Downwell Reviews

We really enjoy this game its really nice if you want a casual game really fun minor button glitches overall really good 5 stars.

No problems with controls, runs great in the state its in now (mid-2021), but any chance of getting Game Center achievements? The PS4 version where we first played this has them and it really gave the game that extra bit of replay value (not that it DOESNT, beating it alone is a challenge), but achievements is that extra little bit of go-to to keep us coming back. Please?

Highly replayable, nice to look at (you can change the color palette) and easy to get into, we find it hard to find much wrong with this game. We’ve put more time into this game than we care to admit and we’ve only just beat it for the first time (great ending btw). Looking forward to hard mode. The only thing we can think of that we would change, or rather add, is a few more mods to take at the end of each mission. We found myself making the same build each drop. Other than that. We highly recommend this game to anyone considering. At only ¢99, we’ve gotten so much entertainment for the price.

To one of the best games ever made. Would love to use our Xbox remote with iOS Downwell.

Years later, Im still not tired of Downwell. The play control, sounds, and graphics are undeniably solid. The upgrades, shop system, and difficulty of the game are perfect. The game plays well on iPhone, PC, and Macbook (using boot camp), and its small footprint makes it even more attractive to have installed at all times. The touch screen controls are fine, but the game is even better with a paired controller.

We love the game but honestly we would sink way more time into it if we could only turn off the sound effects so we can listen to music while we play it!

Absolutely love this game. One huge request, even though itd be a little squished, is landscape mode. Itd be way easier to play if we could hold the phone sideways.

There are only 2 games we’ve ever played more than a month or two on iOS and this is one of them. Simple, challenging, addictive, and most importantly, elegant gameplay. We never get frustrated with the controls, rare for a mobile game. We like how easy it is to get back in to another game after you die, similar to hotline miami. No ads, nothing to buy to make the game less frustrating, just a simple, fun game you can enjoy for years.

So the very cool reference to the virtual boy is really cool.

We love rouge-likes, and Downwell is AMAZING. Love the gameplay visuals and music! Fell in love so quickly! Well done! Chefs kiss on Devolver!!!

One of the best mobile games! Request haptic feedback options. Landscape mode for when using a controller holder or Razer Kishi. ICloud saves for example: play on the road with iPhone and pickup progress with iPad and a controller.

We love this game at first we didnt like because we thought it was horror but know we think its the best game ever.

We love this game, gameplay feels smooth and satisfying, and difficulty feels hard, but accomplishable. One minuscule problem is a lot of the time when we play rogue-likes/rogue-lites like this, we like to listen to a podcast in the background as we go through run after run, and turning off the excellent music is possible, but theres no way to turn off the sound effects. We realize it would be a whole thing to go and change that now, but really our only issue with this otherwise impeccable game!

Three dollars is nothing compared to the time that we’ve spent in this game.

This game is very fun but also very difficult at the time of writing this review we have gotten only to 2-3 but we must say this game is not frustrating with its difficulty, good game worth the money.

This game is amazing its worth the $3 definitely.

Looses sound when getting a call. Otherwise great game.

Incredible! The only thing it needs now is an endless mode where your items can stack! For example having two gem attractors would make gems come from farther away!

The best iOS game in existence, period. We’ve been playing this game regularly for about a year now and we love it more and more each time we play (still havent quite beaten it yet tho lol). Intuitive yet challenging, simple yet engaging. The fast pace and permadeath also work so well for a mobile game. We love this game so much. We also love just paying a flat fee and then never seeing a single ad. Such a rare and beautiful thing. Plus, we’ve played more hours and had more fun with Downwell than we have with some full-price console games, so safe to say its well worth the price.

The game is great but what we really think its missing is a mute mode, the sound doesnt fully mute when Im jamming to music and we still hear the game sounds and sound fx. No hate to them but its always bothered us when Im at work jamming out and we want to play this game but with the noise it makes its always too overpowering. Other than that love the game! Have for a long time.

Im loving this game. Its an innovative game and Nintendo like in its multiuse moves and items that do two things. However even when we have BGM turned on, we dont get any background music. We have our volume turned up and have tried reinstalling the game but to no luck. Anyone have any suggestions?

This game is so good that we have nothing to say.

