Fateful Lore Reviews

We love the game! Controller support would take it to the next level though.

Dragon Quest and Earthbound are among our all time favorite games with DQ being our favorite ever. This game is basically a mash between the two. A cartoony but warrior esc style and some funny enemies. Amazing game great job dev. People wanna give games it less stars based on personal issues with what they like instead judge it based on the actual quality. No bugs it is polished for an 8 bit inspired game. Only complaint would be the mana. Way to weak for the cost. Also would love aesthetic attack animations it would keep us addicted longer but dev just know in our mind you made your masterpiece and we hope you take take good care and or even add to it. We would love to hear a Fateful Lore 2 coming. Developer please add controller support the virtual pad is great and one of the best but we would be more immersed if we could use a controller.

We played through this in around 8 hours. Funny dialogs and entertaining. We hope they make another one.

We’ve been looking for an 8bit rpg for mobile to play that was actually good!!! Just started and Im already hooked!!!! This reminds us of undertale and earthbound!!!!!!!!!!! Im currently planning our own video game!!! And seeing as how simple but amazing this game is….. It gives us a lot more motivation!!!!!!!!!! To the creator of this game, you should be very very very proud of yourself!!!!

We will say that it reminds us a LOT of the old Legend of Zelda games because of the storyline and evrything, we just recently downloaded it and already love it.

We became unreasonably happy after seeing the grave that said "here lies link"

This is a fantastic simple JRPG that is a throwback to the top-down 8-bit era. It is simple in many ways: theres only one hero (no party members like mages, healers, archers, knights, etc.), no classes of people (you are who you are!), no side quests, no clear way we found to guard against effects like being poisoned and paralyzed by enemies (Id usually just load up on potions). That said, this is an incredibly fun and rewarding game in terms of retro rpg gameplay. We’ve played quite a few retro rpgs and this may be our favorite. The battle gameplay is good. The quest is straightforward. Not a lot of wandering around figuring what to do next. That said, there are people to talk to in each village, along with some good humor and Easter eggs. And of course treasure chests to find, which is always satisfying. Most of them require a little bit of looking but none are impossible to find. Controls are great: simple directional d-pad with just a few buttons to push. The text windows fit well in this retro vibe. The land is very well laid out. Good variety of mountains, forests, plains, sand, etc. Settlements are neither too close nor too far away, and theres a good mix of caves and dungeons to explore and such. More great features: immediate save option (as well as an auto save), good progression of weapons, armor, enemies, etc. Simple use of potions and spells is great. Ads are about an unobtrusive as we’ve seen in a free iPhone game. Good options for exploration (without getting lost; its pretty easy to find your way around the land) and some grinding (not too much but just the right amount). If youre looking for a few hours of classic retro JRPG fun, or would like to get introduced to the classic retro rpg, its hard to think of a better option than this gem of a game.

Reminds us of FF1 and Dragon Warrior. It took us about 7.5 hours to get through. We loved the save anywhere option. Straightforward gameplay, decent music, decent storyline. Good game.

We’ve yet to beat it Im only at level 13 , the map reminds us of dragon warrior an battles remind us of earthbound . The graphics are really good theres nothing we can really say thats a negative . Great job.

Reminds us of the original Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Earthbound in its gameplay. Fun retro-style graphics and awesome retro-style music! Definitely a must play! We hope it gets ported to Evercade or the Switch in the future, Id buy it! :D.

This game is great. Takes us back to the hand held game that we played in the service when we were deployed overseas in the 90s to help with the boredom and fear. It really is a joy to play. Well done.

This game stands with a very select few mobile games that are absolutely deserving of praise. It is not a graphical masterpiece, the story is relatively basic thats kinda the point its a total throwback. This game achieves its goals perfectly. It is the perfect game for what it is. 5 stars easy. Best 5ish hours we’ve ever spent mobile gaming.

Finished the game in 6 hours. It was fun but we wish we could keep playing after the final boss. We saved right before the fight so we guess we could keep on playing and not beat the final boss, but we would like to be able to just grind and level up for no reason. There is no option to keep playing, it just says The End. Can you make an update that allows for gameplay after the final boss?

Total throwback to the original NES Final Fantasy. The only reason we didnt give 5 stars is that the movement is a bit slow. Would be nice if there was a gameplay speed option. Takes awhile to get around in the game. If you could go faster it would make it a lot more playable in less time. Played FF1 & 2 on a NES emulator that had the speed option so you could cover five times more ground in the same amount of time. Other than that gameplay graphics and storyline are awesome. Also is great that it is a completely offline game. We dont get WiFi or cell service where we work so that was a big selling point for us. If you like old school rpgs this game is for you. Takes us back to a time when games had to be fun since graphics and stuff hadnt evolved. Another great thing is that you only have to watch videos when you die.

