This work was the basis for the series' culmination, "Hakuoki Shinkai" which released in 2015.

■Story
It is the end of the Edo Era, and the 3rd year of the Bunkyu Era…
The protagonist, Chizuru Yukimura, was raised in Edo and is daughter to a Rangaku scholar.
Having lost contact with her father in Kyoto, Chizuru decides to visit him.
There, Chizuru witnesses a Shinsengumi soldier killing a bloodthirsty monster.
By strange happenstance, Chizuru finds herself connected to the Shinsengumi, and the assassins desperate to kill them.
As time progresses, Chizuru will discover their terrible secret….
Tortured by their own thoughts, the men of the Shinsengumi wield their blades in defense of their faith and ideals, in an era torn apart by chaos.
Hidden in the riots that defined the passing of the Edo period, a dark battle within the Shinsengumi begins: A battle that will never be recorded in the pages of history…

Edit : it is working now! Ive been checking everyday! THANK U SO MUCH. We bought this game with alot of excitement to play it but it is not working with us and keeps showing a black screen , we hope they update the game and fix the issue, 22$ are too much for a mobile game so we hope they fix it soon.
We bought this version because we wanted to play more characters that werent available in the non premium version. We instead got the same characters and one bonus one. We really wanted to play the characters in Kyoto Winds version that we havent played yet and would of just payed for it at a higher price if available here. We dont have a Playstation or PC to convert game just a Mac so for Mac users it would be nice if an app version of Kyoto winds was now available since its been a few years since it hit the market. We bet it would be a great seller! From, A Fan.
All we ever see is the instructions- then a sound plays and the screen goes black. Ive tried deleting and redownloading and its too much trouble for us to care now. We would like to be contacted so that we can get a refund we couldnt even play this. Very disappointed.
Great app! We have been having trouble with it working ever since Ive updated our phone to iOS 14.
We just downloaded it and was really excited to play, having just finished the show. Unfortunately, it is no longer compatible with IOS and will not load past the instruction screen. We hope to be contacted about a refund and that this gets resolved, it looks like this was a really fun game. Regardless, it should not still be available for purchase if it is no longer a compatible app.
Great story great visual and we have seen zero glitches its a little pricey but it definitely worth it.
Played this on a few platforms and the game is great but tried playing on new iPad and theres no sound. Havent tried with a headset yet and plays all other sounds/music outside this app. Not compatible maybe.
We love souji okita he's our favorite!! We feel bad for him since he contracts tb though. We really wish that it had sannans route though.
Ever since we played Hakuoki on our psp, we've been completely ruined. No visual novel, no romance game, no dating sim, no otome, nothing can compete with the absolutely beautiful characters and setting of this game. The story is so deep, the choices feel like REAL choices, and the historical depth is fantastic. Did we mention it actually has a full translation that makes sense – unlike every single other otome that pushes its greasy paunch onto the Apple Store. That being said, it won't be for everyone. If you want the depth, but samurai just don't tickle your fancy (blasphemy) check out Amnesia, also on iPhone.
You will like this game and it will be worth the money. Now, if you were looking for something like voltage/shall we date games like the reviewer (duffy or whatever) said, this is NOT for you. That person made the mistake of purchasing a game before doing a little bit of research. It's unfair to give a somewhat poor review based off a mistake YOU made. (Sorry not sorry) This game is very similar to the anime & branches off to the character routes based off choices you make in the main route. We've played every route and completed the game. It was definitely worth the money for us as we are a fan of Hakuoki and knew BEFOREHAND (YouTube is your friend) what to expect from the game. So we highly recommend this game.

