Community Insight:
Great for daily Go problems. We think its an Apple thing, but we wish the game mode notification wouldnt pop up every time you start the app.
We love solving it every morning. Great app.
The app is good but it sometimes thinks easy problems are hard or hard problems are easy. Today for example the easy daily problems were harder than both medium and one of the hard ones.
Very good go app. It would be able to quickly train your life and death skills. Other than that it trains your tsumego and tesuji skills.
Great way to learn life or death as a beginner.
Clean and lightweight app. No bloat or pushy pay-to-play features, and we really like that it lets you play out scenarios after you've solved or failed a puzzle to figure out why.
We are just starting to learn this game, but we wish they would add an explanation when you get a move wrong.
We very much agree with goodtutors review. We like the daily problems and the right or wrong feedback. The app is very clean and an appealing space to solve problems. However, it would be so very nice if there was some sort of feedback on why a problem reaches the solved state. We do think the app is useful as is to learn patterns in the game. It does enable the user to learn to recognize given patterns and associated responses. We also like that additional possible actions are considered. Each problem is designed to lead you down the best path, but you can take alternative actions that help the user understand possible outcomes.
Nice enough interface, plenty of puzzles, barebones. Agree with other reviews that we could use a little more than a correct sometimes, e.g. When the answer is seki: Im usually pretty sure its supposed to be seki, but it would be nice to get a confirmation. Or your solution is seki, but its possible to live/kill.
We dont know if anyone else has this problem but some of the problems that appear on the new problems page are incorrect. When we figure out the problem such that it says solved, we would continue with white and we dont see a way for the problem to be solved for black. Not sure what thats about, and pretty annoying.
Idiotic app says actual checkmate moves are "wrong". Never explains why. So stupid.
Starting out with easy problems and ending with the pair of hard ones is a nice way to start the day. We try to solve all 6 every day. Apparently this app has been around for some time. We just started using it and we like it. For the brave who want to practice solving problems with a clock try BadukPop (more expensive).
We have purchased all extended problems, and spend our time waiting for classes to start by playing through the progressive difficulty mode. Our Go skills have increased tremendously and it teaches to predict your opponents moves. We definitely recommend this app for anyone learning to play Go and veterans alike, though Im no professional ourselves yet so dont take the professional part to full heart.
This Go app allows us to practice and hone our skills for the game and we love it.
The daily problems and challenges actually really help illustrate the techniques of Baduk and how they can apply to your games! Covid really got to us.
Ive been playing Go since we were a young kid, and now Im picking it up again as an adult. This app is great for us to relearn shapes and strategies that we didnt grasp as a 9 year old, and the progress function is so great to figure out larger scale problems and work to see progress in our game long term.
We love this app. But android users can turn on labels for board coordinates. This hinders analysis of the puzzles and discussions with other enthusiasts. The interface is otherwise great, and the puzzles at different levels are excellent and nicely sorted. Occasionally it isnt clear why a solution is solved, especially when seki or draw is the goal. But otherwise the app is a delight.
Go puzzles are great but just too few.
And we will add that if the app explained WHY the move is right or wrong, it would be priceless. Go has not been easy for us to learn in spite of a decent proficiency at chess. Explanations would help us improve significantly.
Great app with great problems and accurate solutions AND variations. Our one issue is that the progress mode tends to pull from a surprisingly limited selection of problems in those available. We.e., if we select all the available problem sets for progress mode, we really only tend to see a subset of what we select. If that could be fixed, we would rerate to 5 stars.
Overall, this is a great app. We were recently introduced to Go, and this is a great way to practice. We appreciate the app includes multiple ways that a player can approach the problem. The app would get five stars, if it included a little information about the principles of Go and why one solution is correct and the other solutions are not. Now that we have done some more research into basic Go principles, we are able to get a lot more out of the practice problems. Overall, great app! Thank you.
This is a great way to get the gears turning on GO every day. We wish there was something explanatory about why is says certain moves are wrong or right or solved, but for free its a good base.
Had to wiki the rules of the game so you must already know how to play to use the app. Im not understanding the solutions yet. Otherwise the app seems to help improve your strategies and game play.
