NYT Games: Word Games & Sudoku Review

We completed the Monday puzzle last week to continue our streak, got the gold treatment, and then cleared the puzzle for our less-adept wife to try her hand. But she didnt have time to get to it and the app terminated our 500+ day streak, even though the puzzle had been completed in time. That simply shouldnt happen and is very disappointing. We can just hear Will say, If your wife wants to play, she should get her own subscription, but thats not going to happen until she takes more interest and gets a whole lot better. NYT should be more welcoming and more responsive, considering the amount of revenue. (Why arent all the old solutions retrievable within the app instead of dead linksdo you really want people reading old Rex Parker commentary? ;-) Why cant users pull up the puzzles that were their personal best times for each day of the week?)

Longtime NYT crossword fan here. We started in high school when Gene Maleska was the editor. Having the current puzzle and an almost infinite archive of old puzzles with us wherever we go is fantastic! The addition of the spelling bee, wordle, and other games has been a fun bonus. There is one glaring omission, though. Id give five stars if they would publish the puns and anagrams puzzles and the cryptic puzzles here.

All these games r fire, but that new Tile game though.. A game can only be enjoyed so much until that ceiling gets hit. We are at that point now developers. Lets hook up a timer and a share button to this bad boi and get this thing up and running in the big leagues along with wordle and the mini. Will update to 5 stars once our thirst for demolishing our closest friends is satisfied.

Spelling Bee progress gets erased when you close app. NOT GOOD.

This game is so fun to play bc of all the different apps but, we hate on how they limit you to certain games. For example, when we play bumble bee, they only allow you to play up to a certain amount of words. Unless you got the money to do a subscription. And we js wanna play the game without getting paused bc we dont have a subscription.

For the past couple of weeks, our answers for spelling bee get erased when we exit out of the app. (So each time we come back we start from scratch). It makes the game a bit pointless, so we stopped paying for the subscription. Please fix. Thanks!

Annoying survey request greets you every time you open the app. Please remove it!!

This app glitches in weird ways all the time, especially on spelling bee. It will never save our stats on spelling bee even though it will save them for other games. Sometimes if u exit and re-enter it will also start from scratch and not remember any of our words. It constantly says that new puzzles arent loading. And now our app isnt working at all!! Its just a loading screen, no matter how many times we re open the app or change our internet.

The app currently has a big flaw, if youre playing Spelling Bee game and leave app for as little as a few minutes your game play up to that point will be completely erased. We contacted NY Times nearly a month ago and they were already aware of issue. We have since contacted them another two times and just get the same apology and that its a more difficult problem than anticipated but they are supposedly working on it. We love the app and have played it everyday for almost two years but for a fee of over $30/year we find this unacceptable.

Guys where did Digits go? Where did our hamburger icon in the top left corner go? Why can’t we select games from that drop down menu anymore? Why isn’t there a search bar to search games? Why is it just a huge scrolling field of square icons? And only four games are available? And the rest is just endless archives and ‘packs’ for sale. We feel like the introduction of Tiles caused a wave of corrupted coding in the app. Deleted it after a delete/install did not fix the issues.

For a bunch of alleged egalitarians at the NYT theyre sure greedy money grubbers. Dont want something for nothing and would gladly pay for an app, but a subscription, plus buy ons in app all of which are several dollars? Pass.

For the price of the subscription it should allow family sharing. Additionally it doesnt have information anywhere stating whether or not family sharing is allowed.

Now if we start spelling bee, leave the app and come back to it later, our progress disappears and we have to restart. Why am we paying for this.

When it works its great. That said seemingly every other update the app becomes completely unusual r and unstable on an always fully updated iPhone 13 mini. App will just crash after 30 seconds in an open crossword or 30 seconds of spelling bee. Makes it completely unusable. No changes with reinstalling the app or restarting phone, which leads us to conclude that its an app problem. If they ever can actually make a stable app then they might deserve more stars.

If we leave the spelling bee game to take a break and play one of the others all of our words are gone. It doesnt matter if we’ve just started or if we’ve complete the puzzle. This is extremely frustrating.

We feel a bit duped on paying for the subscription yet not all games are in the app? And now, the app is erasing and losing progress on Spelling Bee throughout the day forcing you to start over. Feels like a double dupe and the jokes on us. Edit: Recent app update does NOT fix the issue of Spelling Bee losing progress during a days game. Can we fix this please?

These are the same dopes that demand you pay to read news stories on their website that you can find anywhere else for free.