We were originally against paying so much for an app, but when it went on sale we couldn't resist buying it, and we're SOSOSO glad we did because it's absolutely amazing! Had we known what we know now, we wouldn't have hesitated paying full price! It's a great deal for everything you get! Really kicking ourselves for not buying it sooner! The stories are very well written, very well translated to English, and features numerous routes and ways to go about different directions within those routes so there's really no repetitive stories here! (Unless you're like us and chose to repeat the same story because it was so great! we love our Souji so much! He's our everything!) The artwork stills and CGs are so beautifully done; plus there's a great sense of achievement when you unlock a CG because you can save it in your photo album & even replay the scene in which you got that photo directly from the album! Awesome, right?! The navigation and ease of using this app is phenomenal! We haven't came across an otome that makes playing and saving special moments this easy! Plus, there's even audio playback in your history log! So if you can't get enough of your love's voice saying a special line, voila! Our FAVORITEEEEE part is that it is FULLY VOICED! While it's in Japanese, there's English subtitles, so there's no reason for anyone to not enjoy it if they are fluent in either! The emotions are so raw and spot on all throughout the voice over work; they effect you just like you were talking to them yourself in person; we're not going to lie, this otome is VERY emotional, a lot of scenes ripped us apart inside, and others made us laugh to tears. (Recommend wearing headphones and turning down the background music to low for the best experience!) There's so many more great things about this app that we haven't listed; so you should buy it and find them out for yourself! P.S. Just a little extra love to the developers: Kenjiro Tsuda is our FAVORITEJapanese voice actor of all time! Thank you so much for choosing him to be a part of this! His characters are always quick to grab our heart, and Chikage was no exception despite his "bad guy"/"enemy" role here! His voice is so sultry and divine; he just makes us melt every time! He's perfection we will not lie however, we were severely disappointed to the point of almost being insulted by the short length of his route and the lack of voiced lines from him within his route, while we understand he was an add on route, it's very upsetting at the lack of content with him in it despite how major of a character he is in other routes. He is our favorite character right next to Souji, and we hope you bring more stories to ios and ps vita! Looking forward to Hakuoki Kyoto Winds in May.
We purchased this right before an international flight and it kept us entertained for the duration. Thought the decision tree was nuanced enough to make the unique routes satisfying, and thought the story was interesting. We appreciated the historical perspective. Of the 7 routes, Saito and Sano are our favs.
This game is one of our top favorites, and we're especially glad they fixed the bug with the black screen even after the game hadn't been updated in over a year. The routes and story are the best, we just wish Kazama's route was longer and better! Kazama didn't even seem very important, not only was his route short, but he didn't even get his own album or character romance checker. But otherwise, this was great! We hope to see other Hakuoki games in English on iOS, because it's much easier to these games on iOS instead of a device like a PS.
Review updated 10/28/16: we're so glad that they fixed the black screen after the credits! :) This game is really beautiful, with hours of gameplay. While each route follows the same timeline, new events happen with whichever character you decide to go with, so it never gets boring. We think it's worth every penny. We hope everyone who rated it one star (for the black screen previously) sees the update and changes their review so we can support the game as much as possible. Old review: Despite seeing other's reviews for the game not working, we decided to go ahead to purchase the premium version anyways. Now we're also having similar difficulties, and we have a black screen after the opening credits :( we hope the problem is resolved soon, as we really enjoyed the "preview" version of the game.

We were playing Heisukes route when the game suddenly crashed? Specifically when they are at Sanans castle and right after Kimigiku calls Sanan a monster. We tried restarting our phone, updating it, clearing background apps. Im on iPhone 8 11.2.2. Please fix this. Other than that the game is great.
We're a fan of the $4.99 voltage stories, and we expected something like that when we bought this. However, we didn't enjoy this as much as we would have in the other games. This game is VERY long and focuses on the historical and fighting aspects of the game, with very little on the romance aspect. We've been playing for 3-4 days and just today we got a hint of romance from the character we were playing with. If you like a large and in-depth storyline with romance as a side story, this would be great for you. If you're like us, who plays a lot of voltage games that focus much on the romance aspect (though storyline is an important aspect, just not as much as this game), then DO NOT get this app. It is too much money for a game that could be spent on a similar app for a much lower price. This game is excellently made, with a lot of thought put into it, but it's definitely not intended to be mainly about romance.
This was a waste of money. After the introduction we were not impressed with the choice options. The ending was not great at all but the length good of story was good and overall the graphics were ok.
Beautiful art, great plot and characters. The story is engaging and well-written. You could even learn quite a bit of Japanese history, as most of the names and events were real. Each route is unique and the game overall has hours of playtime. Fantastic value compared to the console ports.

First off, let us just say that we have no interest in playing or even trying out this type of game. BUT, we first fell in love with the anime (series). We were so excited to to have found that they have a game for it. Having watched the anime and movies before playing the game, we have to say, the story follows each other. Love, love, love it. We have no regrets in paying full price. If you watch the anime – you will see why it is worth it.
We generally buy everything Hakuouki has to offer because we love it and we want to support it, but we genuinely loved this platform! It flowed well and was easy to navigate and fun to do! And, of course, the stories are absolutely amazing! Heisuke, Okita and Sanosuke have the best paths in our opinion, but there's a samurai/route out there for every girl! We definitely recommend this to pretty much anyone – go buy it already.
We love Otome games and this game is a masterpiece! We have been playing otome games for awhile now and we love it. They really should release more Otome games for us since we love seeing good looking guys fall for us in the game. These Guys in the Hakuoki series are total hotties.
The artwork, the music, the story… Wow! It was utterly brilliant! Everything about this game was wonderful and we absolutely loved the game play.
Can explain how much we love this series. We really wish it never ended. The characters were all so adorable and unique. The plot was thick and there was depth and character development. We just– no words can detail how much we love this game.
Best game ever!!! We had brought it on our phone then on our PS3 we want the SSL in English!!! So we can play it love it we're love otome they need more English otome bc we basically got all the ones on the phone we need them on our PS3 and pc but love it.
We have no words….Hakuoki has left us utterly speechless. This is by far the best otome we've ever played by far. If you have any doubts about spending that much money, don't, this game is entirely worth the money and will keep you entertained for weeks. The art word, the very fabric of the story line is just…amazing.
We are so addicted to this game and we love it. We just watched the anime and it is so good . We would love to play Hakouki SSL next please make it for the iOS.
We like the way that there is a common route in the game for all characters and how the heroine's choices determines who she ends up with. Depending on the level of affection the heroine builds up with the chosen character the story can end good or bad. It's worth buying the premium package. It's addicting.
Just like the previous reviewer said, the game is stuck on a black screen after the title song. Can't play. We have yet to go through all the character's scenario. Please update.

