Number Munchers – Education Game Review
![]()
Number Munchers is a Education/Family game from MotivCode, first launched in 9th December 2009.
It’s rated 4+ and currently has 185+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Number Munchers Stand Out
Welcome to the game of eating numbers and equations while avoiding being eaten yourself! This classic game is now available for your enjoyment on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Just like the old-school game you used to play but now blended with some new twists! You'll enjoy it as much as you did back in the day and now you can pass along the fun you used to have to your kids. They probably wouldn't be caught dead using the original hardware this ran on!
Your hero is Muncher. You'll be directing his movements and eating habits while on your quest. Your objective is to eat the correct numbers or equations based on the heading of the level you are on. But be warned: there are creatures out there called Troggles that will get in your way! You may remember some of those shady characters: Reggies, Helpers, Bashfuls, Workers, and Smarties.
Without the hardware of your Apple ][ handy, you now move around the grid by touching a box. To eat the contents of a box, double touch it. Since you are no longer restricted to moving one box at a time, you must learn how Muncher moves to be successful at avoiding Troggles!
For every correct answer you eat, you receive points. Once you have eaten all of the correct answers you will move onto the next level. You will lose one of your Munchers if an incorrect answer is eaten or you cross paths with a Troggle. The game is over when you are out of lives. You can briefly keep yourself safe from Troggles while inside of the roaming 'safe box'. After every three levels you can sit back and watch a short, classic movie of Muncher taking care of business. When your game is over, you may be fortunate enough to have made it into the world-wide hall of fame!
There are five basic types of levels for you to play:
- Multiples: only eat multiples of the given number.
- Factors: only eat factors of the given number.
- Primes: only eat prime numbers.
- Equality: only eat equations that are equal to the given number.
- Inequality: only eat equations that are NOT equal to the given number.
You may also play all types together in series or in random order. As you progress in each type the difficulty increases. There are 250 distinct levels awaiting you!
Varying levels of difficulty are available to challenge your math skills. Also, as the difficulty goes up, more troggles will come after you and you will have fewer spare Munchers on hand. The harder you make it the more points you will receive per eaten correct answer.
Have fun!

Community Insight:
We used this app on floppy disk and when we tutored children in the 90s and early 2000s. When we moved in to our sons and daughter in laws house to help with remote learning, we trotted this our and our granddaughter immediately fell in love with the program . The problem is that the game quits after level three each time. Can you help.
This is a great app it is super fun and easy to use and you learn a lot from this awsome game we do a contest with factors.
Works just like the one from our childhood!!! Thanks for making such a cool app.
This game is a great update to the old number muncher game! Great graphics and works perfectly on our iPhone and iPad. Please make a word muncher game next.
Great game, indeed, but when we dont skip a cutscene, the game crashes after it ends. Please fix this. Then it would be 5 stars.
We saw super challenges word munchers, but we clicked on it, and it didn't work. So, we wanted to know if the word muncher can be added to the Apple app store. Thank you so much.
It is a fun game similar to the game we played as a kid. We just wish it didnt only let you play 3 levels then go out of the game.
This is the best game ever we definitely recommend it gives you a short movie and then you can basically one like all the levels super easy fun for kids definitely recommend get this app our kids love it so much its like theyre addicted.
We love this game but each time we make it to level 4 it will go to our home screen please get rid of this bug.
This app is everything you would expect out of a number munchers game. The only issue we have is our son has trouble double-tapping fast enough to munch the numbers.
Love this game from our childhood. Using it now with our kids. The game has some glitches though where it just closes after playing the videos after a couple of levels. We hope they fix this soon.
Please make a number muncher game for basic math facts and subtraction! Please please.
It wont actually download. We hope it will remember that we bought it if we remember to go to the store to play. Thats troubling. Possibly related problem, it stops after about 3 rounds. The original Number Munchers was fun so we were excited to see this. Too bad it doesnt quite play right or download right.
Reminiscent of childhood scholastic fun but app crashes after a couple rounds consistently.
This game is ok but WHERE IS THE WORD MUNCHER GAME? Help or someone please create this!!! The word muncher game is much better than the number munchers.
Our kids love the app, but they wont experience the way we did on a green screen with a 3 floppy disk and logging in using DOS. The only complaint we have is it advertises 250 levels yet the program kicks us out at level 3 on equality and factors all other level 5 is the end of the line. If you log in again, you have to start over with first level and again get kicked off at same levels. Not much fun.
