Disgaea 1 Complete Reviews

Disgaea has always been about the grind. You had to grind for the alternate endings, grind for Aetna mode, grind to world boss 100. The problem is… Well: Auto-battle makes it so you dont actually have to play the game. Now the game is fun, and we dont mean in that it gets better sense, but we cant think of a single justification for actually playing 150+ maps instead of letting the AI do it. This isnt the cutting edge of tactical play anymore. Its a port of a ~20 year old game. There are better options. And you can enjoy those options while letting the AI play for you. Or you could save 30 bucks and buy current-gen tactical games on Steam. Heck, you can probably pick up D4 for that price. Vals a better overlord anyway. Yeah, we said it! SARDINES!!!

This has been our favorite game EVER! Our heart goes out to the Nippon Ichi team, thank you all very much!

The sort of turn based strategy RPG with customisable parties of levellable customisable characters in the vein of FF Tactics is hard to find. Disgaea is arguably the flagship franchise of the genre. Its very good. This is an excellent port that was clearly optimised for mobile.

The original Disgaea is a classic, but this port is such a flawless execution of the original that we had to write this review. It can be hard sometimes with screen space being obviously smaller than the PS2 screens it was originally intended for, but somehow the developers made this work. Other companies that port games to mobile need to take advice from the guys that did the work on this game.

Its remastered so well, what can we say now, take our money, 2-3-4-5 plz :)

No real complaints, we just love that we had the opportunity to write that bug report.

We remember playing this waaaaay back. The HD is nice, which we gather is from another update along the line. The auto battle makes the grind aspect of this game/post-game playable on mobile and is an amazing addition. The item world can still screw you over with its randomness but we worked through it before, Im glad its still 100% random. We also wish more games were released like this with NO MICRO TRANSACTIONS!

Both myself and the app development are at early stages of the game. We bought it hoping to play it on the big screen using the Apple TV and a controller while at home, and play on the phone while on the road. Unfortunately, this game does not support the Apple TV yet. We are a HUGE FAN of Disgaea series. Meaning our review will be extremely bias So far, the game is Amazing. We’re playing on an iPhone Xs Max right now. Controls need a little getting used to, but we seem to have full control of the camera and other features using on screen buttons, which is nice. We wonder if gestures would make it better or worse. We noticed that the app store says it works on iPad. We will give that a go. Playing on a 12.9 inch touch screen would be interesting! We hope an update to support the Apple TV is in the works. Again, our point is to play on the big screen at home, and on the phone while we’re out and about. Screen mirroring works. We will attempt using a DualShock controller with the iPhone and screen mirroring! (Does that work? We never tried the iOS 13 feature of gaming controllers) No doubt, this game gets 5 stars from us.

Thank you thank you thank you! We have been hoping for this game to come to smart devices. Bring back fond memories and definitely has always been an amazing grind game. But there are two issues that we came across. 1) With auto save/auto battle on in item world, it can overwrite characters. It seems to take any three characters (even a chance of main ones!) and overwrites them with ones you wouldnt even consider and cannot delete no matter what. Simple solution we found was just to turn off auto save altogether. But its still an issue worth addressing. 2) Trying to use a controller is very confusing. Not certain if there is a way to tweak that in settings or anything. As well as only being limited to basic functions. Would be nice if they perfected this portion for a few reasons: grind games should offer a sense of convenience somewhere, controls for touch screens use nearly every corner (can get painful after a while), and being overly dependent on auto battle can almost defeat the purpose of playing the game. Other than that we are very happy that we got this game and we hope you bring more Disgaea in the future.

Friendship has begun with Disgea, dude.

Need the other disgaeas to come to mobile too :(

Please please make it so we can listen to podcast/audible/music while playing. Then its perfect. Music stops every time we press a button so we have to play in silence or from another device.

We are getting 0 audio from this game. We deleted it and reinstalled, restarted our phone still have no audio.

Could you pls port Disgaea 2 thanks.

It needs to be rated for at least 12+ it has mild language/ a few curse words but we love the game 5 stars all the way !!!!

