A Glimpse into Jotto – Unlimited Word Guess
Simply guess your own five letter words and Jotto will tell you how many letters your guess has in common with the secret word. Rule out letters you know are not in the word by tapping them once to turn them red, or tap them twice to turn them green if you’re sure they are included.

In 1970, we had just arrived in the US and we knew a woman grad student, whom Ill call J. She was a word wizard ( (Example: she rearranged the fundamental one line ethos of The New York Times, which was All the News That is Fit to Print and created a mock and a sarcastic criticism of their woke credo: All the News that Print to Fit!). She taught us Jotto! And, we have played it forever since 1971!
Would love to be able to easily slide letters around when trying to unscramble the word. If guessed words showed red and green for letters known, that would be helpful. Then we will pay.
We really, really like this app. The only thing keeping us from giving it 5 stars is the way it tells us not a real word when we know it IS a real word. Makes us gnash our teeth every time. Why cant it just say Sorry, not on our list? This happens multiple times during a session. GRRR! We still like the app a lot and continue to play it often.

We have been looking for a 5-letter word mastermind game for a long time now. Thank you for writing it. It seems the settings have improved since we last reviewed it. Now you can pick your difficulty level. The starting difficulty is easy, which is just normal 5 letter words. Today, we got camel.
We remember this games from childhood. Love it !! Very fun.
Even back in the pre-Internet days when jotto was simply a game you played with pencil and paper it was always the best game for highly intelligent people. The only thing we would add for this version is the ability to save a game that is not complete for a later play. Otherwise it’s terrific!
Gloze? What kind of word is that?? It took us 24 tries to figure out this word we’ve never heard in use? We like this game for the most part but not when we have to guess a word we’ve never heard before.
The one improvement we would recommend is the ability to guess words that have repeat letters. Example sassy. If the letters is correct, that would account for 3 by itself. Even if the final word is restricted to words without duplicate letters, clue words should not have that restriction. Perhaps the coder could include this as an option.
We were introduced to Jotto years ago, and became a fan. Its great to be able to play against the computer anytime!
Thanks for allowing us to color the letters in the guesses and the keyboard. We really enjoy this game. It has the right level of challenge for us, and allows others to make it harder if they want to.
Theres no way to cross out the letters that you know arent in the word and no way to circle or list the letters that you know are in the word, which makes it much more difficult to play.
This version has the best selection of features, like the classic game from the 1950s. VERY satisfying.
This is like a better form of Wordle for us (its like Worlde but if you only got yellow blocks). Its a game we can spend hours playing, it is simple and perfect, and its a clever concept so you can refine your strategies. Its a good skill but not impossible – like a perfect balance. Highly recommend.
Our only quibble is that we thought there could not be repeating letters, but we see you can turn that off. An enjoyable logic puzzle thats also a word game. We do a few rounds after our daily Wordle just for a bit of mind exercising in a different direction. Appreciate the suggestion from another reviewer about using QUILT as an elimination word. We will often use FUZZY and CHUCK for this. Eager to try QUILT as well. This is probably too much of a stretch, but we often think of the Bletchley Park codebreakers when we work this. (Like the book The Rose Code)
Probably better than that other word game.
We were happy to find this Jotto game, we used to play it years ago with our best friend. We used pen and paper then. And we wish there was someway we could mark off the letters on our guesses that are incorrect and circle the ones that are correct, Like we used to. We know we can change the colors on the board. But its just faster if we were able to mark our guesses right or wrong. But we really am enjoying the game and if we could do that it would be five stars or more. Great game. Really exercises the little gray cells.
We reduced our rating to 1 star because our most recent word was Waxing which is a 6-letter word. The only way we found out that was the word was by using the Hint button because, since the words are only supposed to have 5 letters, we wasnt even able to key in the correct word. We could only enter waxin which, of course, is NOT A REAL WORD. ########## EARLIER REVIEW: we’ve been enjoying this game but already had 3 wishes for improvements: – Wanted a different color to designate double-used letters in harder levels; – Wanted no double-used letters in the lowest level, which isnt supposed to have any; and – Wanted more words to solve for. However, since the latest update, not only is there no special color for double letters, now we no longer have the yellow designation to indicate possible letters. This is a step backward, so Im giving a lower rating than we would have before the update. [lYellow for maybe was reinstated, so we added a star.] The update that was supposed to filter out double letters where they dont belong did not work. We’ve come across 2 or 3 with double letters in the Easy section, and just now our word turned out to be MOMMY. Please remove words with double letters from the Easy list, consider adding an additional color, or some other indicator to designate a double-used letter.
Everyones obsessed with Wordle right now, but Jotto is far more challenging, which makes it more fun.
