Dive into Choice of the Vampire

Slake your thirst, without becoming a monster! Blessed with the blood-soaked gift of immortality, will you tend the flock of humanity—or twist it to your whims? When a brash young country butts heads with a brash young vampire, who will come out ahead?

Choice of the Vampire is an epic, four-volume, 850,000-word interactive novel, by Jason Stevan Hill. It’s entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Begin your vampiric journey in Volume One, "The Battle of New Orleans," set in antebellum Louisiana, where your reputation is only as good as your skill with a sword or dueling pistol. Volume Two, "The Siege of Vicksburg," continues into the Civil War, at the site of one of the war’s most grueling and decisive battles. When a strange vampire seeks to disrupt the Confederate defenses, will you help him, hinder him, or consume him?

In Volume Three, "The Fall of Memphis" (available as an in-app purchase) you find yourself in Memphis, as ex-Confederates loot the public coffers and dismantle the advances of Reconstruction. In Volume Four, "St. Louis, Unreal City," explore the 1904 World’s Fair, which promises to be the party of the century.

As your character concludes their first century of unlife, they must navigate the waters of industrialization and urbanization. The excesses of capital and rapid industrialization is producing a new class of educated, militant workers who are ready and willing to stand up to the nation’s elite. Meanwhile, the vestiges of the Confederacy systematically dismantle Reconstruction, while simultaneously pitting European immigrants against the Chinese and the formerly enslaved. And yet, national figures such as JP Morgan and Jay Gould are forcing their will upon St. Louis all the way from New York.

Still, the vampires of the Society must adapt and thrive, caught between centuries of experience and the rapidly changing world around them—a world that would destroy them utterly if they were to be revealed. When one of their number permanently gives into their Beast and begins hunting other vampires, the Society of North America are thrust into disarray, and you must decide what is worth dying for.

  • Play as male or female; gay, straight, or pan; cis or trans.
  • Exploit the domains of humanity: become a patron of the arts, an advocate of the temperance movement, an underworld boss, an investor in industry, or a visionary of the world of the unseen.
  • Choose your prey: gamblers, artists, financiers, or workers. Hold your head up high and feed only from animals—or drink the heartsblood of your fellow vampires with gusto.
  • Survive the machinations of your fellow vampires, the malice of the mortals you have wronged, and the hunters who want to see your kind destroyed.
  • Unravel the mysteries of vampirekind.
  • Meet famous historical figures—and drink their blood.

Can the American Republic satiate you, or will you drain it dry?

Find out what gamers are saying about Choice of the Vampire:

We’ve been binging this game for days, and the ending we’ve gotten in St. Louis has us begging4 more !!!

Somewhere around Saint Louis your save can be corrupted over time. Restoring a quicksave will speed this process up, eventually ensuring every value, including your name, is now inaccurate. A real bummer because by this time youve already invested in your character quite a bit. No idea what lies beyond the StL because our character was completely different on chapter change a third of the way through.

Readers have been waiting on a finished storyline for years. Its a great game, but we wouldn’t buy it again because theres no follow-through from the writers. Only invest in this series if you are okay with an infinite cliffhanger.

Theres a major bug: if youre German, have a high level of strength, or are taught strength by Carothers, it restarts the game and doesnt let you into chapter 4. Otherwise we love the game.

We started this game in high school and was surprised by how long it took for a second one. We love this game, it kept us glued to it the whole time, but we wish for faster releases, or an ending chapter instead of waiting almost 8 years for a new release.

Honestly kind of disappointed with this game. Wish the story focused more on the vampire aspect and less on the overall history. Quite wordy and times and to be honest, a bit boring. Choices did not feel like they impacted our story. Clotho arc was our favorite part but even that could have been done better. Below average game for a very above average studio. (Are you guys a studio or like authors? Not sure what to call you. Studio-thors? Auth-ios? )

We had trouble following the story, and there were so many characters that werent all listed in the sides, we lost track. That you couldnt see what your relationship level was with people was a real issue too. Also, the best Choice of Games stories flow well. They are stories you want to see what happens next in. This one did not flow well at all, it couldnt keep our attention very well.

At first we were unsure if we would like it but then we got hooked it is an amazing game please make part 3 so we can continue our story.

Have played it time and again and enjoy it every time. Very engaging story in an interesting time in history.

We originally played this around 5 years ago and we’ve been waiting for more. We played the Memphis thing already. If you are not going to continue work on it, could you at least make the description of it less misleading. It promises to span 200 years. We’ve covered what, 57 years so far? Please continue this masterpiece!

The story could have been better written. If it were, we think it would have left a better impression on us and been a lot more engaging. It was too much history and not enough of how that history affected the player character and the vampire society. So many names were thrown around and characters introduced but very little time or development was given to them that we felt no attachment to any of them unless we forced myself to care. Sometimes it seemed the story would be pushing certain characters or pathways or even traits onto the player. There were some good aspects of the game, like the romance with Silas, but those were few and far between.

