FINAL FANTASY Reviews

You have it on several already please!!!

We love this game so much but it would be so much better if it had controller support!

Please add controller support so fans can have a more nostalgic experience playing this game.

Thank you so much to everyone who made this game a reality. We love everything about Final Fantasy games, the stories, the music, the emotional feelings the games evoke everything. We will play Final Fantasy for the rest of our life. Thank you so much for these games. As far as this version goes if we could change anything about the game it would be to make the status effects on enemies more obvious. Some effects are obvious like when an enemy is confused they will be backwards. However when an enemy is asleep or has dark there are no signifiers. We also believe the sleep status effect on enemies should last longer so that a Saboteur play style is more viable. Thank you again to everyone at Square Enix who works hard to make these games for all of us to enjoy.

This is terrific! It fixes many of the bugs and original problems. Tons of fun lots of hours of enjoyment. Auto battle and other convenient features make it less of a grind and more fun. Many of the reviews complain about controllers which we dont understand since this is a mobile app. This has been unfairly ranked because of some weird vendetta about inapplicable controllers. 5 Stars!!

We played through this in around 15hrs and was worth every penny. Even with the original FF you get some of the warm fuzzy feelings the FF games evoke. The only downside is that it needs controller support CONTROLLER SUPPORT PLEASE.

We want to replay this game w achievements. But we can not seems to remove the data from game Centre first. Any ideas?

The game was great, our only complaint is that we got 23 out of 24 achievements. The last one must be bugged cause its for unlocking all other achievements. Hope it gets patched eventually, not a major deal though.

We love this game and this series! Finally being able to carry around the first entry on our phone to throw on whenever we need to kill some time in a waiting room or on the bus has been a godsend. Unfortunately, we are unable to access the final achievement the 15 puzzle on our iPhone 11 Pro. Im not sure if Im trying to access it wrong or if its simply not compatible, but either way that glaring dark spot on our achievement list is keeping this from being a 5-star purchase.

Just purchased the bundle to replay the first 6 Final Fantasies and was hoping to play with the backbone accessory! Controller support would be a great addition to these games!

We’ve played all NA releases of FF1 aside from the PSP version, and we have to say this one is up there. It has low grinding and great pacing, especially for folks who just want to play every now and then. Up until the marsh cave the difficulty flattens and you can just cruise on to the next locale. The difficulty picks back up with the final boss, which is a treat and not another hassle to overcome, like high encounter rates and lots of insta-death attacks. Dont get us wrong, you can still be insta-killed, its just less prevalent. The music is fantastic too! Overall, its one of the better versions of FF1 we’ve played.

Its a pretty good port, with some nice QOL features, but it would be nice to be able to use controllers.

The game is great but would become a pixel perfection with controller support! Show the love Square Enix.

We were happy to pick this version up. This game brings back so many memories, we have only one problem with this version it doesnt support controller option. Devs please allow controller support the older version did. Other than that well worth the price.

Please add controller support for this game!!

We love this game and franchise so much! It would be amazing with controller support. Please add!

Cant equip it. Seems like there are some buggy items. 4/2023.

Great classic but would work better with controller support.

Great remake. Just wish it worked with a controller.

Please add controller support, with option to turn off hud controls when controller is connected. Thanks!

Not bad so far but was crushed to see there isnt the option to change xp/Gil/encounter rate on this version.

This game looks amazing and gives us a ton of nostalgia. But why is there no controller support on IOS? The PC version has it. But it was just ripped out of mobile for no reason?

We played through to the end. Good port with great visuals of a classic (but flawed, like most games of its time) game. The option of using tap to move and swipe controls is smart but controller support seems like such a no-brainer here. The ability to use a d-pad would launch this version from mobile port to true alternative to the console releases. Ill wait on the rest of the series to come to Switch, because it feels like such a disservice to classic games to deny even the option of a real d-pad and buttons.