We have been a Jotto fan since we were about 13 years old (many, many years ago) when the neighborhood kids used to play for hours. We still have the original game but no one to play with. We are not sure why we decided to search for Jotto in the App Store, but how pleasantly surprised we were to find it. The first week or two, though we enjoyed the game, we found it difficult to keep track of which letters we had determined were not used and which ones were. Although we could color code the alphabet, it was still hard to track. (I use the 3 different colors to identify letters we have already guessed, letters we have determined are not in the word and letters we have determined ARE in the word.) Then a couple of days ago, we started playing and immediately noticed a programming change. Now the letters in our actual word selections are color coded to match how we assign colors in the alphabet. This makes tracking the correct/incorrect letters in each word so much easier! Thank you! The only improvement we can suggest now, is to change the color options. The yellow and the orange are too close in valueand therefore too hard to differentiate.
With the latest update they made the game way too easy and its not fun or challenging anymore. We enjoyed the challenge presented by even the easy level in the previous version, but with the latest update Im solving all the puzzles way too fast. PLUS theyve now locked all the other levels unless you pay for the app – no way, not after this dumbing down nonsense.
Like WORDLE only more challenging because you have to figure out placement on your own. For future updates, we would love to see Color coding we have assigned in the alphabet list reflected in the words we have guessed so far. But most of all (and to make it most like the original game) we would like to see two-player mode where we could guess the word our friend entered while he could guess the word we entered and we would see which person could guess the opponents word first. This would NOT be a heres our word. Now how many turns does it take you to guess it. Answer us back with the result. It would be either turn by turn (I make a guess on his word and we get the results, I.e., 2. Then he send us his next guess on our word. In our perfect world, we could play live on the same screen with us seeing his guesses and him seeing ours.
Played this as a paper-and- pencil game for hours with our bestie as a kid.
Someday perhaps it will have a portal so we can play live with others. But as a solo game it works quite well. Coming from 50 years of pencil and paper Jotto, it took us a few frustrating moments to get used to the red-green-yellow buttons. But now that we have got it down, we are very happy to be able to play Jotto whenever we feel like it. The lone developer is kind and very responsive to questions! (2022, years after we wrote the above, it all still stands).
The Jotto we always played never allowed the word we are guessing to have a double letter.
We used to play Jotto over 50 years ago n am glad its not an app that u can play by itself or with another player. Great game we do think, though, that the words u have tried should show in full ( use a monospaced font) n if u mark a letter out it should be dimmed, not just colored differently.
We cannot get the selected words to show completely on screen How do you minimize and reset so we can see the words we have selected.
Couldnt even stand doing the first word. We hate the design. Delete!
Learned how to play this game back in 1973ish. Our fourth grade teachers would play it during class. We would run back and forth from our classrooms with a pice of paper with a word on it. Hoping for a zero or a high # (4 or 5). Our Mom was one of those teachers, today our mom and we play it almost daily over the phone; on paper. So so Happy to have found it in an App. Mahalo for creating it for us.
Really hoped that this was a game we could appreciate so we upgraded it right away. Not sure. We input a 5-letter word and a warning comes up and says Not a 5 letter word. Please fix and we wont ask Apple for a refund.
Looking for Jotto online multiplayer that is turn by turn. No fun to send a word to a friend and let them do things on their own. Much more fun to do turn by turn.
We play Jotto every night and have for years. We used to play Mastermind as a kid and love this version with words. Hint: QUILT is a good word for modifying to guess letters.
What did you do to the yellow letter option for maybe? We were using that! All the time! Lowered our ranking. Hope youll bring the yellow back.
Can you please provide directions on how to play the game against another remotely. When a hit the button it asks for a word but then ends. How do we identify who Id like to play and invite them to play. Thanks.
There should not be double letter words allowed.
We’ve typed in several 5 letter words but when we press go, it says we must use only 5!! Letter words. Since when didtiger and takes no longer use 5 letters? And where do you go to fix and/or correct?
We guessed the word happy and it said 1, then we guessed logic (which we realize shares no letters with happy) and it said 1. We are assuming the 1 means 1 letter is right? But happy and logic dont share any letters.
We loved Jotto as a child an am addicted to this game. We wish it had a way to clear the alphabet grid when it is obvious you have isolated wrong letters. The dictionary seems lacking a bit. We have played so much, Im going thru the words all over again. Im glad to see the game is still being updated. Its good brain exercise.
A great way to improve analytical skills!
Our scores list low includes our most recent game no matter how many guesses. Otherwise this is a great app. Once fixed we will give 5 stars.
Need to be able to play without handing tablet off, I.e. Online play to be useful. Its really just a fancy piece of paper as it is.
We would have given this app 4 or 5 stars… Until today. Apparently it was updated overnight, and now the words guessed, which appear on the right side of the bank of letters WRAP so that they’re very difficult to view and comprehend. Also the colors are too pastel and similar to one another. Hard to detect green vs yellow or even red. Hope these issues are fixed soon, especially the word wrap issue. Also hope we’ll find the new version has more "difficult"-level words. We’ve been through them all so many times our guesses are based on memory of past words found. That’s all. Thanks. We play on our iPad 3, btw.
We disagree with the previous reviewer, we like the manual letter marking system; it is more like real Jotto.
The system for labeling letters as in or out is entirely manual and not convenient – one cycles through the possible designations manually, with the app not keeping track of which letters have been proven in or out. It is too bad since this will be the only Jotto app left in OS 11 and to get proper functionality one will need to use a web site.
