Senet is a board game from predynastic and ancient Egypt, it is the earliest known record of a backgammon , checkers and chess like games.
The oldest hieroglyph representing a Senet game dates to around 3500 BC.The full name of the game in Egyptian was meaning "The game of passing".
Games have been around for thousands of years, but none are older than the ancient game of Senet, invented by the Egyptians roughly 3500 or 5000 years ago. It is believed that this two-player board game originated as a popular form of recreation with both royalty and peasantry. But by the mid-13th century BC, Senet had evolved into a more religious ritual. Some depictions from this time period forward show the game being played not by two people, but rather as a deceased player competing against an invisible adversary, interpreted by some to symbolize the deceased players own soul.
The board has become a metaphor for the afterlife with pawns moving across the board just as a soul moves through layers of the netherworld after death. Reaching the final space and leaving the board is the goal of the game, just as reaching Horus and leaving the netherworld was the goal for the Egyptians after their death for attaining rebirth with the gods Isis & Osiris, Sekhmet & Bastet holding the Egyptian Ankh or the papyrus scepter.
The game board consists of 30 squares or slots, arranged in 3 horizontal rows of 10. Pawns move from left to right through row 1, then drop down and move from right to left through row 2. Dropping down again, pawns move from left to right along row 3 and finally, off the board. The game uses the rules of timothy kendall in his game, Passing Through the Netherworld :The Meaning and Play of Senet,an Ancient Egyptian Funerary Game.
The game includes five special squares, governed by their own rules, each containing a hieroglyphic. Square 15 is the House of Rebirth; square 26 is the House of Beauty; square 27 is the House of Water: square 28 is the House of the 3 Truths; square 29 is the House of 2 Truths; and square 30, the last, is the House of Horus, the Egyptian falcon-god and lord of the sky.
Egyptian Senet is a pharaonic challenging game that combines luck, strategy, and magic features authentic photos of ancient Egyptian temples, plus artistically crafted graphics and animation of an ancient stone game board and pieces, set in an echoing,tomb-like chamber.Ritualistic music plus sound effects of stone pieces moving recreate the atmosphere of predynastic Egypt. The App’s Icon shows the Egyptian Queen Nefertari playing Senet in her tomb, she was the great wife of the pharaoh Ramesses II(Ramses)Rio. Also many Egyptian Queens have a similar photos playing Senet such as Cleopatra,Nefertiti the great royal wife of Akhenaten, and the Queen Hatshepsut the wife of Thutmose II.

Egyptian Senet Reviews
Would like to have an option to play against live opponents.
Excellent new game to learn. A lot of fun. Somewhat (ish) like backgammon.
In todays world of now – this is an excellent game to relax and challenge your wits. Great gameplay and enjoyable. In the next update would love to have a games win/games lost counter.
It really gets fun when you make more difficult to play.
Cant really comment on the rules since NOBODY really knows how it was played. Our only wish is that it would be faster. We hate waiting for our turn.
This game is great for passing some time while having a bit of fun. Like the Egyptian theme.
Is it possible to give this game an online option? Specifically online asynchronous. This would be a superior game with that option.
We were really enjoying this game. However, with 1 player it seems that every game starts with a 2, then the opposition gets 1, 5, 1, and multiple plays with multiple throws. We feel like we know what the moves are now.
Good game. Totally loved it. Absolutely terrific!
This is a great game! Paying the two dollars was totally worth it.
As we mentioned, quite a game for how simple it is. The art is beautiful to look at. The music is thoroughly enthralling (especially when you reach the conclusion of a match). And we had never even heard of Senet until we downloaded this. Very, very well-done!
We’re Egyptian and this is awesome.
We love ancient Egypt and this game is beautifully done.
Great Ancient Egyptian game. Makes us feel like a part of history learning how to play. The computer has multiple difficulties and you can do 2 player if you want. Our only quarrel with it is we wish the perspective was a little higher so we could tap on the pieces easier on our phone. It’s a bit difficult selecting the ones in the back row. Love the music and atmosphere. Overall solid game.
Great game! Built our own board at home also using these rules! Very Fun!
Gameplay is much faster than previous versions. We love the intro with the creepy voice.
We have played this game for MANY years and this app was so good we tried the different levels….. Going to the hardest and winning (shocker) we went back to the mid-level and ever since then we won once out of 43 games. What the heck?!? Please change the algorithm to be fair play.
Got this just to learn about Egyptian games then became addicted to outwitting the computer player.
Wow this game is awesome love it.
