Description

Play cards! Kill monsters! Level Up!

Dream Quest is a roguelike deckbuilding game inspired by the likes of Ascension, Magic: the Gathering, and Shandalar. Explore randomly generated levels as one of 13 classes in short, 30 minute, sessions. One floor might find your wizard in the crypt, another your warrior underwater, and a third, your assassin stalking a volcanic wasteland. As you progress, your characters earn achievements, each making your future runs a little easier or more interesting.

Combat is a card game. Your abilities are a deck of cards that you develop as you gain power. For example, a thief starts with a handful of Slice cards and a Backstab, but can learn defensive moves like Dodge or powerful finishing moves like Coup de Grace. Carefully choosing which cards to add to your deck is the heart of the game: wise choices will find you slicing through monsters while poor ones will leave you tripping over your own two feet.

Features:
-14 different classes, with wildly different play styles
-Over 300 cards, ranging from the defensive Kick and Armor to the devastating Meteor and Curse of Doom
-More than 70 monsters carefully catalogued in the Bestiary as you encounter them
-Infinite replayability – easily 50 hours to see the majority of the content
-No In App Purchases – the price of the game is the price of the game. Everything is unlocked only by playing.

Reviews of Version 1.0 have been fantastic! Examples include:

"Don’t be fooled by its simplistic stick-figure art – Dream Quest brings together roguelike dungeon-crawling and deckbuilding to create a truly unique challenge"
-IGN

"This game is really one of a kind. The mix between rogue-like and cards is really well done…Kudos to the dev for such an innovative and challenging game"
-Mike32, TouchArcade

"If you can get past the simplistic graphics, you’re looking at a very interesting, strategic game. I’ve already lost a few hours to it – the kind of hours where you wonder where the time went. Outstanding game!"
-Citronaut

Dream Quest Reviews

Fantastic deck builder/dungeon crawler. We’ve got nearly every board game on the app store downloaded, from Agricola to Dominion to Brass. This is the game we keep coming back to. Brilliant design and tons of content.

Been playing games since Atari and was a magic the gathering nerd. We buy more games than have time to play. This is our favorite game period and then slay the spire soon after. Probably have over 1k hours of play on this as well as on Steam. More you play and learn what cards work rite and unlock them it opens the game up. This game is all strategy with a little luck in deck building. You have to have a good brain to get good at this one. The boss and elite fights can be hectic. But as long as you figure out and know what cards work best you can eventually succeed!

This game is a work of game design art. It’s probably the best "phone game" we have on our phone. You can play it quickly but it is amazingly, amazingly deep. Thank you Peter! Please make another one.

Seriously. Excluding console ports like Final Fantasy Tactics and KotOR, this is our favorite game on our phone. Dozens or even hundreds of hours have disappeared over hundreds of playthroughs. The achievement system is innovative and engaging. The art, while simple, has a lot of charm. The gameplay is unique and insures you never get bored. And the struggle? Oh, its real. It took a long time to beat the game with each class, and as far as actually taking the legendary Lord of the Dream to 0 HP, in our hundreds of games we have done it exactly three times. A poison-loving Wizard, a Shark Bite and Three Wishes-spamming Scientist, and a Dragon run with unlimited mana and a few Shrinks on hand. We fully intend to be playing this game years from now… Unless the dev finally gets a sequel out.

Honestly we havent been able to put our phone down since installing the game! Slay the Spire was definitely inspired by this game. Once you get past the charming art style the mechanics are amazing!

You can see when playing the Hearthstone Dungeon run where a lot of the creative talent is coming from. Very simple and also very complex game design. We got this game as soon as we saw his name and have only regretted the life we have sacrificed to play this instead.

We played this game for about 2 years. Some people would argue the game is unbalanced. It is true. Some classes are naturally weaker than others in terms of probability of beating the final boss. However, it doesnt mean they are weak when you get all key cards for them. Warrior and paladin are hard to beat the game because they require more specific key cards but we once killed the Lord of the Dream in our first turn using warrior and paladin with scimitars and bleeders. The only annoying thing is that sometimes enemies can happen to have ability to exactly counter your build. For example, vampire boss is immune to poison when you choose poison build. You can only concede and restart your next run.

We’ve played too much of this. Our family is concerned for us. Id tell them its no big deal, but we havent found our way out of the dungeons yet. Ill keep trying and hopefully see our children again. Someday.

Do NOT be fooled by the art style: Dream Quest is the real deal. The game design of this deckbuilder rivals anything out there. If youre looking for a deck building game packed with interesting mechanics, this is absolutely for you.

Our most played game, and we’ve had this game for years and still play it daily. So much fun and challenging.

Look past the graphics, this is a deep and satisfying card game / dungeon crawl. There are many strategies to learn and greatly varied enemy decks to cope with. It’s hard! We’re a seasoned gamer who’s used to beating a game and moving on, and this one kicks our butt. But it’s progressive because as you fulfill achievements more powerful talents and cards get added to the pool. Even if you were to claim "mastery" it would still be replayable because you’re always having to do your best with what you find — you can’t just tunnel a particular approach and force a win.

