Description

In the old days man tried to catch a glimpse of the future in the strangest of ways.

Experience the ancient Swedish phenomena of year walking through a different kind of first person adventure that blurs the line between two and three dimensions as well as reality and the supernatural.

Venture out into the dark woods where strange creatures roam, on a vision quest set in 19th century Sweden. Solve cryptic puzzles, touch and listen in your search to foresee the future and finally discover if your loved one will love you back.

Mysteries and clues await everywhere in Year Walk, but to fully understand the events that took place on that cold New Year’s Eve, you will have to delve deeper than the adventure and lose yourself between fact and fiction.

For the complete Year Walk experience, or if you’re curious about the folk lore on which Year Walk is based, we recommend downloading Year Walk Companion, available for free on the App Store.

"An iOS game like nothing else you’ve seen on the format to date.
This is a brave and truly original work"
Edge – 9/10

"Elegant and artful, Year Walk is an unmissable piece of work.
You can close the app and put down the phone, but the forest may spread beyond its glassy confines, its spindly, silver-skinned trees taking root in your own home, your own dreams."
Eurogamer – 9/10

"A game this distinctive, this different, this thrillingly new is the best possible demonstration of the format’s versatility; indeed, of the narrative power of the interactive medium. Simogo has made something very special here."
The Telegraph – 5/5

"It’s a gripping, somber, atmospheric, and elegantly-designed game, and everyone should play it.
I’ve never played anything quite like it."
Touch Arcade 5/5

"An incredible showcase for the potential of tablet games and will undoubtedly become influential over the next few years."
CVG – 9/10

"Simogo has packed Year Walk with a hefty share of spine-tingling jump scares, but it’s these external trappings that cause the game’s lore to get under your skin and stick with you long after your phone or tablet has been turned off."
Gamezebo – 4,5/5

"Year Walk is smart, thrilling, and absolutely stunningly crafted. It’ll throw you for a loop, leaving you transfixed to the screen until you shake out all of its dark secrets."
Mac|Life – 5/5

"As with any good page-turner, you won’t want to put this game down until you get to the end. It’s quite a journey, too. Year Walk is a beguiling adventure, and a truly memorable experience."
Pocketgamer – 8/10

Year Walk Reviews

Cons: it’s very easy to give into the temptation of looking for cheats when everything is confusing and you don’t understand the background lore. This game is definitely hard when you first play it without any background knowledge. We recommend exploring your surroundings and the game thoroughly in your first go around without the sole intention of finishing the game. Pros:This game is beautiful and weaves an interesting narrative. Our biggest regret is not trying to explore more and instead rushing towards the end when we initially played it. Every once in a while we download this game again. It’s a great game and we 100% recommend it.

This game consoles us whenever we play it.

We blazed through this amazing game without a guide or walkthrough- we really wish it was longer. Im super bummed that we finished so quickly. We want more content! Plus- Im seeing theres mechanics in other versions of the game that we cant use on the mobile version, like a MAP- which would have been helpful. Plus theres hints on the map to how to open that BOX- which Ill probably never figure out cause Im on iOS- actually, you can. The companion guide to the game in a separate app. Wow. That story is GRIPPING. Incredible! Im giving this one five stars, its well done. Extremely well done- even for how short it is.

We honestly loved this game. The puzzles are challenging and the story is very intriguing. We will say that it is important for someone playing this to get the companion. Besides having information about the research that went into the game, it is essential to unlocking the alternate ending.

We played this game years ago when it was first released, and just the other day thought about it though we couldnt remember what it was called! We searched through hundreds of our old apps that we had downloaded on the past and FINALLY found it. We vaguely remembered the game and actually couldnt remember how to solve any if the puzzles at all, which was a good thing in that it allowed us to play through the game again while having to really think! We loved it just as much the second time we played through, and Im excited to read through the companion app. Congratulations on this game, we thoroughly loved it (again).

This is a stylistic, smart, beautifully designed horror game that delves deep into Swedish mythology. Our only nitpick is that the game is too short, thus when youve gotten the hang of the puzzles and chosen to walk again, Year Walk is easy to solve a second time and, thus, the gameplay is quicker. But these are probably the best $4 we’ve spent in the App Store. This game deserves a larger following and all the purchases it can. Its premise is original, the controls are smooth, the illustrations stunning, and the myths behind it are intriguing. This is among our favorite games, and our #1 iOs horror game hands down.

Make sure you get to the true ending.

We love The Room series and games that have some mystery and storytelling. We kept putting off downloading this and cant figure out why. Its a beautiful game and doesnt explain itself, which we love. Youre able to explore and enjoy the story at your own pace and it unfolds in a lovely way. Kudos to the developer.

