Top Sailor Reviews

We love this game and its addicting.

All our life we have wanted to be a sailor. Everyday we would slave away at memorizing our points of sail. Now that we have this app, Top Sailer has saved our bread. We have been nominated for president sailor in our region. We are one of the best sailors in the world. The characters are so real and feel like close friends after the years. Lovely app 10/10!

The graphics are good, the controls are spot on. And overall its a great game.

Thank you for updating this to work on iOS 11+. Its our favorite thing on the whole iPhone and we really missed it! We have a cruiser but this gives you such a feeling of the wind and water that we dont miss an advanced sail plan like some other critics want. Its simple and wonderful. Dont change! Oh except… Haha. The wind sound seems to be more extreme than the wind conditions. A fine tune if any. We really love this app!

Outstanding graphics and realism. Unbelievable courses. Beautiful. Request the camera button be relocated away from he sail trim slider. Please for the love of God, have the option to move the rudder to the left side of the screen. 2 reasons; 1. Its more ergonomic. Instead of stretching your hand and loosing the ability to reach full right rudder because the main sheet is in the way – itll always have full range and feel more natural to how we hold the screen. 1. Always at the most inopportune times, such as when stretching your finger over to the far side of the screen to tack, if your finger lifts off the screen even just a tiny bit, the phone interprets this as minimizing the app which then causes the game to pause. But when you hit Resume, youve lost control. Along with this, the main sheet often becomes unresponsive to touch. A very frustrating and repetitive occurrence. Its literally the only things that make us want to throw our phone. PLEASE DEAR GOD FIX THIS ISSUE!!!!!!!!

Great feel, using indicators that are as subtle as you care to make them. Lots of options, and the races are unpredictable and fun. Overall, a great game for dinghy sailors!

For solo dingy sailing, the accuracy of how the boat handles is amazing. This game would be perfect if the races had starting sequences and judged penalties by who had right of way. Although sailing lacks speed and has a very discouraging learning curve, this game has more depth than most (if not all) of the iOS racing genre.

Best sailing sim on the app store.

Fun racing. The wind shifts are a little predictable on the more advanced courses, but overall, great sailing sim.

The sailing physics are quite nice. Solid simulation foundation. Quite like the game. Unfortunately, much of it gets spoiled by the interaction and UI. The most annoying thing is the camera. In almost every race we accidentally move the camera, looking up into the sky or backwards, causing us to capsize or do some other unfortunate maneuver. The left, right and bottom areas should be completely reserved for steering controls instead of having the available touch area limited to the actual icon. Also, instead of the view toggle button, I’d prefer explicit view buttons that can be accessed quickly, among them a completely locked camera. One other annoying thing is the wind changing directions in a very unrealistic way. Within one race the wind sometimes rotates around at random up to a 180 degrees. This usually doesn’t happen in the real world. At least not within 10 sec. ;) Last we agree with a previous reviewer, the capsize happens too quickly. Of course, we would also like to see some other boats added as other reviewers suggested. Especially the addition of a jib equipped boat that can sail higher into the wind would be great but first and foremost the UI issues would be a much more important bug to fix. Thanks a lot and keep up the great work. Great game.

Like to see a variation in boat choices and diffrent sized boats. Fun game none the less.

Great little sailing simulator, but the changing direction of the wind is definitely over the top. That part can be super frustrating sometimes. Otherwise, we love playing this game.

Some VERY nice updates have been done since we first posted a review, so we have to update. It’s becoming more polished. Surely a great sailing sim. Now to new suggestions. After we tip it’s hard to get going, we find it has us in "player view control mode?" until the sail is up. We would like to lock our view. For example. We pick "sailer view" from the option. We then want to be closer, so we use fingers to ZOOM in more and get lower to the water to get more of a "in boat" view and feel. It would be nice to be able to "SAVE" and lock that view so that we don’t accidentally move/change the view while playing. Or please add one step closer (auto view option) where the view might be sailors view from "on the boat". We also wished the boats moved more smoothy. There is some erratic movement currently at times. Normally on a real capsize it’s a very slow "OH NO" slow motion action. (in real life) but in the game it’s a FAST FLIP, twitch… And delay to get started. I’d also love to see the players boat be smoother. The top sides of the boat are a bit crude. As this sim gets BETTER AND BETTER and it is one of our FAVORITE APPS – we hope to see more polish to the players boat graphics and movement. LOVE the water movement, and color and clouds, reflections… Etc. Especially in the Caribbean scenery. WOW… But we can’t really appreciate the water graphics on any but the closest view option. As a hobie cat sailer – I’d also love to see a catamaran option. Or even a more graceful single hull. Keep up the great work – we RECOMMEND THIS APP HIGHLY.

