Spellsword Cards: Origins Reviews

Game is great, but the iPhone version is cut off at the top of the screen, stopping the player from seeing some important info. Doesnt make the game unplayable, but it is distracting and annoying, stopping full enjoyment.

We reinstalled and now its telling us to buy the game again. That seems like a rip off. So we bought Slay the Spire instead of repurchasing this, and Im having way more fun.

This is a good game but we shouldnt have to buy it twice. We paid for it when we initially downloaded it in May, 2019. We enjoyed it, including experimenting with all of the classes. Now we tried to return in January, 2021, only to discover that almost all of the classes are now locked behind an in-app purchase. We get giving a taste for free and asking to pay to unlock the full game, but those of us who owned the game before the switch should have credit for the in-app purchase. (And yes, the restore button does nothing.) This would be a five-star game without this issue.

We guess we shouldn’t have updated; the app info claims this supports iOS 9.0 and up, but after updating the app it crashes on launch on our iOS 10 device.

Im not sure what the new update did because it broke our game. Now all content is locked again and we cant restore our purchases.

Have been playing on and off for almost a year. We absolutely love this game and wish they would have some updates or new classes/races. Id definitely pay to unlock those. We got the most usability for our buck out of this game. Highly recommend if you are into these type of card games as its the best one out there. (Similar to night of the full moon with more sepia/artsy graphics versus full moon being more modern looking)

We just updated the game and it says unlock all but it wont let us restore nor unlock it and say requires internet connection when we have one nothing happens when Im the the purchase screen we bought this game near the time it first came out and now idk how to get our stuff back.

Positives 1. You get your moneys worth 2. Fun and at times addictive 3. Well thought out & put together for a simple Rouge / Dungeon Style Game Negatives 1. Need Landscape Mode, especially when you have a lot of cards (swiping left to right to get to a specific card led to too many FAT FINGER mistakes!!) 2. Really poor documentation to get player up to speed; learning curve was unnecessarily too steep 3. Only one save file. Seriously?! You cant create five (5) separate game files in case we want to switch Classes, etc. How about one save file per class. 4. One default mode: we miss the days of at least 5 different levels from Easy to Nearly Impossible Fix the negatives and we will gift the game to our friends. Nice simple game that takes about a few minutes (if you die fast) to a few hours to kill the last Boss Mob. Thanks for the game.

The game used to be enjoyable til the update came and now Im getting destroyed within the first couple fights. Its not that Im not reading our cards and strategizing as we play but it seems almost as if the game is deliberately not giving us good cards. We cant use cards that are hitting 1 or 2 and the boss has like 55 hp. Its just not efficient. If the next update improves the game, the rating will change. Its a good for sure but Im just not enjoying whats happened to it. And for the people complaining about price, its worth it. Just let the dev(s) just tweak a few things itll be as good as gold.

Fantastic card game, quick to play with interesting options and approaches with a lot of replayability both within and across classes and elemental choices. But latest update has turned it into a slog and what was once challenging has become frustrating and discouraging. Used to be a lot of fun to play but no more. Hopefully next update will be an improvement instead of a regression.

This is a fantastic title and what we would call is the dark souls of games, criticism here is your mana should refresh like your actions do, instead of only being limited if you dont own a mana recharge card -_-

We love the variety and different variations of gameplay while also having that RMG in it.

This is a fantastic little game. Satisfies our MTG and Hearthstone desire.

In depth fun game that keeps your attention.

With tons of different combinations and a huge card library, this game has devoured hours!

It is free. It is really good. More diversity than Slay the Spire but without the animation and more card focused. By the end you want to play again. And it is free. There are supposedly paid races and classes that we have not ran into yet. We have two full playthroughs with basic races and classes. We think some of the other races and classes are the paid content. Definitely worth giving the devs money and probably will search for a way to do so soon.

Really enjoy this game! Its complex and fun to play!!

Sure, we dont have to subscribe to continue playing, but our friend didnt get the app in time and now hell never play it because he refuses to pay a subscription for mobile games- a sentiment we share. The game itself is solid as can be, with gameplay that basically challenges you unless youre lucky and receive a broken combo.

This game… THIS GAME! Its the most fun deck builder we’ve played in, well, ever. But seriously? The enemy uses a 3 block card and gets 5 block. The enemy has no actions left and plays a hard swing. We dont like it when a game makes you think you have control but you dont.

Great game super addictive and easy to grasp, we love that we can close it anytime we want and when we open it it will be around the same spot without fail, on our wish is that there was more variety of races, and cards, and also maybe the cards you unlock could be more unique not just cool borders around existing cards but still amazing game none the less.

The game starts off very intimidating. Youre not given any sort of useful descriptions or direction on how to build a class, and frankly some of the enemies are BS with sub-optimal builds. However, the game is very clean, interesting, and exciting, but not very special to the other options.