Good game, good port. We cant listen to other music or podcasts while playing the game. Once you interact with the game other audio source pause and will pause each time you tap the game window.

Disgaea 1 Complete + is a completely different game than its non mobile counterparts. The reason is because the touch screen controls for ordering your units around the map are very difficult to use, and at this time the game has no controller support. Thus we used auto battle for all times except when destroying certain geo panels was necessary. In addition the game has 8x speed and auto repeat stages. This makes the game feel more like a gacha game without any energy restrictions keeping you from playing levels. So for us the game became a game of building characters and powerful equipment in the item world, rather than a game about tactical combat and clever problem solving, which the game originally was. In addition, due to the 8x speed, the original 40 hour game took us about 14 hours to beat all but the craziest end game content. But we have played many Disgaea games so we already knew the mechanics and we skipped about 2 hours of cutscenes that we had already seen. This is probably a fine game for people new to the franchise. It is a difficult game so dont be surprised if get you stuck by level 3, but with auto play it is incredibly easy to brute force your way through all the missions, even the ones that typically require cleverness to beat. In addition money is hard to come by at the start of the game so be sure to save some money for healing. We had no crashes at all, and for the mobile port they added a drop down list of all the vendors you can go to so you dont need to wander around your home base the entire game. At 32$ it is up to your budget if it is worth it, so probably wait for a sale on this one.

Would buy the sequels but not at $32. Closer to $20 would be fine. Otherwise the game is good, only criticism is the menus could be more iPad friendly.

We love this game but the problem is that we cant play music from other apps while this one is running like an audiobook.

No problems on iPhone version but the game crashes when trying to retrieve our cloud save on ipad.

Im. So excited for this game but it wont install. We have tons of room on our phone. We have deleted and tried to re install several times. Will support or someone please advise a fix. Thanks !

The good: Game is as hilarious and fun as ever. Now with auto battling for grinding, although it isnt very smart, but that may be a good thing. UI improvements for touch screens, very convenient especially in your home castle, access to shops is just a couple of clicks away. The bad: combat can be annoying with the amount of taps it takes to accomplish something. For example to move a character, 1 click on them to deselect previous selection, click on them again to select them, click on them again to bring up their combat menu, click move, click the space you wish to move to to select it, click the space again to move there. It could be as simple as drag and drop your character to where you want them to move, no need for 6 taps for each character. Same for attacking, it could be a much more friendly interface Great game, worth playing, we hope they add more touchscreen improvements.

So happy to see such a great port of this game on IOS. Thank you! Theres a bit of clunkiness between movement and action during battle, which hopefully gets fixed. (It is minor in comparison to those of you who have played the IOS port of FInal Fantasy Tactics) The shortcut menu and auto battle mode are an absolute gamechanger in regards to grinding. Awesome addition. Our only major complaint is that we cant listen to music or podcasts while playing. The game disables all background programs. Is there a way to fix this? There is no icon under general settings to change this option as many other games have. Again, a great port, but we like listening to podcasts, audiobooks, music, rather than the music of a game we’ve played through multiple times on other platforms. For the price, this should be an option. Thanks again.

Update: The most recent update fixed the only graphical issue we had with the app. The support NIS has been providing is amazing. You must buy this game!!! (The only issue we have uncovered is when entering the Dark Assembly, the screen zooms in somewhat and cannot be fixed short of exiting and restarting the app. Once fixed, we will update back to 5 stars.) Fixed and updated to 5 stars. It is great to see a port done right for once. The game runs flawlessly on our iPad pro. We highly recommend this game. It is well worth the price for the amount of content available. Hopefully NIS will have the rest of the series ported over in the future.

Tapping to click doesnt work, have to click track pad all the way in. Allow 2 finger panning around world. Simple changes = win.

All of the sudden lost all the sound to the game. We have restarted our phone and updated it just in case but our other apps are working just fine for volume. We have also checked the in game settings just to be sure but no matter what we do we still dont have volume. Is there anyway to fix this? Besides that we very much enjoy playing this game on our phone due to the auto battle feature and battle combat speed up. The console versions dont have those abilities so it makes it much easier to play the game time wise.

