What Makes Subwords: Word Game & Trivia Stand Out
Subwords is an exciting mix between a trivia and a word game. Words are split into syllables and you have to put them back together as fast as possible. The words in every level are bound to a certain topic, so you have to know about the topic to solve it. But it's no problem if you aren't that familiar with a specific topic: Simply click the bulb to learn something new!
Features:
- 45 levels, ranging from animals and fruits to European countries, our solar system or greek mythology etc.
- 20 bonus levels built specifically for kids up to an age of 8 years.
- Two modes: Classic and Timed!
- Fully accessible via VoiceOver and Voice Control
- Learn spelling and syllabification of words, plus new vocabulary!
- Head control: Play the game by just moving your head! (Requires a device with a TrueDepth camera)
- Play in different languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian)

Community Insight:
We kept selecting syllables and had to keep clicking on the same one six times! It totally blew our time.
The puzzles are challenging enough but it doesnt take very long to get through all of the topics. New topics are promised every month but are rarely delivered. Im very disappointed we paid to play. Spend your money elsewhere.
There's a HUGE range of topics, which is always appreciated, but we can really tell how much thought was put into the creation and accessibility of the game. We were having a lot of trouble with the font, and they had enough foresight to add the dyslexic font and high contrast setting, something that many apps don't take the time to do. Another thing we love is the range of languages. We're multilingual and we've surprisingly taken to using this app as some fun casual practice for other languages, and we would LOVE to see their selection of languages continue to expand. We would also love to see some color theme options that you can unlock with stars? Just another customization option that can let users choose fun color palettes :).
This game is pretty fun and addicting. It definitely requires some mental focus. The only complaint we have is that its pretty short, unless you make it a goal to replay a bunch of levels to try to beat your high score.
We are enjoying learning the game. It be a challenge. However, there seems to be a bug Ive encountered in the iPad version. We are not getting a response fairly often when touching various word fragments during timed play. Its a especially frustrating because the slow reaction means it limits your score. Disappointing. We hope it gets fixed.
Mostly we play this on our iphone; just today we opened it on our ipad and all the progress made with about twenty categories is nowhere to be found. Irritating. Our search for the perfect game carries on.
There's not much we can say about this game other than we love it. It helps that everyone can play. It's accessible with the native IOS screen reader, so even visually impaired people can play. But even people with full use of their sight should give this game a chance.
We were looking for something a little different, and definitely found it! This game is colorful and fun.
Have a great fun time using sub words.
Challenging, but not too much that you wanna give up. Forces your brain to start spinning in a different direction so you dont get bored of it, and get a new type of game. Thoroughly enjoy it.
We bought this Monday night. Im a FT working mom so Ive only maybe played 5-10 min a day. Its Thursday night and Im out of levels. We were shocked to run out of levels on a paid app. For that reason we are giving this 1 star. We are not one to really spend money on apps but stumbled across this while waiting at an apple store and liked the demo. It needs a lot more levels.
This game is beautiful and so much fun. The kids love it as well. Great for long drives and flights.
Addictive. Got it for one of our kids. But so far Im loving it.
We love this game. It took us a while to get 3 stars on every level/category, but it was fun getting there. Our ONLY complaint is that there are not enough levels. Id pay for more levels. Seriously.
We havent found a good word game in a long time. SubWords has expand our spelling abilities.
We just bought this game. We like the look of the game, the mechanics, the sound effects, and the many categories to choose from. So why only 4 stars? Because you have to continuously choose either Classic or Timed after every completed game. Seems like this is a preference that one should be able to set in settings as in other games with similar options. As someone who never plays timed games, it would be nice to be able to play through each game without having to choose Classic over and over and over again.
We enjoy the game – its just the right amount of challenging. However, there just arent that many levels. It has the content that we would expect from a free game, not a paid one. Im guessing it will be more worth it in the future as they add more levels, but right now we regret paying for it.
