“it works surprisingly well on touchscreens”

  • Pocket Gamer

“As you would expect from DotEmu, this port is basically perfect from a technical standpoint. […] The actual gameplay is generally intact, however, and that means Ys Chronicles 1 is a must-have for any mobile RPG fan. It’s a sheer joy to play, full of a kind of upbeat excitement that doesn’t come around all that often. ”

Ys is an action-packed, heroic fantasy JRPG game that immerses you in a beautiful Japanese artistic universe. Originally released on PC and PSP in the 2000s, this remake of the famous franchise’s first episode, titled " Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen", returns in a mobile version especially adapted for touch gameplay.

In Ys, you play as Adol Christin, an adventurous young swordsman. Early in the story, you find yourself on a mysterious beach in Esteria, a kingdom whose cities are besieged by hordes of demoniac creatures. Esteria’s people are depending on you to defeat the demons and free the kingdom. To accomplish your goal, you must find six sacred books containing the history of the ancient land of Ys; books which will also provide you with the knowledge to restore peace. Throughout the game, you’ll gain experience and strength by discovering enchanted weapons and artifacts. Become a mighty knight and destroy your enemies!

Ys possesses a rich and poetic atmosphere with beautiful artistic direction, an incredible soundtrack and a deep story. Ys also stands out thanks to its unique fight mode: you must pounce on enemies to attack them ("BUMP" system). Perfectly adapted to touch devices, this one-touch combat system makes the game even more exciting and enjoyable.

Find out what gamers are saying about Ys Chronicles 1:

We highly recommend this game and especially part 2 to all Zelda fans.

Controls feel great. We like that they upped the run speed in this one. Story great also! This and Lunar Silver Star Story are some of our favorites :)

Plays great. Glad it supports controllers.

Solid port of the remastered Ys. Music is beautiful as always in and Ys game. No voices though which felt like a step backward after having them in the Turbografx-CD version.

We wasn’t really sure what to expect when we purchased this. The only reason we did is because Chronicles 2 was released and our RPG friends have been pushing us to get into Ys for years now… And this happened to be on sale. It is kinda strange that it took us this long to grab it, as we love all of DotEmu’s ports, but around the time it came to the AppStore, we were falling out of RPGs and getting more into Roguelikes and Tactical RPGs. Anyway, once you get the whole ‘bumping’ attack mechanics down (I’d recommend watching a few YT vids if you’re having trouble – we also clicked with it more when we removed the Free movement and set it at 8 directions), the game really seems to open up (while still remaining streamlined for an RPG) – and it’s carried over fantastically into the awesome boss fights. Yes, it’s short – for an RPG – around 10 hours – but that’s kind of what finally made us buy the game (aside from the sale) – knowing we’ll be able to play and beat the game within a week instead of dumping months of our life into yet another game. Anyway, we recommend this one… It’s great.

We’ve never Played YS on any other system, but we’ve heard about it before and we’ve always wanted to try it. It’s a lot of fun so far. No disappointed.

Can you please add a map for both ys chronicles 1&2 and an auto save button? This would make it easier to play this game. Please consider this and make new version with these features.

We have encountered the, "door fails to open after killing boss mumber 1" bug, so incapable of moving forward. Great game, seeming to be a terrible port. EDIT To fix this bug you have to save your game, then force close the app and restart.

Usually porting retro games to iOS is a waste of time. Very few control well with a touch interface. We’ve been disappointed on more than one occasion, but this game actually controls really well on our iPhone! We’ve been enjoying ys 1 very much and we honestly recommend this to any retro gaming fans on the go.

Playing with Gamevice makes it so much sweeter. Heavenly even.

The first time we played this was back on the turbografx. We loved it back then and its every bit as enjoyable on iOS. We miss the voiceover work, but it still works. If you’ve never played an YS game, this is a great place to start. Go grab it.

-1 star for lack of turbografx/pc engine soundtrack. Need that classic darm tower!!!

Ys VIII is our favorite switch game, even over Zelda BoW. Id Figure we should try chronicles 1 & 2. Its like a fast pace Link to the Past. Action RPG. The bump mechanic is so fun and story pretty interesting. Love how you heal standing in tall grass. Beautiful 16 bit graphics. Then we got to the first shrine boss. Using the touch screen is near impossible to beat the boss. So we invested in an 8bitdo controller and clip, yeah its still hella difficult. Watched a few YouTube videos to see it was NOT just us. We are in normal difficulty and am considering easy. But not too frustrated yet.

Game is enjoyable and fun until you get to the boss in the abandoned mines. Then you have to end it there. Poor controls and a terrible mechanic make it impossible to win. We’ve spent an hour trying to kill this thing. Max level, all silver equipment, oh and the one time we might actually want to use a healing potion, we cant. Cool game, too bad this boss is terrible and the controls are basically beyond useless.