The game is a fun and colorful homage to classic RPG style games, and it does its job incredibly well. So far, no glitches or turn-offs, (but one Ill get to in a second) and the quality is great. Its funny and unique, but we’ve been suffering through a glitch that prevented our progress. We’ve gone through multiple quests, but the hint bar in the inventory is stuck on us searching for the Wizard. That is our only problem. The game is grind-heavy, and level centric. Its good for killing free time.

A hobbyist’s homage to the rpg games of the NES, this game is fun and a real bargain if you don’t pay. At times it will seem like you’re not getting anywhere. You aren’t.

Its impossible to move with press each direction individually. It would be a lot better if you could fluidly go in whichever direction without lifting your finger.

Similar to the original Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior, to the West). Only one character (no party) and lots of grind. Advance to the next area, grind again. It just plain tedious and unfulfilling.

Due to lack of available maps in game or on an internet search we are stuck. Really frustrating. And you walk a bit too slow. This game is very similar to Dragon warrior on NES.

This game is too grind heavy and even WITH THE BEST GEAR AT THE MOMENT. You still somehow lose? Also why did you just not give like ANY info at all to let us know if the enemy is at low hp. Also one minor issue, the many boss battle is a little too hard cause you can just stuck in an infinite chain of being paralyzed and getting attacked until u die. Please make the game less grind heavy and or make the enemies easier. Games arent supposed to JUST kill time, their about having a fun time.

The design and format of this game is charming and reminds us of fantasy adventure games of the 90s, but with no map or journal/ log, and not even a compass to indicate what direction your avatar is moving, play becomes tedious quickly. The selection of monsters is quite repetitive and the storyline has almost no progression.

We paid money for a game that now has ads. They say the ads are non-intrusive, but we just got a full-screen video ad. How is that non-intrusive? Plus theres a lot of information that the app gets from you which is horrible for privacy. Why does a single player game need this?

Not a fan anymore. You made the choice to use ads and we made the choice to quit playing. Bye.

Doesnt have to be perfect so long as theyre not messing with us trying to get mtx. Five stars.

Back in 1989 we got an NES just so we could play Dragon Warrior (called Dragon Quest nowadays). We were so hooked on that game, it was – to this day – one of our favorite gaming experiences of all time. We are enjoying that same thrill we experienced so long ago with Fateful Lore… The plot, the weapons, the music, even the corny humor – all just fantastic. We admit there are some things we would have liked to see in this game (such as mapping capabilities), but Dragon Warrior didnt have those so maybe Im just spoiled. We appreciate this brilliant little game for what it is. Im grateful it isnt a subscription or gacha game, we miss the days where you just pay for the game and then you can play it as much as you want without being asked to pay again and again for weapons, gems, and so forth. Thanks to the brilliant author of this title for sharing his talents and love of old-school JRPGs… And for creating this wonderful game.

We love, love, love this title. Scratched the FF and DQ itch for sure. Its like a time machine to a simpler time where rpgs kicked your butt but kept you coming back.

Not a lot of depth in story or character build, but its fun for a simple old school RPG style game. The quest progression is a bit confusing and we wasnt always sure what to do, but figured it out eventually by exploring. A map would be nice. Doesnt even need to show your location, just something to show where towns/towers are located in the world. Overall it was enjoyable and loved the no ads thing. You dont see that much. Thanks for making it!

We think this game is fun. We’ve put about two hours into the game and feel that the story is good. The overall gameplay can definitely be improved. Not being able to see the enemies health is bad design and just plain annoying because at that point its just luck to see if you could kill any new enemy encounters. We can meet a new enemy while having the best current items, crit them multiple times, and somehow still lose the fight? How many hours of grinding do we have to do? Its VERY grind heavy. You most certainly need to have the most powerful equipment from each town to basically progress. The chances of running away we feel are super slim. Maybe its just our luck, but why do we have to constantly die to try to run away. Also, maybe slight minor quality of life improvement would be to increase the player speed overall. Feels much needed with the constant grinding and exploring.

Its a cute retro indie game. We just wish that the quest bar in the menu updated more frequently instead to show what specifically youre meant to do, & that the characters names appeared above their text when you spoke to them.

This is quite the experience to take you back! Nearly Ultima-like! Missing a mapping feature, though.. Any plans for such a thing? This is quite fun to pick up and play, with the right background music and sounds with cute sound effects and dialogue! Another element for us which is missing would the ability to move the controls up or down , especially on the iPad, for easier holding.

We havent gotten too far yet, but its a lot of fun for a mobile game. No ads, no microtransactions. Something we like is that its not too easy, although we feel it could be balanced just a little better. We think the spells are a little too weak for the mp costs to be worth using, so for most battles magic isnt worth it. So a lot of fights mostly consist of mashing attack. Another more minor complaint is that the splash screens should be able to be skipped by tapping. Or at least tapping should make them pass by faster. Nonetheless if you like retro RPGs, we recommend this. The music is pretty catchy as well, and the exploration is fun. PS: we see the bits of EarthBound inspiration in here! We love it. Also, that skeleton enemy referencing Papyrus made us lose it.