We like this game a lot! We just lost 1 1/2 hours to it when we meant to play for 15 minutes. One reviewer said this is a trivia game. We will agree, but many of the words can be found by eliminating the ones you know first. Of course if you slept through chemistry and geography (and life), we guess youre screwed. Try another game. Our only complaint is that there are levels locked that we really wish we could bypass, like the Solo Artists category; we listen to Alternative (all years), Classical, and Classic Rock. Since many of the names are from Pop Singers, this one took us several replays until the same names came up again such that we could remember them. (we will forget them tomorrow; we since we dont listen Pop except for crossover songs, like Twenty One Pilots, Muse, and Nothing But Thieves. And, yes, we know we are a snob.) BUT, even this complaint doesnt stop us. Since you can try each level again (and again if necessary), you should be good. We would classify this as a trivia/word/challenging/fun/addictive game.
It is pretty fun but could you make it so you tried to beat other peoples scores.
Simple, fun and clean. Looks great. Fun to play.
This is much more of a trivia game then a word game. There are levels that are just outright impossible, ie: looking at forty bubbles that all contain two letters and being expected to construct Video game characters from it. Other levels like the presidents was more realistic and far more fun. We find we do not do the majority of the Timed challenges unless we have some familiarity of the subject, otherwise they simply cant be done. Thankfully developer doesnt require all levels to be finished to move on. Just pushing to do better each try will earn stars to keep moving on. Side note to the reviewer claiming to have finished the game with a perfect score…. BS you didnt do it. Compliments to the developer for keeping their response generic with that Phony. Ill be interested to see what the next evolution of the game is. There a some fun ideas, but you quickly can outgrow them and then your left with half the categories you know nothing about (see Solo Artists for a good example).
Could this game really be this bad? Same words over and over and over and over and over…..Ive looked everywhere for a way to advance, but we just keep seeing the same vegetables. Are there other levels or categories and we just havent found them? No challenge at all. Sooo many free games that are way better.
Im loving this game but cheese, colors, and Egyptian Mythology subjects seem to be suddenly gone for us? They were great.
Enjoying this to desires- not too complex but still stimulatingi.
For $1.99 we expected longer than 2 days of playing…. But it is a fun game and we enjoyed the challenge. We didnt have any issues with the colors but we can see how some people would. Im hoping there are updates that add more levels.
At first, its exciting but it gets boring. The time mode tired our brain too much and caused us to get stressed out for nothing.
We really enjoy this game and would love more levels! But some of the color schemes are so hard to read, we would love the option to either choose a specific color scheme, or turn on a colorblind mode to have better contrast. We are not colorblind but we really struggled to see the letters in some of the levels, especially the darkest colors in Greek mythology and presidents Overall an amazing game that is fun and definitely has replay ability. Its easy to get the hang of, and its not very high stakes to just play against your personal best. Its a game that doesnt require luck, just a little knowledge and practice. We are generally hesitant to play games that we have to buy first, but this one was absolutely worth it! Im only interested in casual and fun games because Im always busy and dont want to devote hours to our screen. This game is perfect for that because you can just play one level for a few minutes at a time. Absolutely amazing game.
This game is just plain old dumb. The levels are either ridiculously easy or impossibly hard. You dont learn anything, contrary to the description. Its not at all fun, just annoying. There are hundreds of better word games in the App Store. The hunting-for-syllables aspect of the game isnt challenging or stimulating, its just frustrating and dull. There is no real puzzle element to this either. This was a dumb recommendation for Apple to have made. Thumbs down big time.
Its not obvious in the photos and videos, but each level is randomly generated from a large word list, making it fun to play levels over and over again. Controls are simple and intuitive, and theres no unnecessary limitations (e.g., you can re-arrange letter tiles manually). We highly recommend grabbing this game.
The search for words is inventive and fun, though not very challenging. We manage three stars on classic immediately and on timed within two to three attempts. Our only real frustration is that once Im in a level there is no way to get back out to the start menu to choose something different unless we close the app and reopen it.
