Dive into 1849

"1849 … might just be the only real city-building game on iOS" – Owen Faraday, Pocket Tactics

The year is 1849, and gold has just been discovered in California. You decide to head out west, to seek fame and wealth in the approaching Gold Rush.

Will you strike it rich and become an overnight mining magnate? Or build your fortune bit by bit by supplying 49ers with pickaxes and blue jeans?

Gameplay:

1849 is a city management game set during the California Gold Rush. Your task is to build towns, populate them with workers, and keep your citizens housed, fed, and entertained. You’ll have to manage and coordinate extensive production and trade networks to make sure your towns thrive.

Updated with two new scenarios!
The Epilogue presents two final scenarios, taking place in the period after the gold rush, as the people of California attempted to forge a new identity in a state that went through an irreversible transformation.

Key Features of 1849:

  • A campaign mode that traces the development of the Gold Rush from mining camps to bustling cities. Each city scenario presents players with unique starting conditions, victory goals, and obstacle events.
  • Sandbox mode with a procedurally-generated map for your location, based on geography (from the Pacific coast to the Sierra Nevada mountains), precipitation, resource availability, and starting lot size.
  • Vivid Old West towns with geography and architecture directly inspired by California’s Gold Country.
  • Over 50 resources to dig up, farm, refine or manufacture as you build complex towns and cities.
  • Classic city management gameplay meets modern technology in a sim tailored specifically for tablet / touch screen play.
  • Developed by SomaSim, a new studio dedicated to producing deep simulation games for today’s players.

Great game. We wish they would come out with another expansion pack or update each city with another couple More starting scenarios, adding to the 3 per city they have now. We played this game. After a while deleted everything and played it again. We want more.

Wonderful game. Beautiful graphics. We have played through the California and Nevada scenarios. This has become a favorite especially since the sandbox mode has opened. The tasks are varied enough to really hold your interest as you build cities and ours your way across these to states. Replay value is truly a plus.

This game is amazing!! Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this game to the public! Not only fun but so educational about the history of California! We highly recommend this to everyone and any age over 8 up to 75. Thank you again!

We loved this game so much! Please put out another game like this soon.

We can choose Nevada city, read the introduction but pressing ok to start does nothing. It’s just frozen. Bummed! We were looking forward to more play!

The latest "Epilogue" expansion pack will not allow us to advance past the first city (Nevada City) on iPad. We have passed all goals, but it never recognizes that we have more than 300 residents. Love this game and want to do more … Please help!

Fundamentally, 1849 is a city builder with economic overtones. It compares favorably to PC classics like Pharaoh and the Caesar series, upon which it is heavily based. Artwork is variable — landscapes and people are somewhat cartoonish and lack detail, but buildings are highly detailed artworks. The game itself is, as a city builder, highly enjoyable. The only lacking part is in its economics model; it is impossible to sell everything you can produce, meaning that, eventually, you’re destined to become either a ghost town or one that’s well past its glory days. (Bit of a history lesson in there.) Overall, a good game… Probably not worth the $4 or $5 we paid, but well worth two to three… And well worth your time.

1849 is a fun sim building combined with time management game. Set in the Old West, building resources to feed and clothe your workers while striking for profit! A fair challenge in strategy.

Tablet version no micro transactions computer version great but almost same as tablet but for more money.

Has a few warts, but overall lots of fun.

Great app! One issue – the fish cannery appears to produce canned meat instead of canned fish. When playing, can’t sell/trade canned fish because it can’t be produced.

It’s a good game with a mid-1800’s Sim City feel to it. You start from scratch in Sandbox mode and are able to build a thriving economy in an hour or two. Our only complaint is that we wish there were more natural resources on the map.

Worth buying if you enjoyed SimCity. Fun, addicting but repetitive.

But what a pain. It’s not working properly, it drags, hesitates, and if you choose different levels you do not get what is described. Even registering is a big pain. It’s been 5 hours no activation code so you can’t ask for help. What a pain sorry we bought it.

Fantastic little game – enjoying it immensely and looking forward to playing the add-on.

Thank You for listening and adding the sandbox mode. This is a developer who reads their reviews. The game is a lot of fun with a nice campaign mode to play through, the only thing missing is a sandbox mode. Thanks for all the updates fixing the bugs.

Thank you for the sandbox mode. Looking forward to new and exciting updates.

Awesome game. Worth every cent!

We really enjoyed playing this game and we look forward to a sandbox mode!

In the vein of Ubisofts Anno series comes 1849. Each ‘level’ tasks you with a mission that once completed, you start fresh in a new town. While it is ‘simple’ compared to the Anno series, this is a great start towards getting these type of resource management city builders towards the ipad. This is the closest we have to one and it does scratch that itch. For the low price, we are not going to complain that there is no sandbox mode. We will gladly pay the DLC price should it come around. It is thematic, good animation, music and gameplay.

Very limited depth. Less of a city builder than a bad time management game (in at least the first few levels, if you don’t trade at the right time, you’ll lose all population in the blink of an eye). I’d love to say there is potential here, but there really isn’t any room that we could tell for the engine to grow. Cool period to make a game for, but that’s about it. $5 very badly spent.

We saw some good reviews online for this game before paying for it and it sure is worth it. Excellent interface, great challenges. As you go up in levels, you really need to use strategy to succeed. We have tried all kinds of city building games and this one is top notch. Hope there continue to be updates in building types, challenges, etc.

This is not a build a city game or find mind gold game played 30 do mission in one town open new town do mission and so on . Pay 5$ for this dum game.

Pros: Great resource / city mgmt game. Similar to the ceasar games from the 90’s. Very stable and no bugs Many, many challenging levels No ads Good interface. This is hard to do on ios for some devs.. Works fine offline Con: Only one: the country music got old quickly.. Just turned it off.

At first, we thought this game was going to be another FarmVille game or something but boy was we wrong.. This game reminds us so much of the Sim City game but with a western style to it. It includes a story mode which starts out easy and then starts getting challenging. Every once in awhile disasters happen like fires and earthquakes, which keep the game interesting even when money is short. You will run into challenges along the way that may benefit your gameplay if achieved within a certain number of days which is accepted or declined. If you beat the story mode, you have the option to play sandbox. Overall, great gameplay and graphics! Worth every penny!

Have only been playing this for a few hours but definitely impressed at the depth, the graphics and animation and how smoothly it all runs, and the challenge of story mode. It can be a little tricky setting up the proper production chains, imports, exports and balancing trade with your own citizens needs but we are enjoying the game and would highly recommend it to other.