So, to start upfront: the demo leads us to believe that the game is actually well made and quite enjoyable. The pace is great, creativity and themes are all there, with a touch of dnd referencing. Wonderful really. BUT, and its a big one. The App Store says purchases in game, but what it fails to tell you is you will be locked out after 10min of play(or if you sleep your phone or close out the game) and it will tell you to pay a subscription in order to keep playing. Major downside. If it was spend money for more characters/cards etc or 1 upfront cost to own the game, this would be probably a 4.5-5star review. But this is blatant false advertising and it should be taken off the App Store until it is revised to reflect a subscription cost as mandatory, and that your only downloading a demo.

This could be a pleasant deck builder but a big boss with three time the players hit points that begins battle invulnerable, reduces players attacks to pin pricks, discards players hand every second round and does massive damage is, to say the very least, poorly designed. The poor design of the final encounter renders all that came before pure tedium. The devs missed three important rules that make a game enjoyable, Balance, balance & balance.

One of our favorite mobile games. Since the sale to playond we now require data coverage to play, receive ads and battery usage increased. We buy pay once offline style games for a reason. Ruining one of our favorites, thanks.

You are only allowed to play for 10 mins, then you have to pay for a subscription.

We really want to like this game, but unfortunately a poorly designed interface and an AI that is rigged to win removes that possibility. The first problem starts with a bunch of character creation that uses a series of hidden stats that may combine to make unplayable characters. After many attempts at this game we have found that the character choices are very limited and once you find a functioning one there is little to no reason to change. As for the user interface the enemies slam through there actions with no explanation. Luckily there is a history list during play. Unfortunately when you click on anything it shows up as a small text box under your finger. Yep. Our fingers still arent see through. Hey when we can get an invisible hand we will. But our final frustration was a boss that constantly made us discard our whole hand and raised shields. We would have 0-2 cards per turn at max level and maybe do 1 damage. Basically we got locked down in game because thats called a challenge? Why not just click on the boss and have it start with a defeated text? Honestly if the game moves to a full 2.0 overhaul Id try it again. We love deck builders, we really do. We’ve beta tested a few too. And thats why we feel thats where this is.

The game is very fun and unique (only did one play-through though so not sure about its longevity). We would pay a couple bucks for it but its a monthly subscription which seems scammy. Id rather own it outright than forget about a subscription on an old game or have pricing change without us noticing. The game is good but not worth the hassle. Too bad, though feels like a lot of room for combos and fun deck-building ideas.

The buttons no longer work in the main menu. Its not frozen, the UI responds, but nothing happens after tapped. 5/5!

This developer is cancer on mobile industry! Stay away from playond and bending spoon! They are taking away premium games and making them subscription only even after you already paid the game previously it will still push to the face the subscription. Too bad we purchased this many months ago, we are unable to refund.

Spent $3 to purchase this premium game, but thanks to Playond we now have to now spend more than that per month to continue playing.

We have gotten a LOT of enjoyment and replay-ability from this game. The combinations to choose from for your hero allow for some really interesting interactions. You can experiment with different classes and powers, which can be enhanced by the cards you can find or get from the Blacksmith. The game benefits from interesting features like occasional random events, and unlockable cards each time you defeat bosses, even if you dont win with a particular hero. Definitely worth a try!

This game is very fun we beat the lunch 3 times we just wish there was more enemy art events and cards as we have had to do quite a few runs we know the ins and outs of most decks and races the paths mix it up but only just a bit. Overall good game now we just want some more!

We say so because we would buy it and this game deserves more content. It’s great – like Dream Quest but less frustrating and more to the point. Tied with Ascension for our favorite deck builder. And we see the continued free updates – y’all deserve some support for the work you’re putting in.

Offline play, no in-app purchases, and one of the most thoughtful, engaging, fun experiences we’ve ever had for our commute. Oh, its also brilliantly designed for one-handed play. Take a risk, and give yourself some time to understand why this game is so perfect.

Although traditional Chinese is listed in the language drop down list, choosing it has no effect. Please fix it.

This is a really good game. There are some very confusing aspects we have encountered while playing around with our deck, and some random events we have encountered are not so random. There is an event that, if chosen, will make you discard a card out of three randomly chosen cards. After discarding one of our cards, usually being one of three valuable cards, we then get a merchant or treasure chest that never fails to replicate the card we chose to discard from the random event. After several of these types of encounters we have concluded that this game, having much deep strategy, tactical thinking, and challenging choices, is also calculated in such a way ( Im guessing at the very start of battle) that you already have a chosen percentage of defeating the final boss, or really any foe that you encounter. Similar to how the random event is not so random.

