Shredder Chess Lite is a Education/Board/Strategy game from Eiko Bleicher, first launched in 18th December 2009.
It’s rated 4+ and currently has 19+ ratings on the App Store.

What Makes Shredder Chess Lite Stand Out

Shredder, the most successful chess program ever, is now also available for the iPhone. You can play against Shredder and solve chess puzzles. It offers the usual Shredder standard for your pocket.

The 12 times computer chess world champion Shredder is able to mimic the play of a human chess player with any playing strength. He even deliberately makes typical human mistakes in those levels.

Solve 100 built in chess puzzles. Shredder keeps track of your performance and offers advice if needed.

You can adjust Shredder’s playing strength and, if you like, Shredder automatically adjusts his strength to yours. He even calculates an Elo rating for you. This is how the playing strength of chess players is typically measured.

During the game a coach is watching your moves and warns you if you are about to make a mistake.

See how you are getting better and better the more games you play and the more chess puzzles you solve.

Community Insight:

It broke the roles by illegally moving a pawn diagonally with out a peace to capture.

This was a great app to get us started. You can easily rewind to any point in the game and change your move at any time. Also gives you suggestions. You can also save your game for later analysis or just to rewatch. But now that we're past 1500 Elo, we're looking for a stronger chess engine.

We love this one. You are given suggestions a move might not be the best choice and a hint of a better one. As we played game after game our memory of the game improved, as did our confidence. We found our skill grew. Very engaging for us. We've tried many chess games and this for us is a keeper. Thanks.

Your tutor works well until you don't go up in scale. At that point in the game playing your algorithm changes and starts playing so far above our level that is not a trainer at all it's just an ego trip for you. Sure glad we didn't spend the money to buy the full version.

Since updating to iOS 8, the app freezes when we try to start a new game or ask the app for a suggestion.

Given Apple's treating its customers like children, the devs have done all they could. This saves game moves and lets you copy them to paste in your email.

Not a person, betas lose as a program can to personhood.

The only chess app that's not here to make a quick profit, but here to help the user.

We tried many different chess apps and this one is outstanding. It is challenging and has improved our game considerably. The puzzles are excellent.

This is the best chess app that we have found. Easy to use powerful and a great interface. This app is awesome for both beginners and experts alike.

Really helped improve our game. Will buy the full version soon.

This is one of the best apps we have. Ill probably upgrade to the full version once we can beat elo 1500 :).

Enough said just wish it was full screen for iPhone 5.

This is coming from a person who is not great at chess. We have enjoyed playing the computer and trying to learn from our mistakes. The lite app is pretty awesome.

Updated to the iPhone 5 & bought the full version, for the screen optimization & other features, not disappointed.

Between the puzzles, coach, diagrams, and automatic computer adjusted elo, this app is really fun. We haven't played chess for long but this app makes a game we always thought was too boring to play, really enjoyable to learn.

Tactic puzzles are so addicting.

This is by far the best chess app we've tried. Especially for some like us trying to relearn how to play after a 10 year break. We just wish there was a red board and pieces, but thats trivial compared to how good the app is.

Outstanding. Most novel feature: auto-adjusts to your skill level (if you want it to). Another clever feature is a speedometer-shaped meter that lets you know if your current position is stronger or weaker than your opponent's. Finally, this app incorporates a very strong, highly adjustable chess engine. As a possible downside, recognize that this app does not provide a platform for 2 human players to play each other.

This is the best chess game we've downloaded. Shredder reminds us of playing chess with our father.

Im new to Chess and Ive tried MANY other apps to learn an improve and Shredder lite is the best free Chess app BY FAR ! When we become a Grand Master someday (or in another life lol) we will credit Shredder for all of our accomplishments.

We think this is a great chess game their are a ton of pieces and boards it very addicting if you like chess.

For a solo chess game this is the one we were looking for. Fabulous in all aspects. We use chess with friends for multiplayer but this for solo. We've learned a lot from it. Love how it adjusts its skill level after each game. Highly recommended.

