A Glimpse into Backgammon+

It’s just a well-known Backgammon game: everything you need to play and nothing more:

  • a simple and nice interface
  • play alone, with a friend or online
  • works offline without internet
  • wooden board and atmosphere
  • both vertical and horizontal board orientations are supported
  • the Doubling cube with the Crawford rule.

The dice are thrown randomly and do not depend on who is playing, AI level and board conditions.

-> WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT BACKGAMMON?
Backgammon is one of the oldest board games, dating back about 5,000 years. Now the game is popular worldwide.
Playing backgammon requires strategy, tactics and luck. With each roll of the dice, players choose from a variety of options to move the checkers, and must anticipate their opponents’ possible counter-moves.
In one game, luck in rolling the dice can be critical, but in a series of games, skill is critical to win.

-> HOW TO PLAY
Each player has 15 checkers of a different color that move in opposite directions counting the points according to the numbers rolled by a pair of dice. The player first to get his checkers around, and then off the board, wins the game.

When there is no chance of winning, the game should end.

This game is essentially unplayable due to the dice rolls. The dice very obviously gives the AI and advantage. Makes it impossible to play and its gotten to the point where we can pretty accurately guess the exact dice roll the AI will get in certain situations. The most obvious is when the AI is on the bar. Without fail, it will always get the exact roll needed to get off the bar; even if theres only one place to land. Fix the dice issue and this game would easily get 5 stars.

This game cheats in favor of itself. Please make another verse that does not cheat.

Fun game BUT. It is totally rigged for the house. There is no way that the dice could repeatedly come out so favorable for the house. Really ticks us off.

Even on the easy setting, 95% of dice rolls favor the computer, which makes for frustrating, unfair gameplay.

These guys do not give a good product. They are using a form of AI, reinforcement learning, and loaded dice to improve their algorithm at the expense of players. We’re sure all players expect a truly random dice in order to enjoy a proper game of Backgammon. Even games against other players have loaded dice. They’re just using the players for their own ends.

The algorithms for the AI are definitely not random and in favor of they AI. We’ve played 50 games on easy mode, and have only one 3 times. The AI always gets what they need, while it takes us forever to get the right numbers. Fun game, but not when its rigged. Too bad.

Terrible game. Loaded dice favor house. Developer wont even respond these comments.

The game cheats with the dice. You need a better program to make the game realistic.

Dice algorithm is horrible. Far too predictable and repetitive.

One game we can play with not a single ad or app purchase. Just backgammon!!

While the play is smooth and fast, this game is extremely frustrating because it does not have random rolls. We can always tell when the dice are going to favor "the house" and when we won’t get a roll we need for numerous rounds. We have deleted the app several times, but come back because the other aspects of the game are pretty good.

Highlight available moves. Undo button for fat thumbs. Hint button.

We’ve been playing for a while, simple games and notice that when I.m trying to get back in, more often than not it takes several 5 or more rolls to get back on the board but when the opponent is out, they often get back in on the first or second roll no matter how many spaces are available on either side.

We love the game but it seems the computer never makes mistakes so it is discouraging.

This app is easily our favorite. Docking a star because we wish developers would invest more in the design and look of the app.

We enjoyed learning how to play the game against the program. But we agree with other reviewers. The dice rolls dont appear to be 100% random. AI player always hits the numbers needed to capture our checker and to exit when captured. It is too deliberate and consistent in its favor. If it were a person, we wouldnt play with it cause it cheats.

Really like the game, but it is rigged. If you are winning AI will roll to force you to loose.

Great game. However, it is missing the double cube, which is about half the strategy of the game.

Game is alright, high levels clearly the game tilts the AI, roles are almost perfect every time where your roles are worse. The only time you get any doubles is towards the end when the game is basically over. Make the roles more random and even for both players and we would say its a pretty nice game. Until then, at hard levels it becomes one sided with the dice roll.

We want to love this game but why not really make the dice roll truly randomized??? There is no way that it is randomized. We have started at least 30 games with a 5-2 roll. We have seen other talk about a 4-3 roll. The amount of times the dice have gone against us because the game has rolled exactly the right combo is unbalanced to the point of ruining the game. We know this is happening because when we play against human opponents it virtually never happens. Test this and you will see. Such a great interface and game play engine and yet fundamentally flawed. Please do something about this because it takes all the fun out of the game.

