A Glimpse into WazHack

Dungeon time stops when you do: smite monsters cleverly, not by mashing buttons!

With over 350 different types of items to be found, you will keep finding novel solutions to battling over 170 different types of monsters that you will face on your journey! You have time to think, but this is no puzzler – you will have to fight your adrenaline and use your sword or staff as much as your inventory.

The procedurally-generated dungeon and vast array of possible items gives immense replay value. Some games you’ll find a good weapon early, other times you’ll rely on wands or potions, or some combination. Sometimes in sheer desperation you’ll read a random unidentified scroll… will it be a scroll of fire that incinerates your clothes? Will it be a blessed scroll of teleportation for the ultimate escape?

If you have ever played NetHack, DCSS, etc, this game will show you a whole new form of the roguelike genre.

When you get good enough to survive to 300 feet, you will be asked to upgrade your character to access the full dungeon. This is a one-off purchase for each type of character (for example, the sorcerer and sorceress are a single type – Evil Mages). The whole game can be played with any character – you only need to purchase your favourite character(s). This can also be seen/purchased in advance under Options/Store.

Upgraded to a new device or iOS version? Just use the "Recover" button in Options/Store to get your character classes back.

Could we get controller support?

Also called Rogue-like game by younger people. The game has been updated from time to time and you can try different characters to experience variations of the game. There are some helpful tips on the wiki for this game. We have played many many times and won a few times. Fun at Easter time for the Easter eggs one finds. It shouldnt take long to figure out if this game is for you.

This game has the most replayability of any game we have ever played. We had finished the game 20 times. But with the new mods, we started playing again and have finished it 20 times again. But we have still only finished with 12 characters (and still not several of the original 16).

The game is okay, but pretty much impossible. There are minor glitches, like pets getting stuck on ladders, and Fenrir getting stuck in doorways. Even the glitches wouldnt be bad if the game wasnt so damned impossible. How about a version of the game that ISNT impossible? Maybe a variable difficulty? An impossible game is no fun!

Love the game but cant really play it on our iPhone 13 because some menu items, such as when you open the inventory, on the left side are obscured by the black iPhone 13 cutout.

We have been playing this game for years. We beat it dozens of times and still come back to it. We play it at the doctor’s office. We use it as a palate cleanser in between epic open world pc games. We recently got a new ipad and noticed that this game was having bad lag, like it was poorly optimized for new devices. So imagine our delight when we saw waz actually did an update. The game runs super smooth now. However, some of the graphics looked weird. Like the lighting was all fuzzy, but then we realized that the brightness was set to maximum in options. When we turned down the brightness, everything looked normal again. Some graphics have been changed too, like a dust cloud looks like a gas cloud now and fire elementals and water elementals barely show up against the background. We see a new menu command to create custom command shortcuts which is a nice addition. We do have some complaint first is that the option to reorganize our spell list seems to have been romoved. We can’t imagine why. We can no longer delete spells we have forgotten and we can no longer sort the spells list to put our most used spells at the top and it is now really annoying to scroll down the list past forgotten spells to get to the ones we want to cast. Also, the touch controls are still finicky. Sometimes when we tap high to make our character jump. Our character will jump and then jump again and then keep jumping automatically 7 or 8 times and miss a lot of turns and if there is a monster there, it gets 10 attacks or more against us before we’re able to respond. This is unacceptable in a roguelike game where every turn matters tactically. Also, the issue where we are unable to attack certain creatures like ants and rats while on a ladder is still there. Also it’s annoying that movement gets disabled if an enemy is in melee range. We’re not allowed to run away because the tap movement stops working so we’re pinned down, forced to fight to the death. This is not a mechanic in the pc version. Also, certain achievements are impossible to achieve, especially the one to "kill every monster in the game at least once", since certain monsters don’t even exist, like the hill orc. Also summoning the "hacker" doesn’t work on the ipad version. It works on pc, but not on ipad. It just says "there is no such thing that exists"

Its a fantastic rpg, great inventory management, interesting and easy controls to use once youre comfortable with them, and we like the approach it takes to magic very much which is something we find a lot of rpgs struggle to do well. The dungeons are very long and there are many classes to choose from throughout the many runs you will be making in this very rogue like game. The one downside is we would really like for there to be some form of bundle for purchasing all the classes together at a possibly cheaper price instead of having to buy each separate class.