This game is pretty much perfect, save for some UI sizing. We’ve played it for well over 100 hours by now, and our only ask would be a sequel <3.

We’ve played through this game hundreds of times. Maybe even nearing a thousand. The only negative thing about this game is that its so unique, we cant find anything else to fill the hole this game has left. The bad graphics add to the charm and uniqueness of this game. We rarely leave reviews – especially good ones. But this game really is the best game we’ve played on our iPad.

We passed by this game dozens of times in the App Store, always convinced that the lousy art told the whole story. How good could it be if it was just stick figures? ALL OF THE GOOD! How can this be the only game this guy has made? We’ve never seen a rouge-like with such perfect balancing, mechanics, and charm! And believe you us, we’ve played more than a few rogue-likes in our day. * unearned smarmy grin* Buy this game. Buy it. Do it now, while Im watching.

We’ve been playing this off and on for years now and it’s never lost any of the fun. Rogue like plus deck building is a great combo.

Just like slay the spire. No in app purchases. Beat the game over 30 times. Amazing.

One of the most fun games on mobile. If Ascend had a baby with a rougelike, this would be the result.

We normally don’t play games that look outdated. This one is amazing, for us to say we’ve put 10+ hours into a mobile game is no small feat.

No other game has delivered as much value for our money.

This is, bar none, the greatest iOS game of all time. We’ve dumped hundreds of hours into it since 2014 and we still regularly reset the achievements and do it all from scratch again. There have been many imitators but there is only one Dream Quest. Best dollar-to-gaming-enjoyment value ever in our entire life.

Art is not top notch but the game mechanics are solid with tons of replayability. This app has never left any of our many iDevices.

This dude deserves every cent he makes on this. Its really good.

This game is awesome! The only thing that would make this game better is if the dev or someone would port it over to Android. The only bad thing we can say about this game is that it will eat up your time, so play wisely!

This game is top tier! Tons of depth and replay ability. Worth every penny, a must buy if you like deck building RPGs.

This game has amazing depth to it, especially after unlocking the more special rule-changing classes, braving the hardest difficulty to take on a very ultimate endgame boss. It may seem difficult at first, randomly unfair and you will get stuck in unwinnable situations. But endure, spend your achievement points unlocking cards, permanent passives and traits (Dont waste on reviving yourself)… And the amount and weight of the decisions you can make in game is amazing. Each character class is diverse in practically every way too, and not just skin deep. To think we found this game as an alternative for SLAY THE SPIRE not being on iOS (yet). Its actually much better in all areas except for visual/sound presentation. Its a real shame that many will overlook this true gem cause of that. Which is why we decided to actually write a review and promote it everywhere we go. It should not be missed!

This game is so clever that people have made a living selling Dream Quest knock-offs. Not sure why Peter has not made a sequel. Maybe he is too busy rolling around in his well deserved money. We have died more times playing this game than any other yet we cant stop playing. Buy this game if you have thick skin!

People see the graphics and move on but this game is frickin awesome. If you like rogue-like deck builders, this game deserves a lot of love!

Best roguelike AND best card game we’ve played. Thoroughly solid mechanics. Just enough random chance that you do better in some runs than others, but that we’ve never screamed at it in dejected frustration. If we’re rolled a bad game, nonetheless it seems "fair" somehow. And for a game with so much random, there’s definitely skill to it, and we’ve gotten progressively better over time. The achievements are always just barely reachable, and compelling to go after. Solid, hugely replayable game mechanics, and a single game doesn’t last incredibly long. Serious props on this game, it’s a keeper.

Its a bold statement, yes it is. We fully believe that it is. We’ve owned this game for many years, and while its not updated (besides to update functionality), we still enjoy coming back to it now and then. Its a challenging game but one Im sure would blow up if it had a bit of attention. If you read this Dev, awesome job and thank you. Updates would be awesome.

Read the other reviews for a sense of the awesomeness that is this game. No less than the creator of Magic: The Gathering, Richard Garfield, has blessed this game with his seal of approval. And even the graphics have a heartwarming story – the designer wanted to involve his young daughter in the creation of the game. And so we have the whimsical imaginings of a child to accompany us through the best gameplay ever. Its a tough game folks, but stick with it. The more cards you unlock, the more the game blossoms. Im still figuring out the nuances of how best to use some cards after years of playing this game.

We absolutely love this game and we play it all the time but there are some cards we think are over powered like the demons corrupt card or the wraiths soul crush (if it hits you once you will lose your defense cards and then it can hit you again and again)

We love this game. Despite the weak graphics, its actually quite excellent and if you enjoy deck building games, this ones awesome. The RPG elements are icing on the cake.

We were skeptical at first but decided to give it a try. Glad we did! One of our favorite purchases now!

This game is a robust dungeon crawler with combat resolved via decks that are customized from a starting class over the course of a 30 minute adventure. The plot is nonexistent, but the game systems are fun and it has tons of replay value-theres much variety between classes and within each class. If you havent already, check out Night of the a Full Moon for a spiritual successor that is a much lower challenge but still fun.

