What Makes Choice of the Pirate Stand Out

Plunder ghost ships for cursed treasure! Battle the Crown Navy, sea monsters, and other bloodthirsty pirates on a quest to rival the Pirate King himself!

"Choice of the Pirate" is a fast-paced swashbuckler of an interactive novel by Alana Joli Abbott, author of "Choice of Kung Fu" and "Showdown at Willow Creek." Your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based—165,000 words, without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Rise from a deck-swabbing sailor to fleet commander over five years of piracy in the tropical paradise of the Lucayan Sea. Command the winds with magic, or board enemy ships with your cutlass in your teeth.

Will you play as male, female, or nonbinary? Find romance as gay, straight, bi, or poly, or pursue friendships and alliances instead? Will you join the Crown as a privateer and bring pirates to heel? Will you parley with the Pirate King to protect the Lucayan from the navy's rule? Or will you duel the Pirate King and claim his power for yourself?

Buckle yer swash and set sail for adventure!

• Develop your skills as a swashbuckler, sailor, diplomat, scoundrel, or weather-mage.
• Explore a chain of tropical islands where buried treasure and secret pirate camps are hidden.
• Face pirate curses, haunted ships, terrifying monsters, and the wrath of the sea herself.
• Spy for the Crown or become a double agent to support the Pirate King.
• Become a celebrated hero or a ruthless villain.
• Play as male, female, or nonbinary; gay, straight, bi, poly, or asexual.

This Adventure game offers engaging gameplay and regular updates for mobile players.

Community Insight:

This is a fantastic game, with lots of swashbuckling adventures and memorable characters. One bug: If we try to talk to Tinima at the Lobo Negro and she doesnt introduce herself (because she doesnt like us), her name in the relationships section of the stats page is a "?" for the rest of the game, even if we end up being good friends by the end of it! We also tried replaying through the game without talking to her at all at the Lobo Negro (since the last time was only our first playthrough), and Im missing her name here, too! Other than that, its a great game! Keep up the good work.

Easily our favorite game from you guys. Choices felt real and impactful while still managing to have a very compelling story. So many different story arcs that its definitely worth a few replays. Solid, solid work.

This is the first review we have ever whiten! And this is one the BEST game we have ever played! Sooooooo worth the five bucks! Please please please PLEASE make more of these.

There were so many feels in this game and it has a bit of replay ability as well. The epilogue was pretty cool but we feel like we could of done better we wonder if we can get a bit further than last time or if it is fixed to end where it did. Anyways… We need a pirates 2.

We absolutely adore this game! It's got so many choices and it's all so much fun to read through! The writing is top notch as well! All around great game! Would recommend.

We've had this game for a week now and we've played it every day. (we may be addicted…) if you love pirates you will love this game. Pirates and role play games our our favorite so we felt like this game was made for us. We love this game ~.

We really enjoyed reading and playing this story. It flowed really well in the characters are well developed. We also love when the epilogue with every ending has a different story to tell about each character.

One of our favorite in choice of games.

Amazing story telling to lose yourself in.

This is a good CoG interactive fiction game. We loved the setting, although the author could have done a better job with explaining terms in gameplay/story rather than an easy to ignore FAQ at the bottom of the stats page. Some of the consequences of our decisions didn't mesh with what we expected from the text at key points which left us a little annoyed. (we wanted to demonstrate our new powers, we didn't actually want to destroy the whole town, whoops!) Despite that, we still enjoyed this one and it's worth the price.

The game is a good one with quite a lot of options to choose from. Although we only played the entirety of it once, we felt like the choices you chose did affect your interactions with many of the characters in it. The only thing we sorta wish was that we could've stayed on the good sides of the two forces, or have the opposition be neutral to us at least. Aside from that, the game's an enjoyable one that we'll say is worth it's cost.

We love these games, we do feel like the games are a bit short but that is to be expected. Other wise we give it a perfect score of 5 out of 7.

Top notch writing and decision making. And pirates.

We LOVE the story line as well as the first rate inclusion of different genders and sexuality! Amazing game.

We've played our fair share of Choice of games. This one is outstanding. The diversity of options is ground breaking, and we wish that those character options were displayed in other games. We very much enjoyed the gameplay. Thank you for this wonderful game.

Ok so we like choose-your-adventure stories AND pirates, so we're a bit biased But we could not recommend this story more to anyone who asked. You can be asexual! You can be trans! You can be nonbinary! AND the story is a good one! This game is truly a gift to mankind.

We wish you could name your own ship, other then that, fantastic.

This is our first ever Choice Of game, and we loved it! It was a lot of fun and had really interesting choices that kept us on our toes and invested until the end. We will definitely play again to see where different choices lead. We also love the options for gender and romantic orientations.