Can we get an arcade/deck builder mode where we go in with the cards we want (picked from cards we’ve unlocked in the normal adventure mode) and try and see how long we last with ramping difficulty? Itd be a great way to test classes and synergy with cards without all the rng involved. Not a requirement because the game is already above our expectations.

We’ve really enjoyed this game – hard enough with enough variety to be replayable and no in-game $$! We’ve won with every race/class (except Bard). It can be annoying to get through all 3 locations, only to get slaughtered by the Lich, but keep tweaking and it can be done. Fun card game!

Big fan of deck builders and this one is no exception. A few issues op up here and there. The last boss against certain builds seems to be almost impossible, and about 1/3 times we fight him, he somehow turns our entire deck into skeletons. Like the entire deck. We pick 5 skeletons on our turn, he gets another free turn, we go, and we pick 5 more skeletons. We’ve chased his cards and he does NOT have a card that says automatically end the game by turning your opponents deck into a worthless pile of monsters. Like… We can kill the third level boss and barely take a point of damage, and then the Lich will kill us with barely a scratch on him. Balancing needs help.

Dollar for dollar we’ve had more fun with this game than any other iOS title in quite some time. Easy to learn and difficult to master. No cloud based online only bs so you can pick up and play and quickly close it out to do something else on your phone without losing progress. We do wish certain systems like the quiver, souls, and other skills had a better explanation from the get go. We would also like for it to be more obvious what the gameplay differences are from one race/class to the next, but we suppose the vague descriptions encourage the player to try each one and find out. Wonderful game overall and a great value at $2.99.

Sometimes you just get crappy hands dealt and we’ve often found myself unable to do any damage at all with certain builds in the very first fight. But if RNG works in your favor, it makes for an interesting game to waste a few minutes at a time on.

Finished all achievements so we’ve surely enjoyed the game. Looking forward to future expansions.

Game is deceptively deep. Three starting character traits can yield different synergies with varying degrees of effectiveness. The real challenge is discovering the optimal build for each combination. The hook is finding a synergy that not only gets you safely to the end-game, but allows you to dominate the final boss. True: the card graphics are very minimal with no animations and limited effects. True: you will die frequently, its a Roguelike. But like all great RLs, death is its own reward, as new cards unlock after each run. True: the final boss is very difficult, but what good is a final boss if they arent challenging. This game is not for the shallow, impatient or anyone who doesnt enjoy the challenge of roguelike mechanics. This game will definitely appeal to the patient, tactically-minded player who doesnt need their hand held, doesnt require AAA graphics to hold their attention, and values the challenge and replayability of roguelike games.

It would be perfect if there was a multiplayer option. Besides that we have no complaints, totally worth the buy.

95-98% of the cards are useless and bloat the card pool. The spell cards are terribly designed because it uses a resource called mana in order too play and to gain mana you need to use cards to generate mana that clogs your deck or generates low amount per turn. All characters you create will choose an element type and the only way to benefit from your element type is to have a decent mana pool or generate mana. This isnt even the worst part about spell cards and mana; half the races you choose from never get an increased starting mana pool without spending your level up on them if you get. Lucky enough to pick it as a level up reward. The locations dont mean jack. After defeating the first and second boss, you can choose between two different locations and neither option changes anything of value. No unique events tied to the location, no different cards tied to them. Locations dont add an extra sense of direction or real option. Block is useless and so are their cards. The first card we would ever get rid of our deck are cards that add block because they add little to no protection and clog up our deck; we hate drawing them. The only useful defensive cards are discards, invincibility, and cards that stop attacks or actions. All other defensive cards clog your deck. The only interesting mechanic Spellsword Cards: Origin does have would be card fusing. Combining two cards that havent been fused is an interesting way to thin out the deck and form a single card with both effects. Those cards cannot be upgraded after being fused which means youll have to decide if the card fusion is worth it or not. Some cards are better off not fully upgraded or at all before being fused together. All in all, Spellsword Cards: Origin is quite similar to another card game called Meteorfall, except most cards are terrible and you can fuse cards together.

The idea and implementation are great, yet we have found simulated difficulty multiple times. For instance we use a card that will remove up to 3 action points. We use the card and it removes 3 bringing the enemy to 0. The enemy has 0 mana, yet uses 3 attack cards and 1 mana card and kills us… Of course its the final enemy before we can shrine and fight the boss. This is impossible, they were not cards played that require no ap or mana, we watched the entire thing and they were 100% action and mana cards. There have been multiple times where this occurs. Other times we see an enemy use a lvl 1 block, 1 star, and receive 6 total block. We have also had situations where we had 5 block the enemy uses a single damage card and we not only lose all 5 block but take damage as well. In all these instances there were no status effects on myself or the enemy. We cant keep playing a game that randomly decides when it will kill us, a game that hardly plays by the rules it lays out. We wont request a refund because we really enjoyed the game, but we wont waste any more time on it.
