Day of the Tentacle Remastered – Family Game Review

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is a Family/Adventure game from Double Fine Productions, Inc., first launched in 11th July 2016.
It’s rated 12+ and currently has 261+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Day of the Tentacle Remastered Stand Out
Dr. Fred’s mutated purple tentacle is about to take over the world, and only you can stop him!
Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world!
Now, over twenty years later, Day of the Tentacle is back in a remastered edition that features all new hand-drawn, high resolution artwork, with remastered audio, music and sound effects (which the original 90s marketing blurb described as ‘zany!’).
Players are able to switch back and forth between classic and remastered modes, and mix and match audio, graphics and user interface to their heart’s desire. We’ve also included a concept art browser, and recorded a commentary track with the game’s original creators Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian.
Day of the Tentacle was Tim Schafer’s first game as co-project lead, and a much beloved cult classic! This special edition has been lovingly restored and remade with the care and attention that can only come from involving the game's original creators.
This Family game offers engaging gameplay and regular updates for mobile players.

Community Insight:
Rich Story, Mouse not officaly supported, but it works. Please add hot keys for keyboard players. It would really help. This 1993 DOS Classic is an all time hit, and with remastered music as well the original, that is GREAT!!!!!!!!! Thank you double fine, for bringing this award winning point and click adventure title to IpadOS, IOS , And MACOS.
Thank You for this game! Just started to play and we used to play in the 90s. Should have a feature where you can switch to the mouse pointer. BTW we see last update was 8 years ago but still works on the iPhone 16 pro.
Best game ever!!! And you also added maniac mansion!! Bless your heart!!! Love love love.
We played Day of the Tentacle back when it came in a box with five floppy discs to install it. To see it getting remastered we had to try it again. It is just as hilarious, challenging, and addictive the second, third, and fourth times. We even have our ten year old addicted to the game. One of the most memorable and fun games we have ever played and thats saying a lot.
We love this game. We played it a lot of years ago, but we played again recently and we enjoyed this so much.
Amazing game. Im not smart enough to beat these games without a walkthrough, but the story and humor is what keeps us playing this genre since being a kid. Seamlessly switch between retro game graphics or remastered which is neat. Also includes maniac mansion buried in the game.
Beautiful game, love the easy ability to switch between original and remastered even during active play. Happy to finally experience this on a convenient platform.
Wish Id saved this for a long flight! Perfect recapture – a blast from the past – no messing around with in-app purchase nonsense. Thanks for making come back to life remastered.
We played this game and loved it when we were a kid. We never imagined our kids would dig it as well, but now theyre doing speed runs since theyve beat it already.
Played this game as a kid in the 90s and loved it!! Excited to play again! Was nervous to read reviews saying no sound, and when we started it we had no sound either and was worried! All you have to do and turn your phone off of silent mode. Fixed the problem.
This bring back the old C promp days. Now they just need to add the original Sam and max – roger Wilco and the Indiana Jones search for Atlantis games . U cant go wrong with DOTT. Such a great game. Super funny . And difficult.
Used to play this game as a kid. We wish they made more games like that. Its genius and funny and it will always be number one for us.
We love it if you like hard puzzles get it.
Had this game as a little kid and its just like we remember. So glad we bought this.
Increblemente bueno! Lo jugu hace 20 aos y ahora lo juegan mis hijas.
We are so glad this was saved! LucasArt games were amazing and this is nostalgic to a T.
This game was incredible as a kid and this app is flawless! If you are like us, then you want the original sound and graphics. This app delivers with both the original graphics and the updated graphics as options. We loved it and continue to enjoy it. Buy it now! You wont regret it. :) Developers: Please consider a part 2! Get the old cast together and see what new adventures you guys can come up with.
Ill save you a lot of time reading reviews, download Day of the Tentacle. Masterfully done. Nuff said.
Day of the tentacle is both very funny and well thought out. The game essentially takes place in the same location throughout: a large house. But because the three friends are stuck in time (one in the past, one in the future), you can freely jump around between three iterations of the same house, each iteration vastly different. With the addition of a time machine for you inventory items, you can send (most) things back and forth through time to a different character in order to solve puzzles. This layout and this inventory time travel mechanic creates an incredibly dense, thoughtful game that challenges you without ever feeling overwhelming. Games with larger, nonlinear areas can often feel overwhelming because you dont know where youre supposed to go, or whether youve exhausted all of your exploration options. For example in Grim Fandango we were stuck for a long time simply because we didnt know there was a lighthouse we could go to, as the path to the lighthouse was not obvious. In DoTT, however, since the house structure is basically the same within each time period, youre given a set number of rooms to explore, with very concrete problems to solve, and its just up to you to solve them. You should never feel like there are rooms or areas you havent found. The puzzles are also very clever and goofy without being too illogical or ridiculous. There were occasional spots where we didnt know what to do next, but we were always able to overcome with just a bit of time to think. Youll often need to switch back and forth between your characters to think about your inventory and where those items could be useful. The game is funny, and the interactions of the items with other characters or things are often entertaining to observe as well as a way to gain useful knowledge about what an item might do for you in game. For example (light spoiler) you have a green textbook in your inventory at the start of the game. We let it sit there without doing anything with it for a long time, until we were slightly stuck later on, so we tried to give the book to someone for them to read. We thought, hey maybe theyll want to read this textbook. Our character then proceeded to read the book out loud to the other character, and the character told us to stop or hed fall asleep. This gave us an aha moment, as there happened to be another character in a different location that we needed to make fall asleep. Anyway Im rambling. The game is fantastic. Its dense, its smart, its hilarious. Remastered update looks amazing, and we just really cant complain about any of it.
