"This is a turn-based game for people who don’t like turn-based games, and a roguelike shooter for people who hate roguelike shooters." – TouchArcade 4/5

Space Grunts combines fast paced arcade action with turn-based gameplay.

The year 2476, Earth’s space-federation has been building moon-bases across the galaxy. One of those moon-bases has been sending a distress signal.

Space Grunts are a group of intergalactic "problem" solvers, sent to investigate..

You play one, out of a team, of Space Grunts, and your mission is simple: find your way into the moon-base, and figure out what has happened. You’ll have to fight your way through aliens, robots, security drones and base-systems. Find the lower levels of the moon-base, and get to the core of the problems.

Consumables

A large collection of consumables can be found all over the moon base from weapon enhancers, to destructive toys, armor, explosives, system-hacks, and more. Use the items wisely to advance deeper into the moon-base.

Weapons

Starting with three standard Grunt weapons, you will be able to enhance them for more fire-power and range. On your way you’ll also find alternate weapons, and melee weapons.

Secrets

There are various ways to complete the game, anomalies leading to weird places, underground routes, and mysterious items to transport you to other area’s of the moon-base. On top of these there are secret rooms and area’s located all over the base, so never a dull moment!

Can you find the core of the problems?

Hear from the Players – Space Grunts Reviews

Find out what gamers are saying about Space Grunts:

This might be Orange Pixels best game. Its turn-based but fast & snappy. It pays real tribute to classic roguelikes, packed with danger and a huge variety of items and enemies, requiring a good amount of strategy to survive. Lately we’ve been having a blast playing it on the iPad Pro with a nimbus controller (thanks for having controller support!), which streamlines the interface and speeds up the experience even more. Highly recommended if youre into the rogue scene.

A brilliant genre mashup that deserves a place on every device, and at just under 56 MB installed, should never require removal for newer, larger gaming endeavors. Hats off to the indie studio behind this gem. Thanks for iPhone X support!

We’ve been a huge fan of Orange Pixel since Meganoid hit the AppStore years back, so our review is probably going to be pretty bias (just laying it out there, also of note, we’ve become a pretty big TBS and Roguelike fan over the last couple years). But, this is definitely up there among the best games that they have put out. We don’t know if Heroes of Loot or this, Space Grunts, is our #1 favorite OP game, but they both give up an amazingly spectacular run for it. The controls might take some getting use to, as they’re virtual, but resizing is coming in an update and ATM you can place every button wherever you’d like on the screen. Once we played about 3 games, they were perfect. We couldn’t imagine playing it any other way. The mix of action and turn-based gameplay is done incredibly well. We really just can not stop gushing about every aspect of the game. The menus are well done, the UI layout/map setup is on point, the graphics are killer (though they may not look it in the AppStore screens, the game looks GREAT in motion – check out some HQ vids!), the roguelike aspect is done perfectly—It’s a great game. One that has already (VERY VERY quickly) earned it’s spot on our own GOTY list (#2 of 2 ATM [Feb]) – but we wholeheartedly recommend this to roguelike fans itching for the genre to take a turn towards more arcade-based gameplay. =oD update The new update rocks… Thank you for the resizing controls option, the new item and giving each character a level upgrade once they beat the game (having something that sticks with you after making it through that was a great decision…) – and the tweaks. This has very quickly become, not only one of our favorite games of the year, but also one of our favorite roguelikes ever. GET IT!!!!

It’s a good little game. Controls are a little funky at times, but otherwise you’re given what they show. Certainly worth more than 1.99.

This game is fun, fast paced, and a neat twist on dungeon crawlers! Nice graphics, sound effects, and music! This update seems to have an update loop however, it keeps wanting to update. EDIT: Deleting and reinstalling seems to have fixed this. Keep up the good work!

It’s the most action packed turn based game we’ve played. This game takes all the junk out of roguelikes, leaving the elements that make procedurally generated dungeons great shine. Well worth the cost.

We consider this to be one, out of the hand-full, of games worth playing on a phone. The app store is a trash fire when it comes to games, but we had quite a bit of fun with this one, for a couple of weeks.

No real tutorial, subpar graphics (touted as "retro" but still not pretty), overall not satisfying. You have better uses for your iDollars.

Good fun but hope they’ll re-implement class specific leaderboards.

We enjoyed this one. It does a lot of things well. The environment is as dangerous as the enemies, it’s always fun to open up a room and find it full of radiation or fire. The enemies are interesting, we like the ones with predictable behavior that you can dance around without getting hurt. The only thing we didn’t like was the mandatory getting shot whenever we opened a door. Besides a remote control bomb, there was no way of avoiding that. Might we suggest shoot able doors?