Disgaea is a great game, but unfortunately the mobile implementation does it no favors for reasons that should have been blatantly obvious during development. The touch controls are way too janky, which might be mitigated by auto battle feature, if auto battle worked as advertised. Setting gate priority doesnt actually target the gate until your char has killed like half the map in the item world. Even with gate priority on and a gate reachable on the very first turn, your character will run past it to fight some random mob and get swarmed first. Even at this price point we would have gotten Disgaea 4 now that its out if it werent for these issues, but nope, looks like they repeated their mistakes all over we cant figure out for the life of us why they didnt include a dpad option for the control scheme, 90% of the free junk in the App Store has it and yet a full console port cant?

We love these series but there are a few things… 2. The character touch mapping is off. We used a stylis and you guys need to increase the character bounding boxes by 5% because when tapping on a character you have to tap the center otherwise it doesnt register. 3. The game should save state at all times the auto save feature is a bit faulty, unlike playstation etc, mobile games should always always save state, especially because you can get a call, overheating, battery life etc etc.

So far so good going into the game. The gameplay is surprisingly fun with an Apple Pencil to act as a stylus. The graphics are good and of course the gameplay is regarded as a classic. However as an iPad user we feel the GUI in battles could be less squashed together for such a big screen and we feel this is a pretty important detail that would justify the price for us personally, other wise 1 regret not just playing on the switch or even our PSP.

We’ve been a big fan of Disgaea ever since it first came out on the PlayStation 2, which was played with a controller and we feel its entirely possible to give this game full controller support, meaning the ability to adjust which buttons do what. Considering the games price we dont think thats too much of a stretch for the developers to add this as a feature.

Let us start by saying Im a huge supporter of NIS. We love the fact that they are bring theyre games to the mobile platform. We love Disgaea 1 thats not why Im rating it 2 stars. Our only complaint and its a huge one is why can we not turn the audio off. If we turn it down it stops all other audio (no podcasts, no music) forcing us to sit in silence if we want to leave the game on Auto while we do other things. Please fix this.

The app keeps crashing whenever we play it.

Well the game is alright to some standard but for the most part it makes no sense at all when the main character is fighting a enemy that the enemy just ignores and goes straight for them like wow we played the original never have they done that another is every time we go to character creation no try to make a ninja and go to genius start bill force closes another one when geo says invincible and anyone on the square color cant die yea worked on one stage but when we go to another our characters die why is that cause someone doesnt know the meaning of we there is color geo you touch your invincible but apparently guess not and are screwed um lets see Im not saying this cause we feel the game is cheating oh no Im saying this cause we remember that the game didnt override and just let enemy only have invincibility.

We’ve read in the patch notes that cloud save has been fixed. For us, that is not the case. Pressing the cloud save button crashes the entire game. Issues like this arent acceptable on a game with a 32 dollar price tag. How do we resolve this?

Disgaea is hands down our favorite tactical RPG. Story, characters, game mechanics. We find them all very enjoyable. We’ve bought the game on multiple platforms and would do it again. Our problem is the app itself. The most important and biggest problem we have is the game crashing. We’ve installed updates, rebooted, lowered graphic settings, and the game still crashes. Other things that could use some touching up is streamlining movement during combat while using the touch screen and viewing enemy stats. Perhaps for movement there can be a drag function… May help. Maybe a press and hold on an enemy to view its movement range and stat sheet; clicking anything else afterwords would back out of that. UI… We honestly feel that a lot of the item equipping and such can be consolidated down to one tab. No reason to have a separate stat page and a separate equip page. Also, when looking at the mentor pupil page it lists no character name, so we have to select the stat tab just to see who Im viewing. Shop UI, most things are manageable, but the selling is not. Its nearly unbearable using the touch screen. Its nice we can sell everything based off of rarity, but there are some common stuff Id like to keep. Itd be nice to just have the ability to go down our inventory checking things off Id like to sell. Everything is tolerable; the game crashing is not. It makes it unplayable. Thus, Im being prevented from playing a game we truly enjoy.