Im too young to have had any previous experience playing games in the Final Fantasy series, but we’ve been curious about it (I like fantasy games, or the idea of them anyway.) So we decided to get this mobile remaster (I also like 8-bit stuff), and going in, we were just happy to have the chance to play a RPG that wouldnt panic us. Then the 45-second intro with no information ended. After that, we started playing the game. We decided to simply explore the map. The controls for moving arent great but good enough. However, in our first steps, we were met with a skeleton army and 4 options; Attack, Magic, Items, and Defend. Id heard that none of the spells in the original Final Fantasy did anything. We didnt realize they just werent there. Our characters included a White Mage and a Black Mage. They couldnt use magic; SINCE WHEN COULD A MAGE NOT USE MAGIC!? As it turns out, you get nothing in your inventory when starting. Attack required multiple times of hitting the same button. When one character lost a third of their HP after one hit, we tried Defend; didnt do anything. By the end, that guy was dead. We discovered Id received a potion though, and tried to use it to heal the dead guy. Nope. Thats fun when youre fighting a boss five minutes later and you literally cant win. After that endeavor, another of our characters was on the brink of death. The potion refilled the total HP, but when we tried another hand at the boss fight, still failed. The controls have no instructions despite being infuriating at the start. We desperately looked and found out that the small panel in the corner with a lot of key info and gameplay use cant be accessed. Oh well, its okay.

Maybe it is because we are old now, but this game seems much easier then we remember. Status effects seem to have minimal effect on characters and we went an entire game without a character missing a swing. What is the point of accuracy? We remember problems with the original NES version like spells with minimal utility, so it could be faulty memory. Some of the items may not work quite the same as the original, too. It looks nice and the quality of life Improvements like tap to location and auto battle are huge. We tried to reboot the original NES version before playing this and it was far too much of a slog to bother with. This is much more enjoyable. It just doesnt seem quite the same. If you need a nostalgia fix, go for this, if not it is an easy superficial game. There are better games out there.

There should be controller support since the game originally was released on the nes which had controllers.

There are changes from the original game. The extra dungeons are not included which is a shame.

Pc version has controller support. This does not.

Please, SE, read these reviews. We want controller support. There are plenty of other examples among your iOS games that DO support them, but your Crown Jewels, FF, dont. What gives. Ill update to 4 or 5 stars if its added.

We dont really understand why its not in the game when its available on the desktop versions. Like, its already in the program. It would make playing on our iPad more palatable.

They made the game so easy now its a waste of time. We dont understand why? Maybe next time have easy level/ hard level.

We will leave it 1 star until Dev provides controller support.

So frustrating, we dont want to drag our finger on the screen and have this huge arrow taking up the screen. Good remaster but this killed it for us.

Love this game! But wish we could use our Backbone controller with it. It would make it easier to play. Our fingers are crossed the devs will add controller support soon! Thank you.

We love the Final Fantasy games we just wish the mobile versions had controller support.

We would love having controller support.

Its sad we actually assumed this game would already come with controller support it actually frustrates us now, because we bought a controller just to play the square rpgs we guess the jokes on us for not doing deeper research.

First of all, you need a guide to beat this game so look up a walkthrough for this game as it will not hold your hand. We honestly would not play this game with a controller as man people complain about, the reason for this is because its much simpler to tap where you need to go. Especially in dungeons, picture this: You are looking down at a maze, you know that the exit is at the top of the maze. Well tap the top of the maze and your character will automatically walk the path to get there. No need to run around trying to figure out whether to turn left or right (yes, random encounters do stop the auto pathing), and having a map on screen is such a life saving addition. We love auto battle in this game, we turn it on or off depending if we have to change tactics mid fight but for grinding for levels its great. You get tons of gil and xp in this version so grinding doesnt feel like too much of a chore. The game isnt too difficult if you have a guide, and battle for maybe 15-30 minutes every time you reach a new area to make sure you are leveled, and have gil to buy new gear and spells. The recommended level we saw online was 35, the last boss was constantly killing us at level 57. Expect a major difficulty spike with the last boss, unless you get lucky depending on his actions. Sometimes hell one shot some of your characters low on health and its a waste of a round rezing and healing them. But dont give up, its just RNG, we beat him on our 5th try. Your character order in the game is important, as characters infront/top get hit most and character at the last/bottom slot gets hit least. Our setup order was Warrior/Monk/WhiteMage/BlackMage. Black mages are squishier than WhiteMage, surprisingly. Anyways, we hope this helped. We enjoyed the game and actually felt a sense of accomplishment when beating the game. Not only cause we beat the first Final Fantasy Game, but because that last boss was a pain lol. Game was worth playing, our completion time was about 16 hours and we had 99 of almost all healing/restorative items going into the Final Dungeon.