Great for a free game. You have the option to buy the pro version if you want the highest difficulty levels.

The lite version has so many options.

Adjusts to your skill level, easy to understand interface, great.

Makes it more fun and easier to improve. Great app.

Great chess game for the iPod/iPhone. The computer automatically sets it's difficulty so that you have a challenge! A must have if you like chess.

We tried some other chess apps, this one is definitely the best.

We love the scaling AI; we're a big fan of that. The only aggravation we have, which is universal to many chess apps, is that far too many times do we make a move we didn't want to.

The best features of the dozen or so free chess apps we downloaded. Love that there is constant feedback, and it is either subtle or explicit so you can still discover the best moves on your own if you like. We will upgrade to the free version when it is a universal app (iPad and iPhone). But we won't pay twice for the same app.

We love this app. We play it non-stop.

No way we're paying twice for the same app to get it on iPhone and iPad. C'mon at least make the iPad version universal and keep the price a bit higher than standard version… Call it Shredder HD or something. Overall kudos for the slick implementation, we want to buy but it's all versions or none for us. We'll stick with Stockfish (free and universal) for now.

As a casual player, this app has given us a challenging chess machine on the go. We only wish it provided the dynamic hints that fritz does.

Great app but crashing and freezing up with the iOS 8 update. Please fix.

We can't see the board or the pieces clearly! We're a level 1900 to 2000 player and we just can't see the boards or pieces well enough! We play without aides and assists and we feel the boards and pieces can be designed a little better that is easier and better on the eyes! We like the game and its rating system! Just design a better board and pieces is all we ask.

Plays near optimal in early stages, but makes unexplainable errors near end-game. A sure-win strategy is to just trade pieces and then take advantage of awful play. Like it for practicing early opening play.

Apps work fine in iOS 7. We upgrade to iOS 8 and apps started to freeze a lot. Now even can make a first move! Hope there is a fix very soon for this.

Enjoyed the app, but with the Sept 2014 installation of OS8 on our iPhone, no longer works. The app opens, but not a single button works. Update soon perhaps.

Did it just tell us that taking a knight with our queen only to be taken by other knight is the right move when it clearly wasn't? Many flaws in the puzzle category. We played over 30 puzzles and caught the computer multiple times telling us to make bad moves.

This app is probably the best chess app out there. There is a MAJOR problem with the newest update however: it will not even open. Re-installing does no justice. When it was opening it was easily worth 5 stars.

The people that write reviews always think "they can do it better" or that "this doesn't suit their 'superior' intellect. Give us a break – the bottom line is that 99.9% of people don't even scratch the surface of "knowing" how to play chess and this app is so good that it will suit 99.9% of the people out there just perfectly. It doesn't make errors, graphics are great and above 1100 it is pretty challenging. If you are a "chess master" this is not for you – if you're part of the leisure-average-good-pretty good at-chess crowd – then you're in great hands.

Awesome app. Until recent update it will not let us open. We're reluctant to purchase the full version for this reason. We are patiently waiting for bug fix so we can get our daily chess fix. Thanks.

Guess we're not the only one. Since the last update, it won't open at all. Had to download another chess app but just ain't the same. Can u guys fix this quick please? Thanks.

The new update crashes the app It does not open Please fix, thanks Otherwise great app. Look forward to it working again.

We tap on this app and all it shows us is a picture and the word shredder. Doesn't let us play. We would give this 0 stars but we can't if we want to post this comment.

It crashes every time we try to open it.

The new update won't let us open it anymore!!!!! Please fix this asap.

The last version worked great on our Touch but the latest version does not respond anymore….it keeps crashing! Its a great app but this needs to get corrected.

This is the best chess game that we tried ever, our ELO is over the lite version but we found very useful to teach this beautiful game to our kids. Definitely we'll go for the upgrade version. Highly recommendable.