We got this app for free from a limited time price reduction. This is a pretty cute, simple RPG from an earlier age. The graphics, sound, mechanics, and story are all reminiscent of early graphical RPGs and do a good job of bringing the nostalgia. Its not what we would call a deep game, so set your expectations correctly in order to have fun. We had a good time and was motivated to finish, but there is not much to say beyond that. So, below are mostly the things we didnt like about the game. Keep in mind that none of these prevented us from wanting to finish. We finished with about 12.5 hours of play time and we wasnt rushing, so this wont keep you occupied forever. The story is the usual nonsense about magical crystals sealing an ancient evil a classic, but no surprises. There is some comedic writing here and there, but its sparse and smile-level, not laugh-out-loud. We think the creators could have leaned on this more. We mostly played with our phone on silent as we found the music a bit too harsh and repetitive, especially as we have a family to think about. There are a decent, but not huge, number of enemies, and they mostly come in three difficulty levels for each type you wont find more than one difficulty level for an enemy type in one region, however. The battle system is simple. Maybe too simple. You can equip a weapon to increase your attack and armor to increase your defense. There are no weapons or armor with special effects or attributes, and you can only get them from chests, stores, or occasional dialog with certain NPCs. There are hidden chests, and we felt that finding them was the most fun part of the game. We intensely dislike the random encounter fight mechanic, preferring RPGs with enemies we can see and choose to attack or avoid, as well as being about to sweep areas clean of enemies. Random encounters make exploring difficult, as its hard to remember where you were going when you have to fight every ten steps. This is a stylistic choice, though, as this game is emulating JRPGs specifically. We just think CRPGs are better. Finally, the spells are almost entirely useless. Their mana cost is too high compared to your maximum mana, their damage too low, and their effect duration too short, plus your mana doesnt regenerate unless you use a potion or sleep in an inn. Using a spell in combat always wastes a turn, increasing the damage you receive. Our battles ended up to be just bashing away with our weapon until our health got low, using healing spells (early to mid-game) or health potions (late game and bosses), and repeating until the enemy died. If you get the best weapon available at the time, you will do more damage per turn, ending combat sooner and taking less total damage. Endgame is nonexistent. Once you defeat the last boss, you get some ending text, the credits roll, and finally there is a The End screen. It never goes away, so you have to manually quit the game. And if you restart it, you are placed back before the boss battle. So, Im glad we played and finished, but Ill probably delete the game now as there is nothing more to do. We might have missed a secret or two, though. We have the Lypriptite armor, the spirit shield, and the blood scythe (in a secret area right before the final boss).

Theres something so charming about how simple Dragon Quest 1 was, and this nails it pretty well. We like that the battle text is more than just hit for X damage etc., and have enjoyed some of the extra lines you get from talking to npcs more than once. There are some minor-ish issues, like the notch on iPhone X+ phones covering up some UI elements, not being able to turn down the volume for the music (can only turn it off entirely), and the on screen dpad not being great.

First, thanks for the free game! Its basic but fun, but it definitely either needs a mini map or text showing what dungeon level you are on. Spoilers Let us explain: we just beat Tower 2 and went into a cave in the desert. We got helplessly lost due to it all looking the same and having a very small window to see around us. If there was text somewhere telling us what level of the dungeon we were in at least we could tel if we were backtracking or not. In the end we teleported back to the main castle and Ill have to walk ALL the way back to where we were. Not our idea of fun. Takeaways: 1. Add dungeon level text or a minimal. 2. Allow the teleport spell let us go to any visited town. Again thanks for the game. Once you make those fixes, charge $2.99 after the first tower to continue. Make some money!

Hey, so we’ve now been like searching all the walls, looking for a secret way to move forward, but we seem to be stuck? The last quest thing we did was talk to the wizard, but our quest log still says the king has told you to talk to the wizard. So we’ve been searching everywhere we can reach, 2 caves (although one leads out and then into another one), both towns, everywhere, but we cant seem to progress. And we tried to look up a walkthrough but they all end there. Is this just a beta version of the game, or am we missing something?

Very repetitive. These kinds of games typically are, but the good ones keep you invested with good storylines and/or unique mechanics. This has neither. Way too expensive for what it is.

It is nice to see a game with a inexpensive price and no ads or microtransactions. The gameplay is very reminiscent of Dragon Quest, but with modern controls. With auto-save its easy to pick up and play for even just a few minutes. Im really enjoying it!

This reminds us of growing up playing NES and SNES RPGs for hours. Next one in 16-bit then, guys?

Game looks and runs great but the notch on our 11 Pro gets in the way of the menus. That should be patched at some point.

This is a love song to games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior. There isnt much to be said other than buy this game if you want to support indie developers who have a knack of tugging on the heart strings of nostalgic gamers who grew up playing the classic granddaddies of the jrpg genre. Turn based goodness, awesome music, and a nice throwback to a time without micro transaction and paywall nonsense. Thank you!