It would be really nice if you added controller support for all those games. We play on iOS myself but Im assuming android users would want it too.

This is a must-have for fans of the 2D FF entries. Im a huge fan of the NES version of this game, and Im a traditionalist, so we were a bit skeptical going in. This modern version grew on us quickly. The musical score is amazing, and the updated graphics are a nice touch. The quality of life updates are also nice. Dont listen to the nitpickers regarding the controls. We got used to them after a couple minutes of gameplay.

Ill start this review by saying, that if you are a JRPG fan, this game is definitely worth it. Having just beat it about 5 minutes ago, we’re glad to say we’ve experienced this classic. Not a game we would see our self playing a second time, but we’re definitely excited to check out the other Square Enix games. These old school JRPGs play really well on mobile. A word of advice, you will need a guide to play through the game. We’ve had Dawn of Souls on GBA back when it came out, but it was hard to get into at the time. Im so happy that this pixel remaster exists. The auto battle function is very handy.

We love this game for its simplicity, and the ability it gives to us play it in short spurts. The technical aspects of the game work well enough to produce an enjoyable experience. This isnt some sort of hardcore gaming experience. Not the story some AAA status life changing event. Just a bare bones classic adventure. Final Fantasy provides the broad strokes of the perfect adventure, leaving the details to the imagination. Choosing the names of your heroes, and making up their dialogue as they travel together.

We never played the original, so this was our first experience playing FFI. The pixel remaster has good visuals, and combat sequences are well placed. Eventually we got to the point where we were super overpowered for 99% of the encounters, until it was time to defeat the final boss. Beat it in about 13-ish hours.

Our rating of this is heavily biased. We drink FF morning, noon, and night. We are a sucker and we are not ashamed. That said, this is a fine version of the game. Theres pixels, dungeons, and plenty of knocking down. It lacks the bells and whistles of other versions, but we think its fine. Newbies should go for 5 or 6 to start though. Those rock.

So, we’ve finished our 100% playthrough, all achievements. We originally reviewed this game and gave it 1 star for lack of controller support. After completing the game, we can say that the remastered sprites look great and the game is even better for it. However, the touch controls are not good as we suspected. Detracts from the experience and becomes annoying when your character doesnt move exactly how you are expecting to control them. This remaster definitely needs MFI support. Overall though, the game is well-polished and we do not regret our purchase.

Love the game. Want to play more of it and maybe do a lets play of it. The one thing that would be nice is controller support on the iPad. Just so we can get in a bit of practice and find out where we would have to go before we do the game on our pc. This game needs controller support. Final fantasy 7 and 8 have it. Why was it not implemented in this?

Only gripe we have is the complete lack of gamepad support. We got the collection on mobile since Im barely home and would love to play these with proper controls. We mean sure, the touch controls are usable enough, but at least just copy and paste some of the code from the Windows builds. Other than that, as a game, its a great version. Some may argue that its a bit easy, but the reworked music and aspect-ratio agnostic presentation makes it the best looking and sounding version out there. Gameplay is generally fine, as its more akin to the GBA version just missing the extra dungeons and MP system. Personally we recommend first timers to play this version. The Auto Battle makes grind a snap ! The difficulty wont push you away, and the game presents itself very well. If you want gamepad support,as of now, youd best make way to your Desktop and play there instead.

The art and music is nice, and the tap to move feature works well in place of controller support, which we thought was a deal breaker for us. The UI design/font looks a little weird, and we wish there were more options for the classic CRT look, but otherwise, its a very playable version of the game.