This game is amazing. It's beautiful and the story is perfect. What we don't like is that we spent $30 on a game that doesn't even have all the characters on the roster.
Ever since we updated our phone to iOS 10, we cannot play this game. It keeps crashing after the intro movies. We really love this game and want to be able to play it.
It's pricey but it's better then the free version where u have to pay per character.
We're giving this two stars instead of one because the opening is gorgeous, however; that's all of the game that we have seen so far as it immediately crashes afterwards. Kind annoyed that we just spent a decent sum of money for something that isn't working. Please fix this and we will update our review.
This game is wonderful. We love the setting, the art, the stories, the various routes one can take. We also love that it isn't an otome where you set off on a specific route as soon as the prologue is over. We would go more in depth on the game, HOWEVER, there is still a bug. A randomly occurring bug from what we've gathered. Amnesia seems to have the same problem. The app will play through the opening just fine but will show a black, soundless screen after that. Usually when we exit the game and open it again, it simply crashes. This is an issue for both ports of otome games by this company and we hope it is resolved soon. We were enjoying every penny we spent on this otherwise great experience! Please, help.
It's always fun to find out you wasted money on something that doesn't work. We will say from what we did get to play (common route, Chikage's route, and almost finished Harada's), it was really good. We really like the story and it was interesting and deep. The CGs are gorgeous and the voice acting is awesome. So we're giving this one star for the app itself and lack of English app support. At some point, we were no longer able to access the main menu. Black screen after the opening. So we, despite our saved data, deleted the app and re-downloaded it. Problem is still there. We rebooted our iPod. Problem is still there. So we don't know what's going on, but it has yet to be fixed. But from the look of the other reviews, we doubt it ever will be. So when we go to app support for help on this, we're sent to their Japanese website. No English support. We have no idea where we can even send a complaint. Poor job on the developer's part to not have the support in place for English speakers. So don't buy this from this developer. This is a consistent issue for their English games (we're looking at you Amnesia) and they haven't fixed it. Who knows if they will. We really like this developer's VNs. We enjoyed Amnesia a lot (it encountered the black screen problem after we had got all the endings for the game). And we started to like Hakuoki too. But then this happened and there's no way to remedy the situation. So until they fix this problem with their apps, we suggest don't buy from them. You're risking not being able to use a product you paid for with no support for English speakers. It's a huge risk. It's like seeing if you can finish the game before the black screen comes up without knowing when or if it'll happen. /sigh/ we think this is what Keima would call a shame. The characters are waiting for us to conquer them and this insurmountable wall of a bad app is preventing that from happening. To the people who are able to finish the game–Godspeed.
This a great game, worth a five star rating, but since the newest os update the app does not work. It is just a black screen. Please fix.
The same thing happened as another user. The main video plays and then it just goes black.
We can't even play the story at all. After the intro movie, the screen is totally black. We close the app and try to reopen, and it just crashes. The support website is in Japanese so we cannot request help. Absolutely unacceptable for $28. Do not buy this game, it is a waste.

This game, is great in all it's greatness. We love it so much and have no trouble at all when deciding to buy the full version. However, we can't access our game now, because every time it loads, after the game intro, it leaves a blank black screen with no menu. Emailed the developer for support, no replies, nothing. At least help fix the glitch? Or check on the product once in a while to see if it's working with the new iOS? Please do something, we didn't pay to have the game, but not be able to play it.
The game has suddenly stopped working. After the starter screen it turns black and just crashes. We've tried everything. Please fix this. 27 dollars is a lot to spend on a game that does not work.

We've played a lot of otome games on iphone, but this one is the best yet. The story is dynamic and quite emotional. We like that it ties in historical facts too. The romance has good build up, but not sappy. The female characters are strong and likable. Gameplay is quite long, so you definitely get your money's worth. It actually is a bit difficult to get complete satisfaction for each character. Graphics, music and voice acting is great and story/ English is really well written.
