Player Experience Highlights

Community Insight:

Ive been playing backgammon on line for 15 years and most of the apps Ive played on Ive deleted after a very short time because the dice algorithm was designed to make you buy more chips. Poor show, but this is a business after all. Ive played this App for 10 years or more and have slowly made our way up the leader board and have played the same players multiple times and have had an enormous amount of pleasure playing. We accepted that there would be times we felt like we shouldnt have lost and the dice were not true, but this was a rare occurrence until recently. Ive probably played 10,000 games or more and was confident that 99% of the games seemed fair; good and bad luck happen. Now the dice are now sometimes so predictable that we often call them before being rolled and the amount of doubles is absolutely absurd. We think this happened because this particular app doesnt require you to buy chips and that's bad for business. We still use the App, but the majority of the enjoyment has been robbed by this new changed algorithm. Too bad. Im now looking for an alternate app, but dont hold our hopes up that things will be better else where.

When you play the computer in expert mode, it will miraculously find a way to get a perfect role needed to hit your blot. It happens at least 80% of the time, no matter how complex the role needs to be. This game is built really well except the rolls are just too frustrating and in no way random to continue to play it.

We have played this game hundreds of times. The play is smooth and it could be a great game. Unfortunately once you are winning the game, suddenly the app starts rolling multiple doubles in a row. Im not sure why the developer feels the need to do this. They claim that the player rolls the same number of doubles, which might be true, however the game rolls doubles it can use and at critical moments. The player gets doubles that are often unusable or at times when doubles are not ideal. Its totally rigged, no matter what the developer states.

Why play competitively if that dont let you score higher than 15000. All the ones who we have a better ranking will eventually catch us. Stupid to play.

We teach statisticsthis app is a joke! If it was a casino their license will be revoked for cheating.

So if we have this right, the Roll Again feature allows the user to try and cheat the cheating game? Ive never used Roll Again because we want to believe that random means random, but that just makes us more of a sucker. Is that it? The more games we play, the worse it gets: More useless rolls, useless doubles, rolls that jeopardize pips, a dozen rolls (first roll when we get on the bar is almost always a double six) trying to get off the bar when there are three open spaces when Computer generally gets off on the first roll with one open space and pulls off miracle rolls consistently. We get smacked around over and over again, then get a game or two where we get all the breaks and start to feel like the game doesnt cheat until it starts whupping us again. Developer can (and does) repeat that the game doesnt cheat, which is what any cheater would say, but the Roll Again feature just suggests to us that if we cant beat Computer, we can join the Computer. Nah.

Aside from a few little quirks, like not saving the game state permanently, this is a fine Backgammon experience. We appreciate the quick play and the choice of board designs. The doubling decisions need a bit of work but the rest of the AI is pretty good.

A well designed virtual game. There is no in app purchases unlike other online backgammon games. Excellent players and can usually easily find other players but the computer is challenging to play against too. Well supported app. We have been playing it for 11 years and minimal technical issues.

This is by far the best backgammon game Ive played on a device. Ive been playing it for years.

Use single tap for easy fast play. Honest skill competition between actual players, and practice against the computer while you wait for a live opponent. Easy and logical control layout.

We have loved this game for years – partially because we dont need internet to use it – & best backgammon game around.

Fun game but logic is off, numerous times the computer keeps an open chip instead of going in, when it should do that. It must know Im Not going to hit it or roll what we need. You would most certainly go in your side then leave an open chip. So Im convinced that computer knows what roll is coming. Also when we play higher ranked opponent or when Im the higher ranked opponent they get better rolls. Almost guaranteed the higher ranked opponent will get the roll to hit open opponent to put them on the bar, then almost assuredly opponent will then roll a double on a spot that they cant get in on. Ive played way too many games and this happens at a statistically impossible number. Very frustrating. We know the developer will say this doesnt happen, but it absolutely does. Can someone develop an app that doesnt cheat.

