A Glimpse into Hex Map Maker

Easily make and print old-school style role-playing game hex maps!

Hex Map Maker is designed to make maps similar to those from the old Dungeons & Dragons® Expert set for use in pen and paper role-playing games. Use the symbol picker to choose a symbol and then tap on the hexes to see your map take shape. Make a mistake? Just pick a different symbol and tap the hexes to change.

Change hex types or map size without losing your current map! (Though it will look a little different as the rows and columns move around.)

Features:

  • Choose from either pointy-top or flat-top hexes.
  • Make maps of any size by choosing the number of rows and columns from the menu.
  • Seven symbols to choose from: Mountains, Hills, Forest, Desert, Grassland, Water, and Blank.
  • Pinch and zoom or pan with two fingers to see the whole map or zoom in to focus on details.
  • Print whatever is on the screen — so you can print the whole map or just a small portion.
  • Save your maps to local storage so you can carry your entire campaign in your pocket.
  • Print the map and then draw cities, roads, dungeons, rivers or anything else you need on it — your imagination is the limit.

Its a decent app. Nothing extraordinary, but competent, easy-to-use, and free. No reason why you shouldnt pick it up.

This app is a little short on features, but hey, its free, and thats more than can be said for most of the other map-making apps. Even so, we find that most of what it lacks, such as being able to place settlements and add text, can be made up for with the markup features in the Photos app. We would love to see it be developed more, especially if more types of terrain are added, but we find that it does a good job as-is.

Id like to see the ability to add roads and more terrain types such as snow. It would also be cool to have a way to highlight tiles to mark cities, villages, paths, or like quest locations and nation borders.

Im currently designing a hex based war sim and we’ve been having trouble generating a perfect (and easy to use) hex tessalate. We used HexTML on browser and tried a couple of different apps and they functioned, but with great difficultly and low quality. We finished this map (a recreation of the previously created ones) in about 10 minutes (and it has over 3000 tiles). Fairy wonderful app, we would suggest adding support to export entire map to camera roll as an HD image, bc we ended up having to edit the map together in R4VE, a photo app. Other than that minor inconvenience this app is absolutely phenomenal in its simplicity and consistent quality.

Very useful and exactly what we were looking for. Very shallow though, we wish you could add a custom hex that just has a custom color for specific instances like swamp, jungle, hill, ice etc. Also it would be nice to be able to place and name a city. Please work on this project. It will be worth the work.

This game is legit. You can make maps with hexagons. We gave it a 4 because we prefer some suggestions. Can you add villages and more?

We were looking for a basic mapping app to start mapping the world our book is set in, and this is about what we were looking for. But we would say that having some other terrain hexes would be very beneficial. For example, jungle, plains, swamp, city/town.

We were looking for some program where we could design a pretty simple map for our D&D campaign, and we found this. We were hoping that we could mark settlements and citys, but you can only add different types of terrain which was a disappointment. Overall, its a very easy to use app, but would be better with more variety for hexagons on the map.

Pros: aww yeah maps. Tiles are distinctly different colors and easily distinguishable icons. Can change maps dimensions and tile alignment. Very solid. Cons: cannot get the map centered or to scroll. Would also like a tile or two to denote settlements. Overall good for what its designed for, wish some extra notes on the side.

This app is really cool and fun to use. We’ve been messing around with it for a while and we feel the only problem is when editing the screen tends to bounce all over the place.

Great for simple terrain and super easy to get into but we only have one complaint that we cant add in our own tiles that would that app pretty perfect but hey its free so we cant complain much.

Just one or 2 feature requests. Custom tiles or just add things like city, town, farm. Maybe some tiles for different scales like buildings if one wanted to do a city scale map.

For a free app is easily something wonderful that you guys made, but we would like some kind of Gray blocks for cities and like light blue for ice regions, it would be actually perfect.

If youd add towns and roads, Id happily toss you money!

Very barebones. No way to change colors for solid swaths of land, no markers for cities or terrain (swamps, desert, jungle, etc.) and the map tends to jump around while Im painting ocean tiles. But a great way to make a barebones environment to convey where your adventures are and where they can go. We would like to see more options for color (pallette selection for the Blue tile, maybe?) perhaps that can be more beneficial to creating more delineated areas of influence or landmass.

The map still cant be manually locked into place and will just teleport all over the place.

Good simple hex map maker. However map snapping to edges makes it almost unusable. Needs a more free viewing functionality.

So we were excited to try and make a conceptual map for a fantasy world but upon opening the app its really hard to use. Simple but getting map centered or at least at a workable scale was difficult.