Fun accurate and realistic. Well done.

But make there be ice bergs so we need to be careful.

We are a newbie sailor and we tried sailX for a bit but did not like it. This one is perfect for us on ipad mini. It works well, has many compulsory tutorials that forces you to learn and each race takes a realistic amount of time. We noticed that we had the same problems here that we had in real sailing which allows us to improve our weak areas through playing the game. Some minor annoyances for which we docked a star. – often we wish there was a way toggle to another view – capsizing is a bit weak. You just don’t see it coming to prevent it. – graphics are okay – nothing fancy. But we were looking for good physics – we found that on ipad it is best to control tiller through tilt which means your posture while playing is important Thank you for your hard work at a good price! God bless.

This is a great simulator for a mobile device. Wind mechanics are spot on. Our only complaints are that there should be many different kinds of boats to choose from and you should be able to exactly what windspeed to sail. All-in-all, a terrific game!

We criticized this app for not having the tiller work like a real sailboat (moving tiller to port moves the boat to starboard and vice versa). Also could not locate wind and boat speed. Then we just figured out how to correct the tiller issue. Under setting (tools button), then click controls, then scroll way down to advanced settings (can’t see these settings on ipad without scrolling), then there’s an option to reverse tiller action. Also, there’s an advanced setting for wind and boat speed. We’re much happier now. Very good practice tool for adjusting sails and headings. A jib sail and winches would be nice. Animation is fine, but not like those car racing apps.

Well this doesn’t compare with the other simulation games for the PC. This game is average we give it 2.

We’ve been looking for a good sailing simulator for the Mac platform for years. Thanks goodness at the very least we have this app on our iPhone. It is one of the best dinghy sailing simulator we have ever tried. We feel like it is actually making us a better sailor. Would love to be able to use this on the big screen on our iMac!

This is a very difficult program to use and on top of that, no instructions on how to use the program. The techniques of sailing are ok, it’s the mechanics of the program that gives us pause.

Nicely simplified sailing model satisfies the sailor in us while not being too complicated for a casual game or a constrained screen. Extremely well thought out controls and feedback specifically designed for a touch interface. Really well done tutorial that goes quickly and works for a beginner without being frustrating to someone who knows the basics of sailing already. Biggest problem is it makes us wish we were out on the water :) Oh, and an iPhone 5 update would be nice, but five stars anyway.

We enjoyed Little Sailor tremendously. However, Top Sailor is a disappointment. Why? Because we can’t even open it unless we join Facebook, Twitter, or figure out the ‘nick name’ maze. We do not want to be forced into social networks. These new requirements mean only one thing: you can have the app back. We don’t want it anymore.

We sail every summer and we have been looking for a sailing simulator so we can "sail" at night or during the winter, ( we live up north) this is the game of our dreams! Thank you!! It would be better if you made an actual free sailing mode and put more obstacles in it. We love how you can capsize other boats and and the graphics are great too. Thank you for making a great game and for making it affordable!!

Title does not do it justice. Game is very realistic, extremely sensitive, and very accurate. Lots of fun, best sailing sim/app we’ve found.

Beautiful, realistic, engaging, fun. We love this game. Coincidentally the sailboat looks a lot like our own boat, so there is a warm fuzzy feeling too.

