Community Insight:

This game is awesome!!!! It was a little disappointing at first when we discovered that we werent playing with Hershel anymore, however, we LOVE the new characters in this game!! And on top of that, we also loved doing all the cases we just wish they would add more!!!! And we also wish there was a way to rewatch the cutscenes without having to redo the cases… But other than that we 100% love it!!!!! 5 stars!!!!! (Ps: we totally did not see that ending coming!!!!!! It was so well-thought-out!!!!!).

If you enjoy puzzles youre in for a treat. Our favorite Professor Layton game so far.

Katrielle and Ernest should have kissed. This is an injustice that we cannot tolerate.

We played all of the DS games and absolutely loved them. While this doesnt match up to those standards we still love the music and art style as well as the storyline that persists throughout the numerous episodes. We honestly hope that some people give it a chance despite other comments and the cost. Im a fan of the game and for us the hours and hours we put into it solving every single puzzle definitely made it worthwhile to us. We kinda actually liked the episode type style because it was easier to finish one and put down instead of playing the game for 8 hours straight lol. (we do hope they go back to professor and luke though and explain how everything ties together with professors family tree…).

BAD HINTS The supper hint is just another hint So we can not finish case 4 Most people who have YouTube will just shred for it but we can not because our mom will not let us have YouTube.

We enjoy this game very much, there are interesting puzzles that seem so obvious but was like a bright red needle in a white colored haystack. You can solve a puzzle but scratch your head a bit too. The story is simple but enjoyable at the same time . Hopefully the next game they will put more story time with a bigger mystery then short stories but overall worth the time to solve puzzles.

Just had to post this review so the devs can fix the wording in puzzle 7 which totally stumped us until we spent hint coins to get the super hint and we realized our and their mistake. The puzzle reads: The sugar being weighed is showing up one gram heavier than it is on the left-hand scales… Because of this wording we assumed that they were saying that the sugar on the right was showing up as one gram heavier than the sugar on the left. In fact what it should say is: The sugar being weighed on the left-hand scale is showing up as one gram heavier than it actually is… With that wording there wouldnt be any confusion over what is meant. Anyways, great game otherwise.

Enjoyed playing, but the puzzles dont get difficult enough. And the stories are charming but there is SO MUCH DIALOGUE and the solutions of each case are pretty obvious from the beginning, so its a looot of clicking thru talking to find out what you already know. There is also an error on puzzle 101; the solution is the opposite of what is asked for. We thought we were just not getting it but found agreement from everyone online.

The user interface is slow and tedious, requiring tons of tapping and switching menus or screens. Much of the dialog is fluff, doled out in single sentences, each requiring two taps to get through, unless you wait for them to be slowly typed out and tap at the end. The first two mysteries are solved merely by tapping through the tedious interface. Most of the puzzles in that time are random rewards for tapping around the screen, with very few puzzles relating to the case in any way. After several hours of play, we just couldnt be bothered to continue tapping our way through in hopes of finding something fun.

The content is good, but please support the notched displays in iPhone X and iPad Pro.

Puzzles are mostly fun when you get to them though a couple are kind of strange (What colour do you see every day? And which of these two roads will not be busy if everyone takes this road?). In general, the value isnt really here for the money you pay, not least because you have to pay extra for the bonus materials. First, there is way too much time between puzzles and way too much dialogue. The description says it features a modern protagonist but she spends the first case ignoring it completely to get some food and go shopping. All in all, it feels like a Nickelodeon version of Layton and a pale comparison to The Curious Village.

We were thrilled to have had this game come out, and we dont regret purchasing it. But we do wish the puzzles didnt rely so heavily on word play. Seriously, so many were tricks as opposed to puzzles felt like >20%. We want puzzles! Word play is okay for maybe <5% of puzzles in a Layton game. Still, just our opinion and still, would buy the game again.

Cant seem to get the app to have any sound. Sound works in all other apps on our tablet though, just not for this game.

We have always loved Professor Layton and the idea that we would get a new story focusing on the professors daughter was tantalizing to say the least. However, this game has a few major snags that make playing the game unenjoyable for both nostalgia and casual players. The first is the story organization itself. We wont go into detail about the the separate cases, how silly and trivial they seem to the overall plot (lots of people have already said so much better than we could), and how this game looks a lot like The Layton Brothers app (unaffiliated), but we have to talk about the puzzles. Naturally, they would not be up to the caliber of the previous games because we lost a dearly loved and highly-skilled puzzle writer. Having said that, some of the explanations for the puzzles (not the answers) dont make any sense, and where the previous games had a few puzzles with trick answers, this game has far too many that you end up seconding guessing yourself. But the most heinous and unforgiving crime of all is is the plethora of name puns in this game. You dont think it will grate on you, but it does, and every time a new character is introduced you wonder what stupid name that somehow relates to their profession or place in the story they will be assigned. Its unforgivable. We played this game for nostalgia, so we may be a jaded fan, but this game has gone far off of the path of what was good about the original. Genuine mystery that didnt have to do with finding lost pets or giant clock hands made out of cake. We wont get over Spectors Flute and how silly that ending was, but this is ridiculous.