Had this game for ten years now, and the latest update is terrible, at least on an Ipad. Waz took away the ability to rearrange your spell list, getting a pet to do anything is a repeating myriad of clicks because you cant rearrange the UI. The new quest is no great shakes. Its like the new version had no beta testing on the Ipad. If you have lighting issues move it down to like -6, which makes no sense but helps. Give us the option to use the previous version, you can keep this one. We would have sent this direct to the developer but he took that link out of the options menu.

WazHack 1.3 was one of the best games on iOS. Fun, deep, maddeningly difficult, and immersive. Our kids and we spent hours at a time on it and we played it off and on for years. The recent update to 1.4 kills the game due to the new graphics engine. Everything is blurry and slower now, even on fairly new devices. Characters are barely visible on the screen. Its an ugly mess. Never before have we seen an amazing game become almost unplayable overnight.

The worst inventory management in a user-accessible program. Managing pets and items is terrible. Hey loo, was making an improved sequel too hard? Abandonware as the dev went on to make toddler puzzle games.

This game is amazing but it doesn’t get the support it deserves. We love playing as the hunter and using beast mastery to get a massive army.

This is a fantastic game. We highly recommend it. We were weary at first but as we played it we became more and more impressed. We love how hard it is (people here talking about saves can go play mario) and the loot is surprisingly satisfying. This is one of the best roguelikes we’ve played from the App Store, not to mention of the most unique takes on our favorite genre! Thanks Waz, whoever you are!

We have two things to say. Number one this is the hardest game we have ever played number two we this game is our Minecraft 2! It is awesome it is replay-able and it never gets old. We have a question for the developer. We want to know if it would be possible to add voice commands into the gameplay? So theres like a sound button like the same one Im using right now. But then the commands are like open items or equip this item or you can create some sort of voice command that would make the game a whole lot faster and easier just with simple basic commands. Thank you for creating a great game!

It’s hard, but that makes it all the more satisfying when you finally beat it. You will die the first 20 runs or so before you make it a third of the way, and then you’ll die another 20 or so times trying to get to the end. Then you’ll get the amulet you need to win the game and on your way up to the surface you’ll say "why don’t we try to beat that Roman place that was so hard earlier" and die again. But every time you die you will learn something new, or have old knowledge that you ignored be seared more permanently into your mind, resulting after many deaths in a fulfilled, confident you. Great game, worth buying the characters. One tip: charisma is THE MOST IMPORTANT STAT. GL HF!

For fans of rouge likes this game is at the top of our list. Now it is an incredibly hard game but there is a lot of skill involved as well as chance. We have probably put over 500 hours in this game between iOS and PC and have only won probably about 8 times, but it is a great feeling and overall the game is very fun and addictive. We would recommend all rouge fans give this one a try.

Great game with nearly endless playability, and very worth paying $0.99 for a few pairs of characters. – Great difficulty, and very deep systems that interplay – You always stumble upon something new, no two playthroughs are alike – Colorful, exciting, and easy to learn and grow your skills. We highly recommend this game to anyone looking for an exciting dungeon crawler with exciting gameplay, and tons of content.

… And figure we owe Waz at LEAST a dollar. We’ll buy more out of gratitude. We love the updated Rogue-style game. Graphics are crisp, there’s a good sense of humor hidden throughout (the hats!) and YES it’s hard and random. If you don’t know Rogue, let us clear it up: you never know if a potion will save you or kill you until you drink it. That’s the beauty of it. Like life. And chocolates. Or even blind dates. True to the original, just as the cackle of success starts to build in your throat, you are teleported to a lvl 7 demon… Oh, victory, why do you slip through our grasp so often! It’s like some kind of masochistic religion. Idk. But we’re grateful for the little "@" map in the corner. You don’t let go of nostalgia.