Too often the algorithm gives the computer the exact roll needed to suppress. And too often, the number needed to get back into play is not rolled for 5-8 turns.

This is a beautiful and smooth backgammon app. We would give it 5 stars, however, we have played 170 games now (on easy) and am only winning 25% of the time. While it is possible that we are just not good at backgammon, it is very noticeable that the computer CONSISTENTLY rolls what it needs to hit us or get off the bar right away. We may have to roll 4,5, even 6 times to get what we need and the computer gets off in 1 or 2, almost every time. Usually the first roll. Its gotten to the point where we know that if we leave one piece on a spot, we know that we will be hit and sent to the bar on the computers very next roll. Developers, PLEASE take a look at this. It is very frustrating.

The code that matches you with other online players should account for experience level. If our score is <50 then we shouldnt be matched with players who have won hundreds or thousands of games. It doesnt help you learn to be better when your destroyed at every turn.

In single player mode, when playing medium or hard level, the game routinely gives the opponent extremely advantageous rolls. As in, mathematically ridiculous rolls.

The computer almost always gets the perfect rolls to get you out & cover their positions. The odds are definitely stacked against you. We are deleting this game out of frustration regarding the above observations.

It always rolls exactly what it needs.

The die rolls seem to significantly favor the simulated opponent.

Computer always gets the best roll of the dice so hard to win.

The AI gets far more lucky rolls than you will ever get at all levels of play. It was frustrating even at the easy level. We played for a couple weeks and then deleted it.

This AI is a total cheater. Not realistic at all to play against. Recommend playing against other people as the AI cheats with rolls. Its crazy how obvious it is and someone needs to rewrite the software.

This game cheats way too much. The game always conveniently rolls the most opportune dice combo. We play it but Im not thrilled with the cheating.

Nice design and ergonomics. But the dice rolls are statistically improbable. Really mars an otherwise well rendered game.

We have been playing this game for several weeks to try to improve our strategy. We play single player. What we have found is that in the initial roll of dice, 8 times out of 10 the computer/opponent has the higher die, meaning they get to go first. This should be 50/50 as going first is a big advantage. Wry frustrating.

Dice rolls dont seem random. Have played hundreds of rounds. Background in math and game theory. Zero doubt in our mind that the dice arent random. Either the developers are lying or they dont know whats in the code, just our theory. We know people will say its in our imagination. Try for your self and see.

We like playing, but it needs random dice at all levels and a better opponent when playing 1 player. The dice rolls get worse at higher levels, the player does not get smarter not a real backgammon play.

Great interface and functionality however playing solo on hard is just absurd. Even if youre the best player in the world, the computer will beat you by rolling the exact numbers it needs at almost each position throughout the game, even if its 1 in a million. After all its a game of luck, so no matter your strategy or how good you are, the computers luck will knock you out.

9 times out of 10, if you are playing someone that has more points. You tend to get lousy dice rolls, thus allowing the higher point person to always win. This is also true with the needed roll. The higher point person will get that needed roll immediately, whereas the lesser point person will have to roll upon roll. You need to set your program to be a little more realistically fair to both players.

Us thinks it cheats when in HARD mode.

The game is unplayable due to the luck of the computer. Dice rolls are NOT random. The algorithm is designed to favor the computer (on all levels).

We have played Backgammon for real for many many years now. The cpu plays a totally unrealistic game. Its overly aggressive and cheats with multiple doubles as soon as it gets behind. There are other backgammon games much better than this that plays more like a human opponent with balanced strategy.

Im no expert backgammon player, but even on easy mode we lose way too often. Other reviews confirm our suspicionsthe AI either isnt random, or otherwise not conducive to good game play.

The crookedest dice in the universe. The AI ALWAYS gets a perfect roll. The programmers should be soundly thrashed. Theres no excuse for this level of sucking.

Dice rolls are not random AI will always get exactly what it needs.

This game cheats. There is no way that the dice rolls are fair. We have played it several times and the computer challenger always goes on a streak of perfect rolls while we have rolls that cant make a move. Bogus game. Pull it.