We fell in love with this game on Switch and got it immediately once we found out it was on the App Store. The game utilizes the extra vertical space of the iPhone screen perfectly and we cant praise the game design enough. It does what we love to see in games, takes a simple concept/idea and creates a game around it. The very simple art direction and color palette make the colors and sprites pop and help you track everything going on when youre falling at high speeds. Brilliant game!

Super fun game just let us turn off the audio for the game fully its very loud and we cant listen to music and play you can turn off music but not sound affects.

We love the game a lot, but the precision it seems to require from the player is frustrating at times. We enjoy difficult games, but wow. That being said, if you enjoy a challenge and learning a new game, we bet youll like this. The gameplay is addictive and fun. Just wish there was a slow mode or something.

This game is almost perfect, except that we cant play music or listen to podcasts while playing. If there was a mute option Id be in heaven.

  • In all honesty, this game is very fun and hardly gets boring. + When it does we feel like it could have used maybe other modes such as side scroller type levels or something like that. (Its just our opinion but this game is still great.) =One issue though is that the music does stop working even if the music in options is on. Thats the only problem with this game.

Everything in the game is fantastic, but we love to listen to YouTube videos in picture n picture while we play some games, and Downwell only lets you mute the music and not the annoying loud sound effects. We wish they would add an option to mute the in game sound effects as well as the music instead of just the music.

Love Downwell, and the extra screen real estate of an iPad makes sense for it, but unfortunately theres no way to reposition the buttons so they fit where your thumbs fall. If you have big hands, your only option is to keep them uncomfortably open to reach the left button, or not play at all. Basic customization would be super simple to implement and extremely appreciated.

This game is our most played game in mobile. We’ve been playing it for years occasionally and no too occasionally too. The star rating is because its giving us performance issues on iOS in two separate devices compared to android. Responsiveness and frame rates. Also, the notch area is getting cut in the iPhone 13, Id guess the newer 14s are having the same issue. Hopefully this gets addressed.

Please add a horizontal view like on switch so we can play this with our Razer Kishi.

And theyre both useless and unreliable. Maybe playable with a controller, garbage without. Probably worth getting on a real games console instead.

The game is great and we love that they finally added controller support but it seems the update is missing one key feature to make it a great gaming experience on iOS, and thats cloud saves. Controller support and cloud saves should be a high priority for game developers on iOS and we have no idea why a developer wouldnt take advantage of said features. At least they added controller support. Maybe the next update will have it?

This game is great. It feels good, the upgrades are cool, and the graphics are really interesting. The game feels similar to titles like Risk of Rain, Enter the Gungeon, etc. Although we recently started playing, and havent gotten too far yet, Im sure the game has tons of content.

One of our all time favorite games ever and one of the few games we will buy over and over because of just how good it is. Devolver Digital really knocked it out of the park with this one.

We really love this game. We like how every single thing in this game does at least two different things, like how your gunboots not only attack things, they also slow you down. It makes for a game that is super simple, but takes forever to get old. Really just a smartly designed game overall.

We game has amazing graphics, great gameplay and just amazing! But if they would add a well editor to make and share your Wells would be a great feature.

Best game we’ve played on the AppStore yet, worth the 1$

The controls for this game are very simple and the concept is straight forward. This game allows for some really fun and fast paced gameplay. Its a great game to just pick up and play. You dont need a block of time for it.