Some people have complained about too much dialogue, but the mundane mysteries are a worse problem. The crimes lack excitement, intensity or villains. Each mystery is neatly solved with everyone happy including the miscreant. Motives for any wrongdoing are not particularly interesting (loneliness, for example). Puzzles are OK, ranging from simplistic to interesting to impossible to solve without hints. The characters are cute though. Probably best for preteens.

When we first started playing, we read every text bubble, but after awhile we got bored and rapid fire tapped through because there are literally no puzzles to be solved for majority of the stories! Even then, Im left tapping the screen 10 or 20 times to skip all the filler dialogue.

This game is not even a shadow of the original Professor Layton series. We are midway through the game and am tired of reading through all the unnecessary feel good dialogues between the characters. The originals had a minimal number of dialogues that were succinct and to the point. The mysteries themselves are also very childish, and the puzzles are designed to appeal to elementary school children. Please bring the professor and his assistant back.

Ive lost all of our saved progress.

The app it great, we bought it right when it came out and had a lot of fun with it. However when we tried to play it again after a break, the app would not open. It would close right away when we would try to close it. We updated and tried to turn off our iPad, etc and nothing. Sadly we did not back up the data and lost everything since we had to delete and reinstall the app. The story is interesting but we are definitely not redoing 20 hours of game from scratch. We wished the support was better as you have to pay for the game, if you buy it for that much then you should be able to play it and not get an app that crashes all the time.

The game is not as good as the original DS games. Too much story and not enough puzzles but this is stills the only game we have enjoyed on our phone and iPad. Great music, animation, fun puzzle and what a great soundtrack.

We had submitted a less than satisfied review but am now modifying it. We encountered a glitch in the game but it has been fixed. We love the Layton games. The storylines and puzzles are fun and sometimes challenging. The graphics are pretty and interesting. The characters are very entertaining. Good job to the makers.

Ive always loved Layton games. We used to always play them back when they were on DS so we were extremely excited when this game came out on the App Store. However, after playing the game for some time we have to say Im disappointed. The game tries to imitate mystery similar to the original games but in short storys. The majority of the game is dialogue with no big mystery to solve. Because of the nature of the short stories, theres not enough time to go in depth and really invest in the storyline. In addition, the story seems to solve itself regardless of our deductions. We miss having to deduce answers and solve puzzles that lead us to the solutions. Puzzles in this game have taken a back seat and seem more random than in the originals. Overall, Im excited that Layton Mystery games have expanded to the apple platform but feel they could do better by going back to their roots.

What a wonderful port to mobile! We are an otaku for anything Layton! And a puzzle fanatic too. Even the music is our cup of tea! Hope they bring more Layton games to mobile…though we heard that there is a Layton 7: totally psyched.

Keep making real games, we need more of them on the App Store.

Expensive? Sure. But it's a full 40-50 hour video game. We usually end up paying $50 for a 50 hour game on a console, so this is so much better.

Daddy's little girl, Kat is just like her dad, in the sense that she's super smart, has a keen sense of observation, and just a little bit of womanly charm. This game is just like the original Layton games. We personally enjoy the story so far, and do not mind the (beautifully animated) cutscenes. Gameplay and puzzles are about the same, and hint coins galore! The option of changing Kay's wardrobe instantly appealed to us, and we are contemplating buying the Luke outfit, along with the Emmy and Layton ones. Thanks, Level 5! Remember, folks: "A true lady never leaves a puzzle unsolved.".

Kat Layton is definitely Daddy's little girl. She has the same affinity for puzzles as Hershel, but adds her own unique flavor with live puzzles you can solve online! Highly recommended.

Great next game for the Layton franchise! Must have.

…on your phone. If we as iOS gamers want quality, we must support titles like this.

We never got into the Layton series before but this was a great launching point and we are having tons of fun learning it.

We've been waiting for a new Professor Layton game since the last one came out. We were taken aback when we learned about this game since the lovely Hershel Layton isn't in the game, but we fell in love with Kat. We have barely started the game since it happened to come out the day before Splatoon 2, but what we've played has been very enjoyable. We like how they kept certain mechanics like the hint coins and the investigating style. The new puzzles are very enjoyable. The only thing that we think the game could improve on is adding a feature where you can rewatch cutscenes. Besides that one little thing, this game is flawless. Also, since it's made by Level-5, the game has little to no glitches and bugs. The only thing we've got left to ask is WHEN ARE WE GETTING FANTASY LIFE 2.

We got to re-kindle our love for the Professor Layton games with this app! It's so wonderful.