Very hard but worth it Took us a long time to learn to play well But still easy to die.

Updating our review since the dev fixed the issues we had with it. Game plays very smoothly and we love the rogueness of it. Like the fact that there is much to discover from the game on our own. UI is minimal but once you play for a while, it all falls into place.

This game is amazing. We purchased all of the characters (the only micro transaction in the game). In total, we think we paid around 10 dollars. We would have gladly paid 20 for the quality of this game. Thank you so much for bringing Wazhack to iOS.

We’ve played this game in all its incarnations: rogue, Angband, NetHack, etc. This is the same game, now with great 3D graphics and easy to play on a tablet! We are still addicted and have deleted all the other games on our tablet!

We’ve had this game for a few years now. We have never once deleted from our phone or iPad. Its in our opinion the best dungeon crawler on the platform. Its challenging but when you get that win. Its actually feels like you accomplish something. We cant advise this game more. If we were to describe this game it would be chess mixed with DnD. Its worth any time you put into it.

Keeps you coming back for more.

This has been our favourite game for so many years. We’ve never even made it to the bottom of the dungeon but we don’t care, we don’t get bored of this game easily.

Still a Great game, keep up the good work Waz!

We love this game to death! The only problem we had with it were the graphics, but honestly, who the hell cares? It’s seriously amazing. We have so much fun. There’s so many character options to play as and there are so many items you can find. It starts out hard at first, but the more you play, the better you get. We love it!

It’s such a great implementation of a roguelike. We are stunned this isn’t more popular both in and out of the roguelike community.

We remember ye olde net hack dos based version. This is a whole ton of fun challenge and frustration all at once. Now with great graphics multiple characters and heaps of items this app has everything needed for immense replay ability. Its just addictive fun!

People consistently complain about the price lock but we don’t think it matters, as long as Waz is updating this masterpiece nothing could go wrong.

We love how hard this game is.. We’ve played off and on (mostly off) for ten years and only beat it once.. We beat it when we played on our computer through Steam. So if youre having trouble playing on your phone, try Steam because you can have slightly better graphics, and that alone may help you do better, but your also more efficient navigating your inventory. This will save frustrations, and youll actually utilize your inventory more which is the key to winning. The reason for this review, and we cant imagine Waz reads these, but something missing from this game is a turn around action button. Especially when youre playing a hunter, its difficult to turn around and gain line of sight with your bow when enemies are attacking. Cool.

This is definitely the best game to have for mobile no joke. We watched a few people on YouTube do a series of this game and the game is honestly huge with everything in it so we instantly downloaded the game and bought all the classes before even playing that’s how much we knew the game would be worth it. This game is a huge challenge and it took some people around 100 hours and even over to finally beat it so that’s saying something and they continue to play it. This game is definitely way to cheap we wish there were more things to spend real money on to help the developer out. If this game never gets updated again we actually won’t be mad cause this game is massive. Thanks for making this amazing game :)

This game is a lot of fun. You travel to the bottom of a deep dungeon in search of an amulet and then you have to make it out alive. Easier said than done. Be ready to die a lot (honestly it can be harder than dark souls at times) challenging, fun, and rewarding. You can run around feeling like a god, and then die in an instant because you made a mistake. It has to be said that we hope you dont plan on playing a spell caster tho.. The dungeon is randomly generated so its never the same. Every time we play as a class that cant cast spells we find about 3-4 spell books within the first 2-400 feet of the dungeon. But every time we play as a class that can use spells we almost never find a spell book. This makes getting your early level ups incredibly annoying at times as a spell caster. We just died 800 feet into the dungeon on our wizard, we found our first spell book at 700 feet, and it was wizard lock… A spell used to lock doors and utterly useless. We wish theyd patch the game making you guaranteed to find at least one offensive spell within the first 300 feet. All in all its a fun game that keeps you coming back to try again. Even if you do pull your hair out trying to play a mage.