It’s been years now, and we are still playing this game. The graphics are hilarious, the gameplay is incredibly deep and merciless, but there are so many achievements to unlock and each one improves the game experience just a little bit more. If you love a well-crafted game, have a sense of humor, and can handle the occasional crushing defeat, this is absolutely the game of the decade.

We have downloaded and deleted this game 4 times. Each time we deleted it was because we couldnt stop playing. Superbly done! The value is incredible. Our one wish would be a mode after unlocking everything that you could just fight dreamer with a deck you choose to build.

Like other reviewers we are quite a fan of this game. We would have payed more than 2.99 for it. The balance in this game is incredible but begs to be played intelligently. We’ve grown quite fond of the simplistic art and honestly enjoy it just as much as some other games on the market with very detailed artwork. We cant wait till we get past the second level and get more achievements. Serious kudos to the developer and to his family for their contribution to the game. Has officially taken first above all other games on our phone. Well done!

This is an amazing game, highly recommended. However, devs, please ad more content!!

Came across this while reading the updates to Ascension. Saw the reviews so figured it was worth a shot. Like other say, don’t let the graphics fool you. It’s a real deep game in the genre of Slay the Spire though this game is older than StS. Our only concern is that it hasn’t been updated in awhile… But we’re still working through the content so we’re not worried (nor bored!)

So this is a really engrossing game after you get over the graphics. The deck building mechanic is really fun and infinitely replayable.

Slay the Spire was TOTALLY informed by Dream Quest. Like another reviewer said, we too have passed by this game dozens of times while searching for a new rpg/roguelike fix. We finally took a chance after playing dozens of others and bought it. Holy crap, this is hands down the best rpg/card/roguelike game on the App Store, and its far better than any of the others! We are a person that loses interest very quickly in games, especially mobile games, but this one has the staying power of the old final fantasies and legend of Zeldas, its that good! The only thing we wish the developer would update is to make the game use the full screen space of the iPhone X. As it stands, it uses a very small portion of the screen, so its a bit hard to see. That is the only complaint we can level against this masterpiece. Buy it, right now. Do it. DO IT.

Dont let the graphics put you off on this wonderful game. ( we actually like the simplicity) This card/rogue/board game is so amazing we’ve been playing for days straight… Clear a level close the app and reopen again later. The progression is spot on and the different cards are fun. And FREE with no ADDs! Come on, what are you waiting for!!!!

Not much to look at, but this is a deep, challenging roguelike deck builder. Dropped one-star only because difficulty is primarily due to rng which results in impossible to win games that no matter how carefully and thoughtfully you play, you will lose.

This game is amazing. Its got practically everything you can ask for. Long Term Progression, Card Collection, Rogue-like, Achievements, Exploration, Classes, and easy to understand game mechanics. The game itself doesnt have beautiful card art but honestly it makes us enjoy the game a little more only because it feels like something Id make. We have a few suggestions to make this game 5 stars. 1. Add more classes and more cards. 2. When picking Random for character select allow us to actually see which character it is before choosing our first floor bonus. 3. After playing for awhile we realized how difficult it is for us to truly enjoy our deck building. Add more levels and maybe have Missionaries Heal for some Gold as well. 4. Changing Teleport while on Cooldown to Rewind. If pressed again you can move back to where you originally pressed Teleport. Prevents from getting stuck behind a monster thats literally impossible to beat. 5. Have an oasis on each floor maybe 75% of the time. 6. When the character levels up it should give them the option to take neither level up option. We would also enjoy a free card upgrade for every 3 levels. 7. It would be cool to have the option to upgrade spells. 8. Didnt realize but Level 10 is the cap. This really hurts if you are taking the Ding Talent, maybe allow for any experience gained from monsters at the end of the fight gets turned into Health or Gold instead.

So there we were looking for a cheap game on the AppStore and we had a few bucks. Wasnt sure what to get so we saw this and its graphics and simply had to find out what this was about, there was no way it could be good, right? Wrong! This game is an absolute blast. The mechanics are fun and making a finely tuned deck is super satisfying. However there is one down side. This game can be VERY RNG dependent. Its nice and fair most of the time but when this game doesnt want you to win there is NOTHING you can do about it, no amount of skill can save you from bad luck.

Not that it needs it but what u pay for is what u get. If an iOS update makes this unplayable then good luck. This dev has not touched this app once in the last several years. That said, its not half bad if u dont care about graphics.

Id love to rate it higher, but its not a fair game. Some situations there are no solutions, and there always should be. Otherwise its a complex and enjoyable game to play.

This game deserves 5-stars, no brainer. But this game literally is played on the half of the screen on XS Max. Not even Plus size, literally half of the screen. Not sure what the deal is but needs an update. Crazy thing is, its optimized for the big iPad Pro. As soon as its updated, Ill give it 5 stars and become its biggest advocate. But until then, people with newer phones, stay away :(