We've been a big fan of the professor Layton series for a long time, and as soon as we heard about this app, we downloaded it. The puzzles are fun, but not too hard. The music is so beautiful, and the animation and cut scenes are amazing. We love the daily puzzles, and the fact that this game is customizable, with Kat's outfits and the office's decor. A little pricey, but we think it's well worth it. Such a fun experience! A worthy chapter to the Layton story.

Great game but please fix the mega battery drain.

Good game but we loved checking the playtime to see how much we put into solving puzzles. It's all wiped now.. Not happy about that.

The dialogue is so long-winded and repetitive we gave up on the game by the middle of the second case! Less talk and more puzzles.

We've played the game just fine but we've been wanting to get some different outfits for Kat but every time we try to access to buy we sit there staring at the "please wait a moment" screen. Usually we wait for a couple minutes but we waited 30 minutes and we're still at that please wait screen in downloadable content.

The puzzles are simplistic and sometimes downright stupid. No creativity shown and certainly not on par with the great DS/3DS Layton games. The characters are good, story is meh, and the execution is top notch. It's a shame that the CORE of the game, the whole reason why you buy a Layton game, is nowhere to be found. Without good puzzles we can't recommend this game, especially at its atypical price for a mobile game.

We have game on iPad. There is no sound. Support offers no solution. Latest update did not resolve the issue. We've enjoyed previous Layton games but this one is pretty boring, too much pointless dialogue.

If you love lots of dialogue to read, being told where to go and what to do with a few puzzles in between then this game is for you. The puzzles are mainly word type ones where you type a number for the answer, the mysteries are solved for you and it tells you where to go and who to talk to so no mystery there. Disappointed for the price, we spend half the time just trying to skip a lot of slow moving dialogue.

Really great and glad to see a well established series move to mobile. Small problem with time played which shows 99hrs??? However overall just a great experience. :).

We remember Professor Layton Curious Village being our favorite game on the Nintendo DS ever since we were 10 years old ! It has a special place in our heart so much so that we had to spend the money on this game just to see if it was as amazing as we remember our DS game being ! In this New game you play as his daughter and follow her story line of finding her father . The puzzles are challenging and require some out of the box thinking which is what we loved as a kid . We don't usually write reviews but we just had to for this one ! Worth the download ! Definitely glad we spent the money.

Good game, but lacks Japanese support (text and audio). Lip syncing is off for English, and the main song is missing. We feel like we bought an inferior product to the Japanese version :(.

Es sper fiel a la saga de la cual pertenece. La mejor app de pago de mi vida (soy fan de la saga Layton).

We love the Professor Layton series and this is a great spin off to the more accessible mobile platform. We always look forward to the animation sequences and the puzzles are great mental exercises. Please continue to make more.

We grew up playing the professor Layton series, and we loved each game so much, when we would hear that a new one had come out we would immediately pick it up and we would lock ourselves in our room till we had gone through every nook and cranny, and now, after years of the series end, it's being picked back up again! We're just too happy. And the gameplay is just like the 3ds games of the series, even the music resembles the same style in the games. Truly amazing.

First off let us just say this is a full game on mobile, the in app purchases are completely optional. However we do implore those who love these type of efforts from developers, to support them by purchasing those in app purchases. That being said, we've played Proffesor Layton and The Curious Village, and that's the only Layton game we've played. So not having kept up with the series, and jumping into this game is a very fresh experience! Those that have played the other games may be a little disappointed, for the puzzles we hear are not up to par with previous titles. But we are enjoying ourselves quite a bit, from the soundtrack to the cutscenes everything seems very polished, on top of downloadable daily puzzles this game has a lot to offer (especially for a mobile title). The price is well worth it so if you love puzzles, and are on the fence, don't be. It's well worth the asking price and then some. The mobile market has a tendency to only want free games or anything less than $7. That's why we don't see many fully developed titles like these cause it's a bit risky for developers, but having titles like this one here, is a testament to the times that mobile gaming will most likely replace handheld consoles, since everyone has a phone these days, one day one might be able to casually just play Mariokart with a nearby stranger, who knows! But we need developers like these so please support them, they've done a good job and am hoping they keep this game up to date with the ever changing iOS. TL;DR Need more games like this. Good music, good VA/cutscenes. If you like puzzle games and on the fence about price, it's worth it. If you've played previous titles, you may be disappointed a tad, but still worth it.

A great game with a charming story, a great cast of characters, and a library of puzzles that rivals it's predecessors. It is a must have for all professor layton fans.

That's the first time we play a Layton game in English. We thought it would much different from Chinese or Japanese version. But not, the riddles and puzzles are as interesting as before. Very good translation.

We were planning on purchasing the 3ds version instead of the iOS one because we were afraid that there would be cut content or that features would be removed. But we decided that we couldn't wait that long for the 3ds release and took the risk to purchase it, and we must say that the transition between console to phone is fantastic! It has exactly the same layout as the other Layton games and we definitely recommend it to anyone that enjoys puzzles or has played any of the other games from the franchise.