We should mention we got into the original Rogue on a friend’s 8088 DOS box back in the 80s. Waz blends classic Rogue with modern visuals (the animations aren’t the BEST, but they’re more than good enough to keep you entertained and engaged), dark humor, and loads of originality. This game offers a blend of variety and randomness that makes for endless replayabilityit’s also really difficult! Just like the classics it pays homage to, don’t expect to get far without practice, strategy, and a good dose of luck. We’re convinced the negative reviews were written by folks who didn’t give the game a fair chance or simply don’t enjoy (or aren’t good at) the genre. Those who do will inevitably find themselves going back for "just ONE more try"… Over and over again.

You could make more money by selling ‘saves’ in this game to help it not be so frustrating.

We’ve played many roguelikes over the years – we get the whole permadeath thing. But this one is simply too hard and unforgiving to be very enjoyable at this point. This game desperately needs some balancing – it makes slash ’em look easy. We say pass on this joke. Get Pathos instead.

Completely relays on the random chance that you KEEP getting good drops as you keep going further down…. You don’t. **** u.

This game is not worth the extra money for the characters. There are a ton of bugs and it honestly gets stale after the bee queen.

Update: Apparently we were quite a bit wrong about this game being in early days. The lone update did not add much other than bugs. Among other things, reflection, a pretty critical gameplay mechanic, is broken. We love how hard this game is, but even minor bugs are amplified by that amount of difficulty into an tantalizingly close to playable mess. We would caution against anyone paying for this game until a subsequent update. Old Review: Incredibly well done adaptation/reinterpretation of Nethack. After ascending each type of character, however, we don’t find it to have the same replay value of its ancestor. Truth be told, it was getting a little monotonous even before that, but we think/hope this game is in early days, and after spending every dollar we could on it ($8), we believe it to have been a hell of a steal. I’d have easily paid double and still found it a bargain for the enjoyment we received. Well done Waz!

Okay. Let’s start with this. You. Will. Die. A lot. If you aren’t okay with this, don’t download this game and then give it 1 star cause you aren’t willing to try a fun, hard game more than once or twice. Okay. Now for the serious gamers. This game is a lot of fun. It does have a bit of a chance element to it and can be highly unpredictable. However, if you use the wiki to help you get started, this game can be lots of fun. We’ve had it for about two years and have only beaten the game a few times (maybe 5 times.) But that’s the great part. It’s such a hard challenge that it is super rewarding to actually finish and win. So. Good luck. And have fun!

Good game but very unbalanced with the characters (at least when you begin).

For some reason, when we load up the game. The walls are blacker than Mr. PoPo and we can’t see anything.

However, with the last up date, they made it purely impossible. There is no chance to make it very far. This is an game that is unbeatable. There are some bugs, like using wands to target enemies that don’t even have the option of hitting them. So, you wast the charge for nothing. Not to say al the crazy things that never should be in an dungeon. Fountains everywhere that are hard to pass bye without the popup. Oh, and they made thing even harder, and moved up the tougher mobs to kill you.

The most recent upgrade is terrible. Background colors are too dark to see and it makes to unplayable. Needs updating ASAP.

We’ve been playing NetHack/Rogue for almost 20 years now. It’s an endless source of fun/challenge, but we have never seen any "version" that outclasses the old ASCII-style editions–until now.

It really is the best game period. All new features make it harder than before. You die faster. But it is fun dying over and over again.

Devs we need your help we got the barbarian and vandal and the good witches packs but after the new update it says we need to buy them again we try the recovery button it didn’t work.

First off, we would like to say that we love this game. We forked over a dollar for the wizard to get past 300 feet. However, with the recent update adding belief systems, that purchase has been reset, without a refund. Enough said.