We love that this is an app. We used to play this all the time as a kid and its just like the original. So glad this is out. Our only complaint is we wish you could see the list of achievements. It shows it at the top when you get it but it would be nice to see how many more we can get. Also you should make a DOTT #2.
…or you wont hear anything. We learned this the hard way – doh.
Remastered and with commentary! Just finish playing it through for our 2nd time but this time with editors commentary. Great work! Wish there were more games like this. Thanks for making this.
We love puzzle games and so does our dad. We play this game all the time and we love fingering out puzzles together.
Please make a monkey island remasterd All the lukas arts games are great.
Total nostalgia! We wish developers would still make games like these.
We love puzzle games. Riven, The Room Series, Tengami, etc. So of course we had to get this one. This game is perfectly executed as far as characters and controls, but it is also extremely difficult! You really need to think outside of the box to move forward. Our only constructive criticism is that for cutscenes, you can skip them just by holding your finger on the screen, which is just a bit too easy. And theres no way to replay it, so key information can be missed.
We dont hear any sound no music no volume we tried made it louder doesnt work.
Seeing this game come to life again was a dream come true. The attention to detail and ability to play the old format if desired make this a must have. We sure hope they release Sam n Max Hit The Road remastered someday soon.
Love this port to iOS of a classic. Our only ask is that this be updated to support the iPhone X screen size.
So fun to play even after 20 yrs from the original. Hours of hilarious dialogues and object puzzles.
We used to play this game when we were younger. More of the Lucas Arts games need to come back because we would play them all. Kings Quest next please.
Love this game and always have! We wish Lucas arts had more.
We remember having hardly any disk space, and memory to play this game. Now, we can put it on our phone? Time flies.
It's perfect, so many memory's.
Why cant we hear anything on our iPhone.
This game is exactly what we were looking for! We miss the old point & click adventures from when we were a kid, and this is wonderfully done! Some of the puzzles were difficult but the characters were hilarious and we like how long the game was. We dont like the press and hold to skip scenes. We missed some dialogue by accident because we would touch the screen thinking it was time for us to do something and we skipped stuff instead. And theres no way to go back and hear it again. So that was frustrating. Id rather have a confirmation do you want to skip this? All in all, one of the best games we have played in a long time and we hope to find more games like this one.
For everyone experiencing the problem of no sound – no idea why, on our iPhone 12 all Double Fine games dont play sound unless you connect to an external bluetooth device like AirPods. Technically connects to CarPlay too but the broadcast lag there is so bad it messes up voice lip sync for the characters.
Fun, but annoying to miss dialogue when we tap and dont realize a cut scene has started.
Original game is a classic but this version consumes an unreasonable amount of disk space at almost 3gb for a game that came out in 1993. For comparison, more recent mobile games like super MARIO run or Sam and max beyond space and time both come in at around 300 mb. What, exactly, is included in this massive package.
Played this game as a kid and loved it! Was really excited to play it again on our phone (iPhone XR), but there is no sound. Super bummed! Please fix so we can update our review.
A good game, but the last update was over 9 months ago. It would be an easy change to fit the X screen, its a shame there hasnt been anyone checking in on the app and making sure its up to date.
Well, we've been trying to install This app but it just won't seem to install on our iPhone and ipad. Not sure What's happening here, but we have great connectivity otherwise, just not for this app.
Stop thinking about it and buy this game! It is worth every penny. It is just like the classic, but with better graphics and gameplay.
Wow, can't believe that it is on IOS!!! The remastered game is very fine and but still supports the traditional interface brought back tons of good old days memories.
Reminds us of our childhood. We desperately wanted this game to be in touch and click mode for tablets. Here it is.
In the computer room in the second floor where the hamster is, you can walk to the computer and launch Maniac Mansion. The original exactly as it was about 20 years ago. The port is very well done too.
We loved this game back in the day and have been looking for it to be re-released for years. The game is just as we remember. We are looking forward to the Full Throttle release later this year. We are hoping it gets both an iOS and macOS release like this one did. If so we will be buying when en released.
The remastered version came out great, very good work! The game is easy to play and fluid, no glitches. Im very impressed with the end product. We can only hope this is not your last LA game. Please pretty please do "The Dig".
They don't make them like they used to, well they hardly make them at all any more. The good old days when point and click adventures were in fashion… It was all about story and using your brain while relieving the stress. No constant shooting or stressful gameplay, simply just sit back click your mouse and figure out puzzles. Maniac mansion was also a classic wish they would port that one to. But day of the tentacle is brilliant and it really brings back memories. This game does really well on iOS touch screen and we feel like iOS is a perfect platform for point and click adventures. And how great is it to have a game anywhere you go… Well almost, wish they would bring iCloud saves so it's synced between devices as most people probably would play on iPad at home and phone on commute. That said this game was great then and it's still great to this day. All we can say if you're a point and click fan there's really nothing to thing about paying $4.99 for plenty of fun. Ps. Please bring back more point and click adventure it is really the best games on an iOS device.
Please bring back maniac mansion ! We wouldn't care if it were 200 bucks we'd dl and play.