We’ve had this game for longer than we’ve ever kept any game downloaded for, probably all games on our iPhone combined for that matter. After years of playing we finally made it to the last boss. Not because its too hard, its not, its fair with its snappy and crisp, ultra responsive controls that make every mistake your fault and your fault alone. We’ve never play an iOS game that performed better and had 0 input lag like Downwell does. Its genuinely designed to keep you playing and coming back to enjoy another round and attempt to find out what is at the bottom of the well, if anything at all. The upgrades dont carry with you at death, you amass them every time you reach a new level/depth each run through. The color palette swap was a HUGE part in keeping us playing and engaged as the more colors you unlock, the more complex and varied the next one becomes. Besides the incredible gameplay of course lol It rewards you for playing and doesnt lock anything away behind progression that could hinder you in jumping down the well for the first time and beating the game. But we promise, you wont. Seriously, you wont lol its hard. But hard in an incredible way, not artificial to pad length. Only thing locked is visual perks that change the aesthetic and also different play styles. Which can change gameplay dramatically if you want a new way to play or challenge to unravel. And the gunboots. We could talk about them forever. So many different kinds. Although our only advice or WANT would be for the devs to include a DLC pack of MORE gun variations in the future. The game is perfect the way it is but as an option to enhance and switch up a game we’ve played and sunk prolly 500-700 hours into over the years, Id love MORE GUN MODS. Id pay double maybe triple what we payed for the game originally for the option to load the game with even more crazy guns to find when descending down the well. It would give a boost of content and happiness to an already incredible game, and base of players that have been itching for an update to a game that they love so much. We even love the game so deeply it has become the only game we’ve ever bought cross-platform other than Stardew Valley and even ended up enjoying the game even more on our Switch. This is a mobile game at heart and its a mobile game that is worth $15-$20, hands down, its that good. We’ve never seen it priced above $3 dollars ever. We really think its one of the most underrated and under appreciated games of all time. And just one of the best games of all time for that matter. Stylized with incredible use of retro graphics with modern effects that give it a gorgeous look and feel, and controls so responsive we couldnt believe that we had never noticed another game that matched its precision. We love this game, truly we do. We hope someone thats on the fence on wether they wanna spend a couple bucks on a game on their iPhone reads this and is persuaded because its MORE than worth it for the price theyre asking. Theyre Essentially giving it away for free if you ask us. We want Downwell to get more praise and more attention and more downloads for the fun its extended to us. It and its developers deserve so much more praise; its a simple concept flipped on its boots and man does it really pull off what a game is supposed to be at its core, fun. Extremely fun.

Staying on our phone forever, really like it. If we could change anything, we would add more simple core colors. What we mean by this is simple, in the game, you can unlock color palettes to make the colors different. The first 3 are Downwell, Matcha, and Aqua (red, green, and blue respectively), these palettes dont change anything but the primary color. We would add more palettes, so we can have yellow, purple, orange, and pink types of these, or even a custom palette maker. We know you get Nikaido later on, but it isnt true to the core 3 because it changes the background. Other than that its a great game, add a tip the dev in-app purchase so we can give you more money, if the dev(s) are listening.

This is actually our first App Store review, because Downwell is that good. It is not just a great game, but a perfect game for its format. Its quick, arcade-y rogeulike gameplay with its intuitive simple controls and gameplay make it perfect to play on your phone. The combo system allows its surface simplicity to actually have a lot of depth and challenge. It really is the best mobile game no doubt, 5 stars. However, we do have complaints. As a UX change, we wish you could also turn off sound-effects. You can turn off background music, but its pretty annoying when youre trying to listen to music and you hear the little beeps and boops. As an actual gameplay complaint, while we really appreciate the simplicity we do wish their were more upgrades with more diversity. The very few in the game feel somewhat limited after enough gameplay. They havent updated this game in a year so we really hope they make a sequel with more content. This game is truly amazing and if youre gonna have 1 game on your phone it should be Downwell.

Just finished winning the game… Which we’ve managed to do maybe a half dozen times at most over the course of 5 years or so. It never gets old. Definitely for gamers of a certain generation who like challenging, high sensitivity games. Its a great combo of rogue like, bullet hell, platformer, and what used to be called twitchy. A modern day classic for sure.

This is like if mario in the 90s came to birth a child in the present.

We have never had anything bad to say about this game. It keeps us coming back with the unlocks and characters, and gets our blood pumping with gems as we fly through the increasingly difficult levels. You really care about how much health you have and upgrades will truly help you stay alive in this action packed adventure. Starting above the well on the surface really tops things off. The one thing we would like to see change is iPhone X full screen support. It would let the player see much more of the screen with less finger in the way. To be honest if you never changed it we would still play everyday. It would be nice though! Fantastic game 5/5 UPDATED REVIEW BELOW Wow, this game hasnt left our phone since we downloaded it. And thats saying a lot because we get bored of games really quickly. You would think theres not much to do, but thats the beauty of it; you are perfecting the art of falling in a way that hasnt been done before! Reaction time, patience, and a few minutes are the ingredients for a good time in Downwell. But theres nothing stopping you from playing it like a slow paced Mario level! With the characters, upgrades, shop items, and pallete options, this game can be played in countless ways! Amazing!!!!!! Oh and the only thing we would have added has been added just recently! IPhone X support!
