Hear from the Players – Riven (Legacy) for iPadOS Reviews

Find out what gamers are saying about Riven (Legacy) for iPadOS:

We love playing this games. Im so glad to play riven again. Lot easier to play on iPad then on the pc. Huge fan.

We explored Myst many moons ago and wanted to try Riven on our iPad. Got five minutes into wandering around this super cool world and made the bad decision to open the journal. After reading all of the entries, we could not close the journal and return to Riven. We tried tapping, touching, swiping, pinching but the journal wont close. The help section offers no help. Maybe Im stuck in the Prison Book but we thought that was stolen when we arrived.

After replaying RealMyst, we were kind of wary about getting Riven based on reviews that say gameplay can be pretty choppy. We found a great demo that features the game trailer & finally could not resist. With very challenging, detailed puzzles & a deep storyline, we find nothing wrong with a little choppiness in gameplay. It’s not an arcade game, it’s an involved game for serious puzzlers and there is no need for speed! The graphics & videos are beautiful!

Hope they put other Myst games on iPad.

We played Myst/Riven/Myst III as a kid with our Dad. It gives us such nostalgia to be able to play them again and on our iPad too! They are exactly as we remember them too! The graphics are awesome! We’ve always loved the dialogue and the dynamic gameplay of these games, and youve captured it so well! Thank you for bringing these fabulous games to our iPad! Please, if we could make a request? Please, please make Myst III! Uru would be nice too, but please make Myst III! We often picture being able to play it on our iPad and long to do so!

Riven is one of our favorite games of all time, but this version is just disappointing. We have encountered a lot of video segments that either have out of sync audio, a lot of missing frames which makes everything stutter, or really low resolution. While the game is playable, the bad animation/video quality ruins the immersive experience.

We want our money back! This game is not working. No audio, cant play it. How is this possibly still on the App Store?

How does this App have ANY good reviews? Absolutely terrible antiquated movement between scenes and the graphics are the lowest resolution we’ve ever seen on an app in 2020. Money down the toilet. We cant imagine playing this game even for 5 minutes. The developers should be embarrassed that they put their name on this junk.

We agree with the other negative reviews on the game play. This is unplayable. We loved Myst and Riven back in the day. We thought real myst for iPad was pretty good, we were hoping for at least the same level of game play here, BUT WAS SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED. It is extremely difficult to navigate and orient yourself throughout the game. Im a little surprised that Cyan would release a version like this given their previous commitment to excellence. Definitely want our money back.

This is no realMyst equivalent. Instead of the smooth visual exploring experience, where you can see pretty much all vantage points fluidly, this has just N, S, E, W (and maybe up?) views that you toggle to using arrows. Also, when we found a letter and clicked on it, the image was pixelated! Agh!! Very disappointing. Waiting for realRiven to come out (hopefully!). Please dont waste your money on this.

We wish we COULD give it a negative rating, it would be a -5! Just like other gamers, we played Myst back when it came out in the 90s and playing the iPad version of it over the last couple of days, we were expecting the same from Riven, NOT! We gave up playing after about 5 minutes. Why couldnt they have kept the same movement pattern as Myst? We wish we could get a refund as well. Ill try one of the rival games for free before we spend money on a full version of one of them. Save your money!

We played both Myst and Riven when they were on DVDs. Was very happy to see them for the iPad. We Started Myst and was very happy to see how they even upgraded a lot of the surfaces. Yet Riven is a joke. We would like to get our money back. It is like they took photos of the screen from a 2 mpx camera and pieced it together. Please tell us they are working on an update and will make it available for all that purchased this verstion. Otherwise, dont waiste your money.

At least when we played on the pc, we could look around. This is no more than screen shots. Not a shred of 3d. We should have bought realMYST. We own both games from our PC days but cannot play them anymore. What a disappointment. Not worth it.