Great library of problems, good UI. Would be better if they programmed it to play out all variations to show the proper lines.
Should Explain the basic rules of go.
We like the daily puzzles but only 150 starting puzzles isnt enough.
We do not understand whe question button. When you do a problem, you press the question button so it will give you a hitn, then a red dot appears on a point, but when you press the dot it says wrong.
For a free app that provides daily baduk (go) puzzles, this isnt bad. But a few things. If youre not already familiar with the rules of baduk, then this wont be for you as theres no explanations on how to solve the puzzles or why youre wrong. Second, all too often Im given a puzzle that has more than one solution, but the app will only consider one correct. Third, often times the correct solution requires the opponent to make specific moves that dont make much sense. And forth, sometimes the solution the game says is correct is not a solution at all. Our stones are still unsettled and can become dead depending on the next move your opponent makes. This, this app assumes youll be playing morons. But, not all the practices are bad, Id say only 1 out of 5 actually has the above issues. And did we mention its free with no ads? So, 3 stars for us.
We have the paid version on Android but with no account system we cant even load our purchase on iOS.
NO idea how this is supposed to work. Wrong move. Solved. Huh? No explanation or even instructions on how to use the app that we could find.
We appreciate the app, but it is not ideal for learners like ourselves. There is no explanation to WHY a move is right or wrong.
No explanations or tutorials, frequent pop-ups demanding reviews.
It has potential to be a good app, but the instructions are pretty much non-existent and the easy level is considered difficult by our friend who has been playing for quite a while.
We love problem solving games. However this game doesnt have the simplest directions of how to play.
We have no idea how to play this. Im glad this is for 4+ years because we cant figure it out.
We dont learn Im simply satisfying the sequences that the game wants if after we get it all right, we play it out and cant find a winning scenario.
We wish it helped us understand why or why not a move is correct. You must learn how to play elsewhere, the app does not explain.
We dont understand how this app improves your go game. The puzzles are solved by trial and error and we rarely understand what the objective of any given puzzle is. Am we trying to capture a string? Prevent eye formation? Occasionally the "solution" to a puzzle doesnt appear to be advantageous at all.
First of all how do we play? This is weird second if you can play with your family how? Third this is confusing and can you say instead of saying wrong can you say nice try? Because maybe you are new and you dont get it? This app is a money grabber you have to pay to get. More levels and there is only like 6 levels for free! Lol.
The problems are very vague and theres no explanation as to what solved means. While Im sure some could find enjoyment out of this app, we think simply playing go matches would be a better way to advance ones skills.
Maybe Im too new to the game but we do understand the rules and this app has no dialogue box to give hints or reasoning in words as to why one move is superior to another. It maybe more useful for higher skilled players but for us it wasnt very helpful. Ill come back and try the app again after a bit more practice.
We purchased extra problems and they never appeared. The restore purchase button does not work. The app has not been updated in years so maybe the developer has abandoned it.
No explanation on how to use the app, and what the info supplied means. Also no explanation on why a move was right or wrong. Not recommended for a beginner like us.
Basically only giving this one star because the app keeps asking us every-single-day to review it. Fine. You get one star for annoying us.
Whatever move we make, its either wrong or theres no response. We dont know what Im doing right or why what Im doing is wrong. This is terrible for beginners.
Would have preferedd to sort this out via email, but alas have not been receiving responses for weeks now.
Thats all Itll tell you when you Make a wrong move and then if you make a correct move all it does is allow you to keep going. It doesnt tell you what you did wrong, doesnt tell you what the correct move was or why it was correct. You just literally have to keep guessing, makes no sense. Im not able to learn anything! No explanation! No help! Oh dont bother pressing the ? In the bottom right corner because its just there for show leads nowhere. Waste. Of. Time.
This app should know that Im playing on an iPad. An iPad with a keyboard making it landscape view, not portrait view. Impossible to play this game on iPad. Please fix orientation.
Many cool problems we recommend this app for anyone learning go.
This is a good app for learning, for sure. Better app for playing with friends and real people is gameofgo.app.