Brings us back to our childhood, playing this game! While there are a few bugs to fix like the auto-progression sometimes glitching, etc. We would also like to see addition and subtraction options added. That way it could also appeal to a younger crowd, like kindergarten or first grade. Our second grader we know would have a lot of fun on this but could use the reinforcement on those skills too.
Bought this app hoping to revel in some 80s-era Number Munchers fun with our kids, but a few factors need fixing. First, as other reviewers have noted, this app requires users to double tap faster than most younger kids consistently can. Second, even on the Easy setting, this game progresses in difficulty so quickly as to be dispiriting. Third, theres an occasional bug in which you will have munched all the correct numbers, but the level wont clear. A few tweaks could make this a real winner.
Our favorite part and main reason we bought this was in the original you could watch little cut scenes after beating a couple levels.
Just like the childhood game as we remember it. Great fun for our kids. In order to munch a number you need to double click it. But the double click has to be very very fast to be read as a double click. Our 8 year old can barely do it. And when we do it we miss the double click every once in awhile which is annoying.
It gets nostalgia points for sure, but when it consistently crashes after the first three level video reward, not much fun to play.
We keep getting kicked out after 3 rounds! Super annoying since the app was not free.
They kept to. The 80s nostalgia but the app isnt stable.. It crashes every time after beating levels 3 and 6.
After playing three rounds it closes. Why is that? We would like a refund until you fix this bug. And where is WORD MUNCHER.
This game gives nostalgic vibes of hectic thinking and clicking. Only problem is, you cant get past the third round. The game crashes every time. We gave it two stars because its still a little fun to play. Needs to be updated or something to fix whatever bug it has.
This app crashes after only a few levels of play. Very disappointing.
Game was fun till it crashed in every category after completing level 4. Super lame.
Game wont function after three levels on easy. Double tap is also difficult for 4 year old.
Love this blast from the past but after 3 levels it shuts down :(.
After eating all the prime numbers, we can't figure out how to move onto the next level; because it isn't automatically doing it.
The speed necessary to double tap to eat the numbers is WAY too fast. In some case no speed is fast enough. Fix this and it would be a great nostalgic game to enjoy with our kids.
We play it anyway because of the nostalgia. We are just hoping that there will be more levels in the future since the levels presently are repetitive and not advancing as it should. And we hope this game will stop crashing all time time soon.
Continually shuts down, often after 1 round. Not worth money. They owe us a refund.
This app will not play past level three (as we repeat what everyone else is saying). Dont waste your money.
Like everyone else is saying this app crashes after 3 levels. Total waste of money. There is no way to contact the developer for a refund. TRASH.
The game lets you play 3 levels and then a cartoon video comes on. When the video is over the app crashes and closes. We want a refund.
App doesnt work correctly. Not worth the money.
Shuts down app after level 4. Cannot get it to move past without shutting down. Such a disappointment as we were planning to use it to reinforce multiplication with our son. Want our money back.
It only works past level 4. Total waste of money.
Crashes after a few levels every time. The difficulty settings are not appropriately scalable for different ages. This is not the game we grew up with.
Despite advertisements of 125 levels, the game kicks you off after 3 levels and you have to start over. Not even worth 1 start or a free download. PLEASE FIX THE GLITCH or refund the THOUSANDS of people youve ripped off.
Like other reviewers have said, there is a bug in the system that kicks us out after completing multiples of 4 EVERY time. Once that is fixed, this app is just as great as it was back in the day.
This is great until multiples of 4, then it shuts down! Fix this game so it works, it would be great.
App crashes every time after finishing multiples of three.
The game crashes after completing the 3rd stage EVERY TIME. Not worth the money.
We would give this game a higher rating if it didnt automatically shut down after 3 rounds of playing the game. If we had read more of the reviews, we wouldnt have spent $1.99 on a game that we cant fully enjoy. When/If this bug is fixed, then we might rate it higher. Until then, its not even worth a free download.
Shuts off at completion of level 3. Not happy.
An update has not been released in 5 years. The game crashes after level 3. Not worth it. Developers are trash.
This game came to our mind as a favorite of all time. We decided to search and omg it was there. Long story short, it keep resetting after level 3 which times out the app the the home screen. Disappointed because its a paid app.
Closes after finishing multiples of 4- every SINGLE time- on 2 different mediums (phone or iPad)… Again it worked always as a kid on a disk like someone else mentioned on 4/4/2020… Bought for our kid and disappointed as we would have liked to get higher than 4s.