I, like another reviewer, first played Riven in the late 1990s on a pc. This iPad version is amazingly good although, as others have said, the resolution is not quite as good and some of the movements are jerky. Still, it is more than adequate. We also concur with some of the remarks of others who have said that it is the best adventure game ever; at least we have never seen/played one better. Myst was great but Riven is superb. Some of the puzzles are extremely challenging, but fair. This is an extremely absorbing and immersive game experience-very, very addicting! This production for iPad is also a great bargain- we seem to recall that the original PC version cost somewhere around $50 new in the 90s.

There is no sound, please fix. Was really looking forward to playing this after many years this holiday season :(

We love this game and Myst!!!! We hope you will put the other games in the myst series on here soon.

Excellent port of one of the best video games ever made. Being on the iPad makes it super convenient, only downside of this particular version is scaled down image quality but thats a minor inconvenience.

Audio doesnt work on iPadOS 13.

Not until you fix the navigation.

After just finishing Myst on our iPad, we were really excited for Riven but its completely unplayable. All we can do it swipe through a series of still images. Im extremely disappointed.

How frustrating, after putting in crap loads of hours piecing through some impossible puzzles with no clues and backtracking moves there is one possible ending in which if you click on the wrong seemingly harmless book while still in the middle of the game, it kills the game. NO WAY OF REVERSING ! The game hints claims this as one of its possible endings. Bull@#$%. Perfect way of alienating your players.

Played this game with our kids and they were enthralled by it! After so many years, this game still holds up. We hope Cyan will port Myst V to iOS and Ubisoft will port Myst 3 and 4 to iOS too.

We give it 5 stars because it deserves it because of the classic nature of the game. IPad implementation is fine accept that the images are low res… This is a terrible tragedy since the big selling point of the original Riven was its magnificent graphics…. Which are clearly lacking here. We would gladly pay the price in money and memory for a high res version. The implementation of the companion iPad realMyst is SO BEAUTIFULLY DONE, that we were hoping the same for this Riven…. But, sadly, low res pictures.

We just finished realMyst and LOVED IT! It was an immersive experience because of the fluidity of the controls. This is a bit clunkier but we loved it anyway. Full immersion game.

We really enjoy the Myst legacy due to its graphics, music, acting and most of all, its puzzles. Would like, if possible to also have the other three Myst games, Myst III: Exile, Myst IV: Revelations and Myst V: End Of Ages available as well as we’ve never IV or V and would love to as well as also being able to play Exile again.

Well, it is mostly excellent. There were several sounds throughout the game that would not play. This was a minor disappointment until we got to the part where you rescue Catherine. The gadget opens but does not play the audio code. We went to Prison Island anyway, just to guess at the code and found that the puzzle itself doesn’t function. Sooo basically, it’s impossible to finish the game without letting Catherine die. We really hope this gets fixed soon.

Absolutely unplayable. Dont be fooled into thinking this version of Riven is anything like the original or as well executed as the version of Myst available for the iPad (Myst on iPad is, simply put, superb). Nothing in this version of Riven is rendered: you simply move from one image to the next. This fails to create the illusion that you are moving across the map and you completely lose spacial awareness as you attempt to explore your surroundings. Utter garbage.

Riven is probably the best adventure game of all time. This game was originally on pc in 1997 and required 5 CDs to play. Now it fits on our iPad! Everything about riven is perfectly designed, the game has so many nuances and little details that make it an immersive and realistic world. The player is challenged to rescue Catherine the wife of atrus who has been trapped on a world called riven. The story is great and is pieced together with journals, sequences with live action actors, and the environments and islands help you understand, gehn the games bad guy and his world riven.

Our Riven download for our IPad is excellent, we use the book to cheat but we enjoy it that way, we have probably played it 10 times without any problems, love it, we sure hope you can develop Exile for IPad, I"m waiting we had more problems with Myst and navigating, so we deleted it. Some problems we wonder if people have too many things on their IPad slowing it down, we have Riven memorized now except the marble dome code, but we still play it over and over, so what’s up with the bad reviews, it’s not the game, it’s YOU.