The description of the game says that you begin a 200 year journey as a vampire but this first part only goes about 50 years or so. You have to purchase each part of the story individually and as of right now it isnt even complete. Consider that you may never get to finish the story that you start. That being said, if they complete the story and put it in one app with one price tag, we would say that it would be worthwhile. The writing is decent and the inclusion of historical settings is appreciated.

We do not regret making this purchase; however, we do wish there was a romance that survived. Our vampire was quite in love with Silas, but sadly he didn’t make it.

We really enjoyed this game. The characters have well-developed personalities and we were surprised by the number of choices available. The player has a lot of control over how the game will go. We’ve enjoyed playing it over and over. So far, it’s been different every time. Our only complaint is about our character’s relationships with mortals. It seems the objects of her affection inevitably die. We wish the game designers would let at least one lover survive!

It’s awesome. Choice of Games have legitimately some of the best choose-your-adventure text-based games you can find anywhere (if not THE best). Idk how anyone could get bored unless they just didn’t like reading? But yeah if you wanna pretend you’re a vampire, this is definitely the game for you. You have so many different choices at the beginning of the game – your race, your gender, your beginning stats, and whether or not you want to romance your dominus. Hell, depending on your dominus, you could even choose to go run around in the woods and learn to control animals, if that’s what you want to do. Also – your gender doesn’t decide who you can romance. You can be a male vampire romancing a male soldier or a female vampire romancing a female voodoo priestess. Legitimately you can pretty much do whatever you want. But yeah 5/5 definitely worth it to buy this game. (Also it has hella replay value we mean it. You can go through and have a completely different kind of gameplay depending on what you choose to do. It’s incredible.)

We love this CoG title. Its setting does, however, seem taken directly out of an Anne Rice vampire novel. Not that we’re complaining; we adore "Interview With a Vampire".

At first we wasn’t sure how we would like this app. But in the end we found myself addicted to it! We have went through and played so many times we’ve lost count!

We enjoyed this very much. Reminiscent of the vampire the masquerade games.

We absolutely love these type of games, and the fact that it has a vampire setting to it is great. We love the different varieties in choices the game offers as it helps further develop your character and what it is the unique player wishes to do in the game. Whether it’s love, power, money etc. The game offers the player the choice of carrying out actions which further help accomplish that. It’s interesting and we’re waiting for more!

This game is so much fun. We were actually very surprised at how many different paths an variations your character can take depending on your choices. We’re really looking forward to the third part!

To be honest we found this one a little boring, we mean it’s just not very eventful. The amount of choice you have when deciding your character is admirable but the story is just really, really slow. There isn’t much to really grip us which is sad because we love most of COG’s stories and we were really looking forward to enjoying this. But no matter, if you don’t mind a story that "takes its time" and is very, very subdued then go on ahead, it is still a fine premise. Also not to mention that if you show no interest in a secondary character they just get written off as dying off screen and that’s just really, really, frustrating.

This is yet another in the long line of great CYOA style games. We loved every page of it. Our only complaint would be its length, we truly expected at least a few more chapters.

Relatively engaging, numerous outcomes. Satisfying vengeance with blowing up a certain traitorous vampire after he killed us the last play-through. But we can’t fathom why we’re asked to pay another 3$ for the, what, second installment? We could go buy 3 books for that much, including the price of inconvenience. You have good stories here, but not God-tier ones.

Well written, but absolutely nothing happens.

We would honestly give this game 5 stars if it was t for it being A little short compared to other games worth the same amount. It’s is for how long it lasts is quite enjoyable well written and really interesting but it’s pretty short and you need to pay for part two. And I’d say part two isn’t really worth it either it just isn’t as great as the first one we found it to bland and once again short for its price. But yet with those flaws I’d still like to see longer more worth it work from this Arthur because his/hers writing is amazing and captivating and use the stats in away to make it truly matter and sometimes can even bring events not even mentioned with out the skills to come across it.

We usually love games from this company, but this one was painfully boring. We couldn’t make it very far at all and ended up deleting it off our phone without finishing. We wish refunds were an option.

The story progresses very slowly. The stats are too complicated, take Choice of the dragon, for example, which is a bit short, but has three basic stat "opposites". Also, you have to read too much before making a choice. We feel like you have to read very carefully and pay attention to every small detail to make a choice. We suppose we thought games were meant to be entertainment, not this involved. Anyway, if you read this far, we noticed that in the beginning, when choosing your name, we tried doing ‘Cullen’ (I know, we loved Twilight, and we are kind of ‘obsessed’) and it wouldn’t let us. It said ‘this is a no-twinkle zone’ and ‘are you going to chase Bella around like a wounded puppy’. Even when we tried using a different first name, it is for last names. This was a bit annoying, because 1. If it is because the makers don’t like twilight, they we should keep their personal views out of the game or 2. If they don’t want you ‘copying’ one of the Cullens, well, you could just be in their coven as yourself.