We were happy to see a random roll option in the settings. Unfortunately it is not really random. As indicated by other users, you start to see patterns after a while. The rolls the computer gives itself and denies you become very predictable. Why offer the a random setting if it isnt truly random? We would love to see a developer have a truly random dice roll and control the difficulty level by adjusting the move choices the computer makes. In the expert level for example, it would always make the statistically best move. In beginner mode it would randomly make the mistakes a human might make. But most importantly, do not offer setting choices that arent truthful or accurate.

Developer, received your response advising how to remove the Roll Again optionis ridiculous and non professional ! Read our initial review, carefully this time, Ill say it again, FIX the game FIRST then remove this silly additionhope you got it nowyour game is certainly RIGGED This Roll Again additional option doesnt make it better, it truly is an irritant! Fix it and take away this Roll Again nonsensical addition. Sorry guys, lame excuses, since we are a statistician we can very clearly tell you created a faulty game, no desire to fix it? Ok, just dont come up with such lame excuses insulting the intelligence of many players. So be it, its a waste of time to try again. Ill download another one.

The game cheats. We can very consistently call what the computer will roll, we can count on it. Im done with this App. Ill find another App with games that dont cheat. The Developer that answers these comments should come clean.

It is unfathomable how many doubles the computer rolls vs. The user. Especially once all pieces are in its home court.

If you do not subscribe to their yearly plan you will find yourself restricted and shut out of the Game Center.

The computer get way more doubles than the player.

We wasnt sure if suspicions of cheating were observation bias or not so we captured stats on hundreds of games. One thing we tracked is not the number of doubles but the quality of the doubles. While somewhat subjective we can all agree that double sixes bearing off is much better than doubles sixes when getting off the bar with six blocked. We rated hundreds of examples and computer scored much better. We also tracked how often, based on points covered, the odds of getting of getting off the bar in the FIRST attempt which is critical to avoid the opponent setting up a position. Based on over 500 cases, the computer is successful at least 15% more often. The sample sizes are statistically significant. Have played this game for years but would prefer a game where we dont have to plan for the computer getting lucky rolls at higher odds than normal.

Love the game when you play it freezes. . Everything else is awesome. It freezes and also sometimes open not open due to network.

First of all, the graphics & play of game is excellent. Having said that, the level of cheating, or computer favoritism is unmatched in any game we have ever played. We really liked playing this game. But it Is so incredibly frustrating we finally deleted it. Its really a shame. This could be the best! But everything people have said about computer luck of the dice is true! We communicated with the creators and they said they could not convince us it was totally fair, and had completely random rolls! HA! If you want to be frustrated, and enjoy cheating on a grand scale? This games for you.

Whenever Im ahead our opponent just seems to roll a bunch of doubles to finish before us. Awful app.

You can be winning the game and every time the computer will give it self 3 dbls in a row in the home to beat u. It will roll u the one move out of many options to keep u on the bar and it will magically get the one and only move available to get out every time! Can someone just make a version that plays fair? We just want to play and win or lose the fair realistic way.

Lately if we left the game open on iPhone X it would freeze and we would have to restart the phone to get it working again. We love the game but if we cant continue where we left off, whats the point.

We, for the most part loved this game. But when the game wants to double you and you accept the double, it then just annihilates you with the most ridiculously stacked moves. It just stopped being fun. We actually was playing the game to beat the cheating moves and its kind of ruined the regular strategic way we used to play.

We will never be convinced these are random rolls of the dice. It is so unrealistic we can no longer recommend this game and no longer enjoy it. What a joke. Computer gets the roll it needs 90% of the time and player's doubles are usually worthless. We would think it would be easier to develop a real game.

This used to be our favorite game, but now it is rigged. The rolls are clearly NOT RANDOM ANYMORE. What a shame. Why did you guys break this great game.

There is nothing random about the dice roll when set to random. Five star game if random gets fixed. Why cant the developer fix it when so many reviews have provided them feedback.

If you dont believe in miracles now, you will after you see the "lucky" rolls the Computer gets.