For us, Riven and Myst are the top two adventure games ever produced. One may need that to obsorb the following review. The bad: Game was assembled low-rez, and the animations are jerky, we assume to keep the size low enough to accommodate as many older machines as possible, thereby increasing profit. The original release was visually much nicer than this iPad version. The good: After so many years there is still nothing in the game world to match the creativity and style of this experience, though we have not seen obduction yet. Think about it, this game, though more like an interactive movie, contains all the elements of a Hollywood style production; trained actors, set design, costuming, audio/video engineers, lighting, script writing, etcetera. And it all comes together into a coherent and intriguing story. We can’t name another game that comes close. We’ve been waiting for one but alas, it has not appeared. We do wonder about Rand’s childhood. In the first installment he kills his sons, and the second his father who tries to kill him is jailed for life. That’s rough man. Recommendations: If the original assets are still available, bring to I-devices a re-mastered hi-rez version so we can see Riven in its original detail. Or maybe Real Riven? Now that would be something to see! To Cyan: No one makes a game like you folks. Keep raising the bar.

We played this on our PC with the 5 CDs it came with back in 1998. We played Myst first and enjoyed it, but Riven is the game that impressed us. The graphics were top notch for the time this was made and the improvement was so impressive that we could just stare at a scene for awhile and enjoy the view as if we were really there. Playing the game turns you into a bit of a snoop, a tinker of gadgets, knobs and switches, a thorough detective for clues, secret passages and doorways, and a bit of a thrill seeker- considering how real this game feels after awhile! Even though we used the hints on the Internet frequently to help us get through the game, we were captivated by every turn. The landscape is beautiful, colorful, similar to reality with an original touch. We had dreams about this game! We’re so excited the game makers have made this available for modern devices. We have played other sequels to Myst and Riven and they are just as captivating. We hope those will be available here as well. We miss them very much.

This app is a port of an old PC game. Like most adventure puzzle games – even those developed today, Riven did NOT have free roaming movement when it was developed, and this port doesn’t have it either. It’s a port, not a rewrite. Riven was the sequel to a PC game called Myst. The original version of Myst had the same kind of gameplay as this port, but in later years, Cyan released an updated version of Myst with free roaming movement and 3D graphics; this updated version of Myst was called realMyst, and realMyst was the version that was ported to the iPad. Unfortunately, this difference in graphics and movement between realMyst and Riven has led to a number of unfairly negative reviews and ratings for the Riven app due to the number of people who played realMyst as an app and expected the Riven app to have the same kind of free roaming movement. If the lack of free roaming movement will ruin the game for you, don’t get this app. Although Riven is a sequel, you don’t need to play Myst. However, Myst provides some interesting backstory for Riven, so if story is important to you, you might want to consider playing Myst first. The triumph of Riven’s design was not the graphics or sound – though they were cutting edge when the game was first developed – but the integration of the puzzles into the game environment. Instead of using what has become the industry standard for adventure puzzle games in which the player has a random, meaningless puzzle pop up that he must solve in order to access the next screen or area, each "puzzle" in Riven has the player interacting with a realistic environment in which each object has a reason for being there beyond just to give the player puzzles to solve; the objects with which the player interacts in Riven all have a reason for being there to the characters who live in the world of Riven. Unlike most of today’s adventure puzzle games which rely heavily on having the player hunt for a dozen or more random, meaningless hidden objects on a static screen in order to get a single useful inventory item that then usually must be applied to every interactive spot until the correct one is found, every object in Riven has meaning and purpose to the inhabitants of Riven. ** SPOILER ** Even the children’s toy used to teach a player the symbols for D’ni numbers tells a chilling story of what life is like for Riven villagers. You have to take the time and make the effort to think about the implications of the things around you or you’ll miss much of the game’s story, but no matter how much time a player spends trying random actions on a difficult puzzle, when the solutions are finally revealed, they make sense. Riven is not a game for the impatient. It rewards people who are willing to take the time and make the effort to study the game’s environment and to understand the story that is being unfolded through the environment itself rather than through extensive cutscenes. But that is what makes the game so immersive, despite the lack of free roaming movement. Taken purely from the point of view of story, atmosphere, and puzzles, Riven is the best game we’ve ever played.

