals. It is illustrated beautifully and is one of the prettiest games we've seen on IOS.
We loved the boardGame and we were so excited to find this app. However it is too buggy to finish a game. It took our friend and we an hour to figure out how to friend each other and start a game. Afterwards, we tried two games and both times the ai crashed. Would have liked it to at least be playable considering we paid money.
We would give this game a lower star if we could. It deserves negative stars. If we buy a game, we want the game to actually work. It does not work more than half the time. THe developer also never bothered to fix the game. Please do yourself a favor and dont buy it. Dont let the devs make any more money off of this game that they will not fix.
Did the tutorial and still have no idea what to do. Guidance is cryptic at best. We have the impression one needs to have learned the board game first.
The game is pretty and they really did a nice job recreating the board game but the online play doesnt work at all. More than half the time you get booted or the game crashes sometimes if youre really lucky you can actually play through with others. Really disappointed the online play isnt more stable.
The game gets stuck and we cant continue.
Beautiful game, but the achievements are totally bugged. We keep unlocking achievements that are nowhere near close to being correct – for example, getting the achievement for winning a game when we were in last place, for successfully playing 50 times when Ive only played twice… We suspect the game currently counts anything the AI does towards achievements as well, since the AI doing things like finishing a panorama causes the achievement to pop. What makes this worse is that the achievements repeat, so Im basically getting spammed with notifications throughout the whole game as half the AIs actions trigger some kind of achievement. We see patch notes saying they fixed this problem but its certainly not fixed for us. Id also appreciate if game settings (like fast AI movement) were retained throughout all games.
We love this game. Its relaxing and beautiful to look at. It isnt overly difficult and you learn fast how to play. One of the best games on the App Store.
We love this game, however we have question about a particular aspect of the gameplay.With the panoramas, are the only people to score points for completing them the first one who completes it? And if someone has completed a particular panorama, lets say the mountain one, is there any benefit to you to land on the mountain space and get a piece of the panorama? Or do you get no benefit since it was already completed? Thank you for the great game.
We dont normally leave reviews or comments but we had never heard of this game and we saw a review of this app on our google feed and decided to read it. We became intrigued after reading about this game and the highly favorable comments by others and we started to look at the board game and we decided to give it a try for only 1.99. We cannot stop playing this game! The rules were a tad bit confusing and even the tutorial doesnt fully explain everything so we went online and did some slight research on all the different spots you land on and how they work, and it was easy to understand how it all comes together. We only had to play twice to get an understanding of this game and we are blown away. Cant believe we had never hear of this game earlier. We are strongly considering getting the board game now! Our only gripe is: where is the expansion!? We hope they actually release it because it would make this amazing game even better. We seriously cannot stop playing. Once we started we gotta play like 5 games in a row(which take like 13 minutes a piece) but its so addicting even when you dont win, you enjoy having played a round so much that we wanna play again and again! If you are on the fence about it, pick this game up. There are no bug crashes or glitches after only have this game for 2 days but we cant keep our battery life! Get this now guys.
Sutsuki the orphan cant receive free meal cards if the meals presented are the same as a previously given meal.
Our wife and two children love playing Tokaido on pass and play mode as part of our family game night. The game is great family fun. Theres one issue though with the way turns are generated when you reach a double space. What should happen, based on the rules available on line, is that the first (we.e., bottom) player gets the next turn. However, what is happening is that the second (top) player is getting that next turn… Hope you can update the game to fix that, otherwise this is a 5-star app.
We had an encounter and received the 3rd piece of the paddy panorama and got the 3 bonus points. Then it said that we had already completed that panorama and offered us a piece of a different one immediately after. Now that we think about it, an AI player may have already finished the paddy panorama but we also got the bonus, although Im not completely sure if thats the case. Also, whenever we try multiplayer there are no games available, not sure exactly why though. Other than those two things Ive been using this app for awhile now and really love the game! Been waiting forever for crossroads though.
If we don't finish a game and come back to it later, we usually have to start over from the beginning. It's frustrating if we get interrupted and want to finish the game later. Other than that, it's fun.
Just downloaded this game so our husband and we can play while at work, since we have the board game and love it. Unfortunately, it is not allowing us to add each other as friends. Player not found. There is no player with this name on our server. Message pops up. Please advise on how to add friends.

Beautiful game, fun to play, beautifully laid out. The trouble is that we cant get through a full game without it crashing: sometimes within the first few rounds, sometimes close to the end. But we have yet to finish a game. PLEASE FIX THIS!!! The game is unplayable in its present state. EDIT: we have the new iPad Pro 11inch, model MTXN2LL/A.
Made worse by the fact that the game doesnt save your progress. It crashes and youre done. Start over. Booo.
You guys need to get on the big fixes. Its starting to be a frustrating experience.

Very solid implementation of the board game and really nice graphics. Some minor user experience issues: – If we tell the app, we dont need the tutorial, it should be permanent. We dont want to launch the app the next time and start with the tutorial again! – When you stop at a non-interactive location, such as painting or bathing, double confirm to move on is frustrating. Just display the card and proceed, dont waste the users time! – Introduce turn-based multiplayer when each player has a specific time frame to respond because the current always online clearly doesnt work.
We have the deluxe board game at home, its a family fave – lovely game! Excited to have a little side game on our phone. Beautifully done. Recently deleted app and reinstalled as it started crashing after a while and got caught in an endless loop once. Thanks for making this, really looking forward to the expansion.