We fell asleep while playing, it’s that boring.

This game got us hooked for hours.

Great to go through. Feels empowering. Lots of branches.

We’ve played two lives to understand the system and it’s still entrapping.

We’ve had this for a couple of years now, and we totally love it!!

This game is really good. Since we played it, we have been hooked up to this types of games. We definitely recommend it.

This is probably our second favorite game in the official choice of games cataloge, second to heroes rise. We love how much customization is placed in and how well written the story is. Even if the story is a bit railroaded, we found that the choices were pretty okay and some really does make an impact no matter how small. The only thing holding us back from giving this story a 5-stars rating is pretty much how the stats works. We find it to be extremely cluttered and some aren’t even used much.

This is a great game, just like most of the others by Choice of Games, however the fact that you have to buy part two is a complete rip off. Although it is a great story, and it’s filled to the brim with references to all sorts of things throughout American history, you may want to buy one of the other games by this person, because you have to pay double for this story if you want the whole thing.

We liked it for the most part. Though, we were upset we needed to buy a send game to continue it. We mean, it mentions in the summary how it takes place during your 200+ years of vampiric life. Then when you’re less than half way through it, game ends and you gotta get the next game?

Definitely one of our favorite games. The only problem we have with it is that to play the second part, you have to buy it. We already bought the first part, and really we don’t want to pay another $3 to continue your game. In every other aspect, this app deserves a 5. But unfortunately this little bad spot prevents us from adding the last two stars.

At first we were excited about a vampire story, thinking of all the choices we would make as a monster of the night. We were expecting to make choices such as," do you decide to cast aside this meal and retain your humanity, or delve into the flesh, and relinquish your humanity"or "The trio of Monster hunters have not noticed you yet, do you: [Take them by surprise [jump in front and attack them head-on You know, those kind of choices. Instead, we were thrust into the world of never-ending politics, and having to read every line of this boring conversation just to get the good parts. We have never wanted to kill our character faster just to get an ending, and say goodbye to this nightmare of never ending bonds.

We don’t know how it got such high reviews but we can tell you that this story is not capturing and your choices no matter hon numerous have a very little effect on the outcome.

Having played (& paid for) several other "Choice of…" games from this group, we were confident in spending the $3 (more than their others) for this game. We were sorely disappointed. The writing’s mediocre (though it attempts to disguise that by finding the "fanciest" alternatives possible from the thesaurus), the story’s uninteresting, & important events which could greatly improve or clarify the situation/storyline are glossed over. On top of the boredom, you don’t even get the full story – you have to pay an additional $3 (& install a whole other app) for the "second part."

We have played some of the other games created by choice games, and we really enjoyed them. But since the purchase, we have not been able to access the game, something about network data error. Please fix this we would really like to enjoy the game.

Well written and thoughtful but kind of boring.

There is something wrong with the stats. They start off unbalanced and you are unable to make certain choices! Please fix!

We love the game but we have a huge glitch with our stats. No matter what we do; i.e restart the game, our stats won’t reset to 50/50. Whenever we restart, anachronism is at 99/1, spirituality is at 85/15, etc. This ends up blocking a lot of potential choices. Please fix this.

When we purchase a game we expect a full game, not just a small chapter from on ongoing saga. Even when ff10 came out with ff10.2 both were stand alone games. We suggest if you want to play a vampire game, you stick to the pc, as this one is a cheap cheat.

The story remind us of an old "Choose your own Adventure" book. We live being able to choose our path and read the benefits or consequences. The story is extremely well written and there a ton of depth. We also love the way the game rates your decision in the way of stats and wealth. We haven’t finished this episode yet but we’re pleasantly surprised by how addicted we’ve become to it.

The quality of this one is far below others from this developer, it’s short and lacks any sort of cohesive storyline or plot.

The game itself was fun, but it only took us about an hour to finish; it did not have any sort of conclusion whatsoever. It then directed us to the second part of the story, which would cost us another $3 and got horrible reviews. No, thanks. We regret spending our money on this game.

The sequel! It’s finally out after all this time! YEESS!

We absolutely love this app; in our opinion, it is the best one you have made to date! With so many options or actions, we never got bored playing it and always found some new approach or actions to take in the story. The story itself is entertaining; we are not extremely knowledgable in any type of history, but it kept us completely enthralled and we wanted more! We still do! So please! Don’t leave us hanging for too much longer for the update! >.<