This might be the best game in the series. Make more sequels! Can’t get enough.

As the original was written for a screen with a much smaller resolution, this ipad version stays true to the spirit of the original Riven. With the ability to bookmark, chnage the speed of the transitions and a few other options, it has a leg up on the steam version, which honestly looks crummy on our great big monitor. The only possible improvement would be to make a smoothed version, much like realMyst.

Please update this app so hopefully when iOS 11 is out this game won’t disappear. Other then that great app.

We thought this would be good. Unfortunately the game is very dated. The graphics are old compared to what is available nowadays. If you are nostalgic for this game, then you won’t be disappointed. However, the makers need to make an updated version for the iPad as this was a disappointment.

No good. You can keep the app. We want our money back.

Loved Myst on our iPad and expected at least the same from Riven. There is no smooth flow walking around. You can’t look up, down or move around. Just swipe from one screen to another. It’s hard to tell if you’ve turned a quarter turn or all the way around, losing all perspective of the surroundings. The frustration of not knowing which direction we were looking or moving was too hard to get past and quit after about two hours of never finding anything interesting.

After playing realmyst with the moving and flowing screen just as the original computer game worked. This is merely screen shots! We want to CRY!

This is horrible and unplayable, it’s just pictures!

If you have played the PC version, then stay away. This is merely a shadow of the original, which we loved when we played it years ago. If you have never played this game before you may enjoy it, but be warned it is nothing like the original game.

We played this game two years ago and it was never finished. We emailed and they said it would be done soon. They wouldn’t give us our money back knowing they sold us a game that was not done. So is it done?

We had played Myst with our mother as a teen, but we had never gone on to Riven. When we found the games were available for our iPad, we became excited and decided to start again from the beginning. The graphics and visual flow that Cyan accomplished with realMyst were incredible, so we had expected far more from Riven than what we have received. Honestly, we want our money back. We haven’t even been able to play for five minutes past the introductory videos because the graphics and visual flow are so incredibly horrid. Movement is nothing compared to Myst. It doesn’t even feel like a continuation of the same game. Definitely not what we thought that we were paying for. INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTED!

Incredible visuals, mind-blowing puzzles, and an engaging story make this one of our all-time favorite games ever. We’ve reintroduced it to a new generation with the iPad version, and our nephew can’t stop playing it. Hours of great memories solving puzzles and exploring a lush, detailed world. This will be in our iPad forever.

This is flippin Myst, Yeah!!! It is beautiful and hard. Just like Myst, it even move the old way unlike realMYST, U should totally get it, if u r ready 4 a challenge!

This is a classic adventure game. Don’t expect quickie puzzles or HO scenes – you have to wander your way through beautiful scenes, take notes, be very observant and patient. It is like being in a foreign country without a map and no sparkles to guide you, thank goodness! The music is mostly quiet or non-existent so you can totally immerse yourself in the beautiful environments if you wear headphones. No problems running on our 32GB iPad 2 with the latest iOS 7.

We really enjoyed playing Riven again. We were surprised that we recalled so little from our first experience with the game ages ago. It made the game fresh-feeling. Of course it would be great to have a full 3d experience but we understand that it will not happen due to the amount of work that would have to be redone. Thank you Cyan! Bring other Myst games to iPad!

There’s nothing quite like it. We think this was the greatest in the franchise, and we’re grateful to be able to enjoy it again without worrying about discs.

What a fantastic classic game Gameplay is fantastic sound quality is great overall very happy.