This game does not have consistent random dice rolls. We have played this game hundreds of times and see the flaws. It is programmed to give you doubles at times when it is no consequence to the computer. When playing against the computer, it miraculously beats the odds and always gets the dice roll. But you rarely do. No one will convince us this game isnt rigged.

In the expert range the computer ALWAYS hits a single man… Impossible odds. Its so unbelievable that we will delete the app bc its no fun.

Best app for playing live backgammon online. Latest version fixed bugs that cut short our games. Much better reliability now. Easy to use to play opponents worldwide. Nice features. Keeps games moving. Easy to see.

We learned how to play competitively at the highest level from this app – we are not the person who owns this app – we had bought the app twice – closed the icon & lost the game – it would be fair to tell this player how his sister can get it back without paying a 3rd time.

User friendly, quick, covers all the bases. Takes too long to get a match. After 5 minutes, we leave. Also, our original post was edited to delete our waiting complaint.

It seems that in more advanced modes, the computer simply has luckier rolls. High doubles repeatedly. Not a very satisfying experience. The interface is good and provides better experience when playing a person rather than computer, we.e., pass the board.

This used to be an awesome bg app but no more. The new versions have gotten so bad. The computer cheats on the dice rolls something awful to the point it is no long fun. And our multiplayer option no longer works. We are so disappointed.

Don't bother playing the computer. Other than simply frustrating the end user, we don't see the point in allowing the computer to roll anything other than randomly. Why not fair dice.

Completely rigged. Theres nothing random about this app at all. Don't waste your money.

The computer gets the dice it wants when it needs it and we get the worst rolls for the position Im in. Ef you FaceMe backgammon.

The unbelievable rolls the computer gets on a regular basic just make this unplayable and not work our time. Many other well made enjoyable apps out there to play. This is just plain frustrating and no fun. After awhile you can guess the rolls.

We became highly suspicious when it seemed like the computer would miraculously get the exact roll needed in critical situations. "Expert" mode doesn't mean that if the human is getting ahead that the computer should cheat just to make it appear more competitive. To prove our theory, we started noting how often the computer would get the exact die roll it needed (many times when only 1 exact roll will work). Let's put it this way: if the computer wasn't cheating, take it to Vegas! To further test our theory, we also chose manual rolling and used random.org to roll the dice for us. Amazingly, the computer was far less lucky. Besides the obvious cheating, the game has some bugs and rules issues. In manual dice rolling mode, the computer still is]misstated on rolling the first roll. Doubling is not allowed when one player is one point from winning a match. Finally, the AI is terrible. The computer will accept a double in the worst of circumstances. It's rule is basically as long as you are not ahead by more than 30 pips, it will accept. You could have one or more of his men on the bar and be blocking every open spot and he will still accept a double. We guess this is the human's counter to the computer cheating the die rolls.

Stay away. Very frustrating game to play. We won't call it cheating but the computer gets all the rolls it needs. No fun.

Game Center games crash literally every single time you play after a few moves. There are free bg apps if you want to play vs a computer. Wish we could get a refund.

Loved this app – but for some reason the online version quit working. If you want to play other players, you won't be able to access that part.

Quick no frills play! Easy to find someone online to match up with. Needs enhancements such as turn-based mode, tournament play, and player rankings, etc.

The game is fun. It works. However, you could say the AI cheats. On the advanced setting, the AI about 75% of the time will throw the best possible throw. It can make you want to toss your iPad. Regardless we still play daily. We would give it a 5/5 if we were not convinced of these shenanigans.

Good game, smooth play, horrendous algorithm in expert mode. This is a good game if you are super casual and want to play on easy mode all the time.

We have played this app for years, mostly to verify what we now know. The dice are rigged to favor the opponent's (AI's) roll. After a study, we determined that 90% of the time if we have an open blot, the AI makes the perfect roll, hitting our piece. Please use a random number generator — this is not rocket science.

Don't waste your time, dice are rigged, you are forced to open up,then opponent gets the perfect dice,BS game!!!!, this happens 90% of the games you will play.Totally unrealistic.

Dice rolls favor opponent. Opponent moves to fast. Playing is not user friendly.