Worth the money, everyday we spend much more time on this game!

Once again Orange Pixels knocks it out of the park! From the unique graphics style, to the sounds and gameplay, this game screams fun & polish! This game is also a fully premium game with no shenanigans. The gameplay is really well done. There are lots of weapon types and a decent amount of ammo given with whatever class you choose. There is also a daily challenge mode which is pretty cool. The humor is also great in the game and the randomized levels keep things fresh. The dev is very active with the community at the touch arcade forums and has incorporated requests and changes. The on screen controls are also fully customizable, even resizable, and the buttons can be moved to anywhere you like on the screen. Really well done dev. Thank you for an awesome time!

It’s a generated dungeon crawler, but you never level up or gain new abilities. Too repetitive.

Hated the controls at first, but then got used to them. We still think they could be better. Hopefully they get fixed up soon in an update.

Now this is a turn based game we can enjoy! First off — it’s sci-fi (SWEET). The retro graphics and sound fit the game perfectly. You have to think. Going in all guns a blazing will get you killed fast. The variety of weapons, equipment, and enemies is cool. Good replay value. Thanks Pascal Brestebroer for your turn based goodness.

Great game nice pixel art and the gameplay is addictive !

Orange Pixel has made a lot of fun games. This time they stepped it up to the next level. This game is fantastic.

Good game, same vibe as Nuclear Throne just turn based. We would like a wait button or more variety to the weapons.

Easily the best rouge like we’ve had in a LONG time. Plenty to keep you coming back again and again.

Love this game. Would be even better if we could use our mfi controller.

Excellent game for those who’ve played his other games, this one is more future based with aliens and lasers and such. Very good. Roger like, 2d, old school game. Love it.

Great game overall. Good pixel graphics. Our only gripe (literally the only complaint we have) is the controls. We feel there could be a great swipe movement/tap to shoot control scheme implemented. We like the option to change controls, personally we moved the shoot button Right in middle of the directional pad for one handed play, but a swipe-type mechanic could work well. 5***** hoping that the controls can be updated.

We’ve almost had enough of rogue likes, most are the same old thing, play a few times and it’s the same old stuff, not offering enough to keep up our interest. OP did it right with this one, great pixel art graphics, great sounds, the right amount of randomness each run… Just makes you want to again and again. Grab it now for $2 and get a heck of a lot more than your money’s worth!

We like this game a lot on the PC, especially after the patch that fixed the sensitive movement issue. It appears they haven’t fixed that issue on the ios version, because it’s real easy to accidentally double move. An often deadly thing to do, very frustrating. 5 stars once that’s fixed, this game is great fun, and a rare sci-fi style roguelike. PS. If you’re having trouble with the inventory button too close to the movement controls, change the positions in the options menu.

Another great title from these developers! This game is a breath of fresh air in an App Store full of stale roguelikes. Great job : D.

We played about 10 minutes of this game, and while we like it on a conceptual level, the D-Pad is atrocious. We would go with a slightly modified 868-HACK style control scheme (it’s our favorite implementation of a 4-directional control scheme on iOS): swipe once to face that direction, swipe again to move one tile in that direction, swipe and hold to keep moving in that direction. It’s pretty easy to implement too. Hope that helps! This game seems really cool. :D.

The game is extremely enjoyable but it’s really hard to progress. And we feel that the player is encouraged to blast open boxes for items but sometimes a container might fill the room with poisonous gas, leaving you no where to go but die. We think it would be better if the gas would eventually evaporate but it doesn’t. It’s a little too challenging for casual play.

This is a great little rogue like. Looks amazing, the UI is awesome and the weapons are really cool. The controls can be iffy. Pressing less doesn’t always work. It’s really important to have a wait button in these type of games. This game, like tiny rogue, is missing a wait button. Fix the controls and add a wait button and this review will bump to 5 stars. Oh please add this game to the Vita as well! Thanks.

Everything Seems gr8 but the joystick and inventory placement is too close, every time we try to walk up/Forwards the inventory opens.

5 stars if we could consistently continue our game. But after using other apps and returning, our game progress resets and all we can do is start a new game. We run on an iPad Air and an iPhone 6. Same result on both devices.

It looks good and is almost fun, but there’s something way off with the virtual joystick, we have to tap left multiple times and it still goes the wrong direction or doesn’t process our tap, makes the game loose all fluidity. We’ve tried moving the area it’s at didn’t work, and its the same way on our iPad, so we hope this can be patched it’s incredibly inconvenient. Otherwise seemed fun, couldn’t get very far.

For some reason it’s incredibly difficult to press left, but the other directions seem ok. Makes it pretty frustrating to play.

Ibought mistake And ye shall not be returned us the money.
