Epic Card Game – Strategy Game Review
![]()
Epic Card Game is a Strategy/Card game from White Wizard Games LLC, first launched in 17th February 2020.
It’s rated 9+ and currently has 104+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Epic Card Game Stand Out
Epic Card Game is a fast-paced card game of fantasy combat designed by Hall of Fame Magic players Rob Dougherty and Darwin Kastle. It has all the amazing game play and beautiful art of a digital trading card game, but instead of having to chase down hard-to-find cards, you get unlimited copies of every card.
In Epic Card Game, each player starts the game with a score of 30 health. Your goal is to eliminate your opponents by reducing their health to 0.
You start the game with a hand of five cards, and draw a new card at the start of your turn. Your cards represent powerful champions that will fight for you or game changing events you can use to thwart your opponent.
Each turn every player in the game gets one "gold." Some cards cost a gold to play, others are free. This means you can play any card in your hand from the very first turn. There is no slow building of resources in this game. Epic Card Game starts at full throttle!
Challenge your friends or random players around the world to as many Dark Draft, Random Deck30 Sealed, Preconstructed and Full Constructed games as you like, for FREE!

Community Insight:
No mana screw, no empty hands, cool mechanics. GREAT GAME.
We absolutely love this game. Its very simple to pick up for old M:TG players like us but its also very deep once you spend some time with it. The fact that everything to play is free is mind boggling. We like that cosmetics and tournaments are where the revenue streams are, game just needs more promotion and players to take off.
Love it, its good, etc. We wish we could disable the Someone is looking (for a pick up game) pop-up messages WHEN IM PLAYING. They prevent us from interacting with the left hand side of the board, are distracting, and irritating after a while. Our request is to provide some sort of control over those messages.
From what we have played so far this is an interesting card game. We just wish the campaign was longer. We dont want to play against other players because it is a given there will be players who has payed for very strong decks.
We own and love both of our physical copies of Star Realms and Epic. So this review is not meant to disparage the game design itself, its well done and you should download and play this game. However, do NOT spend money on this digital version of the game. About every three games, we encounter a bug that freezes the program, and we have to close it and reopen (and having to restart the match we were playing).
We downloaded the game a couple days ago and have been having fun with the campaign but we finished it and tried to jump into some real matches with our new demon deck but couldnt find a single match! Please get this game out there with adds or something cause its great but doesnt have a big player bace. Thanks for your time.
Yeah amazing cg, but had to delete because of stuck ai and not much player base – what a shame because it is a good game.
UPDATE Lowered to 2 stars. Game crashed after a winning against the Zombie Horse campaign mission on hard (specifically after the victory shield popped up). We cant recommend a game that does not at least function consistently. We love this card game, but Im having a difficult time getting into it. We beat the campaign on normal and am playing through on hard, and have had the game crash 6 different times without error while in the middle of the match. Im playing on an iPhone 11 Pro Max and have no idea what causes this exactly, but we seems to only happen on the enemy turn while the AI is thinking. This has been extremely frustrating as we have had a lot of these instances happen while Im winning and then we have to start the entire match over because it crashes. 3 stars for solid gameplay integration and fluidity of mechanics that are automated, but we cannot give a better score until the app is stable enough to play.
Not sure because it wont let us make a second account with the same email.
Takes a while to learn but its a blast! The only con is that the foils and backgrounds are crazy expensive. Why have them.
Absolutely loving this game. Ive beat the campaign, and played a couple vs battles with mono-colored decks. But by far our favorite mode is dark drafts against friends. Have had multiple games going at a time for the last couple weeks, and really enjoying it. Great system, great art, and you cant beat the price. Highly recommend for the drafting alone.
We are an experience MTG player, and Ive played numerous card battlers on iOS and computer. This ranks among the weakest ones Ive tried. The ability names are trying desperately not to infringe on copyright. The phase mechanic is not easily grasped (it seems to be a twist on MTGs). The lack of mana or another spendable resource that must be accounted for makes gameplay uninteresting in our opinion. As another reviewer noted, it comes down to who can eliminate their opponent's champions (read: creatures) first, so we liken it to if the only colors in MTG were green and red. This oversimplification on top of general user interface clunkiness drove us away from investing much time in this game. Not on the same level as Star Realms.
Mediocre implementation of a mediocre game we find the game ok, not enough interest there to play over other things we might choose. With the high power cards and one move a turn, it ends up being a slug fest where you each take one swing a turn until someone gets an edge, then its a sow all to the finish. The implementation surprised us after the best in class star realms. An odd, random campaign full of typos. Text overlays obscuring the opponents champions. Insufficient visual cues to track turn order through the many gifts in initiative each turn. Incomplete rules explanation in the tutorial and no full rules that we could fine (had to go to internet to learn, for instance, the difference between discarding and banishing and why it mattered for win conditions). Sure, we could get used to the quirks and stop passing at the wrong time, but why bother. After a few hours with the campaign, Epic has done nothing to convince us its worth the effort.
Our new favorite card game, this is how to do it RIGHT. All cards are available at the start, youre given the creative freedom to build what you want. Cant wait to see whats next for this game :) bravo to the devs.
We have experience with the physical card game since release a few years ago, and have purchased 1x copy of every release. Epic has risen into our top favorite dueling card games, pushing our MTG devotion down to tremendously. You think the game is just another Dueling card game?? Well Epic isnt just another game: its made by Star Realms creators (MtG pros), streamlined gameplay that you love with other TCGs, and wallet friendly releases. This app takes Epic to a whole new level of fun and accessibility by providing you the chance to learn the game with a polished tutorial, have access to EVERY card instantly, multiple game modes, AI and Human opponents… All for FREE! We hope the devs stick to the model of every new card release free to all users. Im fine with In App Purchases being limited to cosmetics, arena entry, and perhaps new campaign…. Would be nice if new campaigns are free though :) we originally only submitted our 5 stars for the app but want to share this with anyone who is curious about the game. Also want to address negative criticism of in another review saying AI in the campaign is busted. Not true, in our experience. We just did mission 3 of the tutorial campaign in our second try. Each campaign is a puzzle and not too difficult once you figure it out and play your cards right. Thank you WWG for an Epic app.
We have played many TCG variants, all of them claiming to be unique, and all of them fun for the most part. Many of them have optimized to get past the mana screw/flood system. But few have stepped outside of the shadow of Grandpapa Magic. White Wizard Games has not only broken the mold and created an innovative and creative card battler that doesnt rely on a Mana system, they have created it entirely free, accessible to all. We can not overstate the significance of this game, both in how it innovates the genre, and how it carries itself as an example of monetization models in mobile gaming culture. White Wizard Games, you have stolen our heart, we will support this game, our next purchase for iPad is Star Realms. Whatever you choose to do in the future, know that we will be there to support you. You guys rock.
A fantastic implementation of the game. Plays like a streamlined MTG without a lot of the issues that plague Magic. Surprising amount of depth and tremendous strategy in a compact package. And its free.
So far so good, implementation seems sound. Always enjoyed Star Realms app also from White Wizard. Our family have decided the physical version of this game was too taxing, so its great to have an AI and online folk to play now! Im hoping also that as the app holds your hand a little it might allow more players to get over the initial learning hump to enjoy the properly deep gameplay beyond. Great job guys, been looking forward to this for a while.
And its free too – wow! Ive been playing the paper version since the beginning and Im very happy to be able to play online now.
Room for improvement, but a great start so far. Would love some async functionality for multiplayer games.
This game has a surprising amount of depth with tremendous replay ability. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys strategy card games.