Fun game, but starboard over port, and leeward over windward. Those are two basic rules we want to see implemented. We hate time penalties for people hitting us while they are on port! Also: maybe a bit more centerboard. We’re slip sliding all over :)

This app caught us a little off guard… From the screenshots we were expecting a good looking but "arcadey" sail racing game. Instead we found a pretty good simulator that has decent controls and a believable physics model. Sometimes it’s hard to tack without losing momentum, and a bad gybe get result in a capsize. Wind is shown in a thumbnail view, or optionally in visible 3d wisps through the air. To sail well you have to worry about sail angle, wind angle, drift and momentum. Relative wind also seems to factored in. Animation and graphics are smooth on the new iPad. There’s a number of different race layouts, you sail on corrected time with up to six other computer opponents and real life strategies work in the game. Sometimes the "variable winds" are a bit unrealistic in the wildness of the shifts, but you can change the setting for that. You can sail freely without racing too, just don’t go through the start gate at the beginning. In addition to being a fun game, the best compliment we can give Little Sailor is that it can easily be used to teach the real principles of sailing, we used it to show our daughters some ideas about falling off a bit to increase boat speed and improve VMG instead of pointing as high as possible. A recording mechanism lets you save and playback races from any angle so you can analyze and coach as well. If there’s any downside it’s that it is so good you want more: different types of boats and local or Internet multiplayer would be great. Don’t let that you from getting it now though because what’s there is very polished.

Fun game easy to learn yet challenging enough to not be boring. It’s seems to be picky about sail trim it helps to watch the boats wake when trimming sail right the wake gets bigger. Worth the $0.99 buy it.

… But why would you not support BOTH landscape orientations?

Just learning but already see that this is just what we were looking for: a realistic sailing/boating game with natural sounds. Graphics are fantastic and it’s lots of fun. One thing–the wind sound is a bit loud and kind of annoying. Highly recommend!

Wonderful game. We love the great physics and great controls and realism. We too wish there were more levels, different ships to choose from, and an exploring mode. All together a great mobile game though.

Sort of. It’s a good basis. The controls are easy to use and the wind in the sails is fairly accurate feeling. Could really use more levels or a free sailing mode. Other than that, for the price it satiates the need to sail in winter.

You should be able to do free rides and have more boat options and like another person said like you could enter places but overall it is a great game.

We are a sailing instructor and we have been extremely impressed with the quality of the simulation and the game! Excellent!

You need to add like entering the cabin and different styles of boats and bigger sizes.

It’s a great game if you enjoy recreational sailing and or want to get a basic idea on how it works. But we found it a bit dissatisfying if your into yacht races because the boats do not have a jib or spinnaker nether does it use the 2 way floating marks but rather one way gates. Great start but could use improvement. Personally we would love it if there where more boats to chose from especially larger ones with a jib. A plus over other apps we’ve seen-the ability to furl your sail in heavy conditions, the amazing graphics and a great toutorial!

Physics and graphics and controls are all good, but we expected something closer to Virtual Sailor by Hangsim (on PC), which is more open world sailing. As it is though, you are confined to small race events and courses.

Love the program except the camera perspective changes at the worse times and then we are stuck trying to fix it. Ultimately losing precious points earned in previous games. The new update hasn’t helped.

The title says it all. It’s ok but we would say buy a different one. We got bored with it after 10 min.

We enjoy the game so far…. BUT everytime we work through the training and start doing races…. It won’t remember and give us credit…. So next time we want to play we have to totally start from scratch.

Just purchased and first thing that pops up is a note saying future versions of iOS will not run it unless developer updates.

We like the wind physics and how you can capsize if not careful. We would like to see some different size sailboats even if they are more complicated in real life. We would love to see some old sailing ships on the open sea… Not that we want to shoot pirates but just having fun sailing a huge ship of the line in some huge rollers! Maybe a few more tabs to control some of the other sails on bigger ships. Physics like this game have on a grander scale would be very welcome! Thanks.

We personally have done many regattas myself and we have to say this is one of the most accurate apps we’ve ever purchase. We’ve capsized many times and we know when ur doing it right and that sir is right.

This is a fun sailing simulator. We would love to see some different boats to sail, as well as have the option to just do some free sailing, not around a course. Not sure why the screen sometimes tilts at such a sharp angle. Graphics are very nice, and smooth. The 3-D option is pretty cool! Loads of fun for three bucks.