We’ve finally grown tired of the fact that the latest versions of the app require internet to load games. If you live in NYC, game time is train time and we can almost never load the games because we dont have service. It didnt use to be this way.

This app was amazing and fun. But for weeks now it loses all of our words on the spelling bee, multiple times per day. In order to use it we take a screen shot of our words. Then within an hour or two all our words will disappear. We add them back in and start again and they all disappear again. Im over it.

Challenging, riveting brain exercises!

We love doing the crossword puzzles and the spelling bee. Do the spelling bee every day, and almost all of the crosswords daily and the Sunday. Did you do the Sunday puzzle on the paper and sometimes finish it online. We also do the spelling bee in the magazine section as well as the online dailies. We do these for pleasure but assume that theyre good for the brain and help to stave off Alzheimers.

We’ve been doing this crossword and no other for twenty years.

This is easily the best value we get in terms of money spent for entertainment. We appreciate that they update the app somewhat regularly & have brought in other types of games.

Excellent crossword puzzles; they get progressively difficult as the week goes on; much better than Wall Street Journals puzzles!

So good for the grey matter on multiple levels: calming, challenging, fun, engrossing, interesting, comforting. We use it every day without fail and it it always feels positive.

The app resets all the Sudoku puzzles to the following days puzzles at around 7pm Eastern, wiping out any work youve done on the current days puzzles and prohibiting any further chance to complete the current days puzzles.

When will you update the crossword app so that you can write in the squares using the Apple pencil? Seems ridiculous that this is not available.

App works really well on our phone, but is slow on our iPad. We like the layout on the iPad but it reacts so slowly while we type, it often misses letters. We dont have this happen in any other app. Speeding up the reaction time would be awesome! We also wish youd bring back the acrostic archive! :)

We love and subscribe to this app but Spelling Bee has recently started losing our words when we close the app. Ruined what used to be a very pleasant part of our day! Please fix this…

We love the games once we get it open, but this is the glitchiest app we’ve ever used. At least 50% of the time we have to open it through the internet because the app just shows us a blank page. Super frustrating!

Spelling bee resets to empty randomly. No way to report a bug in the app without the app trying to open the apple mail app (which we do not use). Share button for spelling bee should allow us to send our full solution not just a useless, generic screen to our friend. Why is it that we cannot see/play a bee from last week ? Or even yesterday ?

Paying for a subscription to all games, downloaded the propriety app, why not have all the games on there???

The games are fun, but when they reset in the middle of the day and we lose all our progress, it takes the fun out of it.

For the love of god, give us an option to mute the infernal you win! Noise. It interrupts what Im listening to every time. Such a nuisance.

This app is great. Until something comes up and youve got to pause your subscription – then youve gotta roll up your sleeves and get ready for the most unpleasant interaction youll ever have attempting to simply cancel your subscription. Unfortunately because of this, and the awful support of NYT representatives, Ill not renew our subscription, nor use or recommend any NYT products ever again. Its really quite unfortunate.

Spelling bee continues to lose progress after spending time out of the app. Im sure its good for juicing the HAUs, but at what cost?

Have been enjoying the spelling bee since it came out. In the past week or so the app does not keep our progress consistently. Play it for a while and when we come back to it our progress seems to have vanished. If we cycle power on our iPhone it does seem to remember where we left off. Very frustrating.

This beta app should be free. $40 a year for a buggy app that loses progress and required constant logging back in. Refund subscription price please.

Its done this since the start and they are yet to do anything about it. Sad.

Every time we exit Spelling Bee, when we go back to it all our progress has been deleted and we have to start over.

The app stops saving progress. No longer will it do youve found X words already! You open the app and it starts from scratch, even when logged into an account. Canceled subscription because of this.

We love the games but to pay $5/month and get an error message that new puzzles arent loading almost daily makes it useless.

We love the NYT games app! We enjoy the Monday crossword puzzles, daily Wordle, and our husband plays Spelling Bee daily. Since, we avoid reading news for health reasons, we appreciate being able to access the games directly. Thank you!

Should be an arrow key to move from one square to another and a leaderboard for all the games (crossword, bee, etc), not just the mini. Also, a means to pencil in one or more numbers into sudoku squares. One more, can Two Not Touch be put on the games app? We love playing it in the print NYT, but would love to have it to go!

We love this app! But the bee needs a dark mode.

We play daily. But we updated the app this morning, and now the new puzzles wont load. Glitch?