El juego esta bien.. Pero le falta la opcin de poder guardar tus partidas en icloud… Algo muy importante hoy en dia…

The good: kinda like a Zelda game, nice storyline, and fun to play. The bad: the direction button is awful( wont let you go to where you want to go freely, had to keep forcing it, feels like a broken joy stick from them arcade days). Dungeon shouldnt have a level restriction, dont like to grind to reach the level before we can go in a dungeon, bored us out. 3 stars for effort. Hopefully these issues are address on part 2.

We have played – and beaten – this game on many systems, most notably the TurboDuo and Famicom. We were thrilled to see that the DS versionhas been ported over to iOS, because we like the idea of being able to take our favorite games with us wherever we go. And Ys 1/2 are definitely among our very favorites. However, we are very disappointed with the control aspect of the game, we have played many RPGs on our iPad/iPhone – some of the "action JRPGs" like Ys, and they all used a fixed control pad which worked beautifully. This game, however, uses a crazy "the pad is wherever your fingers are" control system, which leads to less ability to control your character movements. We did just figure out that to run, we just push an imaginary joypad button on the right while controlling our motion on the left… There was a cryptic diagram early on that we believe explained this, but we’re not the most clever person around and we need it explained outright. We are just getting started but don’t think we will have a chance at beating some of the bosses with this inferior control system. Come on, DotEmu – how difficult would it be to implement an option to turn on a fixed control pad like the Kemco RPGs use? It works great with those games. Otherwise, this is a faithful port of the DS version, and we are still glad to have it on our phone. We will hold off on playing it more, though, with hopes that a fixed joypad option is added… Because we are getting motion sickness with the current control system.

Didn’t like the combat system. Fighting should evolve more then running into the enemy at the right angle.

There are innumerable versions of the excellent Ys 1. This one is based on the PC/PSP release, but for some reason has a new translation. Unfortunately, its awful. We recommend getting this on PC (GOG and Steam have it). Just about any not-ancient machine should be able to run it.

Great game import! Bug report: In the shrine, after beating the first boss, which is a ghost boss protected by three rows of poisonous air, there supposed to be a hole appearing in the wall for exit but it didn’t happen. We were stuck in the chamber and the only thing we can do is load. We cannot open items or stats. We were able to move the figure though. Please fix! Thanks!

We’ve been gaming since the early 80’s. Between arcades, consoles, handhelds, portables, PC and mobile platforms, we’ve played (played NOT owned) over 1,500 titles. This port of this classic title is an extremely solid game, which falls apart at the very end. The damning issue stems from a lack of gameplay balancing. More specifically, the final boss is unbeatable. The playing field is 25% smaller than the areas where you fight the other bosses. Every time you land a blow on Dark Facht, a small portion of the field falls away. If you don’t move fast enough after scoring a hit, you fall through that hole and die. At any rate, you end up reducing the playable area to one that barely leaves enough room to be maneuvered around. As this is happening, Dark Facht’s zipping around the entirety of the screen like a ping pong ball. This includes the border areas you can’t reach. While trying to mount an offense, you’re also being assailed by multiple, simultaneous fireballs that explode in all eight directions. So you’re constantly taking damage. You don’t have the option of using any restorative items. Any status buffs your equipment gives you are nullified. To be fair, that’s how it is with all the boss encounters here. However, that doesn’t mean it’s fair or even sensible. We’ve come across bosses like this before, in other games. The only way to beat them is with a cheat. But, when you do that, it ends up crashing/freezing the game as you weren’t supposed to be able to beat them. We don’t think that’s the case here. The devs desperately need to roll up their sleeves and actually do some gameplay balancing to alleviate this issue.

We beat the shrine boss, but then we are just stuck in the room and can’t do anything.

Love Ys, despise these kinds of ports and this game in particular. This game is great on the platform it was originally formatted for (ones with directional pads and buttons), on iOS you have to drag your finger around the screen and/or mash parts of said all the while trying not to completely obliterate you field of view (which is both insanely easy to do and will likely result in getting murdered by bosses over and over again (to the point of rage)). Summary, this game should of been left to the PSP, the shameless cash grab that is the mobile port is garbage.

We played this way back on the old TurboGraphics 16. I’d been wanting to play it again and figured what they hell it on iOS. Whoever ported this didn’t even try to rebalance it for mobile. On Normal difficulty, some of the bosses are nearly impossible and the end boss is just ridiculous. We remember what the game was like originally and this version needs some serious work. Don’t buy unless you like frustration. Otherwise it’s great. Sad they totally messed up the game by not bothering to balance the bosses as per the new controls.

We tried the normal mode. It is a nightmare, the Batman . We hate this game and we want our money back.

We never played the game with worse control than this game. Do you think this game’s controller is better r even than pc or console version? Adol doesn’t seem to go direction that we want to. You’re not worthy even 1 star. And to talk about YS 2, who translated Korean? Google? Are you kidding???

Played this on iPhone SE. There is a vampire boss that requires extremely fine control to defeat, and the touch control is abysmal. Only buy this if you want to play half a game and quit.