This story was a good read and the choices very diverse. We've played it through several times to explore the different path and the story changes dramatically, just what we expect! Would recommend it to others definitely.

This was a really and intriguing game. We recommend it to all, especially those who enjoy reading and interactive stories.

We love it. We play it all the time and try for different endings. We get so lost in the story too! We're curious about the mermaids though and would love to see some of the more traditional variety get their own game. Keep creating because these are amazing.

This is one of the best games that has been published in some time. We have become very picky about choice games, and we enjoyed this one very much.

We had a lot of fun. Definitely worth the money. The story was a bit shorter than expected, but it was an awesome story nonetheless.

We are beyond happy that COG made a pirates story.. Greatly written and some pretty fine character development. Worth every penny.

Playable and delightful let's see more games like this.

This is one of our favorite Choice of Games stories since 'Romance' and if you liked that one you'll want another epic length portion of this one (or three). The premise and world are just so cool. Does it seem too short? Yes, but part of that is because it's so immersive a story. (SPOILER WARNING) we would seriously pay full price again to have a supplemented version with a more full version of the final battle– the setup for the big fight was really great- but then the fight itself was over much too quickly– still, the ending wrap up was done really well which (almost) made up for the short climax. We think it's unprecedented for a COG story to add "levels" after initial release, but this story is worth the attempt.

It should be noted that we're only just finished our first read through (hyper-magical, super rich pirate king over here). We enjoyed this. Despite finishing it in one sitting, we're realizing it had about a 3 hour read time or so, and we hit most of the events, we think. We will be replaying the other paths that we missed, since there's a whole other half of the story to see. One way or another, this really is a great game. The action is a bit fast, overall, and we really don't get how some people died their first run (seems strangely impossible to do, honestly). This is a simple, easy read. One that is well worth the cost AND worth replaying as well. We're off to go side with the crown this run. Wish us luck, we'll probably need it. =/.

Great game, we usually go into these games with a sense of caution, but we truly did enjoy this game and thought that it was really nicely done. The author does great work, and we look forward to seeing more of it in the future.

Although we died at the end of our first read, this is an amazing book. Far better than you would think and much better than a certain choice story that came out about pirates not to long ago. All choice writers should learn from this descriptive and entertaining read.

We thoroughly enjoy and play several of the "choice of" games… In truth, this is one of our favorites. It was well written, had diverse character development, a lot of adventure, and some great options. We would love to see a sequel of the same quality.

Good storyline, nice writing, stats that make sense and matter… Pirates (of course), Royal Navy, supernatural friends/enemies, fierce creatures, magic and more. The ending was great too– tied up loose ends and left us satisfied, but just open ended enough to warrant a sequel (which we hope will be made). Overall, great job! Definitely worth buying in our opinion.

We wish there was more!! It was exciting and terrific, a must read.

A great addition to the Choice of Games selection. Just finished one play through, and we're going in for seconds, and probably thirds.

This was a great game, the story is captivating and the characters are vivid. Very well written. It really did feel like an awesome pirate adventure. Choices were great as well. It's been a while since choice of games has released a game of this quality. Well worth the money.

When we bought the app, we were slightly worried because of the other reviews. Yes, some of the scenes do feel rushed, or have little bend in the choices. On the flip side; there are so many different outcomes for the ending. We feel we got our money's worth.

We liked this game, really we did. We liked it so much that we kept taking breaks to play it when we should have been studying for finals (which are only a day away…). The only thing is, sometimes we felt like it was a little rushed. Like, major events in the game lasted only a page or two, with maybe one choice determining the outcome. Also, we haven't gotten a chance to play the other routes (seeing as we're supposed to be studying) but the ending we got was really unsatisfying, especially considering how well we'd been doing in the game until we made one decision that got us killed. When we have more time, we're going to go back and play it again so that we can make a different decision in the end, hopefully resulting in a better outcome. We really did like it, we just wish it hadn't felt as rushed. It was definitely worth the money though, as it provided a good couple hours worth of entertainment.

We enjoyed the story but we felt that the ending was a bit rushed. Still we think it's worth getting.

There have been better games, and there have been worse ones. This is however worth your money.

We wouldn't particularly recommend it… It lasts perhaps two hours and the choices are very limited. We felt very underwhelmed with the rushed plot in general and we couldn't connect with any of the characters. People may like this game but we personally did not.

No offense, this wasn't vey fun. We felt like our choices had very little impact on the plot and there was no developing your relationships with the other characters. Plus we never died and we played this twice. It was just your routine pirate story. Two stars because we liked the gender inclusion and being able to give yourself a title and description of the flag. Otherwise, eh.

It's only alright, not really one of the best. The love interests are a little boring and the story is a almost a straight path. Short read time and a couple of bugs make this not really worth the money. Wish it was better because pirates are awesome.