Thats some Grade A nightmare fuel there. Our only complaint is the post-game, which tries to turn this into a House of Leaves narrative post ipso facto. It was definitely an essential post-game, but we wish it had been a bit more refined.

The beginning of the game is a little rough since youre not sure what youre supposed to do and its hard to navigate the forest (I recommend drawing a map). We had to look at a walkthrough once to get us started and then we were able to solve the rest of the game on our own. The puzzles are very clever and the atmosphere is incredibly creepy (be prepared for some scary moments). We enjoyed playing it but considering how short it is we would expect it to cost less. The companion app does give some added value and an alternate ending but its not enough. Still, its a unique game and will give you an hour or two of great game play.

Originally we were a little harsh. We thought it was a bit slow to start. Perhaps a little baiting in with interactiveness early on would have helped. However, if you stick with it, it does get a bit more intriguing. We think a Sequel with a bit more substance would be right on time. Keep it coming. Thanks!

The game a really good and thought out. We loved the style and music. We think it was so cool to incorperate folklore into this game and we wish there were more games like this but there were a few issues. The game was really short and expensive. Id understand the price if the game was longer but its only a hour long, that is if you dont get too confused. And we wish that you could experience it for a little bit longer. The game was also VERY confusing and difficult. We were very stuck on the part when you follow the Huldra into the tree and ended up deleting the game 3-4 times to get a fresh start and make sure we didnt miss anything. We were also stuck on the part where you give the mylings to the kelpie (brooks horse) and ended up spending about an hour trying to get the mylings, and 2 days trying to get out of the tree thing. Although the game was great, it wouldve been better if it was longer, less expensive, or less difficult.

Interesting game and gorgeous aesthetic, but its not working right.

Amazing! The combination of horror and mystery made the game all the better, and the puzzles were enjoyable, to say the least. We WOULD give this game a 5/5 star. The only problem we have… Is the length. The length of the game is definitely NOT worth $4. Other then that, good job!

We really wanted to love this game. It really is lovely. Sadly the intentional shaky quality to the graphics gives us motion sickness & we have been unable to play for longer than a minute or two. Wish we could return it as it makes us nauseous.

You must download the campaign app or this is not worth it. The game went by too fast for the cost of the game. Very pretty game but we finished within an hour. Worth a play for the artwork. If you liked this game play the Rusty Lake series. Each game is longer and connected to one another. Rusty Lake is a slightly more disturbing version of this game, but significantly better.

Love this game but it wont play sound on our phone at all. Please patch it!

You can pass on this one. Too demonic. Device 6 is so much better.

We appreciate a challenging puzzle, but theres absolutely zero help in this game. Its also not friendly to people who are hard of hearing or who have ringing in their ears like we do. We cant get past the dark woods. Im assuming that you have to choose the path with appropriate scale tone, but its very frustrating for people with damaged hearing. Otherwise we absolutely loved the content and the graphics. Problem is that when you get stuck, youre 100% totally done with the game. So we guess Im done about 10 minutes in.

We were enjoying the game. We think Im pretty good at figuring out these types of games (like The Room, etc.), and we never look for hints or ask for help. To us thats cheating myself, but we got absolutely stuck on this one. After several days coming back to it from time to time, we finally broke down and searched for some hints. We were angry to find out that you basically had to break the rules of the game and do something you werent supposed to be able to do in order to progress. To us this is cheating on the part of the game makers. Im still mad about this.

We give this 2 stars! Im not very good at puzzle games, and yet, this game was over and done with in one after dinner sitting. There are maybe 4 puzzles to solve. Why would they charge for such a short game?

We had high hopes for this game, we love the Rusty Lake games and it seemed to be a similar feel, but thats all it has going for it. Cool graphics and creepiness, but overall a dull game that ends way too quickly. 3 stars if free, 2 stars since you have to pay.

The game came with no instructions and we had no idea how to proceed. There was no way to get any hints either.

Volume disappeared and cant fix it. Tried reinstalling. IPhone 11 with latest iOS and everything else on our phone works perfect. Looks nice too bad we cant finish it.

Horrible. Do not waste your money. Wandering aimlessly for crap we see on YT walkthroughs that arent on the game we paid too much money for. Very much a ripoff despite any backing by Apple. Huge disappointment since years ago, Device6 was so good. Refund our money.

Theres a difference between being challenging yet engaging and rewarding and being completely obtuse and impenetrable. Year walks puzzles are the latter. Theres also a difference between creating a creepy, haunting atmosphere and having jumpscares every time the player makes any progress. Again, year walk is the latter. It would be cynical to say the obnoxious difficulty is to stretch the games length out to justify asking for 4 dollars, but unfortunately that seems to be pretty accurate. The companion is a nice idea but the lore it provides is pretty categorically not helpful. The art and sound design are nice. If you want good puzzles and/or creepy atmosphere id recommend something out of the cube escape series (many of which are FREE) or even this same companys title DEVICE 6, which is superb. Year walk, however, is just too unintuitive and poorly executed to recommend.

