A Glimpse into “Four Months Earlier”

“Linda & Joan” is a narrative game about a British family. You play as Russell, Linda, and Joan — son, mother, and grandmother — switching between them to help the family cope with a series of traumatic events. Based on a true story.

Prologue: “Four Months Earlier” is part one of the story. Linda is visiting Russell in Los Angeles, where he now lives. We join them halfway up a hiking trail. You must walk them to the top. Linda is using a stick and is unable to move as quickly as Russell. Keep them within earshot and they’ll chat about Linda’s visit and the past, while trying to find the right time to bring up what’s weighing on their minds.

There are multiple endings based on the choices you make — one of which involves Joan, who is at home in Hereford, UK.

Play in Normal Mode (walk Russell, Linda follows) then try Challenging Mode (walk both Russell and Linda).

This is a free, standalone experience. It will take 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

Story, art, development by Russell Quinn; an artist, designer, and programmer. Co-creator of Webby Award-winning “The Silent History” and “The Pickle Index.”

Featuring original music by Jeremy Warmsley.

The game is amazing and beautiful. We were looking for more games to try out and saw the reviews and downloaded it. Im so glad we made that choice. Cant wait for the next addition.

We’ve never written a review, because we’ve just never cared. But Im taking the time to write this, because this game is just, fantastic. Its unlike any game you play on your phone, because most of them are action based, simulations, etc. This game was almost refreshing, it was relaxing, it was interesting but above all else, it made us feel emotions that we would have never thought Id feel from a game on our phone. To be fair, this isnt a game, its an experience, but it was just beautiful. It looks like it took an incredible amount of work to make this game, and was it made by one developer? Im dont know. But the fact that the game is short, doesnt take away from it at all, it actually makes it better. Instead of stretching out the narrative and adding parts to the narrative that previously didnt exist, it was straight and to the point. SPOILERS BELOW SPOILERS BELOW SPOILERS BELOW SPOILERS BELOW Regarding the picture at the end, that warmed our heart, because we hadnt fully read everything about the game, so we had no idea it was based on a true story. But Russel, Im sorry for your loss, and we hope you know that what youve done here, and what youre doing, is absolutely incredible, and it takes someone whos strong at heart to be able to do that.

We live in Los Angeles , am an adult, and have an older parent visiting us this weekend that Im simultaneously looking forward to and dreading. This game was an amazing reminder (weirdly specific reminder in our case!) to cherish the time we have. Thank you for making this beautiful work – we look forward to the next chapter.

Sitting here not being able to go back to sleep, we downloaded this game for the hell of it. Little did we know, how simple but beautiful it would be. We have a very close relationship with our mother who we love more than anything. Im 21 and shes 50 and we think she still has quite some time left. Although as she gets older, it crosses our mind the day she will leave. We always try to make every moment special. After reading further about the story behind this game, Im sitting here crying our eyes out at 5 AM! So powerful. We hope the creator knows what a beautiful & unique game this.

We love this prologue! Beautiful, thoughtful, well-wrought. Excited wait to see the final product!

The whole universe created here – the shadows shifting on the Observatory as you move! The sound of the wind picking up near the top! – is gorgeous. The characters dialogue with each other and with the terrain are immediate entries into their relationship. And into the game. The story is so rich and layered, but explored with such subtlety, that it plants itself into your consciousness and takes root. Absolutely moving.

We were in awe. Short and simple yet had a huge meaning behind the storyline. We have never felt these kinds of emotions playing a game before, and it really touched our heart. The simplicity of it all was stunning from start to finish. Makes us realize just how fragile moments are in life and reminds us of why we keep going and what we look forward to. The waterworks definitely came flowing. Russell, we are so sorry for your loss. You are so strong and creative, we cannot believe there are people like you in this world that can create a piece like this. Amazing. Hands down best game we have ever played.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The game caused us to reflect on events and choices in our own life.

A short, tender little tone-poem of a game that begs some questions about distance and closeness that feel extra relevant right now. Looking forward to the next piece!

We saw this game and thought, oh how cute! Lets try! It seems to have a lot of great reviews! And Im floored by how well it told a story, and the end had us in chills! Its wonderful and we cannot wait for the next addition in 2022! Good luck and please keep up the amazing work!

This is a great game for people who like slow paced story invested games! The story is rich and we cant wait to for the full game to come out!

The game itself was just very boring, but the story was cute. It was mostly just walking and there wasn’t much else. We were thinking that the actual release of the game would be much better, but the demo wsa kind of dry. Condolences to the creator of the game however, this must have been a very difficult time in your life, and we appreaciate you creating this game to share your story with the world. It must have been very difficult.

This prologue tells such a heartwarming and melancholy story. Its relatable, charming, with a touch of darkness. Excited to continue along with this games journey!

We tried this game out right after a long stressful day and it helped slow us down. The gameplay encourages you to think before speaking and to present in conversation. Its no button masher, though you will find your brain/fingers constantly working as you navigate up a hill. This concept paired with a heart wrenching storyline and simply beautiful score make for a fun, unique experience.

Broadened our view if what a "video game" could be. Creative, beautiful and thoughtful. We anxiously await the full version – will be more than happy to buy it. Highly recommended.

Thoughtfully designed, loved this game and many of its heartwarming attributes. Really gives you a fresh perspective on loss and nostalgia.

Incredible example of "video game" as tone poem / short story  just enough interaction to pull you into the world, gorgeous music, all beautifully rendered, filled with the pathos of interaction between children and their aging parents. Def play with headphones on and maybe not in a cafe, if you don’t want to cry in public.

This is a really well designed prologue with a compelling narrative and interesting interactive aspects! We highly recommend it!

We just finished playing through this prologue and man was it beautiful. It was such a heartfelt experience that made us feel an emotional connection to Russel. We began to tear up in the climb to the observatory but a smile never left our face. Such a heartwarming and beautiful story, we hope to see more soon.

Touching, beautiful narrative "game" with a poignant everyday conversation in a beautifully rendered hillside walk at L.A.’s Griffith Park Observatory. Music and sound are also beautifully done and add substantially to the feeling.

This prologue shines as a way to deeply feel the emotional lives of the characters under the guise of a game. Cant wait for the full version even if it WILL make us blubber!

A moment in a story’s arc, beautiful and banal – the dialogue is funny and heartbreaking in its realism. An exercise in meaningful human connection when it matters most.