Sinking dozens of hours into the game only to have your whole party swapped out by NPC charters and loose all your equipment is a little deviating. Having it happen years after launch is unacceptable. Common NIS. We buy most of your games day one on other platforms, but this will probably keep us well away from any iOS titles.

We have been dying for this game to come out on iOS for years now. We love Disgaea games and thought they would be a perfect fit for iPhone. We have bought this titles thrice now. Didnt even hesitate even with the 30 dollar price tag and this game is amazing. Its not just a port they flesh it out and feel like it was made for a handheld phone. Our only wish is the ability to mute the game sound so we can listen to our audiobook or our own music while playing. We can sink hours into this game but dont want to have to stop playing to listen to books. The game currently interfere with audio and stops it even if you put all sound at 0 setting. That small grip is our only complaint otherwise this game from what we have played is a perfect 10.

We AM A FOREVER FAN!! Get yo birth right throne Laharl! PS. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH FOR THE SPEED X8 and AUTO!!! Wowwwww dreams come true bruh!!! And whoever put those features AND AUTO REPEAT..! OMG we LOVE YOU!! True masters at ur entire company! LIVE LONG AND PROSPER !!

Its pretty crazy how much work was put into making this game mobile friendly. The resolution fits the screen, lots of options to control battery sucking, auto battle, shortcuts to move around, touch friendly camera controls, and probably more that we havent found yet. We cant think of another game that has gone this far to be mobile friendly, right down to the auto battling feature. Its a game changer for grinding.

What a delight this is. Not only is Disgaea a particularly delightful game of its genre (get it without hesitation if you have interest in these titles and havent played it), Disgaea Complete for iOS an exceptional port, including new features and luxuries, and is packed with quality of life improvements which help to bring an otherwise aged game into modern enjoyment. But, what really surprised us, is the interface for this otherwise complicated game (in terms of inputs) has been skillfully and effectively reworked across the board for fast, intuitive, and reliable touch interaction. New interfaces have been created to solve problems that would have otherwise existed in an adaptation. We are thoroughly impressed. This is the sort of premium title which we sincerely wished was more commonplace on the App Store. Designed with love and care for this specific interface, free of all the F2P hurdles which drag games and game design into the mud, and solidly a delight from start to finish. We do hope it is successful at this opening price point because this sort of release has been rather unprecedented in the App Store and it would be nice if that changed. And Id love to see some other popular titles from this developer. Great job!

Im so proud of NIS if you have never played the Disgaea series your missing out. High levels, custom characters, amazing story. This game is one of our favorites ever and this company has made sure that this game is worth every bit of the money spent.

The best version of a fantastic tactical RPG made perfectly accessible for mobile. Couldnt ask for more.

Only thing is there are occasional crashes when doing anything in dark assembly, still worth 5* even with that thanks to auto save. Hope to see number 2 in the future!

Please do this to the other entrees in the series especially 4 which is our favorite. And for the love of god please include auto battle from now on in the series. We only use it in the item world but for the first time we enjoy grinding in the item world and building amazingly strong items. The ai could use some tweaks in the future though. The ai doesnt know how to lift and throw and doesnt seem to make good decisions on geo tiles.

Great game, great mobile version, the auto battling isnt perfect but its hard to go back to normal Disgaea grinding now that we’ve experienced it.

Im not one to buy a mobile port of something we can buy on console since Im not a fan of mobile controls. But this game does mobile controls right which is huge to us. It takes a minute to get used to them but they are very comfortable to use.

This is one of the best game that we have played when we were little – we remember playing this on our PSP. This game introduces the word grinding to us, in video games. The moment we see this on Apple store we instantly purchased it! Thanks for bringing it after 10 years – when we are an adult now :) we really like how they introduce the auto combat and speed up feature, so we are not wasting time just playing the game on our tablet. Its also super rewarding with all the cycle & auto combat :)

When you: create a character, vote in the Dark Assembly, or fight a Shaitan dragon; there is a glitch to where you cannot enjoy the character design. We hope you guys can fix that! Thats the only disappointing thing we’ve found in the game so far.