We love this game so much and love the story and puzzles!

Gorgeous artwork and music, challenging puzzles, and skillful weaving of mythology into a compelling story. Im hooked!

This is one of the best iOS game we’ve ever played! It has an intriguing game play that pulls you along through a bizarre storyline. We really loved the folk lore and unique gameplay/design. Highly recommended!

Amazing design and an eerie mood with creepy sounds give you an interesting feel. We suggest playing this in a dark, quiet room. We’ve beat this game many times and its fun doing it again just because the experience is so enjoyable.

This is one of our favorite games of all time. Possibly better than Device 6. Run dont walk to play Year Walk.

We wasnt lying in the title; this game is our absolute favorite and we will always come back to it. The story telling and the images bring forth a mystery that is accessible to all levels of theorist and game detective and conjures a strange world that we’ve gotten lost in every time we play. There isnt much replay-ability but even with the same story over and over its still so much fun. The fact that its accompanied by a companion app and several short stories just shows you how much dedication went into this game. We cant really articulate how much we love this game because we honestly just think its perfect in its level of creepiness and strange beauty.

This is by far the best iPhone game we have ever played in our entire life. The depth of the story, the twists and turns, the eerie vibe of the forest, the puzzles, everything comes together to create an experience that will stick with you for a very long time. In fact, it will stick with ME for the rest of our life. We have a tattoo of the games logo (the minimalist goat head) on our inner forearm. It was our first ever tattoo and we havent regretted it once. Thats how good this game is, and how much the message contained within means to us. The overall message of the game is very deep and thoughtful, which we appreciated. The future is not something we should know!

We were looking for a puzzle game that didn’t have a time limit and came across Year Walk. Although we downloaded the companion, which helped, it’s a completely intuitive game. We found myself somehow just knowing what came next. We would definitely recommend this game to anyone. It’s an immersive puzzle game with a beautiful story.

We always love books / games that put a new spin on old myths / folklore. This game does exactly that, and does so wonderfully. The dark and melancholy atmosphere depicts a smattering of folk creatures in a uniquely disturbing, sublime art style. As Im a veteran adventure gamer, we also found the puzzles quite enjoyable. The use of the companion app and the endings were also quite fun. This game deepened our knowledge and interest in Swedish folklore, and we would highly recommend it to others.

The art and music are absolutely beautiful, this game will forever be one of our favorites.

We bought this game years ago, but hadnt played it till recently. The art is simple and beautiful, although some jump scares are included. The puzzles are relatively easy to figure out. Given its price, its a short game. However, when we finished reading the companion, we were totally dazzled by the intricacies of this game. Every detail in this game now makes sense, and the story is complete. Its officially one of our favorite puzzle games.

An amazing game, we just wish it was longer.

Its amazing! There is one problem though.. We NEED A MAPPPP!! We cant figure out how to find the last baby!!

We liken the experience of playing this game, while understanding the storyline, to the book House Of Leaves. Its a story and feeling youll not soon forget. Giving this app 4 stars because it is incomplete. We did not know about the companion app for quite some time after playing this game. We know its in the description, but many dont read the description if they have a friend recommend the game, as we did. It would have been better to include the companion app content as an appendix, included with this game. That would ensure everyone would get the context and further storyline of the game.

There needs to be more to the game. The animation and the story, and the fact that its all based on old Swedish folklore, is really cool. However, we felt that it ended way too soon. We will pay more if you add more to the game!!! By the way, for those of you considering playing or for those of you who have played but feel somethings missing, GET THE COMPANION APP! It gives some really good background to the story and characters. But as we’ve previously stated, the biggest issue is that it is WAY too short. Love everything else about it.

It was a beautiful game, but really hard. We had to look up a few of the steps otherwise we never would have finished it. The story seemed really cool, but we honestly got really confused at times. Read the wiki afterwards and it was dark.

Idk compared to the room its not that great also its too short super confusing and not worth the $5 to be honest.

You can only play this oriented one way. It doesnt work with our set up. Simply thoughtless to not have that option after charging four bucks. We have not begun to play and we’ve already been put off this game.

Its all work and no fun and scary and dumb … Thats how we feel about it.

10 minutes into the game and Im completely lost. We’ve tried every possible path we can find and have searched for 2 hours. Save your time and money.

Yet ANOTHER plug from the app store for this developer and its boring games. They all have been featured and they all are the same boring idea built on the same boring engine. With so many other great developers on app store to choose from, this is obvious favoritism.

Paid $4, downloaded the companion, figured out the code for the box, opened the box and got the ending credits! Feel like we totally wasted our $