Entirely maxed stats and items, boss is too stupidly hard. Literally ruins the entire game, which is overall casual. Turn it down from 11..

We remembered that we first played YS2 with our friend around 11 years old. We felt so amazed by its story background and fantasitc controlling setup at that time. YS is our favorite ARPG game without doubt, but we don’t have opportunity to play YS1 until we found dotemu transplanted this classic game into iOS today. We want to regain our childhood memories and experienced that affects again. Besides, we would unconditionaly support the game in any way and wish Falcom won’t go bankrupt so quickly and could be able to continue to bring more classic stories in YS, even if it just keeps transplanting old YS series into different game platforms.

We absolutely love this game. It was a childhood favorite and we love that we can play it again. PLEASE make Chronological 2 available. We need to have the follow up which was better than the first and gave good closure. Thanks for making this game available. Now if only we can get Bonk on the iPhone.

Fun little adventure. Wish there was map to find your location, but the frequent signs help and we guess part of the fun is to figure things out for yourself.

We’re playing this game Easy level but it is not easy to play. We’re stuck with Abandoned ours boss now because it is not easy to control Adol. Actually this is not a first time for us to play YS and we enjoyed this game in PC before. Keyboard was much easy to control so we hope the game company to change difficulty easier considering touch screen is not good to play this speedy game. As a old big fan of this YS this is great game to enjoy.

We love the visuals of this tough action game. Boss fights can be crazy hard but they are still enjoyable. Often we would not know where to go and had to consult a walkthrough. Unless you have played the game before we think you will need to do this. There were some major bugs/crashes but latest update has fixed them. Overall cool game and good port. Recommended if you like games like Wayward Souls!

Ys is an amazing series, but this version needs to be balanced for the floaty touch controls. As it stands the Bat boss in the mines is impossible to beat. Please patch this so that either he dishes out less damage or stays in a vulnerable state for longer.

Near the start of the game, there is a bat monster "boss". You can only hit it during a split second period when it it transforming. Then is sends a swarm of bats which kill you almost instantly. You have to hit it maybe 20 times to win. It is impossible to do. We tried for 30 minutes and couldn’t get more than 2 hits in. Your healing items don’t work. Your healing ring doesn’t work. You are not allowed to level up any more. We deleted the game out of frustration.

This is awesome… Bring out the rest of the series.

Let us just start off by saying this is the first Ys game we have ever played but it has always caught our attention. $5.00 is considered to be an insanely high amount of money for an app for us but we bought it because it’s a lot cheaper then the original game and we guess you can say we gambled. It was worth it!!!!! Trust us, get this game if you like rpg’s Amazing port, with 2 game modes, different soundtracks, force feedback for when you fight monsters and an amazing control output It has a bump system when you fight so you can change if you want your character to run or walk we choose run because if you use another finger (2 fingers) he walks, perfect for strategy and all around compatibility. Seems very large even though we’re not far into it. We’re not here to spoil anything just here to say it was worth $5.00 to us, our favorite game on our phone. Get it, amazing port and so far an amazing game we’re glad we started off on the first one. Many boxes of dialogue too for more hours of fun!

Please support a underrated classic!

We admit,it took some time to get use to controls,I had to change our normal speed from run to walk and the fighting methods are a little tricky but once we got use to it,it turned out a great game. A real masterpiece has been made.

We never played the Y’s series but after playing for 20 hours we can honestly say that it’s iOS port is truly worth the money we spent. It’s such a classic game that we don’t want to put it down. The musical scores make it 100X more amazing listening through our studio headphones. You will not be disappointed in this game if you like games like Chrono Cross and the like. Not saying it is exactly like them but a beautiful representation of how good an iOS port can be. Zenonia has nothing on this game .

A trip down memory lane, but better!

A perfect iOS version of an all time classic. A++

First Ys title we’ve ever played and we’re loving it! Bump system is way more fun than we thought it would be.

We were skeptical about how Ys we would play with touch controls, but it translates nicely. The "bump" battle system in Ys we (and Ys II) is well-suited for touch… We love the PC-88 version of these classic songs, but you won’t be disappointed by the rich, sumptuous "updated" songs, either. If you enjoy this game, you should absolutely play the TurboGrafx-CD port of Ys we & II (1989)… The game itself is solid, the soundtrack is phenomenal and the cinema scenes are still impressive, despite their age.

Another master system game! Please bring Golvellius back.

We’ve waited to play the original Ys until it came out on a convenient platform, and it doesn’t get more convenient than this. Auto saves so you never lose your place. We really like the control scheme but we would recommend setting it to 8 directions which seems to play a little less wonky.

Love this game is very addictive and fun to play. We have a little problem the controls are very difficult and we can’t battle the monsters very well. Please make a D-pad(attack button) like the other games. The rest is wow. Looking forward to seeing the sequel. Thanks for the attention.