This game is fun and great to play. Easy to learn and the graphics are great. The music is lovely, too. We don’t usually like writing reviews but for this game we really wanted to.
We recently learned of the existence of Senet thru another app. Researched and then found this app. First, we love this game… Has to rank as one of our favorite board games now. And this app is perfect. Good visuals, good options (for turning off the music and the hints if you wish.). We do feel like the AI cheats a little bit as he always seems to get the toss he needs right when he needs it, particularly in the final stretch of the game… But you cant have everything. :-). Great job on the app… Thank you. Well worth the cost. We could do without the scary sounding voice greeting upon start up. The only thing we would change is to tilt the view so you looking a little more from the top down, we occasionally hit the wrong piece by accident when they are behind another.
Love the new music, graphics and sound effects, too! A simple game to learn but very challenging to play. We play at least once a day. A great app, we totally recommend it!
Great Serendipic Strategy….
This game is both challenging and fun. It takes a short learning curve to understand the rules. The game is well-made, and has great replay value. We would recommend this game to all of you.
Very enjoyable game with fun details. It also seems like a very faithful recreation to the original game!
Nice job on function and graphics … Fun to play.
Like the game a lot, so we bought it on Amazon.
This is the best of the Senet games we’ve come across. The developer did an incredible job. Game play is smooth, challenging and fair. Design is gorgeous. This is one of our favorite iPhone games. There’s a reason Senet has been around for thousands of years; it’s not hard to learn, but the strategy is challenging (without being overly frustrating). Great job, developer, on a great implementation of this classic!
We knew about this game for a long time and this is one of the best adaptations we know of for the iPad. Very easy to learn and an absolute blast to play. We enjoy playing it with our kids. The music is very nice as well. Keep up the great work!!
Easy to learn but not so easy to win. You can be way ahead and things turn on a dime during the last couple of plays. The sore losers who want their money back should try playing as two players and see how they fare. Maybe they just arent as skilled as they think they are. We win about 40% of the time, and the game can swing in our favor at the last minute. So this game keeps our interest way more than most.
Im knew to Senet, but this app makes learning the game easy… And FUN!!!
This game was fun to play and not too complicated.
Great game! Only one comment.. The ability to change difficulty level is not obvious enough.
This game is a ton of fun and a bit nerve wracking. We’re a huge fan of Egyptian mythology and it’s interesting to play the fabled game that determined the fate of souls.
Very challenging and cool to play a game over 3,000 years old. Would be nice if it kept a WL record but other than that worth the .99.
Very interesting History. Good game play. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has the actual game in their collection.
First learned to play on an android and we were really happy to see it available for our new iPhone. Easy to play, great for one person, great graphics and just plain FUN .
It does not take up very much battery life when playing and the sounds are good and plays excellently.
One of the best games we’ve played. Love it.
Might be more fun than actual board game, although we bought this and the other competing one available (Deluxe, which doesn’t offer a two player option) to help us learn the game, rules & strategy. Graphics are definitely five stars and the moving pieces on this game sound like heavy blocks of stone scraping across the tomb floor, which is very cool. Egyptian Tomb Music is entertaining, but can be turned off if desired. Highlighting option to show available moves is clean and helpful in learning the legal moves under various board situations. A little more detail in the rules might be helpful to those serious about learning the game strategy, but that would just be icing on the cake (or gold leaf on the mummy’s shrine as the Egyptians would have expressed it). This is really a nicely done package !! UPDATE:After playing for a few days, we became aware the rules of this game version do not require the top row to first be emptied of a player’s pieces for the player to score by removing any pieces off the board, nor does it feature the rule whereby three or more pieces in consecutive spaces create a total block such that an opponent cannot pass, regardless of the throw count. These are both important features in the commonly accepted game rules referenced by scholarly students of the game on-line, and make it more complex, which is helpful in giving a fairly short track race-type game a more strategic component. We’re not changing our star rating because the game is still fun and otherwise deserves it, but developer might want to consider these modifications or offer them as optional settings.
We really like this game very much. We play it too much!
This is a wonderful, fun, challenging strategic game. We would recommend it to anyone and plan on purchasing the actual game board. The only reason why we didn’t give it five stars is because there are still some aspects of the game we don’t understand. Don’t get us wrong, there are instructions and it’s easy to pick up and we’ve become quite good at gameplay but there are some moves that we don’t quite comprehend like why some throws only allow certain pawns to move and not others, in a way it doesn’t get in the way of gameplay because the computer makes the call but we would like to know more of how the rules work and the meaning behind some of the images on the board. The game is stable with no glitches.
